Chapter 59

The first snow, as Nancy learnt, was long overdue, but the preparations for the coming cold had begun way before Derek and his men left. When the snow finally came, it brought with it a storm that lasted for four days straight. Nancy was thrilled by the way the land was blanketed in dismal white flakes of ice and the frozen lakes, even the water collected in the large drums behind the kitchen were all frozen. But the cold that came with snow was nothing like she had experienced before, but she had to get used to it and also get used to going about in the large animal fur coats that Livi was now tasked with making for everyone.

There were still things that needed to be done around the house to prevent possible starvation and preserve whatever food was left to last until the storm subsided. Since a good number of the men had gone off with Derek, there was too much work to do but limited hands, Nancy offered to help the men work. Rosey and Mitchelle protested, but she wouldn't

Chapter 60Daniel would not have taken that remark lightly from anyone else, and certainly not the disregard in Phillip's tone. But unlike his brother, he was not so fond of trouble. He knew old Norman, who served his father, and now his son, was serving Derek. But if any of the rumors he heard were true about these two, and it appeared like that, seeing that the boy did not even add a title to her name, then there was certainly bound to be trouble.Daniel grunted, repressing his humor. "I believe you are not going to let me freeze out here, do you by chance have room for visitors?""Indeed," Nancy mumbled, making her way back to the open door. "Of course there's room. Come.""Finally." Daniel muttered as he went in with her."So why?" Nancy asked, immediately they were in the parlor."Why what?" He asked gruffly. "Oh, the gift and the men. I'm only looking after my brother's property in his absence.""By God!" Nancy cackled. "Since when did the men in your sick family become so thoug

  • When Dreams Are Made   You Deserve Everything Good

Chapter 61Nancy was in the stable tending the horses, it was where she spent most of the snowy days now since it was the warmest and most important place in the house for her. Each day, after assisting Rosey with the chores and keeping Mitchelle company while Rosey napped, she would hurry down to the stable to care for the horses and chat lazily with Phil, who was now accustomed to her presence. Beside her, Victory lay close to her feet, chewing noisily on a straw that Nancy threw in her direction occasionally. Phil was out to fetch the woods he had m started cutting up to fix a spot on the stable fence where the storm had left in ruins. That afternoon, Naya came around the stable in the guise of bringing Phil's lunch. She drove Nancy mad with her insistent chattering about things that she could barely keep her mind on. Nancy only waited patiently for Phil to return so she could head back to the main house, but unfortunately, that did not happen until almost later in the evening when

Chapter 62The man was panting by the time he caught up with the heavily armed and unsmiling group of men who stood by the foot of the hill, apparently waiting for him. One of them regarded him with intent eyes that he struggled to ascertain. but all he could see in those eyes were anger and a distant sadness. He needed no telling that this was the leader of the small group of soldiers before him, but he had to admit that this one was a handsome devil, even more handsome than the blonde one who had captured him the night before. “What do I do with you now, fellow?” The unsmiling leader asked in a slow drawl. The man stuttered, “I promise I am not your enemy, killing me will not help you in anyway, sir.” “You may be right, but you were caught in the enemy’s territory. And you were trespassing the night before. Convince me that you are not a spy and I will spare your life.” The man gulped, this man in front of him was not joking and he certainly was not mincing words when he said he

Chapter 63 Scarlett’s patience was running thin by the minute as she waited by the hallway. The house was quiet, nearly everyone was sound asleep, but she had to wait down here for her only ally if she was going to succeed with her plans without running into one of those lousy maids.“Lady Scarlet.” She smiled, “Finally. You do know it is not good to keep a lady waiting, don’t you?” He bent his head and nodded his answer, “I’m sorry, I had to make sure nobody saw me since you said you wanted to be discreet.” “And you were right to do that, all is forgiven.” Scarlett said easily as she led him out the front door, “We need to talk.” “We can do that here.” “No we can’t, it is a sensitive topic. What did you say your name was again?” “Philip. Phillip Norman, My Lady.” “Scarlett, if you may, Philly boy. Come with me.” Phillip followed the lady out of the main house, how she had managed to remain there without Nancy throwing her out was still a mystery to him. The maid who delivers

Chapter 64 “I swear I heard the front door open.” “That is absurd, I didn’t hear it. And I know you didn’t, Rosey. Your hormones are beginning to take over your every sense.” “Then don’t you think that means I can hear things you don’t?” Rosey asked in a sudden twirl of interest.“No. I think it means you will believe you hear things or smell things when actually you don’t. Or when you are not supposed to.” Mitchelle said and waved her hand towards Rosey in dismissal. “I will go with the other option; when I’m not supposed to, thank you. Because I trust my senses, I did hear the front door open. Are you sure no one returned late last night?” “Nobody did.” Mitchelle answered tiredly. They were in the kitchen that morning, Rosey was separating the shaft from some wild fronts she had had a servant pick for her that morning, courtesy of her cravings. Mitchelle was preparing breakfast, and occasionally staring a large portion of broth on the dying fire by the hearth. Nancy sat at the

