RUBBY'S POV
The crunch of snow underneath my boots seemed louder than anything as I ran after Alexander outside the restaurant and the sight froze me mid-step: Nolan, his face bloodied, was on the snow while Alexander’s guards completely surrounded him. Their fists were landing punches, their boots kicking into him over and over.
From the moment Alexander left the lounge, I knew he was going to turn into a raging wreck but the sight before me felt way too real.
“Stop!” I screamed, my voice cutting through the cold air as I snapped out of my daze.
The guards paused, their eyes flicking toward Alexander, who stood a few feet away, unmoved. He didn’t speak, only raised a questioning brow at me.
“Alexander, this has gone too far,” I said, stepping forward, my breath visible in the icy air. “Call them off.”
His blue eyes pierced through me. “He deserves it. This bastard made your face hurt. He deserves this and death.”
“I don’t care what he deserves!” I snapped, my voice trembling with desperation. I didn't want anyone to die, not on me and why did he care so much? “I’m asking you to stop. Please.”
For a long moment, he stared at me, his jaw tightening.
“He hit you.”
“And your men have given him ten times that just let him go please,” I pleaded. I was getting terrified of all the drama. I wanted it to end already.
Then, with a reluctant sigh, he lifted his hand. “Let him go.”
The guards stepped back, but Alexander wasn’t finished. He strode forward, crouching down to grab Nolan by the collar, his voice low and menacing. “This is your only warning. If you so much as breathe the same air with her again, I’ll make sure you regret it. Understand?”
Nolan, bloodied and shaking, nodded weakly.
“Good,” Alexander said, releasing him with a shove. “Now crawl back to whatever hole you came from.”
I watched as Nolan stumbled to his feet and staggered off into the snow filled night. My chest ached with a mix of anger and pity, but I shoved it down, focusing on the man who now stood beside me.
“You didn’t have to be so harsh,” I muttered, glancing up at Alexander.
“He deserved worse,” he replied coldly. Then, his tone softened slightly as he looked at me. “Are you okay?”
I nodded, but my voice betrayed me. “I don’t know… This isn’t how I wanted things to go. I wanted him to suffer a bit and–”
He sighed, slipping his arm around my shoulders. “Come on. Let’s get back inside and he deserves more than this but since you asked.”
The warmth of the restaurant was almost euphoric. Possibly because outside was freezing cold. My friends were staring, their expressions a mix of confusion and amazement. They hadn't seen me with someone like Alexander. Like, never. Becca however, eyed him suspiciously through her wine glass.
They were still angry about what happened with Nolan but they were also curious about Alexander.
“Rubby,” Cynthia started, her voice cautious. “What just happened? Was that the Nolan guy you wouldn't shut up about? What on earth gave him the audacity to hit you? Were you in an abusive relationship? Do you want me calling the guards?”
“I can have him dead by tomorrow morning.” Becca said quietly with her phone in hand.
I hesitated, but Alexander stepped in, his voice calm as usual with that silky feel. “You don't have to worry about that. It’s handled now.”
Becca, ever the blunt one, smirked. “Well, this Alexander guy definitely knows how to make an entrance but I don't trust you one tiny bit and I want to see that motherfuckers guts all over the fucking floor like the bastard he is.”
I couldn’t help but smile faintly. If this didn't die down, Becca would do what she wanted and I didn't want anyone dead. “Everyone, this is Alexander. Alex, these are my friends, Becca and Cynthia.”
“Nice to meet you,” he took their hands and immediately released them as if he couldn't stand the contact any longer.
Thankfully they were too smitten by his looks to notice.
“I must say, you caught a really gorgeous one. I could have sworn I've seen him in the magazines a couple of times,” Becca said.
“Maybe you have,” I winked at them and they cooed.
“No freaking way! How did you two meet? I'm dying for all the tea!” Cynthia squealed and I chuckled. Alexander took out his phone, completely detaching himself from our girl's talk, only dropping a simple one-sentence answer to every question thrown his way.
The night was soon over and he had a guard drop off me and the girls.
The next day, I headed to the airport to pick up my parents. My heart raced as I spotted my parents emerging from the crowd and I immediately ran towards them with child-like excitement. It had been forever!
“Rubby!” Mom exclaimed, pulling me into a warm hug. God, I've missed this!
Dad followed, his grin wide. “There’s our girl.”
I clung to them, the familiar scent of home bringing tears to my eyes. “I’ve missed you both so much.”
