One month later
“ If we follow this procedure, we’re certain to see a 2% increase by the end of the year.”
Chris announced with a proud smile as the board of directors congratulated him. As the supervisor of Stark's Industries import and export, Chris felt proud of his work.
Liam's voice cut through the applause. “ Do you think this is a joke?” His tone wiped the smile off their faces. “ We're supposed to hit a 5% increase before the end of the year. Are any of you serious about your jobs?” his blue eyes narrowed, burning into each person seated at the table.
Liam clenched his jaw, his frustration evident. Ever since that night with Evelyn, he couldn't focus. He regretted his words to her afterward, telling her it had been a mistake. He lied, it had been the best night of his life.
Her soft, smooth skin haunted him, invading his thoughts when he least expected it. It had been a month since that night and he had been avoiding her, he felt himself softening up to her in ways that scared him.
“ Don't call for a meeting again until I see some real improvements,” Liam said, standing up, leaving the boardroom. He could hear the grunts of frustration from members behind him but he didn't spear them a glance. They knew better than to challenge him.
“ Get me a cup of coffee, ” he ordered his secretary, Ophelia who was struggling to keep up with his brisk pace. She had been working with the company for two years now, a smart girl in her twenties, one of the few people who he could count on.
“ Your father is in your office sir," Ophelia's voice broke through his thoughts.
Liam stopped abruptly, his jaw tightening as the word “ father ". The mere mention of that word sent a wave of frustration and anger through him.
“ Why is he here? And why is he in my office?” he turned to face her.
“ He didn't say sir, he just went straight in.”
Liam let out a frustrated breath. He knew his father's unannounced visits always came with trouble.
“ Get me everything you can find on Christopher Scott ” his voice darker now. “ I want full details, connections to my wife, both past and present. I need them by next week”
He didn't trust Christopher, and whatever his link was to Evelyn he would find out.
Liam strode towards his office, his fists clenched tightly in frustration. As he pushed the doors open, he was faced with the sight of his father, absentmindedly rolling a globe in his hands.
“ What are you doing here?" Liam questioned, his irritation evident.
Oliver looked up, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.
" I'm your father and also the former CEO of….”
" You are not my father!” Liam cut him off, anger flashing in his eyes as he watched his father's jaw tighten.
“ I don't have time for this, why are you really here?”
“ You've forgotten?” Oliver questioned, rising up from the desk, walking towards Liam. “ Evelyn's first gala is tonight, she invited your mother and me.”
“ Damn it, ” Liam muttered to himself. He'd completely forgotten about the gala. Tonight she'd be announcing to the world that Stark industries is the number one supporter of Jones Enterprise. He couldn't fail to be absent being the CEO.
“ I'll be attending later, I’ve got work to finish ” he said without looking up. “ You can leave if you're done.”
Oliver's expression darkened as he stepped closer “ Don’t screw this up, Liam," he warned. “ Reporters will be everywhere, so behave." He gave Liam a hard pat on the back before leaving the office.
Liam scoffed as the door closed behind his father. He turned to the stack of paperwork on his desk, but his mind still lingered on Evelyn and that night.
******************
“ You're late,” Evelyn said the moment Liam walked into the gala. His gaze immediately landed on her, admiring her dress. She wore a sapphire gown that seemed to hug her curves that shimmered under the lights, paired with the diamond earrings he'd left for her this morning. “ Wear it to you gala.” his note had said, and there she was, looking stunning in the outfit he'd silently chose for her. He'd also changed his suit to match hers.
" Eyes up here, mister," Evelyn clapped her hands, drawing his attention from where it lingered on her chest.
“ Shall we? ” Liam asked as he extended his hands out to her. For a brief second, he wasn't sure she'd take it, but then her fingers slipped into his. Her touch was warm and soft, sending a jolt of reassurance through him.
As they walked through the grand doors of the hall, murmurs erupted from the crowd. Liam could feel the weight of their gazes, admiration, curiosity, perhaps even envy. But none of that mattered, in that moment he could only focus on Evelyn.
His eyes roamed the room, soaking in the radiant decorations. The hall was adorned with regal purple flowers that created an electrifying presence. Dangling lights that made it look like the stars were right above our heads, each twinkling with a different color as if to dance to the rhythm of the universe.
A bright stage that highlighted the attraction. As he looked around, he could feel the weight of everyone's eyes observing the room, admiring the radiant decorations.
“ You really went all out," Liam commented, glancing around. “ You look gorgeous, by the way."
