ALEXANDER'S POV

It was embarrassing to say that I had stalked her all day.

From the moment she came to the office till that night at the club, thankfully my presence had saved her from danger.

I couldn't take away my eyes from her face as I carried her to my car, even as I lay her down on her bed, I just stared at how peaceful she looked.

The next morning, as I remembered all that had happened, I kept telling myself that I just cared about her wellbeing and nothing more; I would have helped any other girl in that condition.

I exhaled deeply and went downstairs to the sitting room.

The city lights stretched beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse, but they did nothing to distract me. My eyes flickered to my phone for what felt like the hundredth time, hoping, no, praying for a call or a text from Rubby.

Nothing.

I exhaled slowly, rubbing a hand over my jaw. She was still angry. I couldn’t blame her. After everything Mirabelle called her, after lying to her. What reason di

ALEXANDER'S POV I folded my arms and stared at Mirabelle, my face devoid of emotion, but inside, a storm brewed. She stood in the middle of my penthouse, arms crossed too, her expression carefully composed, but I could see the nervousness creeping in. She wasn’t expecting this.I leaned against the bar, my gaze never leaving hers. “Where were you last night? Please answer my question I'm sure you heard me.”She blinked, feigning confusion. “What do you mean?”“Don’t play dumb, Mirabelle.” My voice was cold and precise. “Where were you?”She let out a light laugh, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “I was at home. Why are you suddenly questioning me?”I didn’t react, didn’t give her the satisfaction of a response. Instead, I let the silence stretch between us.Her hands trembled slightly. “Alex, what is this about?”"It's about what I asked you, where were you? And before you think of lying, don't forget that I was still at home before you left. I sat in my car and watched your car p

RUBBY'S POV "Thank God you are here," the Matron exclaimed."What's happening?" I askedShe shrugged her shoulders and led me to the doctor's office. The hospital walls seemed colder than usual, their sterile white tones made my skin prickle. The air smelled like antiseptic and anxiety, thick and suffocating. I sat beside the little boy’s bed, watching his tiny chest rise and fall with difficulty. His breathing was shallow, his body too frail for someone so young. The sight of him, helpless and in pain, brought tears to my eyes. It broke my heart. The doctor’s voice earlier still echoed in my head.“He needs immediate surgery, but we can’t proceed unless his parents sign.”The matron and I had pleaded with them. We explained, over and over again, that he was an orphan and that there were no parents to sign for him. But the hospital stood firm. A couple must sign."We can't take such risk here, a couple must sign an undertaking," the doctor explained."He is from the orphanage downto

RUBBY'S POV "Sure," Alex nodded and together we walked to the doctor's office.Sitting in the doctor’s office beside Alex felt surreal. Everything that had happened in the past few hours, signing as guardians, waiting anxiously for the surgery to end, and embracing Alex in relief, had left my emotions tangled and twisted. I focused on the doctor’s words, forcing myself to ignore how attracted I was to the man seated next to me.“The next few days are crucial,” the doctor said, scanning the papers on his desk. “As his guardians, you’ll need to make sure he follows strict dietary rules. No heavy foods, nothing too oily, and he must stay hydrated. And don't forget, hydrated means just water, no juice at least not yet.”I nodded, gripping the edge of my chair to steady myself, Suddenly feeling like a grandma.Alex, sitting next to me, asked in a deep voice, “Is there anything else we need to be aware of? Any signs of complications we should watch out for?”The doctor gave him an approvin

RUBBY'S POV "You still want me to leave?" Mirabelle asked. "I've got other things I think you should listen to." That was when I stood up, I didn't want to hear any other thing. The walls of the hospital seemed to close in around me, the weight of Mirabelle’s words and Alex’s silence laid heavy on me. My hands trembled at my sides, my heart pounding so loudly I could barely hear anything else. “Rubby, please… just let me explain," Alex said. He really did have the guts to explain what was so clear and visible."Explain? Explain what?" I asked, pushing my chair slightly behind me.What did he want to explain? That he had been using me? That everything had been nothing more than a game to him, that I'm dirt? Tears welled up in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. Not here. Not now, I couldn't afford to let them see me cry.Mirabelle was still thrashing in the grip of the hospital security, screaming obscenities at Alex, and at me, but that was not my concern. I had gotten the a

ALEXANDER'S POV "Get her out of here!" I screamed at the security men."Listen to me, Mirabelle. The next time you meddle in my affairs, I will have you arrested, I promise," I warned and stormed out."Argh!" I screamed slamming my fist on my steering. My jaw clenched, my teeth grinding against each other as frustration burned through my veins.Rubby had walked away, and this time, I knew it was impossible to bring her back. The one woman who had somehow gotten past my walls, the one woman I never wanted to hurt, yet, I had. And it was all because of Mirabelle and that bastard Kevin. If only he didn't take that picture, this wouldn't have escalated like this.I swore under my breath and slammed my foot on the gas, the engine roaring as I sped down the streets. I needed to know why Kevin had done this. Why had he felt the need to destroy something, I had barely even gotten the chance to hold?I arrived at my parents’ house within minutes, my blood boiling. Without bothering to knock,

