I drove for hours to get to my childhood home. Our suburban home was enormous and in a pleasant area, Wneebeach Springs. My younger sister Mia still lived there with Mom. I probably would have never left if it weren’t for my job in the city.

The city of Bamcaster was as big as my dreams. My ultimate goal was to make it as a full-time fiction writer. I would have ditched an undergraduate program in creative writing to pursue my dreams earlier if it weren’t for my dad. He had pushed me to get a professional degree. He had promised me to take care of all my financial needs for as long as it took to achieve my dream.

My dad was a dreamer. He didn’t believe in letting any of his loved one’s dreams die.

I didn't plan on burdening him for years while I struggled as a writer, but it was nice to know I could rely on someone who truly believed in me.

A tear rolled down my cheek, standing at the door of my late father’s home. He was my rock, and what I wouldn’t give to have him back in my life.

The door opened suddenly, and I wiped the tears off my face with a sleeve. It was my sister Mia.

“Cassidy!” Mia hugged me. “I am so glad you’re here.

I hugged her back. “It’s nice seeing you, too.”

I pushed her back to take a good at her. There was a sizeable scratch mark on her freckled cheek. A dark bruise was slightly peaking through her bangs. The demons haunting her were becoming more aggressive with time. Her pretty blonde hair, dark expressive eyes, and cute face couldn’t hide the life being sucked out of her by those evil leeches. Even her body looked a lot frailer than before.

“Mia, are they hurting you more?” I asked.

Mia put her hand on her forehead. “It’s nothing. Don’t worry. Mom has a plan. Come inside now.”

I entered the house to find my Mom dancing towards me with her arms spread in the air. She squeezed me in a long hug. “Oh, my baby. I have missed you so much. You made it before your brother.”

“I missed you too, Mom, but getting here before Jack isn't an achievement. He is always late,” I said.

“Yes, a hospital is the first home to the doctors. He already texted me saying he would arrive tomorrow,” said Mom.

The last time I saw Mom, she was distraught. Only words of fear, sadness, anxiety, and danger would come out of her mouth. I wonder what changed in a few days to put some hope back in her life.

“Mom, I want to know what changed?” I asked. “What is your plan?”

“Come and sit, love,” said Mom, directing me to the spacious living room.

As we settled on the sofa, I patiently awaited my mother to reveal every word of her master plan.

“Mia, would you be a darling and bring something to drink for your sister?” My mom said to my sister.

“Mom. Speak now. I want to know,” I said.

“I have found the exact location of your aunt. She is living in her husband’s manor with him in a small town. Her satanist lover is the mayor there,” said my mother.

“And? How are you planning to get them in prison?” I asked.

“I have some dirt on them. A few residents of their town are willing to sell them out as long as we keep their identities secret,” Mom answered enthusiastically.

“What dirt? Isn’t it possible that those residents are trying to defame them with lies?” I asked.

“Cassidy!” Mom exclaimed. “Do you think I am saying all that only based on a few strangers? Well, if it helps, your father was the one who learned about his sister’s illegal businesses through a private investigator. He never found much evidence that could be useful in court, but now someone is ready to speak about it.”

“How did you talk to those people? Did you visit that town?” I asked.

“No, I contacted them online. I joined their secret F******k group,” she answered.

“Okay,” I said.

“What? Are you doubting me now? I know your father was the one you trusted more, but I am not an enemy of the family, either. What else can we do, Cassidy? We can only stop those voodoo killers by putting them in jail. It’s the only way. I have tried everything spiritual or religion-related. Tell me what else we can do?” Mom’s positive energy shifted into a chaotic rage.

Mom was right. Not even the Incubus could help us get rid of our Satanist relatives. Her plan made more sense than mine.

“I am not doubting you, Mom,” I began, “I am scared for our family. Everything feels like a trap. I want us to be out of this mess before….”

“Don’t say it, love,” Mom cut me off. “We’ll all be alright. God is on our side. Satan is powerless before him.”

Mom sat next to me and took my hands in hers. We're all headed there tomorrow to speak with those individuals. It’ll all end soon.”

“Tomorrow?” I jumped. “You didn’t tell me before coming here. I had some important plans for tomorrow.”

