Shawn thundered, "Claudia!"

He wanted to go after the heartless woman and drag her back for a full-blown confrontation, but Samson looked like he was fighting death itself.

Shawn's jaw clenched. Not wasting a second longer, he scooped Samson into his arms and hurried toward the black Porsche parked at the entrance.

"Get us to the nearest hospital now!" he urged.

Lucas bolted for the driver's seat while shouting after Claudia, "Mrs. Faulkner! Mr. Samson is convulsing from his fever! Won't you at least look at him? You can't just abandon him like this!"

Claudia's flashy sports car was parked beside Shawn's. Her back stiffened when she heard Lucas' desperate plea, but instead of looking out the window, she rolled it up to keep out the noise.

"Just ignore them and drive, Ethan," she said lightly.

Lucas stomped his foot in frustration as Claudia's red sports car whooshed past him and into the distance, but he couldn't afford to dawdle any longer.

Shawn was fuming in the backseat of the black Porsche, his gaze murderous as he barked an order at Lucas, "Have someone tail her. I want to know what she got up to in the past year!"

"Yes, sir!"

In the past, the doctors at the hospital told him that both Claudia and her baby died from labor complications. Shawn didn't see their bodies, but he did run a DNA test on the sample taken from the ashes. It matched Claudia's.

While he suspected Claudia might not be dead, all the hospital records he went through suggested otherwise. He even looked into her associates from the past but found no evidence to show she was still alive.

This wasn't his first time in Glenhallow, the place where she grew up. Nothing suspicious ever turned up on his previous visits.

But for all his efforts, Shawn never expected her to have staged her death. Worse still, she was living her life as if nothing happened. She even went so far as to pretend not to know him! He cursed her inwardly.

Samson's condition stabilized soon after they arrived at the hospital. The medical team carried out a series of tests and procedures to bring his fever down, following which he was admitted into the VIP pediatric ward. The doctor hooked him up to an IV drip, too.

Lucas, ever the efficient and trusty assistant, didn't take long to find useful information while investigating Claudia.

"Mr. Faulkner, I found something! You might want to sit down for this. The booking for the lounge Mrs. Faulkner used at the hotel this evening was made under the name 'Jolene Jefferson'!"

Upon hearing this, Shawn fixed Lucas with a dark, assessing look and pressed, "Are you sure?"

Lucas said solemnly, "Yes! We looked everywhere for the past year for signs that Mrs. Faulkner might be alive but couldn't find any. Do you think it's because she abandoned her old name and adopted a new life as Jolene Jefferson?

"She could be Bertram Jefferson's protégé and the woman we came to meet in Glenhallow! Why else would Jolene do business with the other families in Briarwood but not ours? She even turned down Mr. Samson's case even when we offered to pay her a small fortune!"

Shadows clouded Shawn's chiseled side profile as he mulled over Lucas' theory, a storm brewing in his eyes.

Indeed, he came to Glenhallow this time to find a woman named Jolene Jefferson.

Samson's behavior was out of control since Claudia's apparent death. He constantly got into fights with other children in preschool and refused to go to any of his extracurricular activities. Countless tutors gave up on him because he was impossible to deal with.

And these days, he resorted to crying and screaming, demanding to see his mother.

For the past year, Shawn had no choice but to play the role of both father and mother. He couldn't go anywhere freely, shackled to his motherly duties at home. At night, he and Samson often lost sleep and found themselves staying up until the morning.

Shawn reckoned that at this rate, Samson's tantrums and wild behavior would be the child's downfall. As such, he had no choice but to look around for a new tutor. Having exhausted the tutor pool in Briarwood, he brought Samson to Glenhallow and continued the hunt.

He heard that Bertram Jefferson, a renowned artist famous for his traditional ink paintings, was living in Glenhallow after retiring from the limelight. His protégé, Jolene Jefferson, won major international awards in the last year.

Her talent in traditional ink painting aside, Jolene was also a well-known psychologist who specialized in early childhood education. She counseled many petulant children from prestigious families and taught them art and calligraphy.

Shawn came to Glenhallow to meet Jolene, but Samson's health was delicate now, and his immune system went haywire. No sooner than they landed in Glenhallow did the little boy get violently sick and run a fever close to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

And Shawn certainly didn't expect to run into his supposedly dead wife.

