It'd been a couple of weeks since Iris found herself in a new city for the nth time in the past thousand years. There was no place on Earth that she hadn't been to before, but her agelessness made it impossible to stay in one place for too long. Immortality was a curse, she was well aware of it. But add an evil foster brother to it and eternity is a whole new level of hell.
The first thing she did after reaching this new city was to contact one of her centuries-old friends and ask him to meet her. Seemed like normal days of settling into a new city to anyone, but nothing was normal. And on top of it all, Iris couldn't shake the feeling of always being watched, even in the confines of her cozy apartment.
She was aware of her brother always keeping an eye on her, that was how he made sure to destroy even a single moment of bliss she could gather, but this felt different and she couldn't put her finger on it. Since she couldn't do anything about it, she allowed herself to go on about her messy life.
One fine evening, Iris returned after hours of buying groceries. She had barely put the key in the lock when her phone rang. At first, she decided to ignore it and call back once she was free, but the caller ID changed her mind and she picked it up exasperated, "Do you have any idea how worried you have made us all, Carl?"
Before the caller could reply, she entered her apartment with half the groceries and, without switching on any lights, went to the kitchen to place the groceries, and in the same tone resumed, "Where are you anyway? Edward's been bugging me for weeks to tell him where you are and to my surprise, Carlisle the Great, didn't even tell me this time!"
"Maeve, will you listen to me now?" He used a well-rehearsed tactic.
"How many times have I asked you not to call me that?" She tried to sound upset but they both knew he had her attention, for what he wanted to say next.
"Fine, Iris dear, listen. I am somewhere I needed to be and I didn't tell anyone because I couldn't put any of you in danger." He pleaded.
"We are all immortals here, Carl. Who are you trying to protect us from? Especially me, you know I can't die-"
He interrupted her accusatory tone with his soft sympathetic one, "There are fates worse than death, Iris, and your brother is quite capable of inflicting those."
"You are with Y? Aren't you? You went to him? Why would you go to him? Carl, what mess have you gotten yourself into? Didn't you think about your family? Did you think about me at all? You didn't think this through!" She spoke alarmed and stopped fixing the groceries that she had gone back to collect from the door.
"IRIS! I have something very important to tell you. I don't have much time but-" He started hurriedly.
"Carl, you are scaring me. Whatever it is, tell me in person. Get out of there first. Please, I need you in one piece." She almost begged.
"Iris, I am fine. Don't worry. Just listen, please. You have to get out of that city, even the country, as soon as possible. Iris, are you listening to me?" He had an urgency in his voice.
"Carl, I don't understand. What is it? Please come back safely. Please get away from Y. He'll kill you, Carl-" She had a huge urge to pass through the phone and reach her friend who was clearly in a mess.
"Iris, Forget about me!" He said forcefully, trying to get her attention, "Iris, Y has been biotechnologically enhancing people here. Just a week ago in the files here. Iris, he's gonna send enhanced creatures after you who, God knows, may even have the power to kill you. You need to get out of ther-"
"Carl? How do you know all this? What are you exactly telling? Carl? Carlisle? What happened? Carl?" Her phone call had ended mid-conversation. The phone showed no signal, but how could that be?
She put her hands in her hair and started pacing, talking to herself, "O my God! Carl, what have you gotten yourself into? Please don't die for me. I won't be able to live with myself if anything happens to you because of me. Oh, Carlisle!" She would've continued her terrified monologue if she hadn't been interrupted by a strong unfamiliar masculine voice coming from her living room.
Dom had had enough. He had been waiting for his mate to return from her groceries for a while. During that time, he had enough time to rethink all of his decisions, especially the one he was about to declare to his unsuspecting mate on her return home. But that call was unexpected.
And her care for that Carl guy felt even worse.
Dom could feel the same jealousy he felt when he saw her at ease with that guy two weeks ago. But was this and that guy the same person or did his mate have more than one man in her life? He had gotten a few useful answers on the first week after he saw her when his trusted right-hand man had been sent to do homework on her. But there was still so much to learn about her.
She was so busy getting worried about the guy on the phone that she didn't turn on the lights and went straight to the kitchen without noticing Dom and his right-hand man waiting for her in the living area. They waited for her to get free but the conversation took a drastic turn and the guests had to step in.
