Will woke up with a slight headache and some dizziness. To his surprise he felt a lot stronger than before. For a split second he thought he was back in his human body, and that everything before was a horrible dream. However that wasn't the case, his surroundings were a lot darker than where he had been feeding, but he could still see quite well. He heard the snoring of his siblings in the same room, there were seven of them and all were male. He slowly walked out of the cave in a cautious manner, but as soon as he came out of the cave entrance and into a wider tunnel, someone grabbed his neck and lifted him off the ground. He struggled for a bit but didn't yell or scream, the ȧduŀt Goblin holding him up was looking at Will carefully. The Goblin showed Will a wry smile then started carrying him further down the tunnel.
After following the tunnel and passing several entrances, they reached a similar dome shaped room like the one Will had previously encountered, but this one was slightly smaller and had a pile of rags on one end and some sticks at the opposite end. The ȧduŀt Goblin let go of Will and grunted at him, while shoving Will along with his foot. Will had a confused look on his face, but soon realized he was being nudged in the direction of the clothes. However Will didn't do as the ȧduŀt Goblin wanted and instead ran towards the sharp sticks, he stumbled a bit along the way but he didn't slow down. Ever since Will woke up in this body, he had a certain knot in his heart. It had been there all along, it was a type of despair, a sense of lack of control. He wanted to take back some control in his life, which is why he ran towards the sticks. He pick up the one that looked the sturdiest and immediately got in an attack stance. Will had no previous martial arts experience, however he took a stance that seemed the most logical from what knowledged he had absorbed from media in his previous world.
The ȧduŀt Goblin looked at Will with a very surprised expression, but surprisingly started to laugh. The Goblin walked closer with his stick aimed at Will, but not in a threatening manner, he looked almost playful. However the sharp toothed grin on the Goblins face still made him look menacing. Once the Goblin reached Will, he started swinging the stick. Will had taken a wide legged stance giving him more stability, so once the swings that he parried didn't knock him on his back, the Goblin was surprised. The swings started getting a bit faster and stronger, and Will was struggling a lot to stay on his feet. He didn't want to give up, the knot in his heart started throbbing, it was as if Will was getting a panic attack. Despair showed in Wills eyes, as he let out a scream. Will pulled back his stick on the latest swing from the Goblin instead of parrying. The Goblin lost his balance as his swing had completely missed. Will took this opportunity to thrust his stick forwards and he managed to stab the Goblin in the thɨġh. The Goblin let out a blood-curdling scream and started rolling on the ground in pain.
Almost immediately another Goblin came running into the small cave. Will panicked thinking he was going to get killed for attacking another Goblin. However the second Goblin just stood there taking in the scene. To Wills surprise the second Goblin just started laughing hysterically. More and more Goblins entered the room, and after exchanging a couple of guttural words with each other they all started to laugh. The biggest of the new Goblins walked up to Will and grabbed his stick, but Will didn't want to let go. The big Goblin yanked again and stick again straight out of Wills hands. He then grabbed Will by the neck with his other hand and walked out of the cave, he had been laughing throughout the entire ordeal. Soon after they reached a smaller room, this room was different than the ones Will had been in before. It had some adornments on the ground. Will saw a wolf pelt, some polished rocks and to his surprise a large leather helmet. This was the first piece of 'advanced' technology Will had seen since coming to this world. As soon as the big Goblin released Will, he ran towards the leather helmet and examined it. [It's too big to fit a Goblin head, so why would this be here? Is it a trophy like the pelt?], it suddenly dawned on Will, this was a human helmet. He had forgotten that he was a Goblin, and Goblins were much smaller, at least according to the stories from his previous world.
The big Goblin walked over to Will, and with a proud look on his face he patted the helmet. He then let out a short grunt while pointing at the helmet. Will looked confused for a second but wondered if the grunt from the Goblin was actually the word for helmet. Will tried repeating the grunt. The Goblin looked surprised at Will for a second, then he chortled and patted Will on the head. The Goblin went into a corner in the room and grabbed a piece of dried meat from a small stone bowl, he brought it back to Will and threw it in front of him. Will grabbed it and ferociously gnawed on it. While eating, Will took a closer look at the big Goblin. To Wills surprise, this Goblin was actually quite different. He had more defined muscles and plenty of scars, he was even missing a piece of his pointed ear. Will decided to call this Goblin 'Chief'. Will had ȧssumed this was the Chief of the Goblins because of all the trophies in the room and the rough appearance of the Goblin. That and none of the other Goblins had objected when Will was taken away from the violent scene.
While consuming the dried meat, Will soon felt the knot in his heart loosen slightly. He wasn't very comfortable, but he felt slightly safer, at least compared to before. Will started nodding off, and with a half eaten piece of meat in his mouth, Will fell asleep on the floor of the Chiefs room.