If Claudia and Jolene were the same person, he would hunt her down and ask her how she could be so cruel as to abandon him and Samson. More importantly, he wanted to know how she managed to escape his radar for so long.

In all the years they were married and shared the same bed, he never knew Claudia could paint. He remembered she was left-handed and that her handwriting was no better than an illegible scrawl.

Shawn barked, "Find out where Bertram lives. We're visiting him tomorrow!"

"Yes, Mr. Faulkner," Lucas replied.

"And keep our identities a secret for now," Shawn said.

"Very well, sir."

The next day, in a countryside manor tucked away in the idyllic town by the outskirts of Glenhallow, Bertram hummed softly in his study. He pulled up the sleeves of his loose shirt, ready to work on another ink painting.

"Jolene, is it true that you ran into Shawn last night?" he asked with good humor.

Claudia was poring over her artwork. Dressed in a lilac satin robe, she looked soft and feminine, like a flower in full bloom. There was no warmth or humor in her delicate features, and she looked erudite with her hair pulled back into a low bun.

When she heard Bertram's question, she frowned and accidentally pressed her brush down too hard. The ink pooled and spread under the tip, ruining the painting.

"Yes, he's here in Glenhallow, and he recognized me right away. I told him he had the wrong person, though," she admitted, grabbing a new piece of parchment and laying it out before her.

She added, "But I didn't correct him when he said Claudia was dead. I am, after all, Jolene now."

Technically speaking, she was Jolene long before this, until her reunion with the Lowells. She was merely returning to her old life and resuming an old identity.

Everyone believed she was kidnapped and sold to a family in the sticks of Glenhallow at a young age. In the Lowells' eyes, she was uncultured and unrefined—a bumpkin raised in poverty.

What they didn't know was that she was actually sold into many families. She grew up feeling inferior and was forced to deal with many of life's hardships.

When she was ten years old, she met Bertram while he was in the countryside seeking inspiration for his work. He took her in after that. When he saw she had a flair for traditional ink painting, he imparted his knowledge into her and taught her everything she knew about the art.

A year ago, she returned to Glenhallow with Isabel after her desperate escape from Briarwood and cut ties with the Lowells and Shawn. For the past year, she focused on recuperating, raising Isabel, and keeping Bertram company.

She hardly ever reminisced on those she left behind in Briarwood. They no longer meant anything to her. She didn't want to go back to that life anymore, be it for the Faulkners or the Lowells.

Everything was fine until she ran into Shawn last night. She even ended up losing sleep over that soul-wrenching meeting.

Rage and derision twisted Claudia's features into a malicious grimace, matching the one Shawn saw on his last video call with her. This confirmed his gut feeling that the woman before him was his supposedly dead wife.He tightened his grip on Claudia's wrist and hissed, "Keeping up the front, are you?"His long, slender fingers reached for her waist. He recalled there was a scar there, marking Claudia's most sensitive spot. On the nights they spent together in the sheets, she would tremble uncontrollably whenever he grazed the scar that ridged her skin."You're most sensitive here, right?" Shawn murmured close to her ear, his warm breath tickling her skin as a wicked smile curled on his lips. "How long do you think you can keep up the act?"He traced her waist with his hand slowly, familiar with the places he mapped from their years together. However, he was stunned when he didn't feel the scar even through the thin fabric of her robe.Shawn froze when he realized there was likely

Ethan immediately pulled Claudia close and wrapped an arm around her waist. He eyed Shawn warily and growled, "Don't get any funny ideas."Shawn's face darkened even more when he heard this. "You had a home and a family, Claudia, yet you abandoned them for some gigolo?""Please refrain from hurling unwarranted insults, mister," Ethan drawled as he pulled out a piece of paper that looked a lot like a marriage license. Holding it up before Shawn's face, he added, "Jolene and I are legally married."Shawn could practically picture the grins on Ethan's and Claudia's faces when they put their names down on the license. The words "Jolene Jefferson" and "Ethan Brandt" leaped out at him from the paper, and the date of registration was—His heart sank when he saw that the license was dated three years ago.Ethan calmly kept the license aside and said, "I suggest you hire a therapist to help you cope with your grief, Mr. Faulkner. It seems it's getting the better of your sanity."With th

