Jaxon’s POV

Few hours ago

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room as I walked down the grand staircase of my mansion, the polished marble floors cool beneath my bare feet.

My butler, Gregson, was waiting for me at the dining table, setting down a steaming cup of black coffee.

“Good morning, sir,” he greeted, his tone formal as always.

“Morning,” I muttered, running a hand through my hair and taking my seat.

The warmth of the cup was a welcome comfort as I brought it to my lips.

Before I could enjoy the first sip, Alexis waltzed into the room, her loose robe trailing behind her.

Her hair was slightly scattered, a testament to her casual attitude, but her sharp blue eyes were as alert as ever.

“Good morning, sunshine,” she chirped, sliding into the chair opposite me.

“Morning,” I replied with a smirk.

“Gregson, could you get me a coffee too?” she asked sweetly.

Gregson nodded without hesitation.

“Of course, ma’am.”

As Gregson disappeared into the kitchen, A

Jaxon’s POVThe tension in the air was almost palpable as Alexis and Eric exchanged light banter, their voices weaving an odd contrast to the storm brewing inside me. My eyes moved between Riley and Eric, lingering on the subtle way Riley shifted closer to him, as though drawn to his presence. My jaw clenched. Something had happened between them. I didn’t need confirmation; the signs were all there. The slight redness in Riley’s cheeks, the way Eric glanced at him like he was the only person in the room, and, of course, the damned shirt. Riley’s voice broke through my thoughts. “Would you two like to have anything? I mean, since you’re already here.” It was a casual invitation, polite on the surface, but there was something deliberate about it. I opened my mouth to decline, already envisioning the torture of sitting in their space, but Alexis nudged me in the side, her elbow sharp against my ribs. “We’d love to, but not right now. I like having my coffee rest in my stomach f

  • Under His Command    Unsteady Ground

Riley’s POVI returned to the living room with the stack of high school yearbooks in my hands, carefully avoiding making eye contact with Jaxon as I handed them to Alexis. She took them with an excited grin, flipping the first one open immediately. “Oh my God, Riley!” she exclaimed, pointing at one of the photos. “Look at you here! You were so cute back then. Look at those cheeks!” My face burned as I glanced at the picture. It was one of those cheesy spirit-week photos where I was dressed as the school mascot—a giant, fluffy bear. It wasn’t my finest moment, but Alexis seemed to find it absolutely adorable. Eric chuckled beside me, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. “She’s right, you know. You were cute. Still are.” He leaned in, planting a quick kiss on my cheek. I froze, glancing at Jaxon out of the corner of my eye. He didn’t say anything at first, but the slight narrowing of his eyes told me he’d seen the gesture. Then, as though he couldn’t help himself, he rolled h

  • Under His Command    A Game of Power

Jaxon’s POVI sat alone in the conference room, leaning back in the leather chair as my eyes flicked across the screen of my phone. Alexis had texted me earlier with a picture of the newest addition to her life—a golden retriever puppy with floppy ears and a lopsided grin. She always had an habit of buying new things whenever she felt lonely or needed something to take her attention away from her depressing extravagant life."Isn’t he adorable?" she had written, followed by an absurd number of heart emojis. Despite myself, I smiled at the photo. The dog was undeniably cute, its big brown eyes staring innocently at the camera. For a brief moment, I let the softness of the image seep in. But then I remembered where I was—and more importantly, who I was—and quickly wiped the smile off my face. I needed to put my game face on if I wanted my plan to work, and sure enough, I had confidence it will. When the door to the conference room opened and Riley stepped inside, I was all busi

  • Under His Command    A Quiet Resolve

Riley’s POVI kicked off my shoes the moment I stepped through the door, leaving them roughly by the entrance without a care of how careless it looked. My entire body felt like it had been wrung out and left to dry and I hated this exhausted feeling. The day had been exhausting—meetings that seemed to drag on forever, endless tasks piling up faster than I could cross them off, and the constant, suffocating presence of Jaxon having his control over everything. All I wanted was to sink into my couch, binge-watch my favorite series, and fall asleep midway through an episode. That sounded like heaven right now. But of course, Jaxon had other plans. I slumped onto the couch for a moment, resting my head on the cushions and closing my eyes. A part of me wanted to pretend I’d forgotten all about the “dinner invitation” Jaxon had so generously extended—or rather, demanded. But that was impossible. Ignoring Jaxon wasn’t an option. “What does he even want now?” I muttered to myself. Hi

  • Under His Command    Playing The Game

Jaxon’s POVThe soft hum of classical music filtered through the restaurant as I sat at the corner table, absently swirling the glass of wine in my hand. The restaurant was one of the most exclusive in the city—exactly the type of place that demanded elegance and sophistication. The kind of place Riley Matthews didn’t belong in. I smirked at the thought, setting the glass down without taking a sip. A part of me couldn’t wait to see how out of place Riley would look tonight, fumbling with the utensils or trying to make sense of the extensive wine list. A buzz from my phone interrupted my thoughts. I glanced at the screen and saw a message from the driver. "We’re on our way, sir. Mr. Matthews has changed already."I smiled, locking the screen and slipping the phone into my pocket. Perfect. That gave me just enough time to prepare. Tonight would be interesting. My goal was simple: break Riley’s resolve, toy with him a little more, and remind him exactly who held all the power