On one hand, Dom couldn't listen to his mate getting worried over another man, and on the other hand, the call needed to be disrupted so that the idiot Carl won't spill all the beans to his mate. Dom wanted to be the one who told her the truth. So he got the phone signals cut with one gesture and the call dropped. Then, to stop her monologue and introduce himself properly, he finally got her attention by calling out to her, "If you're done, we've been waiting for an hour."
Iris quickly stepped into the living room area and turned on the lights. The sight that awaited her, made Carl fly out of her thoughts and simultaneously made her heart skip a beat with a strange giddiness and fear.
An extremely handsome stranger sat in her reading sofa chair and beside him stood another man, just as handsome but a little younger, and both vibrated authority. Iris felt like she couldn't remove her eyes from the one seated on her sofa. She didn't know what to say or feel, but there were strange contradictory feelings going through her the more he stared at her with those steel orbs of eyes.
After what felt like an eternity, he broke the staring contest and nodded to the man beside him, who swiftly went outside, leaving them alone. That broke her trance and all her built walls came straight up and feelings of paranoia and threat were the only ones left. Dom felt the change in her as well but waited for her reaction.
"Who the heck are you? and how did you even get inside?" Iris finally decided defensive was the way around this man who only a few moments ago made her giddy with a mere gaze.
"My name is Dominic. Nice to meet you, Iris." His voice held a strange silky authority. This made her try to become even more defensive,
"How the hell do you know my name? and I asked you, How did you enter? This place is-"
He interrupted her, "-Fortified with magic? Well, let's just say, I am too handsome for the magic to work on me, Iris." He smirked slyly at her. Her name rolled sensually on his tongue as she felt confused and slightly threatened about the man who knew about her magical inchantments and even crossed them.
He stood up and she took an involuntary step backward, almost yelling, "How the fuck do you know me? and how did you enter? Answer me!" He held up his powerful hands in surrender, "I am not a threat, Iris, in fact, I am-"
"I don't care whoever you are. If you don't stop with your riddles, tell the truth, and leave me alone, I am going to blast you out across the street." If he knew of her magic enchantments, then she had no reason to keep her magic in check. After the strange, worrisome conversation, she just had with Carl. If magic is what it takes to protect herself, so be it.
"Iris, I understand you have questions, and you are confused but-" He almost smiled mockingly at her. Before he could complete his sentence, she gathered her magic and, with a silent blast spell, hurled her power to knock him down as proof of her power that he did not compare to.
But to her utter shock and his satisfaction, nothing happened. The spell didn't work, the magic didn't even leave her body at all to attack the man standing shamelessly arrogant in front of her, hands casually in the pockets of his dress pants, smirking. This had never happened before. Her magic had never in a thousand years of her existence failed her before.
What was this man? She was about to find out!
Do you think Dom could have handled the situation any differently? Do you think he made the right decision?
