It was always frustrating how time seemed to crawl whenever a person needed it to move faster, Mia thought. The last thirty minutes of her shift dragged and felt like it would never end, but eventually, with relief in her voice, Mia announced it was time to close and everyone had to leave. The usual murmurs of complaints met her announcement, but she paid them no attention. She was already stretching the reserves on her tank of patience.
The two guys, Rick and Ben, together with Joy, all of whom also worked in the bar, made quick work of getting rid of the handful of patrons who didn’t seem eager to get home. If given the chance, Mia was certain they would sleep in the bar and wake up tomorrow morning, ordering their favorite liquor as breakfast.
She shook her head as Jim grumbled about being denied one more drink for the road even as he staggered to the door. If the man was trying to kill himself with alcohol, he was doing a mighty good job at it, Mia thought.
With Jim out the door, finally. One last person was left, and he didn’t look particularly in a hurry to get out. Mia dropped the rag on the counter and folded her arms over her chest. “Are you waiting for a red carpet to be rolled out for you or something? We are now closed, buddy.” She jerked her head to the door. “Find your way home.”
Asher blinked. He was equal parts shocked and intrigued. The woman was as sexy as she was feisty. He was sure she had folded her arms to look more serious and probably a little intimidating, but all Asher could concentrate on was the way her breasts pushed together under her black tight t-shirt.
He forced his mind out of the gutter that it had tumbled into the instant he had laid eyes on her. Catching and holding her gaze, he said what he should have said half an hour ago. “I want to apologize.”
Her eyebrows rose and arched. “And what are you apologizing for?”
“I know what the old man said was very inappropriate and it upset you.”
An incredulous look formed in her eyes. “You are apologizing for Jim?”
Asher paused for a moment. Maybe he hadn’t thought it through very well. “No… well, I mean yes. I did not stop him.”
“What would you have done? Slap your hand over his mouth to stop the words from falling out?”
“It would have been better than to listen to any more of his words,” he answered with a smile.
She did not return the smile. Her demeanor was still cold and unyielding. “Listen, Mister…”
“Asher,” he immediately interrupted. “Asher Deavan.”
A pause filled the air for a moment. Then she glared. “I don’t care what your name is. You are not from this town and chances are I will never see you again after tonight. As for your apology… it’s not necessary… that was hardly the most inappropriate thing I have ever heard since I started working here.” She jerked her head towards the door again. “Now, get out.”
Well, damn, Asher thought. Talk about a woman with a chip on her shoulder. He reluctantly stood up, reached into his pocket for some bills to pay for the coke and a tip, even if the woman didn’t deserve one. Then he left, without so much as a glance over his shoulder.
The cold, clean air outside the bar was a welcome relief to Asher when he stepped out the door. He walked towards the small car park about five meters from the bar where he had parked his Ducati 1098. The red and white paintwork of his bike shined brightly in the moon’s light; which was the only source of lighting around the bar. Apparently, the bar owner was just too cheap to think of things like light security lights.
Out of nowhere, an uneasy feeling settled in his stomach. His thoughts went back to the sexy bartender with a chip on her shoulder. It was past one in the morning and he assumed she would be walking into the darkness of the night to go home. There was no car in the almost deserted car park that looked like the bartender’s ride.
Even though he knew she had been doing it for months, he was suddenly very uneasy about her doing it again. It was a strange protective feeling he had never felt before in his life, not even for the woman he had almost married a few months ago. He had just met Mia half an hour ago. She didn’t even like him. But he couldn’t shake the feeling.
Instead of getting on his bike and riding out into the night until he found somewhere safe to spend the night, he sat on the bike and waited. She was probably not going to appreciate it. In fact, he was certain she wouldn’t appreciate it, but he couldn’t leave.
“Hey, Mia. You got a new admirer?” Rick asked as he wiped down the last table.
They were almost done for the night. Cleaning up after the bar was closed didn’t take more than twenty minutes. Or rather, they didn’t allow it to take longer than twenty minutes. Whatever wasn’t done in that space of time was, without hesitation, postponed to the next day.
Mia looked over and saw that Rick was actually waiting for an answer. “Admirers in this place are a dime a dozen.”
“Nah, that one looked like he really wanted to give you the moon and stars in a bouquet the morning after.” He waggled his eyebrows to emphasize his point and smiled.
Mia chuckled. “I see the local drunks have inspired you with poetry.”
Rick shrugged and went to retrieve his jacket. “In this place… you take what you can.”