Shawn's counteroffer was so absurd that even Ethan fumed. He rose to his feet, clenching his fist like he was about to punch Shawn.Claudia's gaze darkened, but before she could refuse Shawn's proposition, he stared at her chillingly and bit out, "I will never agree to your terms, so unless you agree to mine, you won't get your precious Mrs. Jefferson's painting back."Asshole! He was just as much of a bully as before, always resorting to blackmail when he couldn't get what he wanted. She gritted her teeth. Emilia continued angrily, "That boy is becoming more impossible by the day! It's like he's become a different person entirely since Claudia died. How am I supposed to cope with that?"And it's been two years, but Shawn hasn't even asked me to marry him! What will I do if things drag on like this?"Lorraine comforted her, saying, "Calm down. You and Shawn grew up together; he shares a special bond with you. As for Claudia, you must understand she was the mother of his child, and it's only natural for him to grieve her departure."But men are fickle creatures, and they move on quickly. Don't worry; I'm sure it won't take long for him to turn around and come back to you."Upon seeing the disgruntled look on Emilia's face, Lorraine grabbed her hand and added patiently, "Don't forget what you're marrying Shawn for. Don't lose sight of your ambitions because of sentiments like Claudia did."Emilia scoffed at this. "Don't worry, Mom. I haven't forgotten our plans. I'm not a fool like Cla

As doubts and suspicions seized Lorraine, a sudden idea flashed in her mind. Smiling warmly at Claudia, she said, "Well, you must be tired after the long journey to Briarwood, Ms. Jefferson. You're welcome to join us for a meal, Ms. Jefferson."Claudia was placid as ever as she nodded at Lorraine, accepting the latter's invitation. The more her enemies tested her, the more magnanimous she had to be.The tension was thick as everyone adjourned to the dining room.Emilia couldn't stop shooting deadly looks at Claudia, jealousy and spite clouding her gaze. Ethan shook his head. "The police came to get my statement, and I told them about Peter. They tried looking into it, but they couldn't find any proof of him hiring those men to abduct you."Ethan also secretly sent his men to try and track down the whereabouts of Claudia's and Isabel's hair samples. Yet, he couldn't even find a trace of where they were.Claudia's heart dropped. She was annoyed by how good Peter was at this."There's something I've been curious about for quite some time." Ethan paused briefly and carefully chose his words. He met Claudia's eyes. "Why is your family name Lowell?"The Lowells were a family of five. Yet, three different last names were used among their family members. It was one of the topics people in high society enjoyed discussing. In their social circle, it was widely known that Lorraine's mother and Claudia's maternal grandmother had Lowell as her last name. Back then, Claudia's maternal grandfather joined the Lowell family as a matrilocal son-in

Claudia also heard that Peter opened an underground boxing club after returning from abroad before he met Lorraine. He was lucky enough to know Lorraine and get her help in transforming his business into a legitimate one. Otherwise, he might have become one of the targets when the government was trying to purge all criminal and illegal activities back then.Seeing the impression these men gave off and how differently they were acting, Claudia had a feeling they were sent by Peter.A crowd formed around the area at that point, and the police arrived at the scene as well. They sealed off the area by putting up the police line. However, almost all of them stayed put and observed the situation. It was because the bodyguards who were trying to shield Claudia and Isabel from the assailants were about to reach their limits. When Claudia saw how the bodyguards in front of her were slowing down due to exhaustion, she subconsciously held Isabel closer to her body.Just then, a sharp dagger

However, those men were annoyingly clever. They opted to retreat immediately as soon as they realized they couldn't get close to Claudia and Isabel. As time dragged on, Ethan's men might gradually lose focus and lower their guard. Their enemies would surely seize the opportunity to get what they were aiming for then."We need to think of a way to put a stop to this once and for all," Ethan said.Bertram slowly shook his head. "The Faulkner and Lowell families each possess great power and influence. It's impossible to put a stop to it for good. The only way to resolve this crisis is to create a bigger problem for them."Bertram met Ethan's gaze. "I've never been interested in gaining or fighting for power and influence. Claudia asked all of a sudden. "We need to create a diversion. Do you get it?"Ethan understood what she meant instantly. "I know what to do now."…A shrill voice screamed inside the Lowell residence at a late hour.Emilia had a look of disdain on her face as she stood at the side. After composing her emotions, she adopted a worried expression and stepped forward."Claudia's being too much this time! She shouldn't have hit Benedict even if she was trying to hide her identity!
