JOSH'S POV

I knew she was here for me. Once a snake always a snake.

I sat at my usual spot, feeding my eyes while monitoring my dad's lawyer. He frequented the gym, and I had to keep tabs on him.

"Get into the car," I said to her when the instructor had left, there was no need for all the drama.

Without hesitating, she left. Without taking the key, though, so I wondered what she would use in opening it.

"Where is the girl?" The gym instructor asked when he came back.

I shrugged my shoulders in response and stood to leave.

The lawyer didn't come, I hoped to see him the next day.

As I walked back to the car, I remembered how Mirabelle died, and how that stupid Kevin almost ruined my whole plans.

That evening, I also attended the international conference, the one Rubby and Alex attended. I had set a camera on the food tray brought into their room that night; Alex had made the job easier for me by insisting that the innocent girl sleep in that room, on that bed, too.

While I organised th

JOSH'S POV "You came prepared," she whispered."Yes I sure did, and you might end up not dead before the end of today.""Then let's strike a reasonable deal. I know everything and everywhere in his penthouse; I can cry my way back into his house; I still have got a card to his door, I still know the gate lock, I still have Alex wrapped around my fingers, so reconsider," she pleaded.Though she sounded confident, her shaky voice betrayed her. I had never seen someone so selfish and greedy to the point of death."You have Alex wrapped in your arms huh?" I scoffed "Indeed, yet he had you thrown out of the office like a nobody the other day.""I can still hook him, he hasn't gotten over me. At least not yet.""Young lady delete that picture right away, the recording too, the cheque is all I have to offer, nothing more."She hesitated for a moment, acting as though she was finding it hard to open her phone, then broke into a run. Now, here was what happened; remember, we were on the rooft

ALEXANDER'S POV "I will drive," Rubby offered when we got to my car."I will call him," I replied, referring to my driver, who had been absent for some time; he had taken a leave to take care of his sick sister."Don't bother him, I will drive okay," Rubby pressed, till I had no choice but to succumb. She climbed into the driver's seat, and soon, we headed home."I suppose his name is Mr Andrew huh?" I asked my mom the moment I met her."Alex, we can talk about this some other time; you...""We will talk about it now, Mom, right now." I was heartbroken and she knew it, so she knew better than to play dumb games or lie even more."So he is Alive?"Her pleading gaze darted to Rubby, who was also helpless."Yes," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. The world around me Suddenly seemed to tilt as My heart pounded in my chest. At first, I always thought I was a Wolfe, but now my real father is even still alive? My hands curled into a fist as I stared at my mother. TRISHA'S POV "Idiot!" I shouted after his car. To think I had even gotten him, only to be pushed away in the most humiliating way.He was clearly disgusted merely by my presence, not to talk of what I had to say. To crown my pain, it was Rubby again."And to think you had the guts to come to me after you tried pouring acid on the woman I love," I mimicked, sticking out my tongue and making funny faces."Rubby, Rubby!" I shouted. The gym instructor had come out now and had probably watched the drama unfold. He stood with the balm, shaking his head in pity."Have you got nothing else to do old man?" I hissed and walked away.I waved a taxi and headed home. That was the least I could do, it was of no use chasing or stalking that idiot. The moment I got home, a sharp bitter laugh escaped my lips. He insulted me with Nolan, Rubby must have told him a lot about me.I had convinced myself that Rubby was nothing more than an obstacle. Every single thing I had worked for, she takes it away f

TRISHA'S POV "Little miss smart." That was the text, but the video was terrifying. My hands shook violently as I pressed the play button. The few seconds I had to wait for the video to load felt like an eternity. Then it finally came through."Shit!" I exclaimed, placing one hand on my head.It was a video of me committing the heinous crime. Doing it with questionable efficiency. My heart pounded violently as I watched myself move through the screen."Oh, I'm fucked!" I exclaimed when I noticed I had not packed my hair properly. My ginger colour hair fell in waves on my back, I had totally forgotten to wear a wig cap. To aggravate the already terrible matter, the Trisha and flower tattoo on the left side of my neck was visible, so visible that even a blind man could feel it.That wasn't enough; someone had also taken a video when I boarded a taxi and even took the risk of following me home.My Jaw dropped when I noticed that the woman who I had thought was Rubby wasn't her.I had be

