Ember sneered and said nothing.

When Caleb saw her get emotional, he lowered his voice. "Em, I wasn't trying to take Avery away from you. I was just—"

Ember didn't want to listen to his excuses anymore. Before Caleb finished speaking, she interrupted him, "Stop explaining. Since Avery is willing to be with you, then he can stay here."

Things had gotten out of control. Avery wrinkled his nose with an indignant look and said in a choked voice, "Mommy, I was wrong. Please don't abandon me..."
