Chapter 8

Penulis: Angelica1
Tina was at once embarrassed and furious.

Seizing the moment when Henry was distracted by Linda's call and eased his grip, she launched her knee forcefully into his crotch.

"Oof—"

Henry grunted and lost his grip on Tina.

She seized that moment to get away from him and got out of Henry's car.

Then, holding tightly on her coat to hide her disheveled clothes while running to her car, she was still on edge until she locked the door.

-

Meanwhile, Henry lit himself a cigarette as he reclined against his seat.

Both his eyes were following Tina, while still remembering the way she looked beneath himself.

Her long hair disheveled, the hickeys he left bloomed like flowers in snow over her fair skin.

It was as devilish as it was alluring, and Henry's expression darkened as he gulped, his Adam's apple bobbing obviously.

He took a long, deep puff before exhaling, allowing the smoke to swirl around him, keeping his expression inscrutable.

That was until Linda asked in concern out loud, "What's wrong, Henry?"

"What is it?" he asked nonchalantly in return.

However, Linda had overheard the amorous gasp earlier, which left her stumped.

She was not a virgin, and hearing that already told her what Henry was doing.

Just an hour ago, Henry had an assistant take Linda home while he drove off by himself.

His very presence was ice-cold just then, so Linda did not dare to ask him to stay.

After all, she had no idea if he was upset that Tina hurt her, or that she went to meet Tina without asking.

To think that he went straight to Tina afterward for a booty call…

Linda's fingers clenched around her phone, but she was not about to vent her frustrations at Henry.

Instead, she kept her voice soft and rueful. "I thought you were upset with me, since you weren't there when I woke up."

Henry did not respond, however, and that alone was enough to tell her that he was indeed upset.

Even so, Linda was especially adept at knowing when to back down.

"I'm sorry," she promptly apologized. "I knew I shouldn't have gone to see Tina, but I didn't want to do it either. You see, my heart aches for Rory. She actually woke up late last night, but you were already gone, and she cried the whole night.

"She kept asking me why she can't be with her father even when we are all reunited, as if there's no difference between living here or abroad. You know how much we've gone through over the last five years, and my heart really hurts for her. So I got a little impulsive—"

"That won't happen again," Henry suddenly said, his tone once again gentle. "I'll take good care of you two."

"I'm sorry, I won't do it again. I know you're concerned for your grandmother, so I'll wait patiently… And I'll make sure to win the design competition, so that your father will acknowledge me."

"Yeah."

It was a quiet response.

Linda clenched her knuckles, as she did not get the promise she expected.

-

Over at Maple Park, once Tina got home, she headed straight to the room where she kept the urn containing Sophie's ashes.

Her fingers brushed gently over the urn, and her gaze overflowed with tender affection as she examined the photo beside it.

It was her daughter.

So pretty, so sweet, so adorable… and time had stopped moving for her now.

"Baby…"

Tears welled up in her eyes, and Tina rasped a promise. "Mommy will do her best."

She would do her best to win the competition and use the prize money to get her beloved daughter the best final resting place.

That way, Sophie would definitely be able to rest in peace and be born into a happy family in her next life, without having to endure the hardships she faced in this one.

-

Tina was late to register for the design competition and had to work overnight in order to finish her sketch just to make it in time.

Still, a day later, the organizers called and asked her to be present at Skymex Tower by two in the afternoon the next day.

After all, she still secured the last slot and would now compete against seven others for the top prize.

As she did not want to get stuck in traffic, she took the subway.

When she arrived outside Skymex Tower, she spotted a familiar Rolls-Royce Ghost—it was Henry's car.

Soon, Henry alighted, walking to the backseat and arching his back to gently carry Rory out of the car.

Hugging his neck, she giggled sweetly, "Thanks, Daddy! I love you!"

Linda hovered beside them, pretending to be jealous. "Only Daddy? What about Mommy?"

"I love you too, Mommy. Kiss!"

Rory puckered her lips, but waited for Linda to get over instead of reaching her.

Linda's smile broadened as she gazed upon her daughter tenderly.

Naturally, she leaned in, not about to let her chance slip.

