Jennifer had not regained consciousness when she was reeled into the emergency room. The doctor who had visited them left as soon as the nurses at the hospital started to attend to her. Frank, his father and his cousin waited outside the emergency room for any news from the medical team.
Frank's father was silently studying the reactions of his son and the other people around him. Being in the mafia for years had taught him not to trust a stranger, regardless of the situation. In addition to that, he had seen how reluctant Frank was to pick her up. And it raised questions in the old man's heart. He remained silent and chose to watch what happened, nonetheless. If his son was truly in a relationship with this girl, he would have to do some research before truly accepting her.
"So she is your girlfriend? He asked Frank, scrutinizing his son's facial expressions.
Frank on the other hand looked at his cousin, who was smirking at him, listening to their conversation. Why did he have to accompany his father everywhere? He thought, wishing that Todd wouldn't be such a nuisance. Todd had always been a headache in Frank's life. However, his father doesn't believe it. How could he believe, when Todd would put up a facade and act as though he wants the best for Frank in front of him, when in reality he wants nothing except to snatch the leadership of the mafia world, by making Frank look bad in front of his father.
There was no way that he would want to let Todd know the truth. He would certainly try to use it against him. Perhaps he would twist it so badly and Frank's father would end up believing Todd's twisted tale. He had almost succeeded a few years back when Frank naively trusted his older cousin. However, his blind trust had led him towards a trap he had laid, making his father believe that it was Frank's carelessness that had almost exposed their secrets to the police back then. It took a lot of hard work and a lot of begging from Frank, for his father to allow him to take the lead of his gang.
The incident with the police years ago was embedded in his mind, so he was still sceptical about Frank's ability in being the next Don. So he had only made him the leader for a couple of years as a trial. Frank knew that even the slightest mistake would blow his hard work away so he wasn't going to let Todd take advantage of the situation. He was going to do anything, even if it meant that he would have to pretend to be in a fake relationship.
"Yes." He confirmed, looking straight into his father's eyes. Even though his heart raced for a while when his father questioned, he remained expressionless. He knew his father was cunning, he wasn't the top mafia lord in the underworld for the past decade without a reason.
Mr Gotham narrowed his eyes and nodded. "Fine." He stated. "But remember. She better be worth it." He added.
"I actually am here because it's your mother's death anniversary. I always spend this day with you. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to meet your lover today….and like this. I want to speak to her." He said, watching his son's face the entire time.
"What is her name?" He asked.
Frank tried his best to remain neutral.
"Jenny." He answered. He had heard the maid address her by that name, so he knew he couldn't go wrong.
"Jenny….hmmm….which…."
"Excuse me, she has woken up." A nurse interrupted their conversation and Frank couldn't be more thankful. He couldn't answer all his questions at the moment. He barely knew her.
"Wait a minute, dad. I'll be back after checking on her." Frank excused himself and took brisk steps towards the room where she was kept.
Jennifer glanced at the door when she heard the lock click. She was completely disheartened that her attempt to escape had been an epic failure. The fall hadn't caused any internal damage, and she was immensely thankful for that. However, she knew her desire for freedom from being held as the mafia's prisoner was still a dream. When she saw Frank enter, her heart gripped with fear. She didn't know what to expect. At least she knew that he wouldn't murder her in the hospital. However, that didn't make the situation any easier for her. Frank was still the heartless monster, and she knew he was capable of anything.
She watched him saunter over to her bedside, her heart palpitating with each step he took. Running her tongue over her chapped lips, she gulped. All that she could do was pray that things turn out for the best.
"Jenny."
When he pronounced her name in his deep voice she felt a shudder go down her spine. This was the first time he had addressed her by name and it was awkward. She looked up, determined not to cower in fear in front of him.
"What?" She demanded in a croaky voice and winced as she spoke. She was still in pain and her speech didn't sound like how she hoped it would. The wound was rather deep and the nurse had told her that five stitches were required to cover the wound. Pain relievers were administered to her but they only relieved the agony to some extent.