That was the truth. There wasn’t much anyone could learn or take from this place. Even when Mia had landed here six months ago and found the bar tending job, she knew she couldn’t have found a worse dump to hide in. That was the only advantage of a place like this; there was little-to-no chance anyone from her past could just happen to be passing through, which made hiding here the best decision she could have ever made.
Everyone left the bar, shouting the ‘goodnights’ and ‘good mornings’ as was the ritual. Then Mia was alone. She was always the last person to close up and leave. It never bothered her much. It’s not like she had anything to fear.
Ten more minutes securing that night’s money and she was out using the back door that gave into the alley at the back of the bar. If people thought the front of the bar was creepy, then they hadn’t seen the back yet. The alley was nothing more than a narrow passage between two buildings. It was so narrow and cluttered with empty boxes and crates that it made it almost impossible to get through without stumbling. And to make matters worse, it was dark. There were no security lights, not even the natural light of the moon could make it through because of the way the buildings had been placed.
All that, of course, did not worry Mia. As soon as she was out the back door, her eyes adjusted to her wolf and she could see as clear as day. That was why she saw them before they even made a move.
She had just locked the door and turned when she saw the two guys. She immediately recognized them as part of the group that had been playing music in the bar that night. Apparently, the fun hadn’t ended yet .
They stood leaning against the wall right at the edge of the alley where she was supposed to make her exit. She knew they couldn’t see her as well as she could see them. But there was no doubt they were waiting for her. And there was no doubt what their intentions were. Even with the foul odor of dead rats and rotten leftovers that saturated the air, the smell of arousal and anxiety from the two young men was very easy to catch.
“Shit,” she murmured to herself. She had really been looking forward to just getting back to her apartment and collapsing in her tiny bed for the next eight hours.
She couldn’t go the other way; it was a dead end. There was only one way in or out of the alley. And it was through the two guys.
Mia rolled her neck and started walking towards the guys. She had not expected beating anyone up tonight, but there was no avoiding it. She saw the moment they realized she was walking towards them. Their scent changed to one of excitement, then one of the guys pushed away from the wall and unfolded a pocket knife. Her step didn’t even falter.
Then, out of nowhere, a third person appeared at the entrance of the alley and immediately threw a punch at the guy that had still been leaning against the wall.
Mia was as shocked as the two guys that had been waiting for her. “What the hell?”
The guy with the knife turned and equally received a punch to his jaw. He staggered back and hit the wall. For the next few seconds, there was complete chaos. The two guys fought the third man in the dark. Grunts and the sound of flesh being struck filled the air.
Mia stood very still. She recognized the third man as Asher, but what was he still doing there and what the hell was he doing punching the two assholes that had been waiting for her?
Just then, Asher received a hard punch to his gut, and he doubled over. That was enough to get Mia out of her frozen state. She immediately moved forward. The three had managed to take the fight just outside the alley, so she stepped out of the alley straight for them. She pushed Asher away from the two. “Stay out of this,” she told him in a tight voice.
Pain pulsed through his gut, causing white sparks in his eyes, but he still had enough sense to be shocked by Mia’s reaction. He was barely managing to beat up both men, and she said he should stay out of it? Was that a joke?
But before he could respond, she was punching and kicking both men who had been waiting for her. Thankfully, the moon was full and bright, or he would have never believed what his eyes saw. Mia launched towards one guy and was giving him such a brutal beating. Asher cringed on behalf of the guy.
Then something caught the light of the moon and reflected it into his eyes for a split-second before it moved. Asher jerked and searched for the source; a sense of dread already filling him. Then he saw it. The other guy, who had been on the ground after one good hit from Mia, was back on his feet and had a knife.
Asher’s insides fell to his feet a second before his heart went into overdrive. His feet moved before his brain had even had time to process the situation fully. He threw himself at the man before he could reach Mia. They both hit the ground hard.
The air was knocked out of Asher’s lungs even as he rolled with the man on the filthy ground. In the struggle, he managed to hit the man with his elbow and the man fell away from him. As Asher tried to get up and follow, he saw Mia reach for the man and give him one punch that knocked the guy out cold instantly.
Damn.
“What part of stay out of it didn’t you understand?” she snapped.
Asher looked at the two unconscious young men on the ground, then at the woman who was glaring at him with eyes that almost looked like they glowed. Asher shook his head and blinked a few times. He must have hit his head, he thought.
“He had a knife,” he answered finally as he moved to get off the ground.
“I could have handled it.”