ALEXANDER'S POV I swallowed hard and moved away from him, clenching my fist by my sides. The tension in the room was suffocating. My mother stood between Kevin and me, her sharp eyes darting between us. “Enough,” she said sternly, her voice slicing through the thick atmosphere like a blade. “This childish bickering stops right now. You both need to man up; this is getting too much. Would you ever love yourselves?”Kevin scoffed, rubbing his jaw from where I had punched him earlier. “Childish bickering? Are you seriously taking his side? Well, I'm not surprised; he's always been the favourite child.”My father, who had been silent for most of our argument, finally spoke up. “This isn’t about sides, Kevin. This is about responsibility. And you’ve proven time and again that you’re not ready to handle the weight of this company. There are other small companies under your guidance, yet you've not done anything there not to talk of this one.”Kevin’s face turned red. “Excuse me?”My father

RUBBY'S POV Rubby you are beautiful, I exclaimed when I had finally gotten my hair done. "Here you go ma'am, beautiful," my stylist exclaimed."Thank you."The driver had waited. He agreed too and didn't even ask for extra charges.I had changed to a fitted white blazer that hugged my curves, paired with sleek black trousers that elongated my frame. My hair was styled in soft waves, and the light makeup I wore accentuated my features just enough to exude confidence. I looked different. I think classy was a better way to define it."That's what I'm talking about!" the driver whistled as he opened the car door for me. "You look absolutely stunning. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were stepping onto a runway."I laughed softly, shaking my head. "Thank you, sir; I'm Rubby, by the way," I said, extending my hand for a handshake. "Greg," he said and took my hands. The moment I stepped into my parents' home, I heaved a sigh of relief. This was home. The scent of my mother’s cooking

RUBBY'S POV I froze. My heart slammed against my ribs. That voice belonged to the man I thought I had left behind.I slowly turned around and my breath caught in my throat. Alexander Wolfe stood before me looking as effortlessly handsome as ever. His dark suit fit him perfectly, his sharp jawline more defined under the dim restaurant lights. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to find my voice."How did you find me?""Happy New Year in advance, Rubby," he answered in response."You weren't responding to your texts and you weren't taking your calls either, so I figured it was better to come in person."I blinked, caught off guard by his response. He had travelled all that way just to wish me a happy new year? Before I could press further, I noticed my mother watching us from a few feet away. Her lips curled into a soft smile before she turned and walked away, giving us privacy. I then glanced at the woman I had spoken to earlier, she grinned and gave me a thumbs-up before slipping ba

RUBBY'S POV "I honestly do not know," Alex replied rubbing his temples."It's been years now, yet I've not been able to prove that I am innocent. That is why, I am so scared whenever you are around him."I reached out for his hand. "You don't have to be. I know what I want.""Thank you," he muttered and blinked continuously."It's okay. You should learn to cry in my presence."He nodded, biting his teeth hard, and still forcing back the tears."How is your Dad? I should come to see him soon."I curled up against him. "Yeah, Dad is fine. He would be happy to see you. I've been lying to them that everything is fine. Act like it whenever you see them okay?""Okay, understood." We lay in that position for a very long time. He stroked my hair gently, till I felt sleepy again."I will go to my family house tomorrow; I need Dad's saliva. I want to check by myself if Mom is saying the truth now."I raised my face. "Are you sure about that?"He nodded."I think since you doubt Annie, you sho

RUBBY'S POV I knew I should have walked away; I should have picked up my pride and left while I still had a sense of control, but how could I with the way he looked at me, like he had been waiting for me the whole time to be able to break down? Still, I could have asked him to stop after the first kiss, but the way he touched me shattered every wall I had built around my heart. He was so fragile, as though I had his heart in my hands, what would you have had me do?"Alex...." I whispered breathlessly. His hands glided to my waist but began trembling when he held me. It was like he was scared that I might disappear or get mad if he held me tightly. But that was the exact reason I had brought that gift in person. I was needy, desperate to be held by him, desperate to be handled right. He kissed me like he was starving, like he had been dying of thirst and I was the only drop of water left in the desert. "Easy," I muttered when I meant the opposite. I wanted so much for the whole dra