"I need to talk," Frank spoke. "Actually, I want to make a deal." He said.
"Deal?" She asked, almost whispered, frowning. "Why would I make a deal with the devil himself?" She scoffed weakly, despite the pain she was enduring.
Amused by her sassiness, Frank smirked as he sat on the chair beside the bed.
"Feisty woman. Even when you are obviously at the mercy of others. You need our help right now. What would you do if I decided to kill you and your family off? You came with me as my prisoner, remember?" He chuckled.
Jennifer scowled at him the best she could, yet remained silent. He was right. She was held hostage and she had willingly come with him. When Frank saw that she was now not responding, he smirked. "Now about that deal…... I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend." He stated, making Jennifer's eyes go wide. She started to protest.
"Girlfriend? Girlfriend your foot! I'll…."
Frank was quick to cover her mouth with his large hands.
"Shhh. My father is right outside and if he hears you, I swear that I won't hesitate to kill you, and your precious maid." He threatened her and she slowly stopped struggling against him. She stared at him wordlessly when he slowly let her go.
"Like I said. I want you to pose as my girlfriend. My father and cousin shouldn't know at any cost who you are. And if you agree, I promise that I will not hurt your family. I will even forget that your father had stolen from me. I won't hold it against him." He said and Jennifer slowly relaxed.
She studied his face. His face was still void of emotions, however, his eyes now held a tint of hope in them. She didn't believe that her father would have stolen anything from him, however, his promise to leave her family alone sounded good enough for her.
"But how would I know that you aren't lying? How would I know that you wouldn't go back on your word?" She inquired silently.
"I'm not lying. What would I gain by lying? It was my cursed luck that dad had to arrive at the worst possible moment. I don't want my father to think that I've been reckless when I abducted you. That's why I have told him that you are my girlfriend. And I need you to play along." He explained.
Jennifer smirked. Oh, so he is trying to save his ass from possible trouble he might get in. She thought.
"Fine. If you promise to leave my family alone I'll play along as long as your father is here. And when he leaves, you must let me go." She paused and narrowed her eyes at him.
"If I ever find out that you lied, or had hurt them in any way, I swear I will expose your little secret." She added in a low tone.
Frank raised an eyebrow as he stared at the injured girl on the bed. This woman sure is a pain in the rear.
"Fine! This time….but if your beloved father ever tries to be smart ever again, I swear I'll chop him into pieces." He hissed at her.
Gritting her teeth she scowled at him. "He is not a thief!" She hissed back.
"That's what you think, kitten." Frank hissed back.
"Don't call me that!" She growled in between her gritted teeth.
"I'll call you whatever I want!" He responded.
Just then the door opened, after a set of knocks and both of them hastened to pretend that nothing was going on.
"We've been waiting for some time already. I believe Frank's girlfriend should know a bit about his family too."
It was Todd who spoke. Jennifer smiled genuinely at them.
"Hi. I'm Jennifer, you can call me Jenny." She said, and Frank smirked.
"I'm Todd, his cousin. And this is my uncle, Frank's dad. He never told you about us, did he?" Todd spoke and Frank held back his urge to roll his eyes.
"No, actually he did tell me." Jennifer lied.
"But he never mentioned you to us." Frank's father stated solemnly, looking at his son. Frank felt his throat tighten.
Oh shucks!
He cursed internally, as he desperately tried to think of a good answer. He wanted to say something believable. But what?
He couldn't possibly mess this up! All his efforts would be futile if he did.
Frank stood frozen on his step, desiring to say something good, yet choked to silence.