TRISHA'S POV Betrayal, they say, is a slow poison. It doesn't kill you immediately; rather, it seeps into your veins, your bone marrows, and eats you deep from the inside. That was exactly what I was facing as I kept staring at Nolan with my eyes wide opened. Not even in my wildest dream did I expect such a level of betrayal from him.Who knew that the same man who called me a multi-function sex toy would still be my undoing?I stood frozen, staring at both of them, my eyes darting from Josh to Nolan, to the policemen and forth. My heart hurt. Not the emotional kind, but physically. It felt as though there was a hole that sucked in my blood before it got to my heart; at some point, I felt it pound faster.Suddenly the air in my lungs became hot. I breathed in hot air, that hurt my heart the most.Nolan's arms were crossed, with a satisfied smirk tugging at the corner of the lips. The same man I had loved. The same man, who I thought had loved me. The same man I fought so hard for,

RUBBY'S POV It was painful watching Alex say those hurtful words to his mom. Yet, I understood him. Who keeps such a secret away from their son? And to think that he had gotten a wind of it from the media made it worse. His outburst was justified, and so was his mother's reason. Then I thought, what if it was the same kind of heart break I had encountered? What if the man had slept with her best friend, and she chose not to forgive him?I shook my head as though it would shake off the thought that had suddenly enveloped it.I had seen that man a hundred times. He was always around the premises, even when I still dated Nolan. Now it made more sense to me how I kept bumping into him every time. I was running away from either Alex or that squirrel."What if he is no longer there?" Alex suddenly asked."Then we look elsewhere," I simply replied."What if he still doesn't want me, what if...""Enough of the what-ifs, Alex," I shunned him, rolling my eyes. His shoulders dropped in relief

RUBBY'S POV I laid up, curled in Alex's arm, as he stroked my hair continuously. As I would always say, this was what I wanted and more, for the past three years, I had begged to be loved, to be seen, to be understood, but here it was in abundance, everything I had wished for and more. Nature really had its way of blessing its own; my good had somehow returned to me."Thank you," I whispered. He lifted his brow, obviously wondering why I Suddenly said thank you."Thank you for what?""For everything. For protecting me, for standing with me, for loving me, for making me feel heard and seen, for filling the gap, for...."Before I could finish, he drew me closer and cupped my chin in his hand."Rubby," he murmured. "I should be the one saying all of these things. Thank you for loving me the way I do not deserve, the....""Shush," I whispered. "Don't say that, you deserve everything, the whole of me.""What can I say?" He shifted a strand of stray hair from my face."If I had known, we w

RUBBY'S POV I sat up and curled up on the couch as I kept replaying the video. My life and that of those around me had been quite chaotic for some time. The Trisha I had once called best friend thought of murdering me. I felt hurt, even more than the woman whose wrist she slit, but then, hearing the raw terror in her voice made me feel what I wasn't supposed to feel.I felt so heartbroken seeing her at Nolan's mercy. She deserved better.I should have felt satisfied and pleased. Yes! After everything she did to me, After all the Pains she had caused, all the tears I shed because of her, I should have felt some sense of justice, but instead, all I felt was pity and an unbearable ache in my chest.I pressed my hands to my lips, hoping and trying so hard to process everything. Where had I really gone wrong? I had loved her like the sister I never had."Is it something to think about?" Alexander's deep voice broke the silence.I turned my head and found him standing near the fireplace.

