“Damn Audrey!”
That was the only thing in my mind as I opened the paper that contained our contract agreement. She always chose the wrong time to tell the world that we were dating. I could feel my hands begin to vibrate and I sighed. Once again, I had forgotten to take my medication.I dropped the paper on the table before us and looked up to make sure that she was listening. Her deep blue eyes were still fixed on me and I smiled. She was very attentive. My father would love that.“Sleeping arrangements first,” I announced. “My sleep is very important to me.”She smiled and I continued immediately.“On regular nights, you would sleep in my room and I would sleep in the living room,” I said. “On not so regular nights, we could share the bed.”“Not so regular nights?” she asked, her eyebrows arched at me.“Would get to that later,” I frowned.I wondered if she was surprised, surprised that the son of one of the richest men in America couldn’t afford a house with two rooms. She didn’t seem to show any sign of surprise though. Her eyes remained fixed on me, waiting patiently for my next term.“For our feeding and upkeep,” I muttered. “I would take care of that for the period our contract lasts.”“Thank you,” she cut in. “I believe I can take care of myself.”“If you say so,” I grunted and read on. “My work schedule is pretty tight. As early as six in the morning, I would be out, and I’m usually back late at night. I’ll expect you to take care of the house in my absence and prepare something decent for supper upon my return.”“Take care of the house?” she frowned. “You mean clean up?”“You can add my laundry if you like,” I shrugged. “I never wear my clothes more than once so they won’t be hard to wash.”“I’m not signing up to be your slave, Lucas,” she said. “I also have a life to live.”“We would make it work somehow,” I replied with a dismissive wave of my hand. “You would be required to go on regular dates with me. We would hold hands, smile and take pictures, and occasionally, you would be coming with me to my office. I would make sure to inform you prior to the date, and you can do well to prepare yourself for my father’s high IQ questions. If you can get off on a good start with him and he really likes you, then we wouldn’t need to go through this torture for six whole months. Is that understood?”She nodded glumly and I continued reading my terms.“For our evening schedule, dinner would be by 9pm. Bedtime would be immediately after dinner. Sex is twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays…”“Excuse me did you just say sex?” she asked, her voice a little above a whisper.“Light sex on Thursdays,” I nodded. “Something more kinky on Saturdays. I make use of ropes, cuffs and horse whips. If you’re not cool with anyone I can cross it off the list and find a suitable replacement…”“This is a contract marriage for heavens sake!” she cried. “There is no sex.”“Lower your voice,” I muttered. “Sex is a very important part of every relationship so I’m afraid we can’t do without it…”She stood up immediately. “I’m afraid that’s the end of our discussion as well.”“Wait!” I grunted. “Once a week then.”She rolled her eyes and grabbed her purse from the table, prepared to leave and I knew immediately that she was not going to budge. I knew her type very well – the good girl that never gave her body to any man just like that. I also knew that she was perfect for the role I wanted her to act and as such, I was not willing to give up on her.“We’ll have it your way then,” I grunted.“We’re not having it at all!” she cut in.“I mean we’ll have it your way,” I said stressing the last words. “No sex.”“Good,” she muttered and sat down again.“Not like you wouldn’t beg me for it later on,” I laughed. “They always do.”“We would see about that,” she scoffed.“Oh I love challenges,” I smiled, my eyes lighting up with an evil glint. “That is all I want from you. Now, what do you want from me?”I watched as she produced a paper from her purse and instead of reading her terms out for me, she slid the paper across the table to me. I caught it and opened it to read.“Couples therapy session once a week.” I looked up at her and she nodded.“Reasonable donations and regular visits to Steve McLaren’s orphanage home.” I frowned at her and she shrugged.“West Coast book club meetings once a week,” I grunted. “Come on. There’s no fun activity here.”“Its not fun spending the next six months of my life with a stranger,” she replied. “I think we’re even on that.”“Fine,” I grunted, hurriedly folding the paper. “You have another copy of it right? I would be taking this one home. I’ll type everything and send you the document to sign via mail.”“Okay then,” she smiled. “Nice meeting you Mr. Storm.”“The pleasure is mine, Miss Hail,” I smiled back.“Its Hall,” she corrected. “Samantha Hall.”“I’d prefer hail,” I said. “Storm and Hail. They go together well don’t you think?”She was about to say something when I noticed two men on leather jackets moving towards me from the corner of my eyes. I turned around quickly and saw the pistol.“Samantha!”I tackled her to the floor as the sound of gunshots rent the air. She fell easily, her slender body compressed to the ground under my huge frame and I could see the fear in her eyes when she looked at me.“Lucas?”