With Henry carrying Rory, leaning in meant getting very close—so close that Linda could feel his breath on her cheek.

She flushed right then and cast a shy glance at Henry, her gaze saying a thousand words while her heart pounded.

It was such a romantic sight that all eyes were on them.

Henry was the head of the Barnes family. As a powerhouse in the city of Jadelight, he rarely made public appearances, so many did not recognize him.

But with that tall, dark and handsome figure, and that exceedingly expensive car, it was not all that hard to guess.

In the end, all the ladies pursued good looks, wealth, and a family man—it was only natural that Linda was regarded with envy.

And Linda really enjoyed those looks, even pointedly shooting Tina a look where she stood.

After all, she had noticed Tina as soon as she showed up.

Her smile only broadened when she noticed that Tina was looking at her and Henry, though that same smile stiffened at the next instant.

They were close enough to see the design sketches Tina was holding—those designs, and at this time, could only mean that Tina was also here for the competition.

But she was not on the list! Linda had made sure to check just yesterday!

In the last round, she was only supposed to compete against six rivals—rivals whose standards were lackluster compared to her.

Victory was at hand, but now that Tina showed up…

Linda clenched her knuckles without knowing it.

Five years ago, she and Tina had both made it into Jadelight University as the top two entrants.

While Tina was in first place and Linda second, even Linda knew how huge the gap between them was despite being so close in placements.

In short, as long as Tina was around, Linda had no chance of winning.

Still, she suddenly asked out loud, "What is Tina doing here by herself?"

Hearing that, Henry turned where she was looking and frowned when she saw what Tina was holding.

Striding up to Tina, he demanded, "What are you doing here? Where's Sophie?"

Tina pretended not to hear him and kept going.

Looking around and not seeing Sophie left Henry's brow creasing further, however. "You call yourself a mother?! Sophie is only five, and you're leaving her alone at home?!"

Tina abruptly stopped in her tracks, suddenly wheeling on Henry with an icy glare as he kept carrying Rory."You never once cared about Sophie ever since she was born," she sneered coolly. "How did you find the audacity to accuse me here?"While Henry was stumped, Linda promptly leaped in, as understanding as ever."How could you say that? Unlike you, Henry's always busy with work and does not goof off at home like you. He can't help if he's neglected Sophie a little. If anything, you should be understanding instead of blaming him."And see? He loves children—why would he really neglect Sophie? Shouldn't you be reflecting on yourself instead?"Not only was she sucking up to Henry, but she was also throwing barbs at Tina for spoiling Sophie, which was why Henry did not favor her.Tina wheeled on her with a piercing glare and warned darkly, "You don't get to talk here."Tears promptly welled up in Linda's eyes as she leaned on Henry while shooting Tina a wounded look. "I'm sorry,

Tina glared at Henry incredulously. How could a child tell lies?!It was impressive how he said that out loud, considering all the times he refused to listen to Sophie. In fact, he had always snapped at the girl, calling her out for being dishonest, accusing her of making a habit of lying and always reminding her that she was a bad child.Talk about double standards! The single lie that Sophie ever told was when she had lied to Tina to cover for her father, who had broken their promise. And she paid for it with her life!Even so, Sophie remained so insignificant in Henry's eyes! Her eyes red as she glared at Henry, Tina coldly demanded, "So Rory is a child, but Sophie isn't?!""There's no comparing both of them!" Henry blurted.Tina's glare turned icy—so that was what he really thought. His darling Rory was just as perfect as her mother, the love of his life.As for Sophie, she was just as insignificant as her mother Tina.At that instant, Tina felt such terrible agony, as

Jimmy saw it too, and his temper flared right then."Son of a bitch!" he growled. "Sophie's ashes have yet to even turn cold, and he's already hooking up with that skank! I'm gonna sock him right in the face!"However, Tina kept a hand on him, stopping him from going over. "Don't. I'm done with him already. And didn't you say you're taking me on a road trip? Let's go already!"There was also the fact that Jimmy did not stand a chance against Henry…And with Tina stopping him, Jimmy had to give in and withhold his temper. He knew better than anyone how much she loved Henry.Over the last five years, he had seen how Tina suffered and compromised. And even before that, she safeguarded her virtue zealously for his sake.He really wanted to snap at her for being such a loser, only to notice the look on her face.In the end, she was the one hurting the most.As such, as Henry released Linda and turned toward them, Jimmy lifted his face shield with an audible snap just to shoot him