KEVIN'S POV I hissed and stormed away through the hallway with my fists clenched so tight that my nails dug into my palms. They both followed me till we were far away from the study and then Josh ran forward and blocked my path."Why would you say such things to him," Josh shot at me."Do you care?" I fired back. "How did you even find your way back into this house?""It's my father's house still," Josh answered."No, I wasn't talking to you," I turned to face his mom, whose face held no expression. "I was talking to you, how did you find your way back here? You must have leveraged his Dementia to sneak your way in.""I won't sit here and watch you talk to Mom like that," Josh fumed."I think the right phrase is "your mom," not the way you said it."My mom flinched at the statement I made but didn't move from the spot still; she folded her arms and stared at me as though she regretted my very existence."You want the seat so desperately that you openly let him know you plan on killin

KEVIN'S POV My knuckles turned white as I drove violently home. I had never been this embarrassed and disgraced all my life. How dare he? How dare that old man who is suffering from Dementia?I slammed my fists on the steering wheel continuously as I drove. "Mom," I muttered. How does it feel to have a favourite child, huh?All of a sudden she shows up, and the chairman talks such nonsense."Mr Wolfe!" I shouted as soon as I entered the house I bumped into Alex's mom who sat totally unbothered by the whole situation."Oh, it's a pity; some people can't even relate to what a mother's love means," she muttered.I knew she was referring to me. Though it hurt, I couldn't show how deeply those words wounded me.I turned to leave, but she blurted another disgusting word."I would rather be a devil than choose which child to love."I stopped abruptly and turned to her. "If you are talking to me, come say to my face, you coward. You should be ashamed of how much your son hates you. Look,

RUBBY'S POV Alex ignored my question and went ahead to open the box I had gotten him."Drop the act. Have you been drinking?""Wow," he gasped when he opened the box. I had gotten him a not-so-expensive watch. He had only one. Though that was the least of his worries, I figured out he needed another one. I had carefully chosen that watch with Dad the first time we made love. "Rubby, this is so expensive, you shouldn't have.....""I would have done more, I just......""Rubby this is too much," he interrupted. "Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much."I smiled. "I figured you had only one, so..." I couldn't complete the sentence; my cheeks had heated up.His eyes lingered on mine, making my cheeks heat up even more."You look stunning today, I.....""Alex, have you been drinking?" I asked again. I had almost forgotten and allowed myself to be brainwashed by his seductive eyes."Help me put it on," he muttered and gently removed the watch from the box."Whenever you are done dodging the qu

ALEXANDER'S POV My Jaw dropped, and my whole body stiffened as they walked to the podium. I turned to look at Josh who even looked more confused than I was. So was Kevin. It was game over. Mr Wolfe had always thought I wasn't his son, he had always seen me as a bedwetter, so I stood no chance against his sons. For me I thought, the battle was over for me, and for Josh too. "Good morning everyone," he greeted. We all stood in respect before he signalled us to sit with his fingers.I stole another look at Josh, who seemed to be speaking with his mother with his eyes; he didn't understand why she was there, though I knew it was against Kevin."I am sorry for keeping you all waiting, I had to settle some issues at home before stepping out." Turning to Kevin, "Congratulations, son, I heard the board members voted in your favour."Kevin nodded in response, a wide smile spreading across his face."Good. Standing before you all here this morning, I reject Kevin as the CEO of my hard-earne

ALEXANDER'S POV "Alex, Alex," the secretary called after me."What is it?" I turned sharply. "I know all this is Kevin's plan, but asking for the transfer of ownership is far. What if it's really signed in his name?""Why do you care?" I asked."Because Kevin can go any length to make sure he sits there. It's only for your own good if you allow him to sit there for the time being while you work underground to be sure the ownership is transferred to you.""Do you think I care?" I asked again."But.....""You have no right whatsoever to speak to me. If you believe I'm innocent, it would have shown in the vote charts, but it didn't.""I.....""We are done conversing," I said, but then someone else called me."Alexander." I turned to see Kevin walking towards me, while Josh followed suit."Why are you running with your tails between your legs?"I smirked. "You are the dog here. Because if you aren't, you wouldn't be so scared of meeting your father and asking him to sign the transfer of

ALEXANDER'S POV It was the second time in the month that I woke up with such head splitting headache.I held my temples with both hands as I stood up to clear the mess I had created the previous day."What happened?" I muttered and paused to enable me to recall what had happened the previous day."Oh," I exclaimed in realisation. The stunt Kevin had pulled, and the heartbreaking words Rubby had said to me.But my brain kept reminding me that I was forgetting something."What else?" I grumbled.I shrugged my shoulders when I couldn't remember, and continued cleaning the mess I had made.Midway into my cleaning services, my phone buzzed.I stared at it for a moment trying to recollect when and how I had seen that number, because it looked oddly familiar, till the call ended. Not even up to twenty seconds, it started ringing again, I was pushed to answer the call this time."Have you forgotten the board has a meeting today?" Grant me this one request."I sat like a statue and watched her pick her things till she walked away. Suddenly, my heart felt so heavy and cold, as though a bag of frozen water had been kept in it.Moments later, I found my legs.
