Chapter 6

Magdalena shivered; not from the cold, but from the sheer delight that coursed through her body as she nuzzled close to me while we made our way down the street.  It had been centuries since she’d huddled this close to anyone -human or supernatural.  The heady, sexual, and exhilarating sensation far outweighed any desire to drink my blood.

Our conversation proved light, jovial, and delightful.  Magdalena found herself rapidly developing a comfort with me and it felt good. It felt very good.

She’d experienced this once before, centuries ago in another time and what seemed like another life when she met and fell in love with Marcus Wexton, Earl of Wetherford.  She was touring homes of the wealthiest of the ton in Wales with her cousin, Evelyn, who was a few hundred years her senior. Evelyn had defied the vympire code and taken a human husband.  They weren’t far from Marcus’s estate when their buggy lost a wheel. It w

Shen directed the cab driver to stop in front of Magdalena’s apartment building and got out. He watched the cab pull away and instantly regretted not asking him to wait. What if I wasn’t here? Since I hadn’t come back to our motel room he assumed I was with Magdalena, but what if I wasn’t? Where else would I be? He wished we dared use our cell phones. As he started up the set of steps that joined the sidewalk to the front door of the tall, century old brick building, he caught a glimpse of a shadow out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head quickly, but not quickly enough because the shadow was gone. When he focused once again on his ascent up the stairs leading from the sidewalk into the building’s vestibule, his path was blocked. He sucked in air as his mind registered what stood before him. There was no mistaking it was a vampire. To make matters even more intense, he looked familiar. Shen was su

Bruce stood on the porch of his mountain cabin and watched the sun set over the top of the tamarack pines that dominated the hillsides of the Southern Tier, New York. Tonight the moon would be full. He was already feeling the effects of the change his body was readying for. He and Tatyana had prepared the small root cellar beneath the cabin. It took some doing, but he finally managed to convince her to remain in the cabin at night while he was locked in the root cellar. It was difficult to get her to listen to reason, but when he pointed out that they could still communicate telepathically, she grudgingly agreed.Bruce was frustrated; not just because he’d turn yet again in a few hours, but because I’d called him with the news of Shen’s abduction. How could he help? Until the cursed moon surrendered to the sun and he was once again in control and able to function as a man, he could do nothing to help us. Even then, he wasn&rsquo

I adjusted my body behind the steering wheel of the rental car. I hated driving long distances and even though it was only a few hours’ drive from Middletown to Owego, it felt like an eternity when there was so much gnawing at me. Shen was in the clutches of some of the evilest creatures ever to exist. Even if they weren’t the evilest, I was certain they came close. I was at a loss at what to do.After calling Bruce to tell him about the situation with Shen and hearing the desperation and despair in his voice over his feelings of helplessness, I decided to go to Owego to join him. At least with the two of us in one location, the fears of what was happening to the other would be eliminated.I’d brought Magdalena and Garth with me. I had no idea how they could help or what could be done at this point, but the more on our team the better. Garth put up a bit of resistance until I confided in him about what Bruce was dealing w

Tatyana slumped against the back of the seat as the car sped down the highway. They’d blindfolded her to keep her from knowing their destination. Little did they realize that the blindfold prevented them from seeing her close her eyes as she let her abilities to take over. Thinking her asleep, none of the vampires who with gifts were using their limited telepathic abilities to intercept her efforts. She was grateful that they were of Wadim’s lineage and not that of a true vampire. The human DNA dulled much of their senses and, although they could still read minds to some extent, it was limited and they needed to really focus in order to do it; not like the natural, almost involuntary ease in which a pure vampire with telepathic capability would accomplished it.Her first task was to get a message to Elsa. She hoped the woman was fast asleep. It would be easier to get inside her head if she wasn’t awake and concentrating on something e

Elsa Prescott sat up in bed. Cocking her head to the side, she listened. She’d heard a voice. Was someone in the house?Grabbing the baseball bat that was hidden beneath her bed, she slipped her feet into the slippers she kept positioned for easy access, donned her robe as quickly as she could, and tipped-toed out of her bedroom into the grand hallway of her huge turn of the century Coronado Island home. The floor boards creaked under her weight as she reached the top of the stairs. She stood as still as she could while she waited to see if whoever was intruding in her house had heard her.All was silent. She moved across the landing to the rooms on the other side and slowly peeked into each doorway. Charles was sleeping peacefully in his crib and the other bedrooms were empty.Time to check downstairs. She held her breath, hoping the thick, imported oriental runner that she’d installed down the cente