“What plans? What is more important than your family to you?” Mom asked.

I lowered my head. “Nothing. I’ll move those plans to another weekend. Don’t worry about it.”

The corners of Mom’s mouth lifted. “If those plans don’t include a mystery man, I might have something here to help you take your mind off the stressful events.”

I raised an eyebrow. “What is that?”

“Mason is back in town. He came asking about you a few days ago. And from what I know, he is very much single.”

“What!” My face lit up. I couldn’t believe it. Mason Rivera was back, and he specifically came asking for me!

Who was he? The question should be, what wasn’t he?

He was my high school crush and the most perfect guy ever.

His popularity through all four years of school was something else. He was the perfect blend of all the good qualities a teenage girl could ask for. That boy was nerdy enough to get good grades and had the body of a jock.

One quality that attracted me to him the most was his kind nature. He wasn’t a jerk to anyone and cared deeply about others.

He and I were good friends, but he always had a girlfriend. It was mostly my fault, as I was too shy and the other girls weren’t.

“Cassidy, what are you doing? You should call that boy right away,” said Mom.

“Uh, I am not sure if I have his number anymore,” I said, pretending to look at my phone. It was a white lie to not look desperate before Mom and Mia. I would never delete his number.

“You should look,” said Mom. “He requested me to tell you to call him. His old number is still active.”

“Mom! You keep revealing new information to me with each passing moment. Did he say anything else about me?” I asked.

“He asked me how you were doing and where you are,” said Mom.

I couldn’t help but smile. He was definitely taking a romantic interest in me.

My eager hands unlocked my phone to dial his number. Just as I was about to hit the call button, a message from Elaine popped up.

 Elaine’s text:

Cassidy, I think somewhere past 5 in the evening works for me tomorrow. Mike and I had plans, but it’s best not to delay the seance. After initial contact, it is never a good idea to hang a sex spirit.

I put my phone away from mom’s prying eyes.

“Uh, I also have a message from work. I better go upstairs to call my boss, and then I can call Mason afterward,” I said.

Mom gave me the green light, and I hurried upstairs.

In my childhood room, the furniture was all still in place, but I had put all my stuff in boxes and placed them in the attic. I didn’t want my stuff to collect dust, as no one had the energy to clean it properly after Dad’s passing.

“Hey Elaine,” I got on a call with her once I was in my old bedroom. "I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with me. You shouldn’t cancel your plan with Mike tomorrow. Actually, Mom needs me, and I’ll be at her place for the entire weekend. We can hold the seance on some other day, can’t we?”

“I understand your family needs you for now, but you really shouldn’t delay it further. It can cause problems for you,” Elaine replied.

Isn't the plan to sign the contract with the spirit? If it hasn't been signed yet, why would there be a problem? Could the consequences of a delay be fatal? If not, I can endure anything else.”

“Cassidy!” I heard my name from behind.

I looked at the door and saw Mom fuming with anger. “Who the hell are you talking to?” she yelled.

Oh boy, oh boy, I was in big trouble.

“Mom, what are you doing here?” I said after ending the call. She stormed toward me and snatched the phone from my hands. “Cassidy?” Mom tried to open my phone, but a code was protecting it. “How could you! It’s not okay to have extreme mood shifts within minutes.“No, Mom,“ I said, taking my phone back. “Elaine is a friend, and she only practices white magic.”“White magic is Devil’s worship in disguise. It’s unholy and unclean. Magic destroys lives and souls just like it did to our family,” said Mom. She was not ready to calm down or listen.“Okay, Mom,” I said, tossing my phone onto the bed. “Relax.”Mom grabbed me by the arms. “Promise me, Cassidy. Say that you would never go near any magic or witches. You must promise me.”Mom’s outrage was scaring m