But without Henry holding her up, Tina's knees buckled and almost fell.By the time she steadied herself, Jimmy was already losing.Scrambling over, she stopped Henry from hitting Jimmy further, but Henry only stared daggers at her as he spat, "Get off!"Tina refused, but the fact that she was defending Jimmy only left Henry's glare colder.Grabbing Tina by the arm without a word, he shoved her aside, just as a breeze blew in and shut the door of the second bedroom with a bang.Henry naturally did not notice as he strode toward Jimmy.Jimmy was glowering just like him as he tried to stifle his burning chest and saw that Tina had lost her balance and fallen after Henry pushed her."Tina!"His eyes widened, he wanted to rush over to her side, but Henry grabbed his outstretched hand before he could reach her.At the same time, he kicked Jimmy viciously on the shin.As Jimmy's knee buckled, he dropped to one knee.Henry, still holding his hand, started to pull it backward, ready

Irene was stunned by Tina's slap. She was spoiled to bits from the time she was a child and was never scolded, let alone slapped!"How dare you!" Irene shrieked, ready to return the favor.Tina caught her wrist before she could, however, and glared at her murderously in turn. "Insult Sophie again, and I'll rip out your tongue!"The air around her was chilling, and it left Irene petrified, stumbling backward.Naturally, Tina refused to linger for another second longer.Even so, she felt further disenchanted that Henry completely ignored Irene insulting Sophie.Once Tina was gone, Irene was immediately complaining, "Henry, look—"Smack!Henry suddenly slapped Irene across the face, and very viciously at that!Irene was sent stumbling backward, losing her balance and dropping to her knees, even as she gaped at Henry in disbelief. "Henry? What are you doing?!"She was four when her mother took her back to live with the Barnes household. As there were no other daughters around,

At that very moment, Tina could see herself reflected in Henry's eyes. She mustered her courage and walked over, then stamped her feet on the thugs. However, her feet were still numb and she even fell, unable to inflict any damage."You're really useless." Henry chuckled and did the same to the thug who had reached Tina first, castrating him on the spot.Tina thought her heart could leap out of her chest, as she experienced falling in love for the first time.Henry used to be good to her too, but that could well be a secret now. After all, everything changed after Linda showed up.-Back to the present, Tina shut her eyes to quell her messy emotions. When she opened them again, her gaze was calm.Holding herself steady against the wall to get up despite the difficulty, she limped toward the man, stamping him viciously in the crotch. There was a blood-curdling scream, and the man soon collapsed on the ground limply. She did not fall this time, as a hand wrapped around her wa

Tina was basically dangling from Henry, wobbling as she followed. However, the bumpiness churned her stomach, and her pretty face was soon scrunched. In fact, they had just reached the bed when she retched audibly. "Bleurgh!"Henry paused, his face dropping. "Don't you dare—""Argh!"Even before he could finish, Tina vomited all over Henry, extinguishing the fire in his loins instantly. He did not hesitate to fling her onto the bed as if she was trash, leaving her grunting uncomfortably.Still, he sat on the edge, his expression dark as he looked at her vomit-covered clothes, while Tina remained squeaky clean.Red wine was always sweet, but vomit stank.Even as the pungent stench struck his nostrils, he felt sick too.He could strangle Tina right then and there!Unable to bear it for another second, he strode into the bathroom, still glowering as he stepped out thirty minutes later.Changing into the new clothes delivered to the apartment, he slammed the door shut resound