  • Under His Command    Dinner with Jaxon

Riley’s POVThe big menu felt weird in my hands as I looked through it, trying not to let my mouth drop at the outrageous prices staring back at me. I shifted in my seat, glancing discreetly at the people dining around me. They all looked so comfortable, sipping their wine, chatting softly, as if the cost of a single appetizer wasn’t more than twice my monthly salary. How did people like this even exist? The numbers on the page blurred slightly as my mind wandered. It wasn’t just the food prices—it was everything. The tailored suits, the glittering jewelry, the casual ease with which these people carried themselves. It was a world I didn’t belong in. “Something wrong?” Jaxon’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I glanced up, and there he was, lounging back in his seat, his eyes locked on me like he was studying an exhibit in a museum. “What are you looking at?” I asked, my tone sharper than I intended. He laughed softly, the sound rich and arrogant, like he knew somet

  • Under His Command    Under the Spotlight

Riley's POVThe moment Sheffield spotted Jaxon and me, his face lit up like a bright traffic sign, his pearly white smile making him look even more insufferably smug. But what caught me off guard was how his expression softened—brightened, even—when his gaze landed on me. I wouldn't be surprised if he still had memories of our very brief time together when Jaxon had given me up to him.As he walked towards us, I silently prayed he would just give us a short greeting then find his way to another table. But judging from the look in his eyes, I knew it was impossible.“Well, well, if it isn’t Jaxon Steele,” Sheffield announced, his voice carrying through the restaurant with practiced ease. “And you brought company. What a surprise!” I glanced at Jaxon, silently pleading for him to deflect Sheffield’s attention, but the slight smirk tugging at the corners of Jaxon’s mouth told me he wasn’t going to. Sheffield turned to a nearby waiter and said, “Move us to a bigger table. My treat. We

  • Under His Command    Breaking the Rules

Jaxon’s POVThe cool night air greeted us as we stepped out of the restaurant. Sheffield’s laughter echoed behind me as Riley walked beside me, his pace brisk, his shoulders stiff. I glanced at him, but his expression was unreadable, his lips pressed into a thin line. I couldn’t stop replaying the moment from dinner when Riley had told Ryan that Eric was just a friend. A friend. That single word lodged itself in my mind like a splinter. It didn’t add up. The way Riley had been looking at his phone, the brief flush on his cheeks—those weren’t the reactions of someone casually texting a friend. But maybe... just maybe, things between Riley and Eric weren’t as serious as I’d thought. The corner of my mouth lifted in a smug smile. If I played my cards right, this would work in my favor. We reached the parking lot, and I gestured toward Sheffield’s car parked at the far end. “We’ll walk you to your car,” I said, my tone neutral. Sheffield beamed. “Such a gentleman, Jaxon. Alw

  • Under His Command    Shattered Composure

Jaxon’s POVThe grand ballroom of the gala was nothing short of spectacular, yet it did little to improve my mood. Crystal chandeliers hung like beautiful waterfalls of light, reflecting off the polished marble floors. Tables were set with luxury white linens, followed by arrangements of red roses and gold candlesticks. Guests moved like well-dressed shadows in the low, warm light, their laughter and chatter a distant hum. But for all the beauty, my mind was elsewhere—stuck on the infuriating image of Riley in that damn bar. I almost couldn't get it out of my head and I couldn't help but wonder if I just felt guilty for sending him home for such an insignificant reason.I shook my head slightly, trying my best to sgahe those thoughts away. I needed to focus on this event. It is what's most important.Beside me, my assistant, Natalie, stood nervously, her tablet clutched tightly to her chest. Judging from the look on her face, I could tell she had something on her mind but perhaps

  • Under His Command    Riding To Redemption

Riley’s POVThe hum of the car engine was oddly soothing as I settled into the seat of Ryan’s car. The city lights of Los Angeles blurred past us, vibrant and alive, their energy a stark contrast to the turmoil still simmering in my chest. Ryan glanced at me from the front seat, his eyes warm and curious. “So, Riley,” he began, his voice breaking the silence. “What is this gala event you're headed to tonight, looking all sharp and dapper?” I shifted slightly, adjusting the lapels of my suit. “There’s a gala I’m supposed to attend. Business-related, of course.” Ryan raised an eyebrow, his smile teasing. “You sound thrilled.” I couldn’t help but chuckle dryly. “Let’s just say it’s been one of those days.” His gaze lingered, inviting me to elaborate. “What happened?” he asked, his tone light yet genuinely interested. “You seemed fine earlier at the bar. That is, of course, before you disappeared and I didn't see you again.” I sighed, leaning back in my seat. “I'm so s