As we walked toward the car, Mom asked, “So, how’s Nolan? We thought he’d be here to pick us up with you.”
My stomach twisted. I hadn't thought about them asking me about him. They knew him all too well, even better than I knew him, and they spoke to him on a regular basis. I wasn't sure how they were going to take the news of our breakup, but I hoped it would be something they could easily move on from.
Even though I, myself, wasn't totally over it.
“It’s… complicated,” I said, forcing a smile. “I’ll explain everything when we get home.”
Thankfully, they didn't push and just accepted the words the way I told them. It made things a lot easier for me.
The drive home was lively as we chatted about their vacation in Maldives and how we were going to spend New Year.
“Are we still getting a wedding on New Year's Eve?” My mother asked and I almost choked on nothing. Fuck, why did she have to bring that up?
“Darling, she's driving. Allow the girl to concentrate! We can talk about all this at home!” My father quickly came to my rescue.
“Listen to your husband, mama,” I said, ignoring the dread forming a pit in my stomach.
I had totally forgotten all about the marriage. It wasn't even included in the deal I made with Alexander.
“But I want to know,’’ she pouted.
“He's coming over for dinner. You can drill him all you want then,” I told her and the rest of the drive was pleasantly chatty.
Later that evening, my mother and I prepared dinner. The table was set, and the house was filled with the rich aroma of roasted chicken and garlic. My parents exchanged curious glances as I poured wine for them.
“So,” Dad began, leaning back in his chair. “This man you want us to meet…what’s he like?”
It was almost funny that they were asking about Nolan when they practically knew everything about him. I couldn't wait to surprise them with Alexander.
A part of me was scared of their reaction but it was worth looking forward to.
I smiled nervously. “You’ll meet him soon. He’s… special.”
“Now that's what I like to hear,” my mother grinned.
“As long as he treats you right, I am okay with it,” my father shrugged. “When exactly does he arrive?”
“Soon,” I answered.
But as the minutes ticked by, my anxiety grew. I checked my phone for the fifth time, my heart sinking when there were no messages.
I dropped a few texts for him but there was no reply to any of them. A frown played on my lips. We discussed this last night and I told him my parents were big on first impressions.
Finally, I called him. The line rang endlessly before he picked up.
“Rubby,” Alexander’s voice was curt. “I’m in a meeting.”
“A meeting?” I echoed, my voice rising. “Alexander, you promised you would be here for dinner. My parents are waiting to meet you!”
The pause that followed told me I was about to like what he was going to say.
As if on cue, he asked, “What dinner?”
I couldn't believe my ears. Was he being serious right now?
“Is this a joke?” My stomach dropped. “The dinner, Alexander. We planned this!”
I hated that my voice was rising but I couldn't help it. He was raising my blood pressure.
His sigh crackled through the phone. “I’ll call you back.”
Huh?
The line went dead, leaving me holding the phone, my heart pounding. I tried calling him again but he wouldn't answer. I didn't know whether to feel angry or disappointed.
My parents exchanged worried glances.
“Is everything okay?” Mom asked gently. I could tell she already had a clue of what was going on.
I forced a smile, though my chest felt tight. “Yeah, he’s just running late.”
Dinner was silent, and I had completely lost my appetite, but I forced myself to eat so my parents wouldn't worry.
First meeting with the parents and he stood me up. So much for first impressions! Now the bastard was going to make me explain what I didn't want to. And to think I thought he was being sweet and nice to me.