Bruce and I stood at the end of the rutted dirt path that passed for a road in the empty clearing. There was just enough room for Garth to position Bruce’s SUV in front of the opening in a group of boulders. We were thankful we’d decided to use his SUV instead of the rental car. All eyes were on Magdalena as she touched the boulders to get a sense of where they might have gone from there, but the trail just stopped.“I can’t get a sense of where she is anymore. She isn’t sending any more telepathic messages to Elsa... I don’t know,” she sighed.“How about you,” Bruce said as he looked at Garth. “Can you pick up their scent?”“A little, but not enough to follow,” Garth muttered.Garth was angry with the situation. Never before had he been outsmarted by a vampire. The fact that they were mutant-vampires made it even worse.Bruce pressed his nose agai

Elsa heaved her bulk from the back seat of the cab while the driver pulled her suitcase out of the trunk. Looking up at the rows of balconies creeping up the side of the white brick building before her, she guessed which one belonged to the condo of her destination. The third one from the top on the left, she thought. So, let me see... that would make it the one, two, three, four, five, six, seventh floor. Hmm, unlucky. The sound of her luggage bag being unceremoniously dropped onto the sidewalk beside her as the cab driver grunted ‘good-bye’ ended her little guessing game. She stacked her carry-on on top of her luggage bag and secured the pull handle of her bag into her grip before starting into the building. It looked to be old enough to have come from the era of stairs. She fervently hoped an elevator awaited her.She was not only relieved when she came upon the ornately gilded ele

I sat in the far side of my living room and watched Jess move amongst us. She was doing her best to hide her animosity toward almost everyone in the room, while she served ham sandwiches and beer. It was a simple fare, but a welcome one for stomachs that shamelessly announced the fact that we hadn’t eaten for over twelve hours. Magdalena declined the sandwich but gladly accepted the beer. We’d spent the better part of the last hour in deep conversation about a solution to the situation. Not only did we have to find a way to rescue Shen and Tatyana, but now we had to face the fact that Jessica was dangerously close to becoming a vampire. I recognized the signs well from my days of being with Mie-Lien. My heart felt like it was ripped in pieces at the thought of such a thing happening to poor Jess. She didn’t deserve it. She’d never played a role in the hunt for vampires. In fact, she’d argued and fought with me continually about

Osip paced the confines of his desert den. He’d harbored such high hopes of winning the favor of Count Dracula, only to have them shattered by that bitch, Lucinda. How could he have known she was so bonded to Nambru that she’d take her life rather than become his bride? Now, who would help him care for the baby he planned on pawning off to Dracula as his grandson? He didn’t want just any female. If that was the case, he’d be gone right now. The woman he took needed to be believable. She needed to be able to fool Dracula into thinking she wasn’t just the mother of his grandchild, but someone alluring enough to catch the eye of the very discerning Damitru. Osip saw very few who fit that bill roaming the halls of Nambru’s den. Lucinda had been perfect; perfect for the ruse, and perfect for him because she aroused him insensibly. Damn her!He stood before the mirror and adjusted the n

Tatyana stared at the room full of fallen vampires as they slowly disintegrated before her very eyes. The burning pain was lessening enough for her to be able to stand on her own, but her chest felt constricted; giving her the feeling of extreme claustrophobia. She needed to get outside and breathe some fresh air.Pushing past Bruce with remarkable strength, she rushed down the stairs and picked her way through the debris and remnants of fallen vampires as quickly as she could. There were still a few vampires to deal with, so Bruce wasn’t able to follow her as he would have liked. Grumbling his dissatisfaction over the situation, he continued his onslaught with a renewed vengeance.Tatyana had almost reached the exit when Elsa called out her name. Stopping short, she turned slowly to look into the face of her dear friend and ward. Elsa had all she could do to control the reaction she had to the changes that had occurred on Tatyana’s