Professor Walls actually found the result disappointing too.He admired Tina's talent, just as he was plenty satisfied with her work in this competition. As such, he tried to console her, "It's just one loss, Tina. It doesn't mean much."However, he simply wasn't aware how important this was for Tina—she could barely keep a lid on her emotions as she asked with a quivering voice, "Did my work come up short?""Of course not!" Professor Walls denied it right then."Then what is the reason I lost?!" Tina cried, her voice shrill in agitation.Professor Walls could only sigh in exasperation."Tina, when you're actually in the business, you'll understand that none of us can fight against money. But don't feel dejected—you will always have my vote, and your future is always bright with your talent."Tina had to fight back her tears, as she was reminded of what she had seen earlier—the organizers flocking around Henry and Linda. Her unease was proven true at that very moment!"So, Li

It was a line that reminded Henry of that moment five years ago, and he nodded. "Yeah. I told you I'd never let you get hurt again, Linda."The single line offered Linda assurance, and she threw herself into Henry's arms."Henry…" She sobbed endlessly, at once hysterical and miserable. "You came for me!"Pained, Henry pursed his lips and scooped her up in his arms. "It's alright. I'm taking you home right now.""Yeah," Linda murmured, hugging his neck and pressing her cheek against his chest, shuddering endlessly. She seemed horrified, refusing to leave his embrace. And that was how Henry carried her to his car, quietly telling the chauffeur to head to Rose Garden. It was almost ten when they arrived. As Henry carried Linda inside as well, the maid heard them and came out.Bowing respectfully at the two when she saw them, she said, "Mr. Barnes, Ms. Cook. Rory's asleep.""Good," Henry replied quietly and leaned down to tell Linda tenderly, "We're home, Linda."Linda did not s

Seeing that Henry was stopping to listen, the man's eyes lit up with hope, and he quickly said, "It's the truth, Mr. Barnes—I'm not lying! She really came on to us!"That woman's acting was just too good.If they had not personally been there, even they would have doubted that the same person who came on to them was also the same person who had accused them!"It's the truth, Mr. Barnes!" the other man promptly echoed, his tone earnest as he tried to convince Henry.Regret was twisting their insides to a bunch too, as they did not have evidence—if they did, they would have shown it!They had been feeling gleeful earlier that they were doing it in a place without cameras. And now, they could not even defend themselves!Henry looked at them then.He could see that they were just stopping short of swearing it was the truth, and there was no hint of guilt in their eyes as they looked at him in turn."No!!! Get away from me!!! Please don't touch me!!! Henry!!! Henry!!!"But even as

Henry's eyes were on Tina even as he held his cigarette and answered the phone.Tina ignored him as he had clearly mentioned Linda's name to screw with her, but just as she got up, Henry's face dropped. He dropped his cigarette on her too, and she flinched in pain, losing her balance and falling again. However, Henry was busy assuring Linda endlessly as she screamed in terror on the other end. "Calm down! I'm coming right now—I'll save you! It's alright!"He did not hang up as he continued offering words of comfort, completely ignoring Tina as if she was never there. As soon as he returned to his car, he floored the gas pedal, disappearing into the night."Henry Barnes!" Tina yelled just as she got up, but her voice was drowned out by the roaring engine, and she was left standing as she watched Henry's car disappear from sight.A cold breeze blew just then, and the rustle of leaves echoed on both sides of the road.As Tina shuddered, she picked up her bag from the ground and to

John answered Tina's call almost instantly, his melodious voice asking, "Tina?""John, can you—"For her part, Tina was ready to cut straight to the chase as soon as John answered, but a large hand snatched her phone from behind before she could finish and cut off the call right away."Henry Barnes!" Tina bellowed, but he was so quick she only realized her phone had been snatched after the fact.Glowering, she promptly reached for it, but Henry simply held it over his head. There was already an eight-inch difference in their height, and with him raising his hand, Tina could not reach her phone no matter how she strained herself.Furious, she stomped her stiletto heel into his foot as hard as she could."Oof!" Henry gasped in pain and leveled a cold glare at her as he growled, "You're killing your husband!""Go to hell!" Tina spat.He had not married her for five years, and he was now calling himself her husband?!Dream on!Even as Henry buckled from the pain, Tina glowered a