ALEXANDER'S POV The soft hum of the elevator was the only sound as I ascended to the penthouse, my thoughts were jumbled. The events of the evening replayed in my head: Rubby’s voice filled with desperation as she pleaded with me to spare the bastard who laid his hands on her. I didn't understand why I reacted that way. I wouldn't touch filth who laid his hands on a womanMy initial plan was to return the slap and warn him off her but when I saw his face, I just had a sudden change of heart. I wanted to see him beg. Still, I reminded myself of the plan. She was a means to an end. Nothing more. I just needed to keep myself from getting too involved with her. Besides, this happened yesterday, why was I still thinking about it?The doors opened, revealing the spacious living room glowing in city lights. Mirabelle was waiting, her pacing like a caged tiger betraying her mood. Her silk robe fluttered as she turned, her sharp gaze pinning me in place.“Alexander,” she snapped, her voice l
RUBBY'S POV My lower lips quivered as I forced myself to eat, I was just so unlucky, and to think that he was such a lovely person.Across the table, my mom seemed triumphant, almost happy that he had disappointed me; she liked Nolan, which explains it; she didn't want another man for me.Dad,, on the other hand, was his wife's husband, he did everything she said and accepted anything that came out of her mouth, it left me wishing for a man like my dad, who would never argue with me, though I envied their partnership, It left me wondering if dad had a mind of his own."Eat up, sweetheart; I'm sure Nolan would never do such a thing," Mom said as usual; she always finds a way to fix Nolan in every sentence.I rolled my eyes in response and made to stand when Dad suddenly stood up as though he had an important announcement to make. He picked up the hat he had kept on the table and wore it back; Mom burst out laughing immediately; it was obvious she knew what he was about to do; she was
ALEXANDER'S POVMy chest rose and fell as I heaved a sigh of relief, though a pang of guilt remained, I had deeply hurt her.I waited for Mirabelle to leave, though, before calling, I couldn't risk causing a scene. Just as my parents thought, Mirabelle had a knack for theatrics; they thought she was crazy, and to be honest, they weren't wrong.I had just finished preparing for the office when I got another notification that Mirabelle had used my card again.I clenched my teeth in anger and yelled in frustration. Was there a limit to this reckless spending of hers? And here I was about to add another woman to the cart. "Don't use my card again," I warned when she took my call."But baby I needed that.""Mirabelle, do not use my card again; if you continue this way, I might go bankrupt before the end of the year.""Okay, fine, I will just get a Birkin bag, and that will be it for the day.""Mirabelle, you have more than ten birkin bags; what do you need another one for?""Oh baby, stop
RUBBY'S POVThe drive home from the orphanage left me in quiet contemplation. For the first time in a long while, I felt fulfilled and complete. It wasn’t just the children’s laughter nor the way they clung to me as if I mattered; it was the fact that Alex had laughed, too. Really laughed. Now, he sat beside me, his face serious as his fingers darted across his phone screen. Probably answering an important email. He always had that same focused expression brows furrowed, lips slightly pursed. It made me smile.I stole glances at him, hoping he wouldn’t notice the blush warming my cheeks. He was handsome. He had a perfect pair of black eyes that could stare into your soul, a well-chiselled jaw, tiny pink lips, and a broad chest that could carry his kids and me. I laughed softly at my weird imagination, we weren't even dating, and here I was thinking about carrying his kids."What's amusing you?" He asked SuddenlyI quickly turned to face the window to prevent him from seeing how pink
ALEXANDER'S POV I stared at Rubby as she made to talk, ready to chip in something if the need arose. But before she could form a single word, Nolan quickly cut her short."Mom, Dad," he began, sounding hurt. "Don't be upset with Rubby; I think she's only been confused lately; the whole wedding plans are so overwhelming; it's my fault for putting so much pressure on her."I widened my eyes in shock, and so did Rubby."Nolan, you are pathetic....""I mean," he interrupted her again, his voice suddenly breaking as though he was about to cry."I understand how she is feeling. I haven't been around much lately because of work, and now someone else is gradually taking my place," he made the last sentence and pointed at me, much to my frustration.I stiffened in my chair as I fought hard to suppress the feeling of rage that kept rising in my chest. What a manipulative Narcissist!"I don't understand you, son," Mom asked, walking over to where he sat.Nolan shook his head as though reluctan
ALEXANDER'S POV She hurt my ego. The number of times her words replayed in my mind was unhealthy. "There are millions of men out there ready to fund my lifestyle."I should have been angry, but instead, I felt calm and hollow. She had struck me where it hurt the most and no matter how much I forced myself to believe she was wrong, a part of me wondered if she was right. She came back to the living room minutes later and made to walk past me, but I held her back. For a second I clenched my teeth and debated within me whether to let her go or not. The latter won, and I wrapped my arms around her small waist, raising her chin to get her face closer to mine."I'm sorry, Mirabelle, I overreacted; it's been a stressful day," I said quietly. Her lips curved into a small self-satisfied smile as though she had won a gold medal. "It's okay," she said brushing a kiss on my lips. Her expression suddenly changed when she picked up her phone, tapping against the screen as a notification lit it