“Shhh!” I warned. “Close your eyes.”She whimpered and made to protest but I gently placed my finger over her eye. She obeyed and kept them shut and I stood up from the floor immediately. I had some unfinished business to attend to.I caught sight of the two men making their way across the outer lawn and I knew that I couldn’t let them escape. If they did, they would tell whoever sent them that they couldn’t complete the job and he would probably send more people after me. I needed to end it there and then.I ran outside the garden and found them immediately. They were already halfway through to the gate and even from the distance, I knew I could gun them down with my eyes closed.“Last chance!” I cried bringing out my gun. “Stop right there and I’ll spare you.”Sadly, they didn’t take me by my word. They kept running until they got to the gate and just as they were about to escape, I pulled the trigger. Two quick shots were more than enough to bring them to the floor and I walked over to where they lay groaning to assess them.“Who sent you?” I asked.“Please don’t kill me,” the first man cried immediately. “I needed the money. He gave us a lot.”“Who?” I asked again.“Andres Hernandez,” the first man whimpered. My hands balled into fists and I gritted my teeth in anger. I should have known that my bastard brother who wanted the company would want to have me dead. Suddenly, a new wave of anger washed over me.“I would not forgive you,” I said cocking my gun and pointing it at them. “But God would. Say your last prayers.”I watched as they whimpered and begged for mercy and without further ado, I pulled the trigger. They went silent immediately and I looked up to see that Samantha was watching from the gate, her mouth covered in shock.“Samantha!” I called.Lighting flashed at that exact moment, illuminating the dark garden for a second and I could make out her pretty face. She backed away slowly, her eyes fixed on me and in the process, her purse fell to the floor.“Oh come on,” I grunted, throwing my hands in the air. “They would have killed me.”She turned immediately and bolted away, abandoning her purse that had fallen on the floor. I stared at her as she ran. I could have caught her easily if I wanted to, but I didn’t. She didn’t deserve to spend the next six months of her life with a monster.I walked up to the gate, picked her purse and opened it. Her credit card, ID card and few important documents were inside and I knew that I had to find a way to return it back to her.“They came again eh?” a familiar voice said behind me.I spun around immediately and met his dark gaze. Rudolph Robbins or R.R as I liked to call him. We had been best friends since high school and he was the only person in the world I could trust. He knew about my situation with my father and my brother and was even there the first time Andres had tried to assassinate me. He had shielded me with his body, taking three bullets to the shoulder and we had barely managed to escape. Two weeks later, and a repeat occurrence. Only that this time, he was not there when it happened.I nodded and watched as the expression on his face changed. He removed the band from his hair and it fell across his back.“And you’re still not convinced that Andres is behind all this?” he asked, staring intently at me.“It is him,” I muttered pointing at the dead bodies of the two men. “Gathered that much from them before they died.”“Should have killed the psycho when I had the chance!” he grunted. “But no, he’s family and you can’t spill his blood. Well, wait till he spills yours.”He turned around and headed away and I stared into space. My mind was not on Andres, or on the fact that he had sent his thugs after me. My mind was on Samantha Hail, my contract wife that I had just lost.“Want to wait here till the police come around and start asking questions eh?” R.R frowned at me.I heaved a deep sigh and followed him as he made his way out of the garden. I was still deep in thoughts. Samantha Hail. There was something about her that I couldn’t lay my finger on, something that made her very much different from every other woman I had tried getting into a contract with, and for the first time in my life, I prayed. I prayed to God that things worked out between us.I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, not even daring to stop for as much as a second until I got to my house. I opened the door and slumped on the chair immediately. My heart was beating in my chest and I struggled to calm my breathing down. The image of the two men begging for their lives before he had silenced them were still very fresh in my memory and the very fact that he even had a gun on him all the while made me shudder. Who was Lucas Storm? Why did he keep a gun with him? Who were the men that had attempted to kill him? Why did they make such a daring attempt at a public place? Tons of questions flooded through my mind and I knew that no matter what, I wouldn’t be able to answer as much as a single one of them. I did a quick sign of the cross and thanked mother Mary for giving me the courage to run away from him. He was too dangerous for me. I heard the sound of a phone ring from a distance and I turned around quickly, searching for my own phone. It was not in the
"I don't want to see him again," I said to Valerie. "If I want to stay alive, I need to stay as far away from him as possible."Valerie looked at me with concern. "Do you think he's dangerous?""I don't know," I replied. "But I can't take that chance. The worst could happen if I meet up with him again."Valerie nodded, understanding the fear in my voice. "I agree, we need to be cautious. Maybe we should go to the police and report what happened."I shook my head. "No, I don't want to involve the police. I just want to forget this ever happened and move on with my life.""But what if he really is a bad guy?" Valerie asked."I know what I saw," I said firmly. "He might have claimed self-defense, but I don't believe it. I think he's a bad guy and I don't want to be associated with him in any way."Valerie placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry, we'll figure this out. I'm here for you, Samantha. We'll get through this together."I knew I could count on Valerie to support me
