The sun had completely set, the surroundings were gloomy, and the atmosphere was really tense. Despite the fact that there was no one else in the area, it did not feel safe. It's as if, despite our solitude, someone has been keeping an eye on us. I just wanted to take a step back and go back to where I was to avoid further difficulty and to entice Laura away from my way of life. But, when I looked at Marcus and Laura, I knew I had to do something in order to survive. After all, I'm the one with the greatest requirements, and they're the ones who are assisting me. I shook my head and hurried towards the store. I dashed into the business as quickly as lightning after breaking all of the cameras; I couldn't shake my anxiousness, especially because I was unfamiliar with the location.
"Be careful," Laura cautioned as I approached towards the shop. I simply nodded and strolled in and out of the store with ease. The interior was massively lavish and elegant, and I couldn't have asked for anything more. My eyes are glittering with wonder, yet my heart is pounding with anxiety. Everything is pricey, from the glass containers to the drawers; there were jewels, excellent marbles, golds and silvers, abnormally healthy pearls, and other luxuries. I couldn't help but drool over the merchandise because I'm so pulled to it. This is my first experience with fine aristocratic items and taking them. I've stolen things before, but not such high-end items.
I immediately gathered everything I could and stuffed it into the large bag Marcus had provided. When it was full, I quickly tossed it to Marcus, who handed me another bag. He glances around from time to time to make sure no one would recognize us if anyone happened to look at what we were doing. I used about five bags before realizing I couldn't obtain any more.
"Done."
"Then let's go, quick!" Marcus signed.
I quickly exited the location, but my left knee was wounded as a result of my haste when I stumbled. What a nuisance life, I fell first before ultimately getting out. Is that why I was so jittery earlier? I've never been hurt before, and I never trip when we do operations like this. Because of my haste and anxiousness I lost balance and fell, this is my first time tumbling down.
Laura yanked me up and said, "Say, be cautious."
I just nodded and acted fast as if nothing had happened. We jumped into Marcus' car and sped away from the shop as soon as we could. Inside the car, the tension was too high, and I could sense Laura's anxiety. However, as we went away from the location, the wind increased stronger.
I let out a sigh. I could feel my sweat streaming down my face and back. I was afraid I wouldn't make it out of that place alive, I'm still sweating profusely.
"Dawn has arrived."
Laura's statement astonished me. I didn't notice the time because I was preoccupied with my task.
Marcus cursed, "Shoot!"
My heart suddenly raced in response to Marcus's whisper, and Laura was perplexed.
"Why?" I inquired cautiously, knowing that Marcus would not respond in that manner if there was no problem.
Laura inquired as well, "Is there a problem with what we stole?"
Marcus's baffling promise while driving: "No issue." He was troubled, he couldn't just say it, there's something wrong.
Laura inquired, "Eh, why do you look like that?"
I simply remained silent while listening to them.
"Another official is expected to arrive from the palace today, and I'm sure this district will be informed right away that the shop was looted earlier."
I, too, was taken aback. Everything seemed wonderful to me, and I thought everything would be fine, but it was all in my head. The three of us have a terrible vibe going on, and we're starting to become nervous. Nothing is a problem while we're in this tangle. We've seen something similar previously, but this time it's different. I'm feeling a lot different now, as if something isn't right—something bad is about to happen. What will happen if that happens?
"W—what?" Laura became agitated, and I had to tell her to calm down since I could sense her chill. "What are our options, Marcus? What's up, Verulia?"
"Hush, calm down. Just calm down okay?" I said quietly as I reached for Laura's cold hand. "Trust me, I won't abandon you."
Even though I couldn't think of anything, I started to consider what we should do. When it was required, I felt my mind fly at that time.
"Shoot!" Marcus cursed again, making my heart race. "The officials are here!" He whispered.
A number of aristocratic carriages and cars began to linger around the district as the sun rose. Early in the morning, the sound of people rushing began to dominate the neighborhood, and we had to compose ourselves as the rustles to the town center became louder. I looked to the front and noticed that we would be meeting the Palace officials' expensive vehicles.
OH CRAP!
"What's up, Verulia?" Laura asked making me more anxious. She's sweating profusely despite the coldness of the dawn. I was even more concerned for Laura, who couldn't possibly be implicated in anything.
