Chapter 9

I found Pierre and Luthias huddled in deep conversation in the center of the small hall.  The sparsely furnished, tapestry lined room was reserved for more intimate gatherings.  I was told it was a mirror of the great hall, just on a lesser scale. Taking measure of its grand size, I couldn’t help wondering how much space the great hall consumed.

They didn’t notice me at first, which gave me the opportunity to listen in to their conversation enough to get the gist of their topic.  They were discussing me.

“How well do you know her,” my French rival asked with an undertone that suggested he suspected Luthias knew me on the intimate basis that he actually did.

I held my breath while I awaited Luthias’s response.

“Not well at all, your grace,” Luthias lied in a hushed tone that hinted of distain. My hand flew to my mouth to stifle the gasp that came of its own accord.  “I spent only the

As time wore on, my body recovered from the feeling of revulsion the drinks that I’d forced down caused. Thoughts of the love couple eased into the back of my mind. I found myself actually relaxing and even enjoying Pierre’s company. He proved to be witty and incredibly charismatic when he wasn’t on guard about his position within the kingdom’s realm. I even surprised myself by wondering what it might be like to rule the kingdom with him by my side. I forced the thought from my mind by pushing images of Geo into the forefront. The fact that I could be jealously unnerved over Abigail’s reunion with Luthias and needed to force images of Geo into my head in order to push thoughts of partnering with Pierre out of it concerned me. I’d been a vampire long enough to understand that vamp genes were highly sexual genes that sometimes needed to be kept under control, but I didn’t believe I could blame my fickleness on them. My feeli

Several weeks passed without my agreeing to see Luthias. I used whatever excuse I could to avoid him, while I grilled Ferguson on the ways of the castle and Vampire Land. Pierre took it upon himself to escort me through the gardens daily, but otherwise, he kept busy with mysterious matters of state that he assured me I’d find too taxing without being slowly integrated into Vampire Land’s political structure. He insisted that being seen walking in the gardens with him on a daily basis was the best way to develop acceptance with my subjects. I grew frustrated with my lack of progress. I knew I needed to reconnect with Luthias if I was to make headway, but I just couldn’t bring myself to face him.I contemplated the fact that my childish behavior was threatening the success of my mission while made my way to what many would consider an ostentatious dining room and took my seat at the center of the oversized table. Our discussion about my dating Pierre proved, without a shadow of a doubt the depth of Luthias’s love for me. Whether it was because of his bond with Geo or the fact that I’d met Geo and fallen for him prior to meeting Luthias, I don’t know, but he tolerated my feelings for Geo and accepted the courtship challenge grandfather put in place for the three of us. He did not, however, feel the same when it came to my being with, or even thinking about being with anyone else. He made that abundantly clear after we’d satiated our passion and were once again calm enough to discuss our situation. Not only was he a raging, jealous fool at the thought of my possibly falling in love with and giving my heart to Pierre, he went against all the promiscuous vampirism traits of Vampire Land as the Verso side of him poured forth and he declared an intolerance for the thought of Pierre even touching me in an intimate manner. Talk about double stan

I can’t remember scrubbing in a bath as hard as I scrubbed to rid any and all remnants of Pierre’s coupling with me. Even my encounter with Abigail paled in comparison. My body felt like I’d rolled in a puddle of thick, evil mud that dried and caked on me before I could reach water to rid myself of it. I bathed fully before calling for a fresh bath and bathing once again. I was given little resistance from the staff about this odd request. I assumed they attributed it to my being of foreign roots or just didn’t dare defy the queen no matter how shaky a ground she was presently on with her subjects. If it emphasized that I didn’t belong, I didn’t care. All I cared about was getting every tiny speck of Pierre off me and out of me and I wouldn’t stop washing until I was confident I’d accomplished it.I couldn’t blame Luthias for his inability to hold me close while Pierre’s sexu

Had I not known that Jason Masters was a werewolf, I doubt I’d have ever figured it out; especially since I’d only recently learned that werewolves existed and was never exposed to one. Now that I was familiar with vampires, I realized that there were subtle differences between them and humans. Their body temperature was lower, their skin tone was less robust, and their tolerance to the high temperatures on earth’s desolated land and the intense rays of the sun was poor. I had no idea what to look for when it came to spotting a werewolf. With the exception of his overly muscular body, Jason Masters looked just as normal as any other man I might meet. Unlike the vampires, his skin was rich and swarthy. His carnivore diet clearly aided in maintaining his strong, chiseled physique and swarthy complexion. His arms were thick with rich black curls. I could see tufts of similar curls struggling to free themselves from the