Hearing that Henry was offering to make amends only reminded Tina that Linda had murdered her daughter.Tears welled up in her eyes, but she bit down to fight back the pain in her heart. Her darling Sophie had wanted this so much, but she was dead now.It was all too late—Henry's amends were pointless."Make it up to Sophie?" She scoffed in disdain even as she fought back her tears. "With what?"Henry presumed that her harshness was from all the grievances she had suffered in the past five years, and that it was only temporary, so he played along. "What would you like? Just say the word, and I'll give it to you."However, he did not offer to marry Tina. After all, she had always known her place and understood that Linda was the one he wanted to marry. It was a promise when Linda had saved him when she was six, and since then, Linda was the only one who could be his wife.Nonetheless, as Tina held Henry's gaze, she spoke with an icy tone that chilled the bone. "If I say I want

Tina's expression was icy and her tone cold. "I have nothing to say to you."She opened the door, but just as her foot touched the ground, Henry grabbed her wrist and pulled her back inside, then shut the door again."Henry Barnes!!!" Tina bellowed.Click! At the same time, the car was locked.Tina's eyes flashed in rage as she smacked Henry's hand away. "Do you have trouble understanding words?! I said there's nothing to talk about! Open the door—I'm getting off!"However, even as Tina's tone turned cold, Henry spotted a familiar figure in the rearview mirror. It was John Levine. His pretty brow creased—that man really showed up everywhere!Even as John turned toward his car, Henry floored the gas pedal and sped off.Caught off guard, Tina fell backward but did not hit anything this time, as a large hand shielded her.Tina was gasping, still in shock even as she reclined against the seat.Breathing a long sigh and holding back the expletives on the tip of her tongue, she

"Are you ever going to stop?!" Henry bellowed as he flung Irene aside, glowering as he whipped out his phone and called Andy. "Get up here. You're taking Irene to the cops."Irene's eyes widened in shock, while Tina turned away, picking up her phone from the tea table and turning to leave. She had achieved what she had set out to do, and she was not in the mood for Linda's innocent act.As she strode out, Irene was howling hysterically, "You're taking me to the cops?! Just because I hit Linda?!"Henry never answered, but that much was obvious.Irene had hurt his beloved woman as he watched—forget a cousin, as he would even hurt his own biological sister if he had one.Tina smirked as she left without looking back. She stood at the entrance, ready to hail a cab since she did not drive here.Several men stopped out just then as well.Their eyes lit up right then, as she was ridiculously pretty even without makeup. And seeing that she was alone, they hurried toward her. Tina suddenly strode past Henry and Linda and up to Irene, the culprit who had set her up five years ago, as she slapped Irene across the face. She really did not think that Irene was already that vile five years ago!Irene naturally wanted to fight back but felt Henry's glare on her and did not even dare to move, allowing Tina to keep going, slapping her repeatedly across the cheek.Tina only stopped after her slaps left Irene's face swollen, and she felt like she had expressed the spite that was accumulating inside for what Irene had done five years ago. Then, just as Tina was about to stop, Linda suddenly rushed up, shielding Irene. "That's enough, Tina! Stop! She kept it a secret because of me—blame me if you want! Don't hurt Irene anymore!"However, now that Irene had seen Linda's true colors, she did not feel grateful despite Linda's protection. She had really been stupid in the past—in fact, Linda had only come to her protection only when Tina was done! In fact, Tina was not even looking at Henry, as her eyes were locked on Irene. As for Linda, she had been on edge when Irene started spilling the beans, not expecting Irene to talk about what had happened five years ago.Her heart could stop when Irene confessed that she knew that Tina did not drug Henry. But while she thought that Irene knew she was the one who had drugged Henry, Irene finished her story, affording her a sigh of relief.-Five years ago, Henry was passionately in love with Linda, and was there any couple who never made love in that state? And yet, Henry never laid a finger on her.Linda had openly and suggestively tried to seal the deal, but nothing worked. Therefore, on their anniversary, she had someone drug Henry and offer herself as the antidote when the time was right.Even if they did it then, it would not affect Henry's opinion of her at all. With her elaborate scheme in place, she simply waited for Henry until he reached his room, so that she could c
