MARIA
“She’s sick, Mar”
She shortened my name in a whisper as i held myself against the kitchen counter. I felt strength depart from my hands, i closed my eyes.
“She’s really sick” Went on echoing in my head as that was one of my biggest fears, the first of which was not having to see her before she dies.
But everything began to seem alot realer. Not just the type of health scares she had or something that had to do with her meds. It was covid, and it was a whole lot serious that we doubted she’ll make it.
“You might need to come back home, sooner” That was what prompted that statement and we both understood. I immediately felt the presence of my mother trailing behind me before i opened them.
“What about Wu? How’s she doing with everything?” I asked, not bothering to look b
MARIAI folded the shirts neatly in my hands before slipping into the luggage that was halfway packed. Just this one, i had the other three by the door.A gazzilion thoughts ravaged through my mind. Thoughts from the time in which i first left Miami to get back to Mexico. The thoughts reminded of how i walked down the airports and into the arms of my mother and my two boys, then i didn’t even have any intention of returning back. But i hadn’t known—It was on pressing into the bag, that i noticed something sticking out. Something hard and it was my passport and my green card. I picked it up, knowing i hadn’t even seen it after that time. After when i was released from being locked up by ICE.The thoughts went far beyond shallow and through all of the shit i had been, i and the girls. And Aal and for a moment, i was scared that this was going to be it. The sequence—
MARIA“Remission”I felt the weight that clung to my heart slowly drop and my eyes twinkled with tears. My lips quivered as i couldn’t bear to say the words. And even though i didn’t even know what it meant, i knew it had to better, than the tumor was progressing, or the normal, i’m sorry. Or you might need to come to the hospital. It was unbelievable.“Ma. It’s in remission” I screamed over the top of my voice as my mother neared both Rafael, who i knew couldn’t understand what was going on, and I.“What does that even mean?” My mother asked. “It means it’s almost gone. I’m healing” I whispered.“I’m healing” I repeated, but this time to myself. And Mateo, who had heard the yelling, walked in as i groped
WU9:21PM"Look who it is, i thought you'd never come back" Fox gritted through his teeth, not bothering to look back at us, heavily surrounded by his guards. I gazed to the grounds and the table surface that was messed with powder and drugs and the walls. You might have asked why we didn't call the police or choose the easier way out, but looking at this, the police wouldn't want to care who was involved or not. It was my building now, and i was apart of it, i dealt in it whether i liked it or not. I couldn't risk going to jail for that."You know a little birdy came to me" He finally made an effort to turn around with a knife in his hands. I jerked immediately, moving closer to Jade and he chuckled, staring right in her eyes."I just hope it isn't true" He sang softly as he moved closer to Jade, his fingertips rubbing softly against the tip of the sharp knife that it grazed into his skin. He bled,
JACQUELINE5:00AMI looked eagerly out of the windows as he approached the club that was barred with red and yellow tapes. He pulled up and i opened the door to alight from the car. It was upon touching the ground with my feet that i halted at such familiarity.Even the air held some memories that flashed before my eyes and they looked up to see the police vehicle’s around the premises. The sound of the sirens still wailed in my ears as i remembered this moment, i over a year ago. With the police and the tapes, except then it was Ruby. What a circle, the last hear had been for us.I sniffled the tears that shimmered in my eyes as i pushed forward, abandoning both Leroy and Harry in the back of the car. The paramedics hung around the entrance, slightly behind the back of an open ambulance.