She turned to him, a smile plastered on her face, “ You don't look bad yourself. "
Liam held Evelyn's hand as they both approached his business partners. It was a gathering of many influential figures, those who missed their wedding were present there. Liam had extended visitations to make sure they were all present.
“ Evelyn, dear, it's so good to see you,” Harper squealed, giving Evelyn a warm hug. She wore a ruby gown which made her much younger. “ I can see Liam takes care of you well.”
Liam heard Evelyn scoff silently at the comment, her eyes narrowing slightly. He squeezed her waist, earning him a glare from Evelyn.
“ What a pleasure to meet you " a voice chirped in, drawing their attention. Charlotte and Robert, Evelyn's parents strolled over, greeting everyone with smiles.
Liam could feel Evelyn stiffen at the sight of her parents.
“ Mom, Dad " she greeted, forcing a smile.
“ Evelyn, you didn't bother to come see your parents after the accident" Charlotte said, glancing between them with a mix of disappointment and accusation.
“ Your honeymoon is all set! We've made all the preparations at a private island in the Maldives.” Charlotte and Harper squeaked.
The thought of being on a private island with Evelyn sent chills down Liam's spine. He couldn't be alone with her talk more of a being on a private island.
“ The private jet will be ready by next week, so get…” Charlotte started, but was suddenly interrupted by the loud cracke of a microphone.
“ Good evening, everyone! I have an announcement to make!"
Liam froze. That voice, Scarlett. What the hell is she doing here?
All eyes turned to the stage. Liam's jaw dropped as he saw Scarlett swaying, looking drunk. Oliver's expression darkened as he looked between Liam and Scarlet sensing that something was off.
“ What did you do Liam?" Oliver demanded. The sudden shift of attention to him, made his pulse race.
He turned to Evelyn, guilt washing over him as he whispered “ I'm sorry."
Evelyn's brow furrowed in confusion. “What's happening?”
Liam knew Scarlett was about to ruin everything.
Scarlett grinned at the crowd “ You're wondering who I am," she slurred. " I'm Liam's fiancee.” she held up her hand, revealing a diamond ring engraved with an“ S," making the audience gasp in shock.
“ Now now, don't look so sad everyone, this was meant to be an interesting night," Scarlett's voice slurred, staggering toward Liam and pressing a sloppy kiss on his cheek.Evelyn's stomach clenched, her eyes glued to the red lipstick smudged on Liam's skin. Her insides burned, this was supposed to be her night, her first gala, but it's all ruined thanks to Liam and his whore. " Get this woman out of here this instant!” Liam barked at the bodyguards who rushed over.Evelyn's breath caught when she saw him rip the ring off Scarlett's finger. Her gaze darted the room, noticing the curious eyes of every guest on her. The tabloids will surely get this, creating a huge scandal for her.“ Liam, Why are you doing this? I gave you everything! Why did you break up with me? ” Scarlett struggled against the bodyguards, her mascara running down her tear streaked face.“ Not after what you did," Liam retorted." What, I.…..”“ You fucking slept with Christopher! " Liam growled.Evelyn gasped, as t
Liam stood at the entrance of the jet, waiting patiently for Evelyn who took her precious time getting ready. He picked up Evelyn at Ava's house this morning and after that, they both headed straight to the airport. They were followed by paparazzi all the way to the airport, Liam could sight their cameras secretly flashing light at them. Liam's attention were drawn back to Evelyn as she struggled with her bags. He let out a sigh as he walked over to her.“ You can leave it to the chauffeur,” Liam said, his eyes briefly wandering over her figure. Evelyn wore a flair brown strapless gown that showed off her curves. Liam's gaze lingered on her for a while as he took in her attire. He groaned when he noticed she wasn't wearing a bra. “ I can manage,” Evelyn shook her head at him as she struggled with her suitcase. Liam ignored her protest as he signaled to the chauffeur, who quickly took the luggage from her. Evelyn scoffed as she headed into the jet. Liam couldn't help but let out a
Evelyn felt the cool ocean breeze graze her skin as she looked at the sparkling blue waters. Without hesitation, she waded in letting the waves engulf her. For a moment she felt free, away from the hurt that Liam harsh words had left behind. But Liam's voice still lingered on Evelyn's mind just as they did back in high school. Sighing, Evelyn climbed back onto the shore and picked up her phone, dialing Ava's number, hoping for a bit of comfort.“ Hello girl! How's your honeymoon? Hope you're having a good time?” Ava's voice chirped on the other end.Evelyn forced a smile. “ Honestly, it's boring," she replied, reaching for her glass of wine and taking a sip.“ Boring? Isn't Liam with you?”Evelyn hesitated, glancing out at the waves. “ No, he's not," Ava was silent for a moment before speaking to her again, her tone gentle. “ Evelyn, are you okay?" Evelyn let out a bitter laugh, “ I'm fine.” She sighed and turned back to the call.“ So Ava, let's talk business. What can we do about