"Just relax, okay? Everything will be OK," I said with a smile, and the terrified Laura began to relax as a result.
I called, "Marcus?"
"Verulia..." Marcus replied as soon as he turned to me.
"Stop the car," I declared. "Let's not meet them; we need to hide."
"When the sun rises, they will notice us more, and there will be more people in the center, especially now that the Officers have arrived!" Marcus argued.
"Just let them pass, then we'll escape swiftly; we have no idea what will happen to us if we meet even one of them; we're dummies for them," I said, "but if we halt, Marcus, we can conceal first and leave soon after them."
Marcus sighed in defeat as Laura remained silent. Marcus came to a full halt in his car. He appears to be paying attention to what I'm trying to say. Except for Marcus, who stayed in his car, we exited. He hid the car on the side of a major mall we passed, and we all ran down to hide. Laura and I exited the vehicle and hid at the back of a large garbage can. Because the palace officials were approaching, Marcus signaled for us to remain in our hide. And I was remorseful as the crowd erupted from the center to embrace the officers. When the palace comes to visit, District 2 is ecstatic; the place becomes busy as they pull an event to welcome them. I had an uneasy feeling that if we keep hiding, they would find us.
"Get out," I yelled at Laura.
"What?" she exclaimed, perplexed.
"We will be joining the people of this district. We'll act as if we're residents from here. If we hide here they will think of us as suspicious, let's join and pretend to be one of them." I said and immediately come out of our hiding place.
Although the sun had not yet fully risen, Laura and I were quickly becoming engulfed in the crowd. We came to a halt in the middle of the officers' meeting, which appeared to have something big to announce in the second district, given how crowded the area was.
"Just calm down," I told Laura, who was becoming agitated once more. "Let's get out and go straight to Marcus' car, okay?"
She simply responded with a nod. She isn't deserving of this kind of environment. If I had to pick right now, I would always put Laura's safety ahead of my own. I changed my appearance, as did Laura, and shook off the dust that had accumulated on my clothing. I was already aware of the nagging discomfort in my knee, but I chose to ignore it. We walked up to Marcus' car and began strolling carefully. Laura's presence suddenly vanished inside my radius as I was ready to step into his car.
"L—laura?" I asked as I turned around.
Shoot! It was tough for her to get to where I was because she was surrounded by people.
Marcus' note reads, "When you bring her back, we won't have time."
I returned my gaze to Laura. All I know is that I can't leave her alone.
"Leave me, but don't leave her," I said to Marcus as I pulled Laura over in his car. I reached out and grabbed her hands. I tried to drag her away from the mob, but I was as crowded, so we just kept trying to get out of there. The crowd gone wilder, and it was too late for me to realize that the officials have officially arrived.
"District two's loving people!" When a Palace official spoke, the crowd erupted in applause. This was Duke Leo's voice, and it was clear that he was at the pinnacle of his authority. I know it's difficult to battle him, just hearing of his voice tells the difference between us, his authority and my place, even though I haven't seen his position yet.
"Verulia!" Laura exclaimed as she approached me. "Wait, Verulia!" she exclaimed.
I opened my eyes and blinked. I need to concentrate on what we're doing, or we'll be doomed. "Let's go..." I whispered, tightening my grip on her.
We took another step closer to Marcus' car, but Duke Leo's revelation seemed to have piqued my curiosity.
"At the Eclipse, the search for the twelve stones will begin."
Eclipse? The Search? What? The eclipse will occur the day after tomorrow, which means the search for the Twelve Stones will begin the next day.
"I'm warning everyone: the search will be perilous and risky, but everyone who wants to fulfill their hopes and desires should simply find the stones, and their request will be accomplished." When the Duke said this, the people in the second district screamed again and again jovially.
"Verulia, come on."
I sighed as I returned my attention to Laura, who was now dragging me towards Marcus' car. The more individuals there are, the more difficult it is for everyone to communicate so I couldn't hear Laura properly anymore as I am preoccupied by the Duke's announcement as well.
"Sorry..." Laura almost let me go when a guard stopped me. My heartbeat had sped up and I was almost out of breath when I returned the guard's stare. I've been surrounded. If I leave my post, Laura and I will both be apprehended at the same moment. Our antics seemed to pique the guard's interest.