In the following days Will had gone to the Chiefs room after waking up. Chief didn't seem to mind, and kept teaching Will more words. Will was surprised at the rate he was absorbing information, it was like his brain was a sponge. Chief would also wrestle with Will sometimes and even spar with the sticks. Will was still very small, but to his surprise, only a couple of days passed and his muscles had already grown and he felt much stronger. Will could also stay awake for an entire day instead of falling asleep all the time. [Goblins seem to grow and develop much faster than humans. It's only been a week and a half and I can almost understand Chief, I can even run around half the day without getting tired.]Will came to understand how the Goblins lived after a while longer. They didn't have any kind of tribal structure or any type of government as Will had previously thought. They were anarchists, they helped each other from time to ti
When Will woke up again, he was leaned against the cave entrance alone. Chief had probably just dropped him there before dealing with their catch. He got up and started heading for his room, it was still night so his siblings were probably still sleeping. Will sat down on the ground opposite to where the others were sleeping and started thinking about what happened today.[This can't be how they usually hunt right? It's too inefficient, there has to be something I can do. First of all, they go in large groups. If they went alone or at least in pairs, they could be more stealthy and there would be more hunting groups out there catching more prey. However the reason they go in large groups is probably because their tools are so weak. Those sharpened sticks didn't do anything to the boar's thick hide. Maybe I can do something about that, I don't know how to make bows which would be a lot better, but at least I can make spear tips and knives. Maybe onc
What happened next left Will in disbelief. The other Goblins had charged the boar without any planning or strategy. In addition, they were screaming and yelling their lungs out! The boar was immediately startled and tried charging away, but some of the Goblins had managed to surround it already. Chief was one of them, he was staring it right in the eyes. However the boar continued charging, Chief managed to roll to the side dodging the boar, but the two Goblins next to him got knocked in different directions. The size of the boar compared to the Goblins was huge, it was like a bull compared to a human. One of the Goblins who got knocked away hit a tree trunk, the sound of the spine snapping was loud and made all the other Goblins stop in their tracks. Will walked over to Chief and helped him off the ground, Chief had a huge grin on his face. "Why happy? Boar gone!" Will exclaimed with his still developing Goblin vocabulary. Chief just shook his hea
Currently there were only three people in the room. Will, Chief and something else. Chief had called it a sow, but it wasn't a pig. Will realized it was female because of the brėȧst and her genitalia was exposed. She had a greenish brown skin color, but was it a female Goblin? She was rather large, Will even estimated that she was bigger than a regular sized human, at least humans from his world since he had never seen a human here before. She was tied up to large boulders in the room, but even if she wasn't it didn't look like she had the strength to struggle. She had small cuts and bruises all over her body, her eyes were glazed over as if she didn't have any consciousness, but she would sometimes let out painful mȯȧns every now and then while she breathed. Will suddenly felt an urge, an instinct. The first Goblin instinct he had besides eating, he wanted to jump whatever it was that was in front of her and mate. However the human part in his mind was aware of
After hearing about the scout, Will knew they had a day, maybe two at most. So he immediately went through all the preparations he had made. For defenses he realized the best option they had was to use the narrow caves to funnel the Orcs, he didn't know how many were going to come, but numbers wouldn't be an issue if they could fight in the tunnels. He also decided to take advantage of the difference in height, he got all the Goblins to help him drive thick and sharp stakes to stick out of the cave walls above Goblin height. That way it would be hard for the Orcs to move around unscathed. Will had also managed to take advantage of the 'Adrenaline Mushrooms', he didn't have any apothecary skills, but he did some experimentation, and inhaling the mushrooms after drying and grinding them to dust made the effect almost instantaneously. So he handed small leather pouches to all the Goblins with the mushroom powder in it. Will knew that inh
Will was halfway through the cave system when he realized the Orc leader was quickly catching up to him. He finally couldn't stand it anymore and looked back. There he saw the towering Orc, slowly moving through the tunnels. The Goblins that came in its way were all crushed with one swing, sometimes two or three at a time. The defenses Will had set up, the stakes in the wall, all broke like twigs against the Orcs armor and muscles.[I was so naive, how could I think I had any chance, and it's only one Orc. I thought I could defend against more? How stupid! Goblins are too weak, way too weak!] Will turned back around and picked up his pace, he couldn't be bothered by the Goblins in the cave, most were dead anyway. He had only one last plan that could maybe help him survive, and if that didn't work, he would just have to accept his death. Will ran faster and faster, not stopping for anything until he reached his des