Back home, I was lying in bed thinking about the strange incident that occurred at the end of our date. I had to take Mason to the hospital as he complained about a burning sensation in his right arm. I thought he had a low threshold for pain until the nurse rolled up his sleeve, revealing a big, fresh burn mark. The doctor kept asking him how he got a second-degree burn, but he swore it wasn’t there before his fall on the street. It was bizarre. “Someone pushed me. My arm is burning.” His words spun in my head. Who pushed him? There was no one around. There wasn’t even a bush or tree around us for a person to hide.Mason went home, concluding he must have lost his balance and fell, but what about the mark? How could he have burnt himself with just a fall on concrete?Elaine’s warning was the only rational explanation for it. It must be a disturbance that I, as the summoner, was facing.I had already sent a text to Elaine explaining the whole incident. She and Mike must have been fed

I threw all the bloodstained clothes in the washer immediately. No matter what I did or used, the blood wouldn’t come out. I washed them multiple times before breaking into tears on the laundry room floor. My aunt had struck again. Her prey was Mom now! I was not going to let her take another parent from me. I decided to burn all her bloodstained clothes. But I need to talk to my siblings first.I wrapped the sinister doll in a cloth and put it in a bag to take to the hospital.“See this,” I said to my siblings, showing them the doll in Mom’s private hospital room. “Mom is not sick. Our aunt wants to end her!”“I’ll call a priest,” said Derrick, leaving the room.“What would we do now? A priest can’t break a spell. We’ll lose Mom.” Mia began sobbing uncontrollably.Despite my wet eyes and panicked heart, I wrapped my arms around her to comfort her. “I won’t let anything happen to our mother. If only magic can break magic, I have a plan.”I continued to tell her about Elaine, sex spir

The night was the hardest. Elaine and Becky had left after inquiring about Mom’s health and the doll a little more. I tossed and turned in bed. Too many questions were spinning in my head. What would I say to Mason? Was my incubus still watching me from the shadows? Would we share another steamy session that night? I was not in the mood for anything. My siblings had informed me that Mom was still unconscious. Nothing was wrong with her body. The doctors called it a case of an unexplained coma. My tensed body was ready to put out if the spirit asked for it. All I cared about and wished was for Mom to regain consciousness. Waiting for something to happen, I dozed off. The annoying sound of my blaring alarm woke me up. My hands turned it off, accidentally knocking it down. I sat up on my bed, rubbing on my heavy head. My body felt sore and unrested. I believed it to be a quick nap when my eyes noticed the daylight peeking through my curtains. “Shit!” I said, picking up the alarm cloc

He was my Incubus, Desmond. It was him. Damn, he was gorgeous! He still had me trapped between his arms against the wall. His intense gaze was making me weak in the knees. The gold in his eyes was glittering. I had never seen hazel eyes reflect light like that. It was like staring into another planet—one of desire and passion. “Want me to jog your memory more?” He asked in a seductive whisper. As close as his face was to me, it was torture. I could feel his hot breath on me. He was no ordinary man. Everything about him was turning me on. He breathed down my neck, and I surrendered a little. My body was sensitive to him and him only. Not even Mason could make me aroused like that. The memories of my first time with Desmond came before me. I could see it in my head and feel it in my private parts. Once his lips brushed against my lips again, it was game over for me. I grabbed his chiseled face and sucked that gorgeous mouth of his. He responded enthusiastically and turned it into an

I was in Desmond’s hefty arms before my brain could contemplate the situation. He carried me to my bedroom and laid me on the bed like a bride. His face hovered close to my face, gazing intently into my eyes. The power of his eyes was something else. It was like staring into two multi-chrome suns, holding the power to blind your logical thinking instead of the eyes. His pink lips were inching toward my lips. Before they could touch, I put a hand between our mouths and pushed him back. “Get away from me!” I pushed harder. He stepped away and raised his hands in the air. “Just trying to help you. I think you fell for something at the door.” He winked at me like the little seductive devil he was.“Move away from me more. Your back must touch the door. I don’t want you anywhere near me,” I commanded, covering my eyes with one hand. There must be some magic in his eyes that he was using to hypnotize me. I was not driven by lust, especially not for some douche who had hurt my friend Mason