I didn't expect such rude behavior from my secretary and to my guest! The audacity!! I thought to myself."What's going on here?" I asked in a cold tone, addressing my secretary. He looked up and stammered, clearly caught off guard."I...I was just joking with her, boss," he said weakly, as if that could excuse his behavior.I could feel my blood boiling at his words. "Joking? Is that what you call it?" I said, my temper rising. "You spoke to my guest in such an unprofessional manner, and you think that's a joke? You should be ashamed of yourself."My secretary was taken aback by my outburst, but I wasn't finished yet. "I didn't hire you to harass my guests," I continued, my tone still cold. "I hired you to work for me in running this company, and if you can't do that without being disrespectful, then I suggest you find employment elsewhere."As I confronted my secretary on his unprofessional behavior towards Samantha, I couldn't believe my ears when she spoke up in her defense, "He
"What the hell are you doing here, Andres?" I demanded, my voice tinged with anger. After everything that had happened, Andres had the audacity to come in and stir up trouble, the nerves to show up in my presence.Andres smirked. "Last time I checked this establishment was owned by my father, I don't see anything wrong with being in my father's company," he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm, and worse, how he emphasized on "my father"... Son of a bitch!I gritted my teeth. "Cut the crap, Andres. You know damn well why I fired the secretary.""Enlighten me, then," Andres said, crossing his arms over his chest.I took a deep breath, trying to keep my anger in check. "The secretary embarrassed Samantha, insulted me, and then didn't even mean the apology he made to her. That's why I fired him."Andres raised an eyebrow. "Oh, I see. So you fired him because he embarrassed your little girlfriend and insulted your delicate ego? How very noble of you, Lucas."I felt my anger rising again.
I quickly sprang into action, holding Andres' hand midair and pulled Samantha away from harm's way. I could feel the anger and frustration boiling up inside of me, but I managed to keep a calm facade on the outside."Not. One. More. Move," I growled, my eyes locked on him.Andres tried to struggle against my grip, but I held firm. "Let go of me, Lucas. You don't know what you're doing.""Oh, I know exactly what I'm doing," I replied, my voice dripping with disdain."I'm stopping you from making a huge mistake, because I swear with everything I have if your finger touches her… then by God, I'll damn the consequences and kill you,"We stared at each other for what felt like an eternity, the tension in the room almost palpable. Finally, Andres relented, lowering his hand and stepping back."You're not worth it, Lucas," he spat. "None of this is worth it."He sneered at me, pulling his arm out of my grasp. "You always were the weak one, Lucas. You don't have what it takes to lead this com
"Holy cow!" Valerie's scream and jump took me aback. I didn't expect such a reaction from her. It was my first time seeing her, but I recognized her from the pictures Samantha had shown me. She was a beautiful young lady with long black hair, a slim body and an infectious smile.Valerie started talking so fast I could barely keep up with her. "Oh my goodness, Lucas! I can't believe it's you. Samantha told me so much about you, but she never mentioned your last name. I didn't realize it was Hernandez. Wow, what a small world!"I smiled at her and replied, "Yes, it is. It's nice to finally meet you…,""Valerie, the name's Valerie," she replied and stretched her hands for a handshake.I reached out and took her hands in mine, "Nice to meet you Valerie," I said."The pleasure is mine,"She continued, "I can't believe Samantha didn't tell me the truth. She said you were just a normal dude she went out on a date with, never knew it was Lucas Hernandez!"I looked at Samantha, who was standin
I was sitting in the living room, scrolling through my emails when Valerie walked in. She was wearing an apron and I could smell something delicious coming from the kitchen."Hey, what are you making?" I asked, looking up at her."Chicken alfredo," she replied with a smile. "I know it's your favorite."I grinned, feeling my mouth water at the thought of the creamy pasta dish. "Thanks, Val. You're the best."Valerie chuckled and walked over to the couch, sitting down next to me. "So, have you heard from Lucas yet?" she asked, her tone casual.I tensed up at the mention of his name, feeling a mix of anxiety and excitement. "No, not yet," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.Valerie raised an eyebrow, her eyes scanning my face. "It's been over a week since you signed the contract marriage with him. Don't you think he should have called by now?"I shrugged, trying to hide the disappointment in my expression. "I don't know. Maybe he's just busy."Valerie shook her head, her expression d