I’d slipped back into a deep sleep almost immediately after sending a message via courier raven for Gwendoline to meet me at the mutant-vampire subterranean kingdom. The courier raven wouldn’t be able to penetrate the portal to Verso, so my message needed to be delivered to Desolation and then be taken to Gwendoline by one of Desolation’s residents with the courage and ability to enter Verso when the need arose. Since the residents of Desolation revered Gwendoline, I was sure her safety was a priority. I was fearful of prying eyes reading my request and refusing to deliver it to my mentor, but I felt I had no choice but to send for her. Something was disturbingly wrong with me. It was more than just being pregnant. Pregnancy shouldn’t make me feel as weak as I felt.I was concerned about the courier raven reaching its destination. I wasn’t sure a message was ever sent to Desolation from Vampire Land. To insure the raven fo

I don’t know why it surprised me when I realized the distance we needed to cover in order to reach the mutant vampire subterranean kingdom from Vampire Land. It made sense that Sybil would want to keep her kingdom safe from all enemies, not just humans. By staying as far away from the vampire’s territory as possible and keeping under the radar by living underground, her people ran less of a risk of running into their enemies. It was the next best thing to the protection veil Gwendoline placed over Verso. The mutant kingdom may not be hidden by a magical veil that created an alternate reality, but it was fairly well hidden none-the-less. We would have to leave the comfortable climate of our remote mountain wilderness and cross barren land that still spoke of the nuclear scorching it received a century ago. Although it hadn’t been that long since I’d made just such a journey, I was a human who grew up in and was well acclimated to

Two of my ribs were broken. One of their brittle tips rested dangerously near to my heart. Had Luthias not forced me to remain still after hearing the news about my intended demise, I quite possibly would have saved my subjects the trouble of killing me.“I thought vampires healed quickly,” I complained as the village medicine woman wrapped a bandage around my chest.Jason and his crew stepped outside of the hut for the sake of my modesty, but for the sake of my safety, Luthias stayed behind. It was no secret to our companions that Luthias and I were lovers, so no one protested about possible impropriety.“You have to feed in order to heal fast, especially when you’ve been ingesting vervain to weaken you for as long as you have,” Luthias whispered. “Then there’s the unknown effects that potion could have on you.“Feed on who?” I asked.“Well,” he said as he ey

It took some time before life settled down. Luthias left Verso when his week of further convalescing was up, but not before making love to me one last time. It is a moment I will hold deep in my heart forever.Gwendoline and I got back to work focusing on developing my magical skills. My grandparents set to work on a spell to enable werewolf hybrids to enter Verso. Gwendoline was allowed to monitor their progress, but we felt her emotional attachment to the situation might impair their progress. She grudgingly stepped aside and allowed them the necessary magic freedom they required.I saw very little of Geo, who had his hands full with being King. With the threat of Bartholomew’s army at a minimum, he was able to focus on bringing the kingdoms back to order. His first task was to find the residents of Verso who supported Pierre in his schemes and bring them to justice. He took the burden of ruling Vampire Land from me while I m

It took blood donations from me, Geo, Gwendoline, my grandparents, and a few volunteers from Desolation before Luthias’s wounds began to heal. Gwendoline administered an antidote for the werewolf bites. The one on his shoulder left an angry scar that she wondered would ever fade. Only time would tell if the antidote was strong enough to combat the amount of venom Jason’s bites injected. We took the time required for Luthias to completely heal to rest our own weary bones and enjoy our children.****“Are ye going to give that lass a name?” Gwendoline asked as she quietly entered my bedroom.I lay across my bed with Braedon on one side of me and my daughter on the other.“Geo got to name his son,” I said. “Luthias should have the same privilege with his daughter.”“That’s lovely,” she said as she stroked my daughter’s thick dar

My eyes were blindfolded, but I was able to decipher that we were in a cave by the way the acoustics and the feeling of cold stone and earth beneath me. My hands were tied behind my back the then the rope was extended to tie my feet together as well. I had no other choice but to lie on my side in the fetal position while I listened to Luthias beg for my safety and release.“What happens with her will be determined when Lord Pierre arrives, no sooner,” Jason grumbled.“I can’t believe you never consummated the marriage you idiot,” Abigail said with angst.“She was swollen with child,” Jason argued. “I’m not a monster.”“You can still consummate with a child in there,” she hissed.“I was warned it would be too dangerous,” he said defensively.“How could you trick me like that?” I asked weakly.“She’s awake,&rdquo