"But we just need specific people for the search. We need to bring your young people to the Palace. Whether you like it or not, we will bring your young people to the palace. Anyone who passes the challenge will be joining the team for the search. " The Duke said meaningfully that changed other people’s decision including mine.
"Someone got in!" We all turned to the man running while shouting.
I swallowed, "W-what?"
"The shop! The jewelry shop is looted! Someone has barged in to steal! We're in danger, someone has barged in! Thieves! Thieves!"
Everyone became terrified and panicked. I turned to Laura, who had turned pale as well. Marcus beckoned for us to hurry up the travel in his car, and I turned to him. I waited for the guard to release me and took advantage of the opportunity to get to Laura. The environment grew hectic, and we were nearly trampled by parents shielding their children. Others were escaping, but there were enough guards to keep everyone, including us, from fleeing. Despite the hubbub, the guards did not allow the people to escape and become stranded due to the important message.
"Thieves! There are thieves in this district! They may be lingering among us now. Thieves! The shop was thoroughly wrecked!"
What?
My nervousness went up to my head. They usually blame the inhabitants of the first district when something unpleasant happens in the second district. Worse, everyone in the second district believes we're horrible and that we're deserving to die. So, aside from the fact that they don't want us, they are terrified by the news that we are criminals. And they always point the finger at us first when something bad happens in the second district. Which is a complete and utter abomination.
"A cadaver!"
That announcement was like a bomb dropped right before my eyes, right in front of us. Laura almost collapsed but she managed to compose herself. I began shaking as well but I managed to retain my composure. What did the man just said? A cadaver?
"A cadaver has been found! Someone is dead! Someone is dead!"
Fudge? Many people became even more perplexed. I became engrossed in my senses as I attempted to calm myself down. We're robbers, not killers. I know we're awful people because we're thieves, but we can't do anything more than stealing. We will never be able to kill, however. We are not assassins. I am not a serial killer.
Laura exclaimed, "V-Verulia!" as I let go of her hands for a little second.
She was apprehended by a guard!
"Leave me alone! Verulia! Marcus! Please assist me!" Laura screamed.
Marcus waited outside his mobile, unsure of what he would do to assist Laura. He's far away so he couldn't reach our position immediately. People would be calling me stupid for going back when I could just escape, but I'm Laura's best friend, and she's in desperate need of my assistance right now, so I dashed towards the guard to liberate Laura without hesitation. Even so, I had to force my way through the mob to reclaim Laura's hand.
I yelled at the guard, "Let off of her!" and hit him in the face. When I saw his nose bleed, I let out a sigh of relief, and I took advantage of the opportunity to take Laura's hand and urge her into the car.
When the guard I had punched grabbed me, I exclaimed, "Shoot!"
"You son of a b*tch!" it yelled cheaply as he snatched me from Laura's grip. For this freaking sentry, do I appear like a he?
"Verulia!" Laura said as I struggled to my feet after being yanked by the guard.
The environment is in shambles. And crap, a palace sentry apprehended me. I'm doomed.