I hesitated for a moment when I saw Lucas's name on my phone screen. Part of me wanted to let it ring, to let the call go to voicemail and avoid whatever conversation was to come. But another part of me, the part that had been missing him since the last time we spoke, urged me to answer. Finally, I gave in and answered the call, trying to sound casual even though my heart was racing. "Hello, Lucas.". I watched with hidden amusement as Valerie quickly dropped the plate on the sink and rushed to the living room. She stood beside me curiousity sputtered on her face, she mimed "I'm sorry," and I rolled my eyes at her… Valerie was a handful."Samantha, how are you?" His voice came through the phone, smooth and unbothered… heck he was supposed to call me, I'm not his wife I know but he would present me to the public and most importantly his father, courtesy demand he called at least!"You're going overboard with this Samantha," I thought to myself."I'm good, thanks. How about you?"s"I'm d
Days had passed and everything seemed to return back to normal except for a few times– when I saw Audrey, either at the house during breakfast or at the office. Asides that, my relationship with Lucas was moving just fine.I got out of the bed and made to walk into the bathroom to prepare for work when I lost balance and fell back on the bed. My head felt fuzzy and my legs were wobbly. I held the back of my neck to keep it steady, but it was like a log of wood was stuck in my head."My goodness…" I muttered under my breath as I managed to stand up and started making my way to the bathroom, when I felt bile rise to my throat. I quickened my steps, turned on the faucet when I stepped foot into the bathroom and threw up all the content in my stomach. I felt fuzzy the more I threw up, I slid onto the floor and leaned my back against the wall. There was a knock on the door. "Come in…" my voice was faint, even through the sound of the water gushing out I knew he must've heard.Lucas came in
I had mixed feelings about Lucas' actions. Yes, Audrey was a bit too much, but she was carrying his baby or at least that was what she made us think. Perhaps, he should have been a little lenient with her and let her be till she puts to bed."Are you cussing at me because of Samantha?" Audrey's tone was that of bewilderment.A vein in Lucas' neck pulsed hard, "My wife. That's who she is and I wouldn't have you displace her," he tightened his grip in my hands, "Now get out," his voice was calm but had the sharp edge of a sword.Audrey looked at me intently and I could clearly see through the hatred that brewed from her. She stared for a while and left.Lucas turned to face me. "I shouldn't have picked up a fight with her in the office," I regretted my actions, but it was much needed. He placed a finger over my lips, "It's okay pumpkin, you don't have to defend anything," his voice reached to my heart and patched the broken pieces like the holes weren't there to begin with."I love you
My schedule stared at me and I could barely make out the words. I had a meeting slated for four p.m and I was already bored. I was tired sick of everything happening, Samantha was doing a good job trying to keep it together but, for how long would she keep up with the act.A knock sounded on my door, the door creaked open and my secretary walked in. "Sir the meeting–"I rubbed my forehead in frustration, "I know what time the meeting is slated for,"She nodded and walked towards my desk to pick my laptop. "It's in five minutes right?" I questioned."Yes Sir, and some of the board members are already on their way," she said.I waved my hands in dismissal. I was suffocating and nobody was seeing it, or maybe they were and they can't do anything to salvage the situation. Audrey coming to the office was something I'd never have imagined to happen and it did. What was my father thinking, agreeing to it in the first place? He hated her the moment he set eyes on her, ''She's not good enough
Soon after Lucas left for his office, Laura walked in looking a bit disgruntled and without my regular morning coffee."Laura, I thought you left to get my coffee?" I questioned, when in fact she left to give Lucas and I privacy. She inched closer to my desk, "The new staff took the cup of coffee from me," her voice was low, I had to strain my ears to make out what she was saying.I clenched my fist into a ball, taking a deep seated breath to quench the anger that was threatening to erupt. "And who's the new lady?"You know who.Laura tugged at the edge of her shirt, "Audrey–"Take a deep breath Samantha. I took a deep breath, paused for a few seconds and forced a smile across my face. "Thank you Laura, you may leave now," I tried so hard to conceal the disdain in my voice."I'm sorry ma'am. I should have been more careful. But, she just snatched it from–"I raised a finger to stop her from saying more. I should have scolded her, but this had absolutely nothing to do with the young la
All through the drive, all I could think of was; What would the other staff say when they see Audrey and with a growing bump? Besides Lucas' secretary whom I was sure would keep the situation under lock, I wonder who else got wind of the news.I tried to focus on other things. Other things like exposing Audrey for whom she really was. I don't know if it was what comes with old age or his way of punishing Lucas for slipping up but Javier wasn't seeing Audrey for the sly she was and it bothered me."Samantha…"What does she want now?No response. I wasn't in the mood to talk to her and I was only doing what Javier asked, "I just want to get acquainted to the Java's working system," she rubbed her bulging stomach gently, "It would be nice if I get some experience to at least share with him when he comes of age and is ready to follow in the family's footsteps," she laughed.Lucas, where are you?I bit so hard at my lower lips until I felt the coppery taste of blood in my mouth. Don't cry.