Frank hid his real emotions behind a mask of a facade, something he had mastered over the years. He had to think of something, and fast. "I was going to….but….." "He wanted to surprise you all." Jennifer cut him in, surprising him. Well, that was fast. His lips parted as he glanced in between Jennifer and his father, who remained stone cold. "Okay ...well, I'm surprised." Frank's father stated nonchalantly. "How did you fall down the stairs?" He asked. "I slipped and fell." Came the reply. "I wasn't feeling well. I guess I shouldn't have tried to walk around since I was feeling dizzy." She sighed. "And why did you get up? The doctor must have advised you to rest. You just have to inform the maids what you need and they will attend to you." Frank's father had his eyes focused on Jennifer, who didn't seem to mind his cold stare. "I don't like to order people around. I guess perhaps because I didn't g
Infuriated, Frank stomped to his room and slammed the door shut, startling Jennifer who was inside already. She had come in a few minutes earlier, however, she didn't know where to start. She didn't have any clothes with her to begin with and had been waiting for Frank to come in. However, when she saw how irritated he looked, she instantly understood that something must have bothered him. Hence, she remained silent, not wanting to anger him more than he already was."Fuck that idiot!" He cursed, disregarding Jennifer's presence. "He is such a nuisance!" He grumbled and punched the wall. He was used to punching hard surfaces like it, however, it pained his knuckles each time."Damn!" Jennifer whispered as she stared at him with widened eyes. She was being as invisible as she could, but couldn't hold back from gasping when she saw how he punched the wall.Still fuming, Frank glared at her."Shit!" He cursed when he realised
Frank grabbed her hand a little too harsh, making her yelp, and snatched what she was hiding from him. When he saw that it was nothing but a notepad and a pencil, he froze. She was hiding this notepad from him? He had kept one on the dressing table before he left early in the morning. She must have seen it while she spent the day in the room. His gaze moved from the notepad to Jennifer, who had her eyebrows knitted together as she chewed on her lower lip nervously. Still looking at her, he opened the first page to check what she had written down. He didn't expect to see a splendid sketch on it. Frowning, he stared at it. Was she an artist? He wondered. This sure looked like a professional sketch. Frank, being an admirer of art, was shocked to see such a splendid sketch on his notepad. "I….I'm so sorry. I was so bored and then I saw this notepad…..I….I couldn't help it….. and I drew on the first page…..I'm sorry…." She stammered, fi
The next morning, Frank didn't leave like he usually does. Instead, he remained at home in the room to watch her draw. At first, Jennifer said nothing and continued doing what she loved. However, when she felt that his presence was making it awkward, she glanced in his direction and saw that he was staring at her. "Don't you have work today?" She finally asked him. "Not your business, is it?" He responded nonchalantly, not wanting to show that his view on her has changed even a bit. Rolling her eyes, she shook her head and went back to do what she loved. "Whatever, Gotham." She murmured and continued to draw. She didn't care about his solemn approach. His cold stares and unfriendly gestures didn't bother her even the slightest bit. Frank stared at her. She didn't seem to mind his rude comeback. He simply wanted to show that he still didn't care about her. He didn't want to give her even the slightest hin
Frank studied her face. Her eyebrows knitted together as she glared at him. Little beads of sweat started to form on her forehead. "Look, it is going to be fine," he whispered back. "Fine? How in the world will it be fine?! All the goons will be swarming around me and I'll be like baitfish in a tank full of sharks!!!" Jennifer stressed each word as she responded, a little too loud for Frank's liking. "Shhh," Frank hushed her. "Let's go to the room. We will talk there." He told her in a hushed whisper. Jennifer's heart thudded as they walked to the first floor of the mansion, to his room. "Look, if we back off, my dad will be suspicious. He already is sceptical about our relationship, we can'
The entire ride to the store was awkwardly silent. Frank said nothing because he wasn't someone who spoke much and Jennifer too remained silent. After all, she was anxious as hell. She wordlessly followed Frank when Mike pulled in front of the store.Mike watched how Jennifer obediently followed his boss. He had been stealing glances at them during the ride from the rearview mirror, amused by the fact that Frank seemed to be looking out for the girl. She was brought to his mansion as a prisoner and was supposed to be used as bait, however, destiny had other plans. He understood why he was putting up this act in front of his father and cousin. However, he didn't have to put up the same act when they weren't around. Cackling, he drove towards the parking area of the store to wait for his boss, and his 'girl'."Welcome to Lilly's, how may I hel
Jennifer practically skipped on her way to the room. She ran upstairs and took the gown to hang on a hanger. Then she sat down with the notepad, wanting to brainstorm ideas. He had not told her a theme of the sketch he wanted, but her excitement was hard for her to contain.Tapping the tip of the pencil on her chin, she chewed on her lower lip."Maybe a serpent. Like the one I drew on the notepad." She thought out loud. However, she frowned."No….he has already seen that sketch." She pouted. She wanted her sketch to be perfect. The gown cost a fortune and since he was the one who will be providing the canvas and the paint, she wanted the painting to be worthy of all that. Which meant that she will have to outdo herself. This painting has to be the best she had ever painted.