ALEXANDER'S POV "Don't do this, I care about her just the same way you do.""Josh, stop using those words; I've told you times without a number that you are not existent to Rubby. Fuck off!"Josh folded his fist tight, I knew his nails must be digging into his palms. He was fighting the urge to hit me there in the hospital."Please," he muttered, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I deserve to see her too. Alex, you know so well I have something for her; you are hurting me."I laughed bitterly. Enraged that he had the guts to say he felt something for her. Did I say enraged? No, I loathed him and every word that came out of his mouth concerning Rubby."You have something for her?" I mimicked. Where were you then when she was almost deliberately crushed under a moving truck? Huh? Or should I remind you that the first time she came to the hospital was after leaving your house? Guess what, you didn't even show up till she left, why then are you here? To kill her off completely?"Hi

  • Valentine's Vows; Love, Lies And A Fake Engagement    Chapter 155

ALEXANDER'S POV I hadn't changed my clothes in almost forty-eight hours. I had spent another night with Rubby, and by morning my clothes smelled like hospital disinfectant. I had pleaded with Rubby's parents to go home for that night; thankfully, they agreed, and by morning, they were back with clothes, bedspreads and food."You should go too; you need to freshen up and change," Rubby's mom said and held my wrist. Her voice was terribly hoarse now, she must have cried all through the night."I will be back," I muttered, bowed slightly and left. Though not after standing by Rubby's door and whispering a good morning I didn't know if she heard. The doctor had insisted that no one be allowed into the room.Honestly, I needed just a few minutes to change, splash water on my face, and even breathe properly.I parked directly in front of my house, the engine still running. The moment I stepped out, I spotted a figure by the sidewalk."Oh, not again!" I groaned and slapped myself lightly

  • Valentine's Vows; Love, Lies And A Fake Engagement    Chapter 154

JOSH'S POV "Will you stay here?" I asked my mom. The Wolfe's mansion was the last place I ever wanted to stay. The sight of Kevin irritated me, and the sight of Alex's mother annoyed me the more."I will stay. Laura is up to something, and I need to know what it is. Besides, the international summit is in less than a month; I want to be sure I see how everything goes.""Right," I nodded my head and walked out. My phone buzzed in my pocket before I got to the driveway."Nolan?" I whispered."That idiot!" How dare he call me after exposing my secret to Kevin, of all persons?"You've got guts, Nolan," I said immediately I answered."Rubby was run over by a truck. I will send you the address of the hospital. Can we work together?"I didn't hear the last thing he said, the only thing I heard was that Rubby had been run over by a truck"What!" I widened my eyes in horror and turned back into the house, straight to Kevin's room. His door was ajar as usual. When I stormed in, he quickly stoo

  • Valentine's Vows; Love, Lies And A Fake Engagement    Chapter 153

ALEXANDER'S POV Annie knows who is behind this, I thought as I followed the nurse to the waiting area. I stepped in just as Rubby was wheeled into the operating room. Her body was bandaged and broken, quite similar to my heart, only that my heart had no bandages on it. It was broken and bleeding. For a second I felt this was some kind of joke. A cruel joke maybe. It shouldn't be happening, I thought. But it was, and all I could do was watch and hope she would make it out alive.I had never felt so helpless in my entire life. If only it was possible, I would have switched places with her, but I couldn't, I could only watch from a distance before the door to the operating room was shut."Please wait here," a nurse murmured."Rubby," a sob escaped Rubby's mom's lips. "Why is she so still? She's never been like that, even in her sleep; she always tosses and turns like a restless butterfly. But see..." her voice broke as she pointed towards the room Rubby was wheeled into. Her Father wra

ALEXANDER'S POV Not long after Rubby had gone, my phone buzzed. It was her mom."She's home already?" I muttered before taking the call."Rubby," her mother cried. I felt my heartbeat in my throat. "Rubby, what happened to her?"The only words I heard were hospital and accident."Where," I shouted, panic rising in my chest. "Send me the address!"I wasn't interested in hearing the full story. I left everything I was doing and ran out.I drove like a madman when I got the address. Drivers cussed at me when I switched lanes without prior notice, but I didn't care; all I had in mind was her. When I arrived, the familiar sterile scent of the hospital reminded me there was trouble. It was a scent I never wanted to associate with her, yet she had landed here against my thoughts and wishes for her."Ward 123," the nurse said softly after I had asked her about Rubby without a description. She had seen the panic written all over my face and knew it had to do with the newest almost-dead pati