Chapter 65 Phil was grooming the black horse Daniel had gifted her outside the stable by the time she got there. The snow was not as heavy as it was the night before, so Nancy dropped Victory inside the stable and threw her a few straws to work on. She walked back to Phil and rubbed the horse’s mane dottingly.“I didn’t imagine it would need grooming so soon.” “They grow fast, Victory for example.” Phil replied, he did not look up from what he was doing, “I didn’t think you would come out today.” “Why not? What else would I be doing?” He shrugged, “Maybe resting. I think you are overworking yourself since Derek left. You help in the kitchen and here.” “I am not fragile, Phil. So you have no need to fear, I won’t break in two. And please let me have all the fun doing what I enjoy, now that Derek is away.”He nodded without looking up, “I see. Are you going to be there for that?” Nancy frowned, “For what?” “Never mind, Nancy. I have no business asking you that.” She studied him

Chapter 66Nancy was so shaken by what just transpired that she ran straight to the room and shut it tightly. What was happening? She had never imagined that she would be hearing this from any other person in a long time, and certainly not Phil. Was fate playing tricks on her? She felt so shaken, for some reason, the thought of someone you regarded as a friend suddenly telling you they have feelings for you and want to be more was suddenly like ugly music for a painful headache. It was scary.Indeed, she had contemplated the idea of escaping while Derek was away, it was not alien to her. But certainly not with any other person, and definitely not a lover. Not when she had not even made up her mind about leaving herself. Where could they go? Phil was just a stable boy, with no other source of income. Derek might be heartless most times, but was that worth leaving all this for? There was still too much she didn’t know yet, about this whole mix up of her identity. It was one of the reaso

So he just stood there, waiting to be invited in. Nancy was in the parlor, he could see her from where he stood in the doorway, she looked moody but that was no surprise to him, she was always occupied with her thoughts or in some sort of mood each time they met."Sir Daniel," the maid said in a way of greeting."Just Daniel please, I suppose this is the part where you invite me in? If you are observant you will see that it's pretty cold out here with all the snow and…"Realizing her mistake, Mitchelle shifted from the doorway "Oh! I'm so sorry sir. Do come in, pardon my manners." Nancy was sitting by the fire in the large parlor, her back to the door. But he could see the solemn look on her face, her expression was distant and she hardly noticed his presence. She was aware that someone had entered the

I bet that was why she woke up." Derek chuckled sweetly and drew her closer to himself, "Her mother loves the trouble." "She doesn't have much of a choice, does she?" Nancy grinned. "I'm afraid not." Derek said and kissed her tenderly, Nancy kissed him back with everything in her. When his hands began to roam down her breast and his kiss deepened, she didn't know when a loud moan escaped her mouth."Shh… you know we should be quiet if we are going to do this." Derek whispered softly.Nancy stopped and said with a frown, "We can always let Lydia keep Daisy or let her stay the night with Mitchelle in her room. Chapter 101The woman was too old to run and she knew that she had been made, but she wasn't going to give up easily, no, she wouldn't let them catch her. She ran towards the only exit she had had her man make for her, but now that he was dead and she was running through this big house with an infant who won't stop crying, it was more difficult than she thought. She ran back the way she had come, and that was when she saw the guards, by now words had gotten out that the new baby was missing, and the entire house was in jeopardy. Guards were running helter skelter to secure the place, and the hope of her getting out of her was too thin. Hell, she had done this easier twenty four years ago, it had been easier! Old age sure came with it's own disadvantages, and regrets. She had a lot of them, why had she let the opportunity to keep that whiny little girl out of her sight and her hand? She had never thought her dreams would take her this far, back to her roots! Back to the very place sh

Derek was beginning to fear for her, but he knew better than to try to stop her from joining them on the search. When they found Scarlett, there was no question as to whether she had a hand in what was happening, the woman was beyond shaken and too scared to even get out any sensible word."What have you done with my child!" Nancy yelled in despair as she grabbed Some by her dress."Nothing! I didn't do anything!"Derek was beyond angry, in his present mood, he knew that he would kill her if he got his hand on her, which was why he maintained his distance and waited for her to say something sensible. "Where is my child, Scarlett?" He asked coldly. "I don't have her!" Scarlett began, hoping that her pity game would work, "Derek, why would you believe I would want anything evil to happen to you?" • When Dreams Are Made   Sinister Plans