The next day started with all of them having breakfast together once again. Jennifer noticed how Todd kept grimacing each time he stole a glance at Frank. However, she remained silent and chose not to comment on it. Frank's father was calm and collected while Frank seemed to focus on his food without uttering a word. He didn't seem to care about Todd's rude stare. Jennifer didn't mind the lack of conversation between the Gothams. An awkward silence hung in the air as they ate. The only sound that echoed in the grand dining room was the clinking of their cutlery. "So, Jenny," Todd finally spoke, disrupting the silence between them, "aren't you bored to be all by yourself the whole day? I mean….as your boyfriend, I think Frank must take better care of you. Doesn't he take you on dates or anything like that?" Todd's question seemed strange to Jennifer. She couldn't discern why he should
Jennifer admired her reflection in the mirror. A little smile was constant on her lips. She had never thought that her special day would turn out to be like this. When she grew up, she had hoped that her father would be there for her on this day. That he would walk her down the aisle, holding her hand. Yet, that was far from reality. Her father had proved himself to be nothing but a halfwit. Her wedding gown was nothing short of a masterpiece. The top was embroidered using beads and sequins. The lacy flared skirt gave the gown an elegant look. Although her neckline revealed enough of her cleavage, she was certain that no one would dare look there. No one except the man of her dreams. A long slit on the side revealed her smooth legs. She smirked as she traced the Glock that was strapped to her thigh. Carrying it with her at all times was now a norm for her.
Todd just died? But she didn't pull the trigger...then who did? Gulping, Jennifer studied the lifeless body that lay in front of her.The sight of Todd's motionless body made her gag. Todd was lying on his back, with his eyes wide open, and his face suddenly drained of colour. No signs of life were in him. It was a quick kill. She noticed that the blood was pooling underneath his head but the wound wasn't visible. Which could mean that he was shot on the back of his head. She looked around frantically and spotted Frank at the stairs. However, he wasn't holding a gun. He too was staring bewildered.Just then, Frank's father stepped forward from behind."I told you, Todd was mine to kill," he said."Dad?" Frank was shocked to see his father."I heard what Mike told you. So I followed you upstairs. Didn't you realise that I was following you?" He smirked.Frank shrugged. "I guess
Great! She heard everything!" Todd mumbled squinting at the screen. When they checked the footage, they saw Jennifer and a tall, well-built man, listening to every word they uttered."Everything is ruined! Again! And because of that damned woman!" Todd grumbled, sneering in frustration."She keeps ruining everything for me! She is such a nuisance. I should have gotten rid of her first when I had the chance!" Todd gritted his teeth."What now?" Oswald frowned as he glanced at his father."We don't waste time. We must attack now! Tonight! We must attack at once!" He stated and stood up from his seat."Quick! Call the men! Get ready to fight. We are going to finish them off and leave this place for good!" He decreed."Leaving?" Oswald frowned."Yes. Leaving. We will move to Italy and that's where we will settle down. I am done living in the states. But I'm not going to leave without teaching them
Jennifer sat in the car, with a racing heart. She was excited and anxious at the same time. She was going back home after a long time. She wondered what her nanna would say.Would she be excited to see her? Would she hug her like she always does? An involuntary smile curved her lips as she thought about her reunion with the woman she loved and respected as a mother. She knew she most probably would have to explain a lot. But one thing was certain. Her nanna would be happy to see her happy.Sighing, she glanced outside. She was as excited as a little child who was seeing the passing city lights for the first time. Life had taken an unexpected turn for her. When she was first taken as a prisoner, she had never thought that she would fall for the ruthless Don, who showed no mercy. She chuckled. Who kn
