Eugene’s voice was not considered loud by any means, but Fern was still choked up by his cold tone.

She glared at him without making a sound, but her anger was suppressed in her chest.

Rue did not understand why they had suddenly started quarreling, so she cautiously tugged on her mother’s sleeve and said softly, “Don’t be angry, Mom. It was my fault. I pestered Uncle into inviting me out for a meal. Don’t blame him for it.”