Asher’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t know how you were raised… but I can not stand by and watch a woman get attacked by two men and do nothing.”
She looked like she had something to say but suddenly raised her chin and Asher could have sworn he saw her sniff the air. “You are injured.” It wasn’t a question.
“What?”
Mia stepped closer. She ran her eyes over his entire body, then settled her eyes on his left arm. “You are injured,” she repeated.
The adrenaline leaving his body made it hard for him to comprehend what she was saying. Almost in a dazed state, he followed her gaze to his arm. Strangely enough, that was when he felt the pain. He was indeed injured. The sleeve of his leather jacket was torn and soaked from what he could see with the help of moonlight. A small part of him wondered how she had known and noticed before he did. “Oh.” He used his right hand to check the extent of the damage. “It doesn’t look that bad. I’m sure it’s just a scratch.” It also didn’t hurt like an injury hell bent on killing him, so he was certain he would be okay. Mia knew it wasn’t that bad, it was indeed just a scratch, but she couldn’t just leave him there after the idiot had tried to help her, even though it hadn’t been necessary. That brought another question to mind. “What were you still doing here, anyway?”
Mia stormed right into her tiny bathroom. She slammed the door and leaned against it. A cocktail of emotions hit her like a blow to her gut. On one hand, she was glad Asher was out of her apartment and she never had to lay her eyes on him again. But on the other hand, she wanted him back in her tiny apartment, passing judgement over her living conditions as though he had a right. The man had the nerve, and she was losing her mind to even find it remotely sexy. With angry jerky movements, she removed her clothes and stepped into her shower. She let the hot water beat against her skin till it turned red and steamed. It felt good. Her apartment left much to be desired, but at least the place had hot water. It felt like she was cleansing her body of the events of the last two hours. But more importantly, it felt like she was washing away her own reaction to Asher Deavan. After a moment, against her better judgment, Mia allowed her mind to wan
She shouldn’t have been shocked to find him waiting outside near the back alley, but she was. Her wolf's senses picked him up the moment she walked out the back door. After the events of the night before, she was more alert to her surroundings. The stench of the alley couldn’t completely hide the musky scent of the man, and she was sure she could hear a heart beating not too far away. Mia stalled for time by slowly locking the bar’s back door and double checking it. Then she had no choice but to walk out of the dark alley. And of course, her senses had not lied. Asher was right there, leaning against his red and white Ducati bike barely an arm’s length away from the alley’s opening. She stopped walking and glared at him. “You have trouble hearing or you’re just trying to piss me off?” she asked in a clipped tone. The smile on Asher’s face didn’t falter. “I was thinking more along the lines of charming you, by showing you how per
“There he is!” A deep voice bellowed from the doorway, the sound cutting across the quiet office space like a roar. “I was beginning to think we should send out a search party for you, man. Where the hell have you been? Did you get lost on the road or something?” Asher smiled and looked up from the pile of documents on his desk. “I was wondering how long it would take you to find me once you heard I was back.” He made a show to glance at his wristwatch with an intense look. “Exactly six hours and twenty-nine minutes. Not bad.” “Don’t forget to count the seconds too,” Dave retorted as he lowered his body into one of the brown leather chairs opposite Asher’s desk without waiting to be invited. Asher snorted. “Of course, how could I forget the seconds?” Dave gave him a big grin, extremely pleased with himself. He lifted his leg over the other and tapped his fingers on his raised knee. “So, how was the adventure?” He actually sounde
“Do you need any help with those?” Rick called out from the doorway. Mia lifted her head over the stacked boxes that were blocking her view of the door. Apart from the question, there was nothing in his demeanor that suggested he was even remotely interested in helping her lift heavy boxes from the back storage room to the front of the bar. She was certain it was one of those offers people made just to be kind, but don’t really expect to take them up on it. He was probably expecting her to say ‘no, it’s fine, I got it.’ He was about to be in for a shock. Mia gave him a broad smile. “Really? Gee… thanks.” And just as she had suspected, Rick hesitated at the door, his eyes widening. “Oh. Right... sure.” She stifled a laugh and carried two heavy boxes over to him. It was really nothing she couldn’t handle on her own, but he had offered. Who was she to pass up the offer? Rick grimaced once she released the boxe
There was a routine to Mia’s days. The Red eyes bar took up exactly nine mentally gruelling hours out of her days from four in the afternoon to one in the morning. She usually had a full eight hours of sleep from two to ten, unless she went for a run in her wolf form to release stress or just to stretch her muscles. The hours between ten and four were filled with mundane activities like laundry, cleaning, listening to music, and cooking. If she had still been in the pack lands, her days would have been extremely different. Her thoughts wandered to her days in the pack while she prepared some steak for herself. She was hungry enough to consider shifting into her wolf and eating the meat raw straight from the floor. Her wolf was in full agreement with that idea, but Mia held back. She was living in a human town. In a tiny apartment, in a building with three other apartments. She had to refrain from giving into such impulses. She could never be too safe.