Him. Hours passed as Will sat slumped down in the corner of the cave, he had been silently clutching his left arm. Will had unconsciously grabbed his severed arm and held it against the open wound, almost as if he was trying to re-attach it. Will stirred back to life as he felt a slight tingling from his left arm, he couldn't move anything, and the wound had clearly not healed, it could even just have been his imagination. However this was enough to motivate him into moving again. In the hours Will had sat there, he had time to process all the intense emotions that surfaced during the morning massacre. After thinking for so long, Will's conclusion had led him to realize that everything that had happened was out of his control. The Goblin group was doomed even before Will was born into this world, and no amount of preparation he could make would have changed that. His only option was to get stronger so nothing like this would happen in the future, or if it did, that at least he would
Will was elated when he saw the dirt road, he suddenly lost all strength in his body as if all the exhaustion from the past month had finally caught up with him. He slid down on the ground for a while, but realized it wasn't completely safe so he got up and dragged his backpack back to the edge of the forest. He set up a small camp behind one of the larger trees so he had cover and started planning his next step. The road stretched from one horizon to the other, it was following the edge of the forest. On the other side of the road, there were only plains as far as the eyes could see. The plan was to head as far south as possible without endangering his life. He figured out that because the days were getting longer and longer as spring turned into summer, so he could safely ȧssume he was pretty far north on this world's hemisphere. So the more south he could get, the easier it would be to survive winter. However if he went too far south, he would encounter more civilization or more wi
The days grew colder and colder as winter approached, but the village just got more livelier. The streets were flooded with workers busy building new shacks and houses. The market street was bustling with new life and new wares. Most people weren't worried about thieves or pickpockets, which made sense considering the size and age of the village. Tighter communities had lower crime rates in general, besides, there was so much to do so there were plenty of jobs for everyone. Will had kept to himself for the most part. He had gotten bolder though, sneaking into the church's 'classroom' directly instead of watching from the window. Will was afraid of being noticed from the outside since the town was busier now, and he didn't like spending hours in the colSister Lina had moved on from teaching language to teaching history and religion. The religion worshiped a Goddess called the 'Nurturing Mother'. She was tolerant and caring, but
Thus passed the following days, weeks and months. Will had learned a lot in his time here, he was now proficient in reading and writing the human language. He could also understand speech, but since he didn't practice much, he couldn't tell how good he was at speaking it.This made him almost go mad, he had kept silent for so long. Sneaking around without getting noticed or making a sound, not speaking to anyone. If it wasn't for the nun's soothing voice every now and then, Will would probably have gone crazy by now. Even when he was alone in the forest, he couldn't speak to himself in fear of either getting noticed by random humans or scaring off his prey. He had also learned the nun's name was Lina. The kids called her Aunty Lina, and the ȧduŀts called her Sister Lina. She wasn't young, maybe in her mid thirties, but she had a clean ivory face, with almost no wrinkles. Will's routine was as follows: On weekdays he woul
Will was finally in a constant good mood, he had found a nice routine to his life. Four times a week the nun taught lessons to some of the village children, which meant Will would also watch the lessons through the window. On the other days when he was free, he would fix things in his new home, and also go out to gather odds and ends.It only took Will two weeks to learn very basic writing and reading skills, and was getting a mild grasp on the language the humans spoke. He was like a child, absorbing all the knowledge like a sponge. [Maybe this is a trait of being a Goblin?]Twice a week he would leave the village to the forest outskirts and gather some more mushrooms and hunt smaller prey. He wouldn't bring the meat back to the church, because the smell would probably get noticed. So after every hunt he would skin and dry the meat, and every subsequent time he went back he would bring the meat that was already p
Will felt so foolish, his whole plan depended on him not being noticed. Then he got noticed on the first morning after settling in. He rushed to the corner opposite to the entrance he had used and started digging, the ground underneath was just regular dirt so he managed to get a pretty big hole done in no time. After he figured the hole was deep enough, he grabbed his things and with them laid down in the whole. It was pretty dark under the church, so even if they did find the entrance, they wouldn't be able to see him from the opposite side. Will waited, the unnerving suspense had his muscles tensed the whole time. He kept a close eye on the crack to see if he could tell if any shadows passed by. He didn't see anything, however he did hear a couple of voice, but he didn't understand what they said. One voice was the woman who had shrieked, and the other was a deep gruff voice. They talked for a while, but nothing came of it. Will still didn't take any chances
As nightfall arrived, Will crawled out from under some bushes he had slept under. He was fully rested and had a sharp look in his eyes. Today was the day! After so much hard work, it would hopefully pay off. Will was excited, this was a new chapter in his recently acquired life. Will approached the village the sides, the front and the back of the village had roads coming out, so he decided to go from the sides. Once the patrolling guard past by his point of entry, Will immediately sprinted towards the village. The village itself looked empty, but it wasn't quiet. He could hear people conversing and moving around inside their houses. No one was poor enough to not have candles lit in their houses, which was a good sign for Will. This meant that the powers at be had allocated enough resources to this village for it to be worthwhile settling in.Will moved toward the center of the town, however there was an increased