Iris stood in disbelief looking at her hands and then at the handsomely menacing stranger in her living room who was apparently magic-proof. The look he was giving her told her he had been expecting her reaction and he was enjoying the shock she was in, which too seemed expected. Carlisle's words rang in her head, 'Y' 'send enhanced creatures after you' 'power to kill you, get out of that city.' That paralleled with the stranger's infuriating smirk standing confidently like he knows what she is and how to tackle her, Iris felt panic rise inside her like never before. She never needed to fear anyone other than her foster brother. He was the only one stronger than herself with an extreme influence over the supernatural community that very few had. This man's ability to stand smirking against her magic blow meant Carl was right and her brother had succeeded in his mission and the creatures she was being warned about had already found her. Dom saw the panic in her eyes. This wasn't w
Iris's head felt heavy as she dizzily opened her eyes. It felt like an eternity when she was last time intoxicated enough to pass out or made to blackout. The former was due to her extra fast metabolism that made it hard for her to become drunk. The latter, though, was scary and brought very bad memories. Since she hadn't been drinking before passing out, she remembered the handsome Dominic guy with his henchman, clearly sent by her brother to torment her. One of them must've drugged her. That must be why it was hard to focus on her thoughts and she felt like she was in a car. A tranquillizer strong enough to take her down was only present in Y's stash. So many terrifying outcomes made her want to cry out, but her tranquillized body wouldn't cooperate. Dom felt his mate stir and open her eyes. He could see she was struggling to keep them open, keep herself awake and also recognize where she was. The moment her mind registered where she was and what had been done to her, her senses
This time Iris woke up in luxurious surroundings. Her head still pounded and she still felt dizzy, but her surroundings made her overcome every feeling she might have with confusion and awe. It was some sort of master bedroom. From the king-sized bed on which she lay to the marbled floor and painted ceiling with images of Greek Gods, Goddesses, and fire-breathing dragons. The room was a marvel. The royal-ish furniture seemed to be imbibed with gold and gems in various places. Iris tried moving and getting to a sitting position. She didn't know how she got there but the memories from before tranquillization came back gradually. This clearly wasn't werewolves, they would never treat her this well. So could it be her abductor, Dominic? She didn't even know his last name and he seemed to know her strengths and weaknesses like the back of his hand. She could see three doors, one of them must be the bathroom and the other the walk-in wardrobe, so that meant the third one was the exit. Tha
The reality of being kidnapped by a person who could legit turn himself into a dragon was a scary one. Iris was trying to come to terms with it all when the three women heard an explosion that seemed just outside the wall-sized window. Lady Marie suddenly got into a high-alert mode and ordered Sussane, "The duty to comfort and protect your Alpha lady is on you now child, prove your worth."* With that, she was out of the room as quickly as sound. Iris looked at Sussane alarmed, "What was that? What is happening? What did Lady Marie mean by Alpha Lady? Was she referring to me? What do I need comfort and protection from? Why did she ask you to prove your worth? Is it Dragon Dominic?" The questions poured from her lips like water from a waterfall but Sussane simply replied, "There are two things you should know, Lady Hanson. One, There are things like answering your questions, that I am not allowed to do, only Lady Marie or Alpha McBlaze can, even though I do know the truth, it's not m
By the time evening rolled in, Iris was getting jumpy and Sussane was finding it hard to keep her calm. Commotion and voices outside had ceased but Iris' restlessness only increased with every passing minute. Twilight had settled when Lady Marie entered, "Ah, finally, we can all relax and rest for the night. Tomorrow is a big day." She looked exhausted but had a victorious shine in her eyes. "Alright! That is enough!" Iris had finally had enough. She was done waiting and she was done waiting in one room belonging to her abductor and feeling caged. "Either you guys tell me the whole truth right now. Or so help me God, Dragons or not, I will tear you all to shreds and escape. I'd rather take my chances in the outside world than in this royal prison you are conducting." She was furious and both the women could see that. Sussane looked helplessly at Lady Marie and communicated telepathically to her, 'She has been on the verge of bursting for a while now.' Lady Marie nodded silently, t
"Mate!"The moment that those words left Lady Marie's lips, Iris felt a chill travel down her spine. She was familiar with this bond. It had happened once, a long time ago, when she was newly enhanced. It did not end nicely.#It was when Iris found herself in a random forest somewhere in England when she was only a century old, most of which was either spent in a Japanese temple learning to become a samurai or in a Russian laboratory as a lab rat. She had finally broken out of her lab prison and was currently trying to survive the cold English winter night when an amazing feeling hit her. It felt like home and comfort and warmth. She stood on her guard, ready to run again if need be. She had been through enough already. But that smell materialized in the form of a handsome blonde man with blue eyes smiling kindly at her. That is how she realized she had found home and comfort and warmth in the form of a man. But before that, she had already promised herself to another man, so she cou