RUBBY'S POV "I'm ready to leave," I said while drawing imaginary images on the floor.I couldn't bring myself to look at his face, or else I might be tempted to stay."Already? I just got home.""I know, but I didn't plan on spending the night in the first place, mom might be worried now."Alex tucked his hands into his pockets, with a look of reluctance that carved deep into his expression."But your mom knows you are here; I mean, you told her, didn't you?"I shook my head. "You seem to have forgotten how I ended up in your house for the night," a wave of embarrassment washed over me as I remembered the events of the previous night."Rubby," Alex called out softly again. He just knew how to do it, how to make me change my mind even when I didn't want to. I shook my head, forcing a smile I didn't feel. "Alex please stop. Don't ask again, if I'm forced to stay, I won't be happy."He took a step closer, begging with his eyes more than his words. His lips looked redder than it was las

  • Valentine's Vows; Love, Lies And A Fake Engagement    Chapter 150

ALEXANDER'S POV I pulled into the driveway, letting the car engine idle for a few seconds before I stepped out. The house was quiet; I had expected all hell to be let loose since Annie was in the same house with Rubby. The lights were on, which was quite funny because there was no eclipse of the sun or the moon. But it wasn't even the lights that caught my attention, it was Annie. She was seated on the edge of the front steps like her world had come crumbling down. She Looked lost, bitter and even tired. Her shoulders were hunched, while her arms wrapped tightly around her body like a discarded soul waiting to be picked up.I stood still for some minutes watching her. She was so lost in thought that she didn't know that someone was standing there. She swiped her hand across her cheek, not once or twice, but three times. She was crying. She sniffed softly, her back rising and falling faster than it should. She looked behind her again, maybe to be sure Rubby wasn't coming, then swiped

ALEXANDER'S POV "Dad, I didn't wake up dry; I woke up normal," I answered and plastered a fake smile on my face.Dad smiled. "You are a grown boy now."One second, he was smiling, and the next minute, his eyes darkened."BANG!" He slammed his fist against the table so hard that the tea cup beside him rattled and toppled."You thieves!" He suddenly shouted, rage evident in his tone. "You snakes! Backstabbers! You want to take everything from me huh? Sign the documents already, sign them now!"The outburst sent shivers down my spine. I looked at Kevin who had a satisfied grin on his face. He must have found out that anger triggers this outburst and leveraged it to get himself entertained.Josh's mother sat still. Not even once did she blink like she had also waited for that outburst. My mother, on the other hand, looked somewhat confused, yet sat on her seat.Seeing that nobody made any attempt to move, I stood immediately and moved forward."Dad," I muttered. "It's okay. You are safe

  • Valentine's Vows; Love, Lies And A Fake Engagement    Chapter 148

ALEXANDER'S POV I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. Dad sat at the end of the table, Josh sat with his mother directly opposite me, and Kevin sat two chairs away from me, and my mother was missing still. The room was so quiet, too quiet for a meeting filled with power-hungry men and women.I adjusted my tie for the fourth time, feigning a calmness I didn't feel.My eyes moved to Josh who sat stiff as though he was holding his breath. He hasn't spoken to his mother since I came, and neither has Kevin."Where is your mother?" Dad asked.I shrugged my shoulders, "I have no idea." In his sober state, he was mean to me, in fact, mean to everyone."You have no idea?" He repeated.I nodded and said no extra word."Can't we start without her? Does she hold such an important position in the family that we have to wait for her first?" Kevin suddenly asked.I kissed my teeth, I had no response to his question, and even if I did, Mom was the least person to defend."Kevin, you seem pressured,