ALEXANDER'S POV Immediately Kevin's call ended, my phone rang again. For a split second, I thought it was Kevin about to spit more venom, but when Rubby's name lit up the screen, I couldn't help the small smile that tugged at my lips."Hey Rubby," I answered, leaning back into the couch."How are you doing? I just thought of calling you now.""I'm so sorry Alex," she started, her voice soft and tentative. "I had no idea that Nolan was going to show up, I didn't...""It's okay, dear," I interrupted gently; the frustration in her tone was quite evident. "Honestly, I'm not mad; I understand stuff like this happens; my parents could be worse at times, so it's fine, okay.""For real? You are not mad?" She asked sounding a little surprised."No, not at all," I replied with a chuckle. For a second there was a pause on the line, and I heard her exhale gently as though she were relieved."I still feel bad about it, though; they even offered him the meal you prepared.""Rubby common, I alread
RUBBY'S POV Alex drove me home hours later promising to pick me back up for dinner. I waved at him till I could no longer see his car; for some reason, I couldn't help feeling like a giddy little child. As I got to my room, I caught a glimpse of myself in my mirror and couldn't help but giggle, I was grinning from ear to ear. To make it worse, I felt as though I was floating on air as I remembered how hard we laughed and how gently he rubbed my arms.Suddenly I found myself smiling again, my face aching from the effort.Get a grip on yourself, Rubby, I muttered to myself before sinking in on my ever-ready bed.Evening came sooner than I had expected, and I heard the honk of his car; he no longer pulled into the driveway to avoid being embarrassed by my mom. I rushed downstairs, ignoring my mom's voice, who was asking where I was headed dressed like that."You look stunning," he complimented when I stepped out of my apartment. I had carefully chosen a dark green dress that hugged my
KEVIN'S POV My knuckles turned white as I drove violently home. I had never been this embarrassed and disgraced all my life. How dare he? How dare that old man who is suffering from Dementia?I slammed my fists on the steering wheel continuously as I drove. "Mom," I muttered. How does it feel to have a favourite child, huh?All of a sudden she shows up, and the chairman talks such nonsense."Mr Wolfe!" I shouted as soon as I entered the house I bumped into Alex's mom who sat totally unbothered by the whole situation."Oh, it's a pity; some people can't even relate to what a mother's love means," she muttered.I knew she was referring to me. Though it hurt, I couldn't show how deeply those words wounded me.I turned to leave, but she blurted another disgusting word."I would rather be a devil than choose which child to love."I stopped abruptly and turned to her. "If you are talking to me, come say to my face, you coward. You should be ashamed of how much your son hates you. Look,
RUBBY'S POV Alex ignored my question and went ahead to open the box I had gotten him."Drop the act. Have you been drinking?""Wow," he gasped when he opened the box. I had gotten him a not-so-expensive watch. He had only one. Though that was the least of his worries, I figured out he needed another one. I had carefully chosen that watch with Dad the first time we made love. "Rubby, this is so expensive, you shouldn't have.....""I would have done more, I just......""Rubby this is too much," he interrupted. "Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much."I smiled. "I figured you had only one, so..." I couldn't complete the sentence; my cheeks had heated up.His eyes lingered on mine, making my cheeks heat up even more."You look stunning today, I.....""Alex, have you been drinking?" I asked again. I had almost forgotten and allowed myself to be brainwashed by his seductive eyes."Help me put it on," he muttered and gently removed the watch from the box."Whenever you are done dodging the qu
ALEXANDER'S POV My Jaw dropped, and my whole body stiffened as they walked to the podium. I turned to look at Josh who even looked more confused than I was. So was Kevin. It was game over. Mr Wolfe had always thought I wasn't his son, he had always seen me as a bedwetter, so I stood no chance against his sons. For me I thought, the battle was over for me, and for Josh too. "Good morning everyone," he greeted. We all stood in respect before he signalled us to sit with his fingers.I stole another look at Josh, who seemed to be speaking with his mother with his eyes; he didn't understand why she was there, though I knew it was against Kevin."I am sorry for keeping you all waiting, I had to settle some issues at home before stepping out." Turning to Kevin, "Congratulations, son, I heard the board members voted in your favour."Kevin nodded in response, a wide smile spreading across his face."Good. Standing before you all here this morning, I reject Kevin as the CEO of my hard-earne