A warm, soothing comfort surrounded her as Iris wanted nothing more than to snuggle into the inviting scent. Everything felt so right that she wanted to sleep a little more. But despite everything, she stiffened at the toughness of her pillow. Where was her feather pillow and why was this hard pillow breathing? Before she could react to what seemed like a nightmarish situation, a rumble was heard as a laugh sounded from her pillow, ”I know you are awake, little wolf!” She heard the smirk in his voice. Iris opened her eyes to stare directly into the mesmerizing ones of none other than Dominic McBlaze, who was lying shirtless where Iris' was against his naked chest, which felt like searing her cheek, and her ear could hear his beating heart. The full extent of her compromising position dawned on her when he noted smugly, "Even though you drool, you do sleep adorably." That made her shoot up, rubbing her chin to get rid of the little drool that got her made fun of, making the sheet cov
Since, apparently, they were having breakfast in the bedroom, Iris didn't want to stay with Dom alone any more than she had already done so far. He did things to her without touching her. He made her heart flutter, the kind of thing that made her confused. Yes, he was her mate and she understood that. That was why she was as hysterical as she was and trying to escape right now, but she needed time to come out of her love phobia. It felt like she had stopped allowing herself to be happy over the centuries, since her brother wouldn't ever allow her to receive the love of a man. Iris asked Lady Marie, "Will you join us for breakfast? I was hoping to get a few questions answered." But their privacy was all in Lady Marie's intentions, "My pretty child, you do not need me for any more answers. Your mate is just as well aware of the past and present as I am. He is quite capable of answering any and every question that you may have." She smiled, sensing her helplessness, and gave some detai
Hello, my beautiful escapists who kept up with my shenanigans throughout the ups and downs of this book. First things first, I love you all. I feel so lucky to have found this platform and through this all of you. I love the comments and I hope you weren't bored with my author notes. Multiple TV shows, novels, and movies came together in my head every night, and I created Iris. Through her I created Dominic and you guys know the rest. I have two news to share with yall. The first one is about this book. I am delighted and proud to tell you guys that 'Under the Dragon's Protection' is available on A****n Kindle. I have ordered my author's copy of the paperback for this book. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, A****n is unable to ship to Pakistan to my remote location in the middle of Thal, the second largest desert in my country. So, I have sought the help of an abroad friend to get it for me and then send it to me by post. The whole procedure will take more than a couple of
Marie had wanted to be the first one to see the Sun on the first day of the year. She had convinced her parents to fly her to the East coast of Japan to stand on the highest point and catch the first rays of the first Sun of the year. They had reached there a day earlier, and Marie was determined to stay awake the whole night, countdown to midnight, and then watch the sunrise before sleeping. Iris was sure she wouldn't make it past ten, but she still promised her daughter not to force her bedtime and in case she does fall asleep, to wake her up before midnight and sunrise. * Dom walked from behind Iris, who was leaning slightly on the balcony railing deep in thought, the mug of tea brewed from local Japanese herbs forgotten in her hands. "Penny for your thoughts, Little Wolf?" Dom whispered close to her ear and took pleasure as her body reacted to his voice. Iris turned around slightly, placing the mug on the nearby table as Dom placed his hands on the railing behind her, envelo
"Daddy, watch out!" But before Dom could duck, a ball of snow flew into his face and then Iris' laugh rang through the chilly morning. "My turn!" Dom laughed louder wiping his face and threatening, "Now, watch out!" He threw the two balls of snow in his big hands, one at each of his girls. Purposefully missing his daughter, making her sweet laugh ring in the crisp morning air. "Mommy, I need more!" Little Marie called out, making Iris temporarily lose concentration and head towards her daughter to create a bunch of little snowballs for her to throw. That's when Dom sneaked behind his wife and masterfully pulled back her neckline to drop a handful of ice down her back, making her shriek and run inside, "Dom! You'll pay for this." "You wanna make snow angels?" Dom offered his daughter who still stood bewildered at what had happened and why had mommy suddenly stopped helping her make more snowballs. She nodded enthusiastically and laid on the snow as Dom joined her and the two str