"Calm down, people of the 2nd District! Everything will be OK, we'll be fine, and we'll locate those individuals. Wicked people! They deserve death!" said the Duke, slapping me hard in my mind; recently, no one had been listening to him, but with those words, the people roared again in unison. They agreed with the Duke's statement. We have earned our death. What the hell are these people? They're worse than us, declaring death to persons they have abandoned. Had they not ignored our situation we wouldn't be stealing like this for our dear lives. Honestly, our reasons will never justify what we're doing and what we have done; robbing, but there would be a lot of difference if only they minded us. We wouldn't have gone this far just to survive, if only we were given opportunities like them, we wouldn't be doing such things. The folks who had before been silent made a sound as though the Duke had delivered an excellent speech. They had been angry before because the guards had forced the
My hands were shaking as I slowly opened the box. My mind was in haze, I can't believe what's happening. I know I'm like a freak, maybe a total freak since I have an odd ability, but witnessing someone do the same odds as mine gives me shivers and uncomfortable feeling. Is this how my friends reacted when they first witnessed my ability? I say, it's freaking astonishing. I can't believe. When I opened the box and came out, the face of an old woman smiling was exposed. My heart thumped loud, she's smiling— should I take this a threat or just a simple greetings from her? I know something's up. She would not react like this if nothing's a problem. I'm in jittery, I want to run away but I'm scared I just get cornered and accused of anything. I need to be careful, I still have to come back home."What are you doing? And why are you hiding there, hija?" She asked. I looked away, I still do not know her but I knew I couldn't lie at the moment, not to her atleast. So I did not answer."You kn
My steps into the labyrinth were heavy. I still wondered if I would continue or not. By the time I turned around, I felt like the guard would pull out his gun and fire at me. So I slowly entered the maze, and I was almost stunned as the place grew darker. I feel like I’m somewhere else. I feel like I’m not in the palace anymore. I feel like I’m not alone in using the ability I have. Now I totally realize I’m not the only one with a unique ability in this kingdom. And I'd like to think that all of this is not true! I want to think that this is just a dream, but this isn't!This is real!I'm in deep trouble. I've entered a place I don't know where in the world it's located. The surroundings are dark; the bushes and stems of dancing trees are thick. The trees are not just ordinary; they're very large and the leaves are thick.I heard a thundering roar. I was taken aback. I can't be wrong; that sounds like a fierce lion! On my left are wild beasts on the ground, I could totally feel it. G
I fought back.I resurrected my abilities using the last strength in my body. As it surged all over my body, I felt my senses awaken. Since I was so busy, the sensation was a little different, like if a jolt connected my cells and spread throughout my body. My breathing grew quick because I couldn't control it. I attempted to identify it sooner since the agony of having to force my ability to function in an unexpected situation is all over me. My orbs caught the snake's menacing crimson gaze. The snake's spheres darkened as my eyes glowed. The scarlet color exuded strength, as if it had developed an inferiority complex as soon as the bright colors of my eyes challenged it to a staring contest. Despite the fact that I was out of breath owing to the struggle, I resisted the snake's hypnosis and kept my sight fixed on the snake.I've heard of a deadly snake that kills by staring, and I believe I've met the legendary beast. I would have already been a cadaver on the ground if I hadn't acq
The sound of snoring around me jolted me awake. My ability appears to have resurfaced. I was annoyed by their snores since they were excessively loud. My body continues to ache, even though the discomfort has diminished in comparison to before. I was finally able to breathe normally. I flinched when memories popped into my head out of nowhere, and the worst part is that the memory that just emerged in my head was the one that had previously caused me grief. It was after he touched my injuries that I passed out. My huge bruises began to hurt all of a sudden. I clenched my teeth and struggled to keep my balance. Apart from feeling sick and weak, I can't do anything dumb right now because I'm not at home to do what I want.My eyes gradually opened. It was typical for me to squint as my vision adjusted to the surroundings. When I observed two women sleeping at the foot of my bed and two males gaping while sleeping on the wide sofa, I frowned and rolled my eyes. It appears that the man who
Everything is different now.EACH AND EVERYTHING.I no longer believe I am the only one with a special talent. The fact that the Kingdom of the Eufrata was a magical place gradually engulfed me. In truth, I am one of those who belongs to the basic users. I am one of the weakests. All I have are my acute perceptions. That’s it, I can’t do what the folks in front of me can do. I haven’t even fully discovered my skills, and even more so I haven’t been able to control them adequately to use them more correctly. In this magnificent Palace with Elites in front of me, I'm a piece of trash.I might be thinking like this because perhaps I grew up with this kind of view. We were treated like trash, so it's becoming normal to me to call myself such especially since I am amidst golds now. The echelons walked out of the room as soon as I recovered. I've heard they'd prepare for the evening since the search is coming. Perhaps it's what makes them busy."Manang Omeng will take care of you now, we'll