Elsa made her way down the dark and silent corridor. Maria gave her detailed instructions on how to find Mervin’s suite of rooms. Since he was new in residence, Maria wasn’t able to provide much information on the wizard, but from what she did say Elsa got the impression the wizard was more learned in alchemy than he was in spirits and spells. She hoped this was the case. Her body ached with each step she took. She longed to find an easy chair somewhere and take a much needed nap.I’m getting too old for this, she thought. As she neared the end of the long, dimly lighted hallway she spotted a faint light beneath a thick mahogany door. The beautifully carved, fire breathing dragons that were artfully depicted on the heavy wood told her she’d reached her destination.Maria had assured her that no vampires would be found near Mervin suite, but even so, she decided to take a precaution. Shen spent the rest of the ride sharing as much information about the den and its layout as he could remember, including the route he took for escape. By the time we reached the motel, we had a fairly clear picture in our minds of the den’s interior and its occupants. We went to McDonald’s drive through and loaded up on fast food before returning to the room. Shen ate the majority of his meal before we reached the hotel, but not before Elsa produced a packet of wet wipes and insisted he clean the blood from his hands and face before eating.Once in the hotel room, Shen immediately set to cleansing the rest of his body. The shower was warm and inviting and more than a little refreshing. With the water as hot as he could tolerate it, Shen stood so that the pulsing shower could massage away the tension in the overused muscles of his thighs.I paced the room while I waited for Shen to finish showering. My friend gave the impressio

Shen’s lungs were screaming for relief as he pushed himself beyond his normal endurance level through the darkened caves. At one point it was so black he couldn’t see his hand before his face. Even so, he continued to run at top speed. He didn’t want to take the chance of standing in one place long enough for one of the guards to detect his scent. He came across limited obstacles in his path, which only proved that the caves were well used by the vampires. He wanted to slow down and search for a less popular route, but Maria’s warning rang in his mind loud and clear. He couldn’t take the chance that he might find an easier route to exit before the guards were able to detect him. When light finally lured him from off in the distance, he slowed down slightly. He did his best to listen for movement over his own heavy breathing.Aware that his breathlessness could catch the attention of the vampires whose h

Shen leaned against the far wall of the grand ballroom. It was remarkable how closely Gyozo had copied the décor of Wadim’s den of iniquity. If Shen didn’t know better, he’d have thought himself back there, but he’d destroyed that den and watched it go up in flames.Something was amiss, but he had only a hint of what it was. There was a buzzing of a celebration of some sort about to occur. He’d heard excited whispers of a wedding, but who was to be married to who was still a mystery. Why would they share such information with him? He was just there as a captive to breed their stock. Breeders were the second lowest form of life in a den such as this; the lowest being the actual food source. The fact that he’d even been summoned from his prison cell to attend the festivities surprised him.He was ordered to stand against the back wall, out of the way of the milling crowd as colorful gown

Elsa’s large frame blocked the doorway of the living room. It was impossible to see past her. To make matters worse, she didn’t seem inclined to move.“You can’t hide it from me,” I growled. “Sooner or later you’ll have to step aside.”Elsa heaved a sigh. I was right, of course. She couldn’t protect me from what occurred, nor should she. I seemed prone to run with vampires. Perhaps a reality check was what I needed to straighten me up.I sucked in air to help steady my nerves before I stepped forward when Elsa finally moved aside and motioned for me to pass. I needed to see, yet I feared seeing. Would her body lay there headless? It was how Magdalena killed the other vampires. I squeezed my eyes shut, as if by doing so it would better prepare me for what I was about to see.Magdalena was still kneeling over Jess’s body when I entered the room. She seemed

Magdalena watched Elsa pace the small balcony through the dirty pane of the sliding door. The woman may be getting up in years, but she still carried herself like royalty. Magdalena wondered about the priestess’s heritage. The high cheekbones that accentuated full shapely lips hinted of familiarity. It haunted the vympire. There was something important she needed to remember; something very, very important.“Can I get you anything?” Jess asked as she knelt down in front of Magdalena and removed the scarf from her neck. “Are you hungry?”The raw puncture wounds on Jess’s neck turned Magdalena’s stomach. She’d never been this close to an open wound of a human for this long. It was unsettling and truly a test of her endurance.“Please, no. I don’t drink human blood,” Magdalena said with a wince. “Cover your wounds.”

She was barely able to hear the door open and close. Whoever entered did so with the utmost care to go unnoticed. Tatyana braced herself as she listened to the newcomer’s footsteps scuff lightly across the thick, ruby colored Persian carpet. The average human would probably not have been able to hear her visitor’s approach at all. Her naturally acute hearing was fine honed over her years of captivity. She was certain that hearing the approach of the enemy so that she could have time to hide was often all that saved her from the fate of so many others.Standing as immobile as possible, Tatyana closed her eyes to put her third sight to work. The hazy image of a tall, slender man waved before her. He looked young, perhaps in his early thirties. It was difficult to tell if he was a vampire or human. His image kept flickering. This was something that rarely happened when she used her visionary abilities. That fact,