"Dom, she is too young for this. Wait a few more years." Iris laughed as she read a book and kept watch on baby Marie while her father was doing things nobody expected him to. Ever since the war had been won and peace had been settled. Dominic and Iris chose a secluded place untouched by war or any bad memories, a small cottage beside a private white beach in Brazil, to raise their daughter. Of course, there were times when they had to fly or teleport to a meeting halfway across the world when Freddie or Nora needed them to be present. The Alpha King and Queen could simply not vanish with the little princess. The secret perfectly up-to-date with technology and the magic, basement of the cottage was an example of how Dom and Iris were working from home while giving Marie the childhood that neither of them had. They had settled into this new routine of mundane chores which meant everything to the couple who had seen and suffered so much in their millennia-long lives. Dom had changed
[The semi-smut scene of the patch-up in the cave.] This was the first time a man had looked at her with this hunger and not to harm her but with a need to love her. That was all the motivation either of them needed because they didn't know who began it but with another loud thunder, they were on each other. More like Dom was hoisting Iris by her thighs as she had jumped on him and wrapped her legs around his torso. The patch-up makeout was intense as they kissed each other wanting to drown in the other. Their tongues danced to the wild rhythms of their hearts as their combined shadow danced with fire on the cave walls on the music of the magical storm that was raging outside. Once their lips were kiss-swollen and their lungs could not take the lack of oxygen anymore, they unwillingly separated. But Dom had had enough of staying away and the factors that were trying to pull them apart, so he headed for an attack of kisses and nibbles on her neck making it hard for her to control her
[Dom's dream from the Med-Bay bed after getting rescued from Y's Island and recovering.] Dom outlined the edge of her black lace panties with his teeth as Iris couldn't help but squirm under his ministrations, making Dom stop and look up from his position between her legs and say in his deep sensual voice, "Little wolf, if you don't stay place, these lace panties are not going anywhere tonight!" Iris looked at him doubtfully, "You don't mean that!" Dom sat up straight, revealing his tanned chest that flowed down to his smooth torso ornamented by rigid eight-pack abs and that sexy v-line that made Iris drool. "Try me!" He challenged and Iris was quick to give in, not only because she knew he would do as he said but also because she was too eager to avoid delay. She wanted him and she wanted him soon, so she huffed making her naked breasts jiggle. "Fine!" Dom's bulge in his trousers got more obvious at the show of her hot body lying almost naked on his bed waiting for him to do
Implied Smut. The salty water washed its foam around their feet as their eyes gazed at the mesmerizing sunset. After an exquisite lunch, Iris found herself being led out of the house by Dom and towards the beach. The weather wasn't particularly sunny, but it was perfectly cloudy enough to walk in the not-so-hot sand barefoot and roam around without sunglasses or hats. The salty sea wind blew through their hair and clothes, and Iris felt a sense of euphoria she had always yearned for. Dom couldn't help himself but keep his eyes fixated on his mate. Lady luck had smiled on him, and he couldn't be more grateful. He wanted to provide her with everything she had been missing for centuries. They kept walking silently on the beach, savoring each other's company and the gorgeous beach around them. No exchange of words was needed. Somewhere along the walk, Dom's hand found Iris subtly. She didn't pull it away, relishing in the little skin-on-skin contact they were allowed before the rituals
It is said that there are two parts of war. The battlefield and the aftermath. The battle was won. The cost came in the aftermath. Dom along with his family and those of the deceased was the first one to enter the Shifter Cemetery. It was the huge ground where all the shifters who lost their lives to Y's madness were buried after the war. Those who had been recognizable had tombstones, the rest got collective plates with lists of names of those lost in war. There was an empty grave for the innocent Isabella, about whose whereabouts no one had any idea. But Freddie deserved a place to mourn, and Isabella deserved to be remembered like the rest of the innocent victims. Liliana's body had been recovered, but it would've been unfair to all those who died fighting Waai if she had been buried in their ranks. So Dom had placed her in the backyard of his private mansion, where only the close family would be able to visit and remember. Iris still hadn't been able to entirely move past the
[Warning: This chapter contains an account of childbirth. Readers are advised to proceed with caution.] Dominic walked haphazardly through the emergency field hospital that had been set up by the witches to help the wounded in the war. "We need more people, just give the order and the women can come to aid." Nathaniel was trying to keep up with Dom's pace and convince him. "I cannot allow them to be on the battlefield when I promised their men that their women, children, and elderly would be safe at all costs." Dom looked around at his people, some lying motionless on the makeshift cots with missing limbs, some lying on the ground groaning because there was nowhere else to go, awaiting medical and magical help. "I am not asking you to order them to be here or break your promise. Just give the women a choice. Let the ones who volunteer come and help us get these brave people back on their feet. The war isn't over just because Waai is dead." Nathanial was persistent. Dom suddenly st
