The essay had ceased to be important to me. I felt irritated and turned on.

"Hey, how much of the essay have you finished?" Kol asks me out of the blue while grabbing my laptop.

He undoubtedly witnessed me spending the last few seconds staring blankly at my laptop. Fantastic.

"Two paragraphs." I see him reading my essay as I say this.

He returns the laptop to my line of sight. "It's really good; you always do well in essays."

I sigh. "You need help with yours, don't you?"

He chuckles. "How dare you think so little of me?" He gives me a disinterested look. "Okay, yeah, you were right. I do need help."

"Have you at least taken time to read the book?" I grab his laptop off his workstation.

"Yeah, of course," he says as I start reading his thesis statement.

"Kol—your thesis statement sucks." I don't even try to finish reading it.

"Ouch, that just hurt me deep down to my soul."

I pull out a piece of lined paper and say, "Kol." I jot down the main line and all the significant details of