I took a walk down the dark hallway of the palace. I need to find the Prince and the youth rank; the group. I didn't change my clothes, I just walked. I don't care, in the First District we don't have a problem even if our clothes are torn, who am I to be choosy now? I have no right to this luxurious place in the first place. So whether I walk around wearing a rug-- it doesn't matter to me. I also tried to find Manang Omeng, I went to her room but she was not there. She seemed angry with me when I decided to join the group. I immediately felt that she was worried about me. And I'm glad to think that, even if it's just a thought for me, it's so sweet to know that someone is worried about you."Manang Omeng ..." I called softly when I went to the place with many books."Oh!""F*ckk--" We were both surprised by the person I met. I immediately bowed in respect even though I had not yet seen who it was."What are you doing here?"I looked up. My eyes dilated in shock. Her gorgeous fierce l
I made a cautious step towards the gathering. That was such a stressful environment that I almost passed out. How do they keep their calm under such duress? I might have blurted out my eyeballs and saliva if I had been in that state. But the two Princes were unfazed. There was tension, and it was palpable, but they stood as if nothing was wrong. And it astounds me! When tensions between men rise in the first district, expect a riot within seconds. How am I able to spend a day with these individuals who are actually aristocrats?Prince Zavan was ultimately successful in capturing me.Corinthians was taken aback when I couldn't settle down and asked, "What's your problem?"I gave her my full attention. "I— I don't have anything," I murmured hesitantly, although it would be difficult for me if I didn't.Corinthians took a moment to examine my entire body. They're all dressed in black suits, which I'm convinced are bulletproof due to their tough appearance. To protect their feet, they are
Zalistaír Vandross Magnaté CaésarWe only have a few days left before the search, and my team is a whole mess. I am somehow worried because Zandrus' group is well set up while my group is in trouble. We sent the officials to the districts to get someone to help us, but they haven't arrived yet, which is why my group is still confused."Prince, we need to talk to you." Greyson suddenly entered Princess Zavannah's room, which I was in. I nodded and planted a kiss on Zavannah's forehead before leaving. There isn't a day that I don't visit her; it's been years since she fell asleep after the fall of Luciano Ferrero. I was still young then, so I don't know what really happened. There was chaos in the palace; the brave Ferrero died, and my brother never woke up again. Now we only have the stones as our hope—to wake the princess, to free the kingdom from crisis, and for me to get the throne. We have arrived at the old haunted storage room; the group is already there except for Chrysler, for
Chapter 59I still remember a saying from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."A year ago, I was a hopeless and lifeless person. It was so hard for me to live. The life I had was not ordinary, and everyone saw that. Since I was young, I used to be alone. Until Marcus and Laura came, they were the only ones who made friends with me—no one else. I thought my life would be forever a mess; I can't see any path, so I don't know where I'm going. Until something happened, which led the way for me to become stronger, braver, fiercer, bolder, and more dauntless. The search happened; it turned out to be the search for the beryl and the search for me, and I left a trail. I realized that life is not about what will happen to you but what you do that will happen to you. We choose, we determine, and we live our own destiny. I was the negative yet brave girl, so my life was also negative. I was lost in an unknown place where I
CHAPTER 58A MONTH HAD PASSED. The houses of the paupers were built and established. I have no news from the palace either. Maybe everyone has been busy because of their duties. It's funny; people didn't laugh at me in the first district. They chose me as their mayor, but they call me commander instead. Until I played it. I have been in charge of the first district, and the place they used to trample on has been settled. The first and second districts became good friends; the barriers between neighboring areas are gone. But the status is still not lost; the elite and paupers still can't live together. Maybe there is nothing I can do there, but at least the friendship between the districts will grow. There are no more poor people in the Euphrates; everyone has their own place to live, including us."Mr. Rody, how is your garden?" I shouted at the farmer."Good day, commander! The rice fields are fine; this Elmer has grown his corn!""You can visit there, Commander! Don't worry, the cor