Evelyn occasionally stole glances at Liam as they made their way home. They landed back in New York a few hours ago, and she couldn't help but notice how uneasy Liam was.Evelyn reached out and took Liam's hands in hers. “ Your mum will be fine," she murmured softly, giving his hands a reassuring squeeze. Liam turned toward her, a faint smile curbing on his lips. His gaze flickere to her lips, and he felt a urge to kiss it. He’d been telling himself over and over that he just needed to have a taste of her lips again. Evelyn's heart raced as she watched Liam inch closer. What was he about to do? She asked herself, barely able to keep her breath steady. Before she could process it, Liam's lips were on hers capturing her in a heated kiss. She responded by hungrily, both their mouths moved in unison, each fighting for dominance. Evelyn had missed this, she couldn't deny she had been waiting for this moment since the last time they kissed. Liam's hands slid up her shirt, undoing the butt
Scarlett made her way through the polished floors of the hotel lobby. She spotted Christopher at the table in the corner, sipping his coffee. He looked up as she approached, a smile forming on his lips.“ Christopher," Scarlett began, taking a seat opposite him. Christopher leaned back with a smirk. “ To what do I owe this pleasure?" Scarlett crossed her legs as she tapped the table impatiently." We have a mutual interest, right? Evelyn Jones." Christopher smirk grew louder as he looked at her. " Interesting, go on.”" You and I both know she doesn't belong here. She took what's mine, Liam, and I know you want her back. But what if I told you we could bring about her downfall?”Christopher raised an eyebrow at her, “ What do you have in mind?" Scarlett smirked, loving how responsive Christopher was. “ Her company is her pride and joy. Destroy that and she will come crawling back, desperate and weak. And that's where you'll come in.”Christopher nodded, this was definitely a good p
Evelyn reclined in her chair, her face glowing under the bright stadium lights as the game commenced with a resounding cheer. She beamed, appearing truly at ease for the first time in weeks. Next to her was Pierce, a captivating grin on his face, his gaze intently fixed on her every reaction. Liam, sitting next to Evelyn, observed Pierce's looks but opted to disregard them, sipping his beverage and focusing his eyes on the game. "Is this your first baseball game, Evelyn?" Pierce inquired, casually moving nearer so that only she could listen. Evelyn laughed lightly, casting a quick look his way. "Indeed, yes." It is thrilling, however. "I was not anticipating to find so much enjoyment in it." Pierce's grin grew larger. "I'm happy to have been involved in your first experience, then." Liam cast a look, his jaw clenching slightly. "Evelyn and I typically attend many of these events," he stated, his voice steady yet meaningful. "Recently, baseball didn’t rank highly on our list." Pie
The day started with a feeling of jubilation. Pete's chuckles reverberated through Ava's warm apartment, adorned with streamers and balloons in every nook. Evelyn had put in a lot of effort to plan the ideal surprise for her son's birthday. Together with her closest friend Ava, she adorned the area with vibrant hues and made Pete’s beloved chocolate cake. Mia assisted in coordinating the games, and Pete's friends had assembled, filling the apartment with their vibrant presence. Evelyn experienced a unique sense of serenity as she observed her son's smile. Being a mother was her refuge, where she made memories for her son and pushed away the complexities of her life, even if just temporarily. In the afternoon, the party started to wind down. Pete dozed off on the couch, holding onto his cherished present - a toy spaceship gifted to him by Evelyn - while parents arrived to collect their kids. Ava volunteered to tidy up while Evelyn took a break, and Mia departed for the day, ensuring
In the poorly lit room, Scarlett sat holding her phone tightly, scrolling through the messages she had sent Evelyn in the previous week. Every text left unanswered and every call ignored felt like a blow to her self-esteem. She asked herself if Evelyn had taken the time to read them. The idea seared Scarlett internally, prompting her to throw her phone onto the table, its screen briefly illuminating before dimming again. She was alerted by the quiet footsteps to the presence of her informant, a thin man who moved in a shadowy manner. Scarlett didn't care to glance at him when he placed an envelope on the table. "Her presence was noted at Liam's birthday celebration," he commented, his voice velvety but hinting at something dark. Scarlett's head jerked up, her eyes narrowing. " Evelyn? At his party?" The man gave a nod. " She stood nearby. She arrived tardy, however she still showed up." Scarlett reclined in her seat, her fingertips drumming on the sleek surface of the table while