ALEXANDER'S POV "Alex, Alex," the secretary called after me."What is it?" I turned sharply. "I know all this is Kevin's plan, but asking for the transfer of ownership is far. What if it's really signed in his name?""Why do you care?" I asked."Because Kevin can go any length to make sure he sits there. It's only for your own good if you allow him to sit there for the time being while you work underground to be sure the ownership is transferred to you.""Do you think I care?" I asked again."But.....""You have no right whatsoever to speak to me. If you believe I'm innocent, it would have shown in the vote charts, but it didn't.""I.....""We are done conversing," I said, but then someone else called me."Alexander." I turned to see Kevin walking towards me, while Josh followed suit."Why are you running with your tails between your legs?"I smirked. "You are the dog here. Because if you aren't, you wouldn't be so scared of meeting your father and asking him to sign the transfer of
ALEXANDER'S POV It was the second time in the month that I woke up with such head splitting headache.I held my temples with both hands as I stood up to clear the mess I had created the previous day."What happened?" I muttered and paused to enable me to recall what had happened the previous day."Oh," I exclaimed in realisation. The stunt Kevin had pulled, and the heartbreaking words Rubby had said to me.But my brain kept reminding me that I was forgetting something."What else?" I grumbled.I shrugged my shoulders when I couldn't remember, and continued cleaning the mess I had made.Midway into my cleaning services, my phone buzzed.I stared at it for a moment trying to recollect when and how I had seen that number, because it looked oddly familiar, till the call ended. Not even up to twenty seconds, it started ringing again, I was pushed to answer the call this time."Have you forgotten the board has a meeting today?" That was Kevin's voice, but that wasn't his number."Are you s
ALEXANDER'S POV I waited for Rubby, I couldn't leave, not after what she had said."You are still here?" Rubby asked when she got back from the doctor's office.I nodded without saying anything."Just leave me alone already. Staying with you has caused more chaos than I thought possible. Just go, please.""Rubby it's not me. I'm not the one bringing the chaos, it's.....""Alex, my life has been peaceful till you came in; go already; I miss myself."My eyes clouded. "That's a mean thing to say.""I will be leaving already, the doctor said I was free to go. And please do not come after me if you really love me. Grant me this one request."I sat like a statue and watched her pick her things till she walked away. Suddenly, my heart felt so heavy and cold, as though a bag of frozen water had been kept in it.Moments later, I found my legs. "Fine, if that's what she wants," I muttered and headed for my car.I tightened my grip on the steering wheel as I drove; Rubby's words kept ringing in
KEVIN'S POVI sang along, "It's a beautiful day, we gonna have some fun today, oh baby, I think I want to marry you.""What a beautiful day," I exclaimed and even increased the volume of the music. Everything had gone as smoothly as planned, even extra. Now, just one step, and Wolfe's incorporation becomes mine.I pulled into the driveway and adjusted my collar; I needed to exude that air of superiority, the CEO kind of Aura.I had just walked into the living room when Alex's mom stepped out."Kevin, what's going on?""Oh, Laura. You must have seen the news." I flashed her the darkest smile I had."That's not the plan; you are acting out of script, Kevin; what exactly are you doing?" Her hands trembled slightly as she spoke.I did a little break dance, much to her irritation."Old woman, we struck a deal, and we both played our part; why, then, are you pained? Do I look so foolish to you? Do you think I suddenly had no interest in the seat? You must be a clown, just like your son.
ALEXANDER'S POV I folded my fist and glared at the snake in front of me. I should have known from the onset."You also need to come with us," a police officer said.I turned immediately. "Why? Because of the lie he's been vomiting?""No sir, we need you to come for questioning, this is area division two.""Go ahead, you will need to see Rubby when she wakes up," Kevin said, tapped me on the shoulders and walked away, with the reporters running along. He stopped at the car carrying Josh. "Hey brother."Josh spat on him, but Kevin laughed in response."I will come with my car," I said to the police officer, who agreed.I was assigned to two other officers who joined me in the car, and soon I found myself in the Division Two police station."We would make use of a lie detector sir, since Kevin presented no evidence.""It's fine," I whispered. I felt so defeated."Is Mr Henry your driver?""Yes he is," I replied curtly."Did you know he had such intentions?""No, I didn't.""Where were
ALEXANDER'S POV "That's the car there," Josh pointed."But why is the fire service coming this direction" I was still talking when people started running out screaming."Fire! Fire!" The basement."We were both lost; the car was packed beside the bakery, but the bakery was busy, as many workers walked in and out of the room."There is no way she would be there," Josh said aloud as though reading my thoughts."Out!" Someone shouted. "There are people in the basement.""Basement?" I and Josh said in unison. "The gym has a basement?"Thankfully, the fire service arrived just in time and began doing what they knew how to do best."We are wasting time; take this direction, and I will take the other; we need to find her now," Josh ordered.I hated the fact that he was dishing out instructions like I was his younger brother, I only ignored him for Rubby's sake."What!" I exclaimed when I saw a swarm of reporters coming in that direction."Oh shit," Josh exclaimed. None of us wanted to be se