CHAPTER 57What I did was spread fast in the first district. That's why I was surprised when I was greeted by the warm music of the poor people there. All the sentries I passed at each gate saluted me. Those in the second district couldn't be found; they just silently watched me pass by their place.I don't know who made the announcement, but far away I heard loud shouts, clapping, the sound of trumpets, and the beating of drums. I smiled when I saw the people on the streets; the palace moved quickly because someone was already building houses there for the people. They fulfilled their promises. A poor man grabbed me from the carriage and put me on his back; then they jumped down and carried me. These people, I love it! I feel like I've won the lottery or an election; there's nothing more fun than what I feel when I see those who used to be sad on the streets now having fun because everyone has a house."FOR VELURIYA!""FOR VELURIYA!"I burst out laughing. That's what they call my nam
CHAPTER 56All of them were speechless because of what I said."You are selfless, as ever." The Queen's voice prevailed in the room we were in. Her footsteps echoed as she made her way to my seat. The upper echelons, including the princess, gave way for the queen to reach me. "Can't you change your mind?" she asked.I shook my head, my tears falling spontaneously. If it had been possible to rush, I would have done it, but I understand that his decision to forget me and Zavan is for everyone as well."You want to use your stone for the first district?"I nodded. She sighed, "You can hope. We'll work hard to give the homeless people a shelter."I felt happy because those on the streets, including us, would finally have a place to live. I will not stay in the palace; I will go back to Lola and Laura. I will try to forget everything, just like they tried to forget me and Zavan."Everyone in the first district will live happily again," said the Queen. "Maximus said that the people there li
CHAPTER 55The prince is recovering in his room as the upper echelons, including myself, are summoned for our requests. The prince was so weak, he was lifeless. Until now, my tears have not stopped pouring. How is this all happening to us? What did I do wrong that I deserve to suffer this much?I was never a survivor of happiness or love. What exactly is wrong with me? I was deprived of meeting my real family; they were erased from my memory. It was only Manang Omeng who removed my memories, but I still had a hard time remembering them. What about the prince? He was surrounded by elders, and no chant could break the spell they put on him.I'm broken; the prince had forgotten about me. I can't even stand properly because of my weakness, so I remained seated while facing the void. I couldn't think clearly, and after the incident, I didn't speak anymore. Life is so cruel; why does life seem so angry with me? Am I that bad to suffer like this?"Beryl..." Corinthians called. I almost forgo
CHAPTER 54"WHO ARE YOU?"I frowned because of Zavan's question to me. I slapped his arm and said, "You're not funny." I forced a laugh as I had said those words. He laughed at me and faced me again: "I'm not kidding, who are you?"I stopped laughing. My knees shook when I noticed that I was slowly disappearing. It's not Zavan who's missing, but me. What is it?"Za-Zavan?" I asked nervously."Who are you?" he asked again. His expression was blank, and my heart was breaking because of what was happening."Zavan!" I called because I was disappearing and he was becoming a blur in my sight. "NO!"The scream slowly entered my brain. Zavan's voice sounded like he was struggling. What was happening was very blurry, and after I screamed, I heard his voice.I heard a loud bang that woke me from my sleep. "Oh sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t!" It was a nightmare! I had a nightmare! It rattled outside again. I quickly got up, stood up, and hid in the back of my room. I made sure I was awake because maybe this w
CHAPTER 53I was supposed to be immune to the pain; I shouldn't feel anything anymore, so I don't know how I felt the prince's presence at that time."Hush, you'll be fine, precious."That was the only thing I was holding on to at that time—that I would be safe in his arms despite the hardships I was going through."How dare you, Maximus?" said Zavan. "I've heard everything, and you will pay for it."I seem to have been revived by hope. They came before my death; at least it wasn't too late. I have done justice to my father as well as my mother. I protected the Euphrates from the hands of Maximus, and I still triumphed in spite of everything. It's not too bad to die to end all this; I'm having too much trouble... I can't take it anymore."Don't you dare die, Beryl? It is a command," whispered Zavan.I don't even know what happened next. I only felt two drops of hot tears on my cheeks and a long kiss on my lips before I finally took my breath away."I love you..."I feel that someone i
CHAPTER 52"Because you are Lucianno Ferrero's daughter,"What Maximus said ran through my mind over and over again. I tried to understand everything; I was about to explode, not only my body but also my brain."You're an animal!" I screamed and lost my mind. "You have no shame! What have you done to my father?""Do you want to know the true story of your life? I know your story better than you, Ferrero." He said.I cried again while crawling on the floor. Is this as hard as most people say it is? It's not only my body that feels pain but also my mood, and I think that's the most painful of all. I tried to cry while trying to fight the pain. I can't breathe anymore; my problem is increasing with every word Maximus utters. I gasped for air, but I sucked nothing. I'm just forcing myself to breathe because if I give up, I won't be able to live anymore."One night, a girl was born." Maximus began that the more I tortured, I vomited blood again, more this time. "There was no more fun that