I watched the rain pour from Becky’s front-row passenger seat. She had picked me up after work on my request. We were parked on the street close to a store. The lack of sleep I had been experiencing for several nights was taking its toll on my mental health. A lot was going on in my head. It was spine-tingling to think that I could lose Mom in a week. How could someone be so heartless? Also, Desmond’s face kept flashing before my eyes. The way he spoke and behaved was confusing. His character was still a mystery to me. For multiple reasons, I didn’t say a word about him presenting himself as more than a non-solid ghostly apparition to me. The embarrassment of getting sexual with him out of lust was one of them. However, I also wished to give him a chance to prove himself. If Mom didn’t get better by midnight, I decided to expose that secret to Elaine.According to Mia’s latest update, Mom was still in a coma. “Your Mom would wake up soon, Cass. I know,” Becky comforted me from the

We sat in the waiting room while the doctors ran some final tests on Mom. I finger-combed my strawberry-blonde hair. Without makeup, bags under my eyes, and hair in disarray, I looked like a hot mess. Desmond might cancel our contract if he saw me in that condition. Other matters aside, I at least owed him an apology for treating him too harshly. It was generous of him to bring Mom back to health when I refused to provide what he wanted.I scanned my environment and found Becky missing. “Hey, where did Becky go?” I said to Mia.“She went to her car to grab a spare shirt or something. I think she spilled something on her clothes,” Mia informed me.“Okay,” I said, putting my fingers in my hair again.“You are brave, Cass. Among us three siblings, you’re the one who did something to save Mom. I’ll never forget the sacrifice you made for our family,” Mia remarked. Her thankfulness melted my heart. It was nice to be acknowledged by someone.I hugged my sister. “Thanks. Your words mean a l

Two months had gone by since the war at Voocrod. With Jane and Benedict out of our lives, things were back to normal, mostly. The loss of our father was irrevocable, but we were grateful to have each other. Mom’s emotions had gotten under control, and she was slowly returning to her old self. Desmond was now her favorite person in the world. She could barely have a family dinner without him. It made me so happy to see their unique bond.Mia was doing well, too. Her scars had healed, and she had met a wonderful guy a month ago. Things were going pretty well. Her new boyfriend, Jack, had become Mom’s second favorite, so we expected a lot from that relationship.Derrick’s life had changed drastically as well. He now believed in magic and demons and supported my relationship with Desmond. What shocked us the most was when he and Becky announced they were officially dating. Good for Becky! She was a sweetheart who had always done so much to help me and my family. I couldn’t wait to have h

“Help, help!” I threw my fists at the window panically. In the building’s empty parking lot, there was no one to hear my distress-filled screams. I tried the door handle again, but it wouldn’t budge.Benedict’s demons had me cornered. Nothing was off limits for them. The fact that Alistair was on the enemy’s side was a greater shock than finding Desmond’s truth. I believed Xolmon because he acted so normal. I should have known better. Why did I agree to meet him, knowing very well that demons could look and behave normally?“Save the screaming for when we torture you, girl,” Hepzibah, the demoness, taunted. Her sharp claws gripped my shoulders, pulling me out of my seat. I struggled and shrieked. Even though it was pointless, I called Desmond’s name. The monster of my nightmares had caught me. Who would save me now? He was the only one I trusted after God.As I was kicking my feet, everything became a blur. I could hear the demons snickering at me. It all faded slowly. I had passed ou

My heart throbbed with the clock’s second needle. It was around midnight. Desmond had left fifteen minutes ago for Voocrod, leaving me and my family at Becky’s apartment. The much-awaited final war had begun. I had begged him to take me with him, but he said it was too dangerous. “Humans suffer the most during spirit wars, Cass,” Desmond had said. “Fiends will not hesitate to spill innocent blood. Violence is entertainment for them. What I fear the most is them taking you hostage to hurt me. Your love is my strength and my weakness. It doesn’t matter how close we are to winning the war. I would drop everything and sacrifice myself to save you.”Now, I was forced to wait without updates. Desmond wasn’t the only one who cared. I cared about his safety, too. Resting on Becky’s couch, I prayed to God for our victory and to bring my demon back to me unharmed.Becky wasn’t there because she had to leave to see her grandmother because of a medical emergency. The water rapidly hit the rocks in a narrow stream. I watched it continuously flow. Nature is truly a miracle and the best way to refresh your mind. However, nothing can ease the anxiety of a current challenge. I couldn’t stop thinking about what Ophelia had said about not seeing a trapped child there. The war that was soon to come entailed death and imprisonment. What would I choose for my aunt when I wasn’t sure about her sins? Punishing an innocent would eat me up alive. There had to be a solution.“There is, Cass,” Desmond spoke. For the past five minutes, gushing water was the only sound around us. “I brought you here to clear your mind. Don’t punish yourself because of Jane.”With a lowered head, I walked up to Desmond. “I am sorry. Don’t you find this extremely troubling?”“No.” Desmond shook his head. “Because the solution is obvious.”“Which is what?” I said, desperate for anything.“Jane hasn’t given us any proof of her innocence. We don’t trust anyone,” Desmond began. I wa