Evelyn opened her eyes, the morning light reflecting on her. She blinked, her thoughts drifting to last night's events, the dinner, Liam. The easy his eyes sparkled, she seemed truly happy that he was changing. And then that message.“Hey, Lyn.”“I’ve missed you, Lyn. We need to talk.”Her heart dropped, her hands gripping into the sheets. Christopher. She never thought she would face him again. The name she had locked away with a thousand memories she wished she could forget. She turned her head to the side. Liam was still asleep, his fell felnu to his face. She smiled as she watched him peacefully sleeping. He looked different, he looked peaceful, he looked like she could trust him. That she can love him. She can't let him know about Pete, not yet.Evelyn slipped out of the bed, careful not to make noise so he wouldn't wake up. Her moments were quiet, her feets barely making a noise. She headed towards the bathroom and took a shower. After she was done, she picked a black dress and
Evelyn decided to visit her company the next morning. She stood outside the building and was mesmerized by it. Workers roamed the place, each carrying different building materials as they laid out the foundation from scratch.“Liam,” She smiled, remembering what he said yesterday. He had done it. Just as he’d promised. Her gateman, Daniel, approached her, a knowing grin on his face. “Morning, Evelyn. Mr. Liam left a note for you.”He handed Evelyn a small envelope. Inside, Liam’s elegant handwriting read: "Dinner tonight? Let’s celebrate your empire."Evelyn smiled to herself, her fingers curling around the envelope. She couldn't shake away the new feeling she felt at that moment. That evening sounded… nice.**************************Evelyn went home hours later and was surprised to find some girls in her living room, all gorgeously dressed, with makeup kits in her hands. “Good Day ma'am,” one of the girls smiled. “Mr Stark sent us here to get you prepared for tonight." “Sent by Li
Liam sat back at the couch with frustration. The neon lights of the club steadily casting shadows across his face. The girl, "Pinkie,"leaned closer as she traced a finger along his jaw. “So, is this how it ends, handsome? No fun tonight?”Liam’s lips curled into a dangerous smile. “Trust me, sweetheart, you wouldn’t survive the kind of fun I’m thinking about.”Her playful smirk fell and she shifted uncomfortably as Archer walked back into the room.“What’s this? She’s not your type?” Archer asked, tossing Liam another glass of whiskey.Liam ignored the question, downing the drink in one go before standing. “Not tonight.” He wasn't in the mood for this as he could only think of Evelyn.Archer raised a brow, staring at Liam as he straightened his tie and adjusted his jacket. “Man, you’re slipping. A few months ago, she wouldn’t have been walking out of here at all.”Liam’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. He pushed past Archer, his mind already somewhere else.*******************
Liam sat in his office, his face pale as he held an envelope in his hands. He opened it once more and rubbed his temples. It was a picture of Evelyn and Christopher enjoying each other's company.Liam groaned once more swaying in his seat. He stared closely at Evelyn's smile. Damn, she has never smiled that way since they both got married.Taking a sip out of his coffee, he dialed Ophielia’s number.“ My office now." he barked, cutting the call before any response.Few minutes later, a sweaty looking Ophielia ran in his office looking tense as she glanced around. She sighed in relief as she saw Liam sitting relaxed on his chair.“ You called for me sir," she said, entering further into his office.Liam looked up from the envelope, tossing it to Ophielia. She stared at him weirdly before picking it up from the table. She rolled her eyes when she glanced at the picture. This was the fifth time Liam had called her to look at the picture. Apparently he told her to do some research on Evely
The next morning started off weirdly. Evelyn was jolted awake by sounds of footsteps pacing the room. She groggily opened her eyes and saw Liam looking tense as he went out to the balcony. She cleaned her eyes, rolling over to the side of the bed and checked the time. It was only 7:15. Unlike Liam, he gets up late. She stood up, walking towards the dresser and picked up her robe. Wearing it, she strolled toward where Liam was. “Morning,” Evelyn said, yawning. Her body ached from all the work she had been doing in the company.Liam didn’t respond.“Liam?” she tried again, stepping closer.“What?” he snapped, his voice sharp.Evelyn froze mid-step. “I was just saying good morning. What’s your problem?”He turned around, his eyes roaming her figure before scoffing. “ I don't have a problem, Evelyn.”She crossed her arms. “Oh, really? Because you’re acting like you do. Care to explain, or are we just going to play this game all day?”Liam let out a humorless laugh. “You always need to di