In less than twenty-four hours, Asher was back on the jet, flying back to the city. The trip had been shorter than he could have imagined. His pilot tried not to show his shock at being woken up in the middle of the night and told to fly back so fast, but Asher knew the man was probably wondering what on earth was going on. Asher hadn’t even had the energy to fake an emergency to explain the abrupt change in plans. His mind was too disturbed to think straight. He was wondering what was happening. He had left the Red eyes bar feeling as though all the light in his life had gone off. It was as though a cold hand had gripped his insides and twisted until there was no more blood flowing in him. There was no bounce in his step. It wasn’t the first rejection of his life, but it certainly felt like the worst. For some reason, a reason he couldn’t even begin to explain, Mia’s rejection hurt more than the one he had received just months before. Asher fr
The bar was full. The usual patrons in various stages of intoxication occupied every available table and space. Mia assessed this in a split second. Calculating the probabilities and chances of escape. Small, seemingly insignificant, and very crucial facts aligned themselves in her head. One, the packed small bar would buy her some time. And second, the entire place smelled of alcohol and like a poorly ventilated sweaty room. But she knew if she could catch his scent, it wouldn’t take him long to catch hers. In conclusion, her chances were not good at all. Connor stood at the door. His muscular build and tall height put him well above the majority of people in the bar. He hadn’t yet looked her way. His wandering, studying eyes had his face turned towards a small table of noisy drunks in the back, but Mia knew it was him. Not only from his scent, but she could never forget that face. The head enforcer of Blue creek pack was one of those people a
Asher sat on a fallen tree, comfortably leaning against a rock. Mia watched him from a distance. He wore a black top that showed off his muscles and tattoos, just like she enjoyed. A black leather jacket sat next to him on the fallen tree trunk. It was part of his bike gear, but the bike was nowhere in sight because they had left it in a clearing almost a mile away.Mia completed her shift and stood up. She smiled as she watched her mate bounce their son on his knees and pointed out the trees and rocks. She couldn’t believe this was her life now. Not only did she have a mate, but she had a beautiful son as well, and she adored them both. They were in the woods because Mia needed to ‘stretch her legs’, as Asher liked to put it. And since the house they had bought wasn’t too far, Asher liked to ride them all on his bike to this secluded area.Since Ren wasn’t yet old enough to run with his mother, he stay
Asher watched the rather busy happenings of people passing by the window as he took a last sip of his coffee, then placed the empty mug back on the table. He hadn’t thought pack life was such a hive of activities. His thoughts, however, were not truly on thecoming and going of man and beast outside his window. No, his thoughts were bombarded with what he had discussed with Chris and James. If Levi would not fold, then they had to take drastic action and run.It was the same plan Asher had entertained the first time he was in the pack lands, chained to a wall. But unlike that time when death would have fallen on him swiftly in a blink of an eye. This time, the plan had potential to succeed. Chris and James were there to give Asher and Mia a fighting chance.Chris and James had already left the house to plot out the best route of escape. Asher was waiting for Mia to show up as she usually did, just as the sun touched the horizon.