Todd went to meet Oswald. He didn't know what else to do. He couldn't possibly go anywhere that they could get their hands on. His life was, without a doubt, in danger. His uncle wouldn't spare him.He knew what would happen. They would detect the presence of cyanide and then look for him. When they don't find him, they will check the CCTV footage. What he sees on the footage will take things from bad to worse. Todd was certain that his uncle would kill him as soon as he saw him. He could no longer hide in any place he knew. His uncle would know each of his hideouts and most probably, send his men everywhere to catch him."What happened?" Frowning, Oswald asked as soon as he reached the bar Todd had asked him to go urgently. The place wasn't very popular and was located a good distance away from Frank's mansion. Todd had gone the
Frank's father sneered from time to time, his eyes glued to the screen. They were in the security room, going through the security footage of the mansion. They couldn't find Todd in the mansion. The security guards at the main gate at that time had seen him leave in his car so Frank and the others had opted to check the security footage."That insolent jerk!" Frank's father growled when he saw Todd emptying the contents of a small bottle into the bottle of wine he had taken from the kitchen cabinet. Everything happened as Jennifer had told them. Barton took the bottle from him and went to do what he was asked to. Jennifer and Frank along with Mike and other men who Frank and his father trusted the most were with them. They saw how he advanced at Jennifer and held her tight, but she managed to escape after kicking him in the crotch.
"Barton, my good man, I need a little help from you. Take this bottle. And serve Frank. Miss Jennifer had bought this for him and forgotten this bottle here in the kitchen. As you know this is his favourite brand of liquor." Todd handed the bottle to the worker. "Remember, serve this especially to my cousin." Jennifer couldn't believe what she was hearing. She hadn't bought a bottle of liquor for Frank. She couldn't understand what Todd was talking about. After the revealing of her painting, she had gone to the kitchen to look for Ron as she wanted to ask him to serve the food he had prepared. However, she couldn't find Ron. Instead, she found Barton, the worker who was supposed to be in charge of the drinks for the nig
Todd dashed up the stairs and ran towards his room. His heart frantically beat in his chest. Lentils of sweat dripped down his sideburns. He didn't know Frank was listening to his conversation. He had been extremely careful about his connection with Oswald yet it was ruined with just a phone call.He growled as he picked up a vase on the side table and threw it on the floor. The pieces of ceramics scattered on the marbles with a loud crash. Sneering angrily, he stormed towards the balcony in the room.He didn't bother about the little ceramic pieces that crushed underneath his shoes as he walked over them. He walked towards the railing and grasped the cold metal of the railing with all his might."Damn him!" He grumbled under his breath. Seething in anger, he reached out for the pack of cigarettes in his pocket. After lighting up one of them, he blew a few puffs of smoke into the atmosphere, hoping that it would calm
Days passed since Mike was told to keep an eye on Todd. He made sure that Todd didn't leave the mansion without his knowledge. He kept watching his every move discreetly. When he didn't notice anything absurd, he started to listen to his phone calls too. However, he saw nothing to be concerned about."What is the news on Todd? Did you find anything I should worry about?" Frank asked Mike on their way to the shed.Shaking his head, "no, boss. Nothing. He doesn't leave the house much. And if he leaves, it usually will be for work in the shed."Mike's reply wasn't satisfactory. Frank was certain that something was odd. They couldn't have known to attack them at that particular restaurant that night unless they were continuously spying on them or unless Todd had informed them about their whereabouts.Frank narrowed his eyes as he recalled how the masked attacker had groped her that night. He wa