WUIt was hard for her to open her eyes.Hard for me. And it took a lot of effort to part my eyes. The blur was the first thing that me, as i groaned, ruffling in the sheets to turn over. My ears picked the lowest drip above me. And the beeping of the heart monitor. And then a whisper—I recognized her voice."She's awake" Jacqueline cheered, as my eyes cleared to see her, first. And then Diane, by the side of my bed. She was in her black face mask but she pulled it down to reveal her smile.I scoffed as Jacqueline made her way forward. "You're awake?" She muttered as a sly smile made its way to the corner of my lips. Even something as little as natural as that, caused pain to radiate in my sides. Like all the muscles were somewhat joined together. I heaved a sigh, which was a terrible idea."Are you okay?" Diane noticed the inconvenience and i, noticed how she hadn't eve
MARIAI leaned against the glass windows. It was cool and you could hear the harsh droplets of rain on it. I had loved the rain growing up——and all i wanted was the soft water flowing down from my shaved head, down my face and dripping from my chin like lemon juice. I remembered all that had changed since i had left Miami. And i was to show up, now bald. Now, with cancer and now, without my mother. And then i snapped back, hearing Jacqueline’s whisper on the phone.“I don’t know what to do”I had drifted for a second and i raised my face from the glass. “You should do what she’d want you to do” I replied, hoping it was in context.“Take off the plugs?” She asked and i hummed. “Her and Dele. One of them has to be on the vent because it’s scarce. If Aal would have wanted anything, it’s to give it to him. It’s to give. And i have to make that decision for her and it’s hard”
JACQUELINEAaliyah walked towards the door, twisting the knob to slide the lock out of place. I could see her shadows from beneath her door. It had approached after knowing merely twice. And then the door swung open to reveal her in an apron——and a half wide smile. “Jacqueline, now what are you doing here?” She asked, sticking the tips of her fingers into her mouth. “I just came to see you” I replied as i walked in, closing the door behind me.NOWI walked in, brushing shoulders with the sheriff that was just about to take his leave from Wu’s room. I trailed him with the corner of my eyes as the door closed behind him. They were scattered around the halls i had noticed. And Wu was seated up, against her pillow which was against the wall. She looked better. She was better. She had a bandage wrapped around her left wrist and one around

Jacqueline had her legs up in the air as Harry squeezed her palms tightly. She couldn't believe she was here, doing this again."Push" The nurse yelled into her ears as she felt hands running down her thighs. "You're contracting, baby's coming out soon" You could hear the sound of her hands against the gloves.Jacqueline's head was tilted and her eyes faced the ceiling, refusing to look at Harry who was barely holding himself together in his blue scrubs and the napkin he had against her sweaty forehead. She was weak, feeble as if it were her first time. She couldn't believe she'd have another this soon, and all she could hear was the sound of their voices the night they talked about it.NINE MONTHS AGOThere was still a box lying on the kitchen counter. Jacqueline was in Harry's hands as they watched the tom and jerry movie. It was whilst giggling tha
161JACQUELINE BAIEMy feet brushed against the wet grasses, i had taken off my shoes as i fled down the hills in his hands. You could hear his brief chuckles and my loud giggles as i almost tripped. He halted to catch me in his hands. His arms wrapped around me as the winds breezed into my face, swaying my hair to the sides. I wore a smile on my face as it all moved slowly——i was here, not mentally but in this exact moment. Physically, in a short white dress and a veil that had fallen along the aisle. And i wanted to stay here. I wanted to always be here.He gripped me a little hard that it began to tickle and i pushed him away to the ground before making a run for it. I ran towards where the sun was setting and where i could still see Maria and the other people and the wedding canopy that we had set.Just a few of us, family. That had always been here for the big and small moment
WUI had always wanted to bring her flowers, but not like this, not at her grave. It was shimmering with snow that dropped to the ground. And my boots were buried in it whilst i stared at the red flower i had dropped it. I looked to the chair that was beside, snow on the seats before i sat in. My gloved hands wrapped my elbows as i moved my head warmer. Each breath i took gave accompanied with a chill. It was freezing out here. But i didn’t care. I just wanted to see her.“Anyways Fox is going to spend time. Life probably, i just don’t want to know or get myself involved in anything like that” I said, as if we had been talking for a long time. Silence dawned as i looked to the gatekeeper. He was already used to me coming here since the past few months and talking to a corpse. I wasn’t crazy, he knew it.He would often say how i wasn’t the only person that came here to do it. The truth is,
JACQUELINETWO MONTHS LATER"The loss of a someone close to us is perhaps one of the deepest and most sensitive we will ever come to experience. It can be difficult to process these emotions and work through the stages of grief" I had started out, calm as if i’d gotten my emotions in check. You could hardly believe that i was the same one that broke out in tears a while ago.I cleared my throat, staring Wu in the eyes, who had nodded to give me a sort of encouragement. I then breathed heavily before i carried on."To say Aaliyah was selfless would be an understatement— She was more and to a lot of us, even more. She tried her best to brighten our lives even when she was living in the dark" I paused.I had read all the articles to prevent me from crying when i passed the eulogy. I had read about remembering to breathe, eating befo
WUEverywhere was silent, the door had finally stopped swinging as the nurse went back out. The same nurse that had wheeled me in. I sat in my chair in front of the bed in which she was laid open. The nurse had raised the sheets over her head but i was sure that she was listening. I had hoped that she was listening.Jade.Tears overwhelmed my eyes before they fell down my cheeks. The tears that were more than enough to ache the throat and make the voice disappear. I searched for the words to say as i finally saw her unconscious body, laying across the bed. I didn’t know it was going to be this hard to do this.“J—” I couldn’t get passed the first letter of her name as my voice quivered. I was shaking, as i buried my face into the tissue in my hands. I snorted in it before heaving in a deep breath.“Hey Jade” I broke into uncontrollabl