Before he realized it, Asher had already spent an entire week with the pack. The days had flown by in an interesting mix of frustration and relief. The relief was, he had spent every waking hour in Mia’s company. Although under the very watchful eye of one of the pack enforcers. Asher imagined it was like having a chaperon in the nineteen hundreds. Making sure the virtue of a woman was kept intact while in the company of a man. It was a little late for that, of course, but it didn’t seem to deter their devotion to the task. Although it really pissed him off to high heaven and beyond, Asher managed to bite back his anger and tolerate it. At least he was grateful they hadn’t thrown him out, which would have made Levi extremely thrilled, he had no doubt. Something else that would have made Alpha Levi happy was James and Chris leaving the pack lands. But the duo had stuck around like an awful skin rash. The two made up Asher’s night c
Asher and Mia left the alpha’s house in a deep, thoughtful silence. It was like words failed them both at that moment. Or it was a matter of where to begin. It was actually the first occasion they were getting to talk ever since Connor and Sam had stormed into Asher’s house in the middle of the night. It was also their first time talking ever since Asher discovered what Mia was. Everything was now out in the open. There were no more secrets hidden in omissions, half truths, or lies. Mia bit her tongue and avoided Asher’s scrutinising gaze, which she felt like a burning flame on her skin. Her own thoughts caused a different fire within her. He had come back for her, yes, but she wasn’t still certain what he felt about the whole matter of werewolves. Not to mention her father’s frosty behaviour and the whole Dylan story. James’ words flashed through her mind. ‘What you see there is nature’s perfected killing machine. That is
Levi’s words filled the air and hung there like a toxic smell, ready to suffocate everyone present in the room. Or at least five out of the seven people present in the room. Everything and everyone seemed to first freeze in place, including the air, before things suddenly blew like a time bomb running out of time. Mia jumped off the couch, a deep growl erupting from her chest vibrating the walls when she faced her father. Her eyes glowed with her wolf, so close to the surface. She clenched and curled her hands, feeling her claws dig into her palm. Any second blood would sip out of the minor cuts and find its way to the floor next to her feet. Asher didn’t stand, but he moved to the edge of the couch, leaned his elbows on his knees and steepled his fingers before placing his chin on them. He closed his eyes for a moment and mentally counted to ten, very slowly, trying to calm himself before he did something stupid. When he
With the remaining injured, but lucky to be alive, members of Ice Lake leaving with literally their tails between their legs, Levi led the rest of his pack back to the houses. Despite the victory, Levi was not in a pretty state. The wounds on his body had stopped bleeding but still looked terrible. It probably didn’t help that he was also covered in dirt and Dylan’s blood as well. But Asher had to admire the man, even though he shuddered in disgust on his behalf. Levi did not so much as wince or show any sign he was in pain as he walked back with the pack. Asher, on the other hand, had unfortunately realized just how many injuries were all over his body and was not enjoying it one bit. His thoughts went back to Mia’s father and his confident steps. Asher was impressed, that was until James drew closer to him and whispered, “Don’t be fooled, these dogs heal in a matter of hours. By tomorrow that old goat will barely have a scratch on him
Her strong paws crushed leaves and twigs as they hit the ground in haste. Mia could now hear the obvious sounds of wolves fighting in the distance. It carried to her on the cool breeze that blew her way. She was almost there. The telling scent of blood was enough to churn her insides and confirm it. She didn’t exactly think she would single-handedly fight for her pack and spare them from certain death at the hand of the Ice Lake pack. Her ego was not that inflated. She rather just believed her presence would count. No sounds of a wolf running behind her floated her way. That only meant Sam hadn’t come after her. That was excellent. It would have been a struggle she neither had the time nor energy for. Despite her troubled thoughts, Mia had enough sense to come to an abrupt stop when she reached the fight and just quickly analyzed the situation. Almost immediately, the first thing she noticed amongst all the gruesome fighti
Mia sat up with a jerk when she heard her father’s howl cut through the air outside the house. Even though she was in a closed room, the sound had penetrated the walls and reached her as though the alpha had howled right there in the room with her. The Alpha’s call vibrated through her, calling to her wolf, calling to the pack. Calling to the bond that connected them all. It was a call to warn of intruders, a call to warn of serious trouble in their land. And a call to all pack members to fight for their pack. Mia recognized it all. Her feet hit the ground fast as she made her way to the closed window, desperate to find out what had provoked such a call. Nothing but calm trees met her eyes. She couldn’t see and anyone running in panic or otherwise. Her bedroom window didn’t have a view of the center of the pack homes, so it was pointless. Suddenly, behind her, the bedroom door opened. Mia turned to find her mother’s panicked face. In th
For a moment, it looked as though Alpha Levi didn’t know what to do with the human. He actually seemed to be speechless. Had it been a less tense moment, someone would have actually dared to laugh. Asher finally saw what Chris had meant by shocking the old alpha and surviving longer than five seconds. He didn’t dare to look away from Levi. The older man’s angry glare was almost too much to bear, but Asher refused to give in and look away. If he was going to get Mai, he knew he had to go through her father. Just as the tension seemed to reach breaking point, the Alpha’s attention snapped to the trees above them. He snarled. “You brought a rogue wolf and a blood sucker as your backup to steal my daughter?” Levi asked in an accusing but mocking tone. Asher chanced an indifferent shrug. “In desperate times, you can’t be too picky about who your friends are.” “You must be pretty desperate,” som