I put a hand over my eyes, knowing very well that I could only conceal my face and not my thoughts from the two demons around me. How could I control my thoughts? For us humans, our minds and social media are the only two places to criticize safely. It was so unfair to have that taken away from you. I wished for the ground beneath to swallow me to save everyone from further embarrassment.“But I didn’t say anything, mother,” said Desmond. He must be trying to divert her attention from me. My boyfriend was very forgiving of my insulting thoughts. Was his mother the same? The lady opened her eyes to reveal the most striking golden eyes. The color was similar to Desmond’s siren irises, but they lacked the glow and appeared more natural. Her overall look reminded me of Rose from Titanic. She had red hair with the fairest skin and an elegant fashion sense.“You know I have a gift for this. You were about to introduce this beautiful human girl to me as your partner,” she spoke with a toothy

It was finally happening. Desmond’s tongue was so deep in my mouth that I could feel us becoming one. I didn’t want it to end. My mind couldn’t help but compare the kiss to the one I had shared with Charles. Kissing Charles was slobbery and warm. Whereas kissing Desmond was discovering infinite pleasures within your mouth while losing all control and touch with your surroundings. My feelings for my demon were just as massive as the difference between the two make-out sessions, which amplified the bliss even more.I liked how one of Desmond’s hands was still on my boob. He had already helped me explore the pleasures of my body in countless ways. Yet, I still wanted more. Not even an eternity locked and lost in his body could quench my thirst for him. I was addicted to him.Desmond’s hands traveled around my body, searching for more to grab and feel. With the same intention, I unzipped his jacket and slipped my hands underneath his shirt, feeling his soft skin and ripped body.“Cass, s

My eyes dropped to Desmond’s mouth, desperately waiting for a yes to come out of there. We had been apart for far too long, and only a few days away from him had felt like a million years of torture. All of Desmond’s lies and mistakes were forgiven and forgotten. His unusual appearance and true self became a part of me. Nothing mattered in that moment. My aching heart only sought solace in the man before me. He was the one. He had always been the one. The moment he walked into my life, no other man interested me. My knight in shining armor was perfect. His horns, wings, and tail were a bonus, not an unholy defect or curse. I wholeheartedly accepted and loved him exactly the way he was.Desmond was testing my patience with his silence. Deliberately, I filled my mind with passionate thoughts, letting him know how every inch of me longed for him. I could see the result of my experiment in his eyes. Standing close to the guest room window, I felt the chilly city air fan my face. Without a blanket over my shoulders, I would freeze to death. I watched the sparkling city lights and the never-ending sounds. It was two in the morning, and the streets were full of life. I would have found the scene enjoyable if my mind wasn’t troubled by a hundred different emotions. Thanks to Becky for having a three-bedroom apartment so I could have a separate guest room. That day’s events were bizarre and too overwhelming. My mind was all over the place, and I needed time to rearrange my thoughts and think of my next step.“Can I come inside?” Desmond knocked at the ajar door.“Yes, please,” I said, repositioning my blanket more fashionably. The most dominant thoughts in my mind were about Desmond. There was so much that needed to be said.Desmond walked inside, closing the door behind him. My eyes remained glued to the window. Mom was unconscious in Desmond’s arms, and Becky was shocked beyond words.“Oh my God!” Becky’s jaw was almost touching the floor, and her eyes were twitching in a concerning way. “Am I magic now?