Abigail’s hideout was south of Vampire Land, hidden in a remote valley that was surrounded by a forest that saw better days. Its trees boasted the scars of a forest fire that tried, but failed to consume them. Charred remnants of the trees the fire managed to destroy were scattered across the forest floor. They acted as fertilizer for the young seedlings that peeked through the soil.Lord Moken returned to Vampire Land immediately after our meeting. He’d swiftly pulled together order within the castle. Pierre learned of his intention and escaped with his loyal followers, but there were still plenty left to gather together for the battle ahead. Geo and I discussed calling for backup from Verso and then thought better of it. The combination of mutant-vampires and the vampires from Vampire Lands should prove more than enough to battle Pierre and Abigail, even with their weapon. We met up with Lord Moken and his throng at the

I refused to allow Geo to treat me like a china doll and insist I stay behind when they went to rescue Luthias. I no longer had a life that depended on my keeping it safe in my womb. I was fully recovered and felt stronger than ever. Not to mention, whether Julia liked it or not, I was also their rightful queen. It took my throwing that fact, plus the fact that I was queen of Vampire Land, at Geo before he’d relent and include me in on the plans.Since we were going up against Vampires from Vampire Land, I sent a message to Lord Moken, commanding he meet us to discuss strategy. He arrived with surprising speed and equally surprising eagerness to assure me that battle was something he excelled in. He would see to it that, not only would Lord Luthias be returned to me, but that scum Pierre and his consorts would pay dearly for their deeds. I reminded him that Abigail had her own agenda and Bartholomew’s weapon of

“I’ve given birth to two children over the last year and both are kept from me,” I pouted.“Ever since I first laid eyes on you, you’ve been a whiney bitch,” Julia complained as she paced the small room I occupied. “I can’t understand what Geo sees in you. The fact that both Geo and Luthias claim to love you absolutely boggles my brain!”“You’re the one they claim Geo’s been running with,” I said, accusingly.“You’re correct in that, “she said with a sly grin.“You had to have forced him,” I snapped jealously.I was being ridiculous, of course. Julia was a pretty thing who I could easily see catching the eye of either Geo or Luthias. I’d never been jealous of her or considered her a rival because she was a mutant-vampire. I could see now, that I’d underestimated the situation.“I loved Ge

My eyes refused to open as soft, gentle kisses coaxed me out of a deep, all-consuming sleep. The kisses felt familiar, soothing, and loving. I smiled. Luthias had returned.I stretched my arms up over my body and arched my back as I forced my eyelids open. The world was fuzzy, but I could see the outline of his dark hair, pulled back in a neat queue at the base of his neck. This strong hands stroked my cheeks while he muttered words I was yet to be able to understand. It wasn’t Luthias returned to me. It was Geo. Was I dreaming? I reached out to stroke his cheek. His face felt real. His kisses felt real. I wished my eyes would focus so I could see him clearly. When my efforts to see him proved too taxing, I gave up and allowed my eyelids to close again.A sense of security came over me as his strong arms carefully lifted me from my chair. I felt as if I was floating while he carried me

I awoke to the sound of Gwendoline arguing with Gondofini.“Ye will stay away from the lass, if ye know what’s good for ye,” she snapped with her hands placed firmly on her hips.“I only wish to examine her so I can assure her subjects of her well-being,” he insisted as he attempted to walk around her.For such a petite woman, Gwendoline made a frustratingly formidable blockage that Gondofini just couldn’t find a way around.“What subjects might that be?” she asked vehemently. “’Twouldn’t be Lord Blaise, would it?”“What’s going on?” I asked as I sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. “I feel like I’ve been drugged.”“I have no doubt,” Gwendoline practically hissed. “Ye ran a risk letting this one walk free. Our volunteers were successful in confiscating one of the notorious weapons from Bartholomew’s army. They’d kidnapped a few of the guards and managed to get them to confess that the army was still uncertain as to the location of Vampire Land. It was true they were a few days away, but they’d chosen a direction to search that would lead them further from us. The volunteers took it upon themselves to leave clues that would encourage the army scouts to believe the path they chose was the correct one.The kingdom was encouraged. After sending the weapon off to be analyzed by members of Vampire Land’s scientific and military communities, Lord Basha suggested we move forward with the wedding plans. He felt strongly that the distraction of such a happy event was just what the kingdom needed to ease the stress of waiting for an attack that may or may not come.Luthias was understandably eager to wed.