After my visit to Valerie's place, I became more sensitive to Audrey's movements. Where she went to, what she did when we were out. So far, nothing out of the ordinary has happened."Lucas, wait up for me!" Valerie cried from the stairs. We were already running late and one of Audrey's dramas was something we didn't want so early in the morning.Lucas sighed sharply, "What the hell do you want this time?" He gritted.I hope it wasn't what I was thinking. She was dressed in a black velvet gown that stopped just on her ankles, court shoes and a blazer over the gown. It wasn't exactly my style but she looked good."I am coming to the office today," Audrey said.I was a bit taken aback, "Why?" We asked almost at the same time. She rolled her eyes in disgust, "Isn't it obvious?" She sighed, "I want to start working at the company," she looked at me with disdain, "Afterall she works there too,"There was no way in hell. The vein at the back of my neck pulsed hard, and I felt my heart bruise
Going to the office and coming back to the mansion to see Audrey with her fast growing bump wasn't something I looked forward to. I tried to square my shoulders and act like nothing's wrong when on the contrary, I was dying slowly.Audrey altered everything. The peace in the house, the scent and everything to suit her smell on the basis of being hyper sensitive to smell. Lucas ignored her and acted like she was some sorta ghost. But, I knew he looked forward to having his own child. It wasn't the birth of the child that irked me, it was the vessel bearing that child that made this unacceptable."Good morning Ma'am," Laura greeted when I got to work one morning.I nodded in response and made my way to the office. She followed in silence till we reached the door."Do I have any schedule that'll take me out of the office?" I asked when I slouched into the chair. She looked through her memo."Yes ma'am. A meeting with the investors slated to take place by three p.m and–"I waved my hands
I waited till the two lovebirds drove off to work before I started getting ready to go out. It was already past nine a.m exactly and I was a few minutes behind time. The prison visiting hours would be due in forty-five minutes.I'd been in touch with Andres since he was convicted of the crime. They'd all forgotten about him, I couldn't not after all we shared together. He wasn't the nicest person but he ignited the fire in me."Where are you off to?" Javier's voice sounded from the stairs when I opened the door. Lousy old man. I rolled my eyes and put on a calm expression before turning to face him.I flashed him a grin, "I'm going for antenatal," I lied. I could only hope he didn't request I go with the chauffeur because then I would be busted. He nodded, "Have a nice day," his voice was cold. I knew he didn't like me, he never did. Not when I was with Lucas, not when I was with Andres. I wondered why he didn't object to I and Andres' relationship when he got wind of it. Maybe he kne
She looked at the door, maybe hoping for a sign of Lucas then back at me. "Look I didn't ask your husband to get pregnant–"I sensed her anxiety from a mile away. Now was the time to act, "On the contrary, I don't care for you," My gaze lingered on her and fell on her growing stomach. "You would stay here till you give birth,"Audrey leaned into the bed, "I don't intend on moving out after childbirth if that's where you're driving at," her voice was a little shaky but she did a good job hiding it."We'll see about that. After childbirth, you'd go for a DNA test to ascertain who the father of the child is,"Now she got started, her face squeezed into a frown. "What the hell are you saying?"I rolled my eyes. Audrey. Audrey. Audrey. Still as vain as ever, "Exactly what you heard. If you claim Lucas is the father of your child," I paused when the housekeeper walked into the room from the closet and waited till she left, "Then we need to confirm, afterall…" my voice trailed off when she s