Chapter 99When Scarlett saw Phil being dragged into the house by Derek's men a few minutes after she saw the other man in bounds too, she became alarmed. But that was not the end of her troubles, following closely behind them was a woman who looked too much like Nancy, if she had not seen Nancy leave the room with Derek a few minutes ago, and of she didn't know that the woman had put to bed just yesterday, she would have thought that this woman was really Nancy because the resemblance was uncanny.Scarlett was too scared for herself because Phil did not look like he could withstand pressure. The foolish man had taken too long to finish the task she had sent him to complete, and had nearly lost his own head in the course of it. And now he was being taken by the very same people he was supposed to be running from, Scarlett knew Derek too well, he would not hesitate to kill Phil, or even her if she found out that she had masterminded this whole thing. As she waited behind the shadows f

Chapter 98Nancy stood rooted to the spot, her mouth agape and her eyes widened, she was too shocked to speak, and too stunned to even move. But it appeared she was not the only one who was momentarily paralyzed by the shock in the room, Derek was equally transfixed to the spot, he could definitely not believe his eyes. Lydia on the other hand had to see and feel things for herself, she had heard the stories and witnessed a few horrors herself, but when she set out on this journey to return to her parents and to see the imposter pretending to be her, it had been because she probably just wanted to help her parents even though they did not deserve it. And she had come with the mind to let them know her disappointment in them for their inability to tell her apart from someone else. But now, seeing this person for herself, it was like looking at her own reflection through the mirror. She reached out and touched the person in front of her, she herself appeared shocked and stepped back in

  • When Dreams Are Made   Proof?

Chapter 97Derek received Harvey's news with mixed feelings of happiness for his friend and misery at his own misfortune. Harvey had returned to his own house where his new family awaited him after congratulating Derek on the arrival of his daughter and soliciting for Rosey's freedom, which Derek had no trouble giving. His father had come the previous evening too, to see his new granddaughter after his mother sent him the news. Barry Gates, his supposed in-law was present and they were all celebrating the arrival of the child down with the rest of the house. But Derek was far from happy, his last conversation with Nancy left him with a mixed feeling of guilt and emptiness, an emptiness that felt all too familiar yet repelling. He didn't want to spend the rest of his days like that, no. This was the second time he admitted to himself that he loved a woman, and yet again, he could not have her, because of that little bridge between them. He had lost her before, and now that it seemed li

  • When Dreams Are Made   All Over Again

Chapter 96Nancy was led into the room, the same room she once shared with Derek. She recalled what Mitch and Rosey had told her, how he had ordered everything that would remind him of her to be burnt and yet here she was again. She was angry at herself for having let him bring her here, but then at the time, the thought had given her so much joy. When she entered the room, the first thing that caught her eye was the large portrait on the wall, Lydia's portrait. She was first filled with mixed feelings, but then her anger grew. How dare he leave the portrait there? Was it to mock her? Or to make her think there was still a place for her here? She shook her head and slowly walked to the bed but she stopped short at the sight that met her eyes. Derek was sitting on a chair beside the bed, holding the baby and playing with her little fingers. He looked up and was surprised to see her walk in, but Nancy did not notice. She saw only the way he held her baby lovingly and how happy he was. H

  • When Dreams Are Made   So Much To Live For

Chapter 95For the first hours after the baby's birth, every time she opened her eyes, she was filled with fear, and she could not dispel her feelings of apprehension until she assured herself her baby was all right. Lauren had told her that her child was safe and being fed at the moment, because according to her, the baby was too weak to wait for her own milk. Nancy asked if Derek had been allowed near her child, and she was told of how he had been of great help during the birthing, but she could not bring herself to believe it. She recovered slowly from the birthing, and all the pains were forgotten the moment Lucille brought her baby, wrapped in warm sheets and now dressed in sweet little clothes for her to hold for the first time. It was a grievous disappointment to Nancy that most of the child's features had been gotten from Derek, and very little from her, but Lauren told her that all that might go away as the baby grew. She wanted so much to give her baby the nourishment she

Chapter 94Roberts had exhausted every ounce of his strength on this wild goose chase, but the man he was going after was having a field day running through the steep path. He considered swinging his knife into the horse's back like he had seen Derek do several times in the field, but he decided against it, the animal did not deserve such barbaric treatment, and he was certainly not a heartless man. Luck smiled on him when he saw the black horse on which his target was riding stop and let out a sudden deafening neigh, the animal went ballistic, raising to legs in the air and then he launched forward and flung the man on his back off. The hooded man came flying off the horse with a thud that surprised even Roberts. His first impulse was to circle the man, who was now totally at his mercy with his own horse, then he drew his sword and slashed, first at the area above the man's knees and then his hand, this was to stop him from drawing his own sword or making any attempt to run.