  • Under His Command    Defying Jaxon

Riley's POVMy hands trembled as I shoved another shirt into my suitcase, the fabric wrinkling under the force of my frustration.Anger burned hot and heavy in my chest, my movements jerky and uncoordinated as I slammed the suitcase shut. The last couple of hours had been hell in my head and I could almost feel myself almost going crazy out of anger caused by only one man.Jaxon Steele. The arrogant, insufferable bastard. If I didn’t need this job to keep paying my rent, I would’ve punched him directly in his smug face and walked out with my head held high. Instead, here I was, packing up my things like a scolded schoolboy. The way he had talked to me was unacceptable and I hated the thought of being chased back to NYC when I should be here helping out the company the best way I know how.The sound of my phone ringing snapped me out of my storm of anger. I glanced at the screen—Eric. Perfect. I swiped to answer and brought the phone to my ear. “Hey,” I greeted, my voice sh

  • Under His Command    Lines Crossed

Jaxon’s POV(An Hour Ago)The night was silent, but my thoughts were anything but. I paced my room, unable to shake the gnawing irritation that had been building since the plane ride. Every time I tried to focus on the city skyline outside, my mind dragged me back to Riley. Why this was happening became a complete mystery to me and I wanted it to stop as soon as possible.Something about him unsettled me in ways I couldn’t explain—or maybe I just didn’t want to. Unable to resist the urge, I grabbed my phone and dialed the extension to his room. It rang and rang, but no one answered. My jaw tightened. What was he doing? I tried to brush it off, telling myself I was overreacting, but after a few more minutes, I found myself standing outside Riley’s door. I knocked sharply, my irritation bleeding into my movements. I had expected him to come to the door almost immediately but despite knocking severally, there was still no answer. I knocked again, harder this time. Still nothin

  • Under His Command    Innocence Misread

Riley’s POVThe room was quiet now, a sanctuary after the turbulence of the day. I had unpacked most of my things, neatly arranging them in the drawers and closet like I always did—it gave me a sense of control, even if everything else was a chaotic mess. The view from my window was stunning. The city lights of LA sparkled against the backdrop of the night, each one a small fragment of life I wished I could explore. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, the screen lighting up with Eric’s name. I smiled, already anticipating his teasing. “Hey, Eric,” I greeted, answering the call and laying back on the bed. “Riley! Finally! I thought you’d forgotten about me,” Eric said, his tone mock-indignant. I chuckled. “How could I? You’d never let me live it down" I replied with a smile playing on my lips. The conversation flowed easily, as it always did with Eric. He wanted to know everything—how the trip was going, how the city looked, what the hotel was like. “Well,” I began, “the c

  • Under His Command    Shadows of Desire

Jaxon's POVThe moment I stepped into my hotel suite, I allowed myself a brief sigh of relief. It was as if I had just returned from a long journey and I needed to rest my body, as well as my mind, from the gruelling ordeal I had endured on the way.The space was nothing short of magnificent—floor-to-ceiling windows that offered an unparalleled view of Los Angeles, a sprawling king-sized bed adorned with crisp, white linens, and sleek, modern furniture that exuded quiet luxury. If there was one thing my assistant had managed to do right, it was booking this hotel. The city stretched out below me, a glittering tapestry of lights and movement. From this height, it looked almost serene—ironic, considering how chaotic my thoughts were. I loosened my tie and wandered to the windows, letting the cool glass press against my palm. I loved this feeling of brief liberation, even though it felt alien a few moments later.“Not bad,” I muttered to myself, taking in the view. After a few

  • Under His Command    Thoughts of Pain

Riley's POVThe plane’s wheels touched down with a slight jolt, and I couldn’t suppress the smile that stretched across my face as I looked out the window. We were finally out of the air and now in Los Angeles. The city of stars, sprawling beaches, and endless opportunities. Even though I was here for work—and under less-than-ideal circumstances—I couldn’t help but feel a wave of excitement wash over me. It was my first time being here and I almost couldn't control the constant smile plastered on my face.As the plane moved to the gate, I glanced over at Jaxon, seated several rows ahead in first class. His posture was rigid, and he looked as unapproachable as ever. I sighed. If there was one cloud hanging over this otherwise perfect day, it was him. After collecting my carry-on bag, I made my way off the plane and into the bustling terminal. The energy here was electric, the kind of vibrant chaos that only a city like LA could offer. Jaxon and his assistant were already waitin

  • Under His Command    Turbulence in the Air

Jaxon’s POVMy assistant cleared her throat awkwardly, clearly trying to diffuse the situation. “Mr. Steele, Ms. Carver specifically mentioned that Riley would be the best fit for this trip given his involvement in the marketing project. She trusted him to represent the department.” I didn’t look convinced. “There had to be someone else.” “I’m here now,” Riley said, a little sharper. “And I’m not going to back out last minute. This trip is important for the company.” My jaw tightened, my stare boring into him.“This trip doesn’t concern you.” “It does now,” he countered, standing his ground. “Unless you want to waste time finding someone else to replace me. I doubt the plane will wait for that.” For a moment, we both became quiet as we stared down at each other. I was waging an internal battle, my lips pressed so tightly together I thought they might disappear entirely. Finally, I exhaled sharply, my voice low and cold. “Fine. But stay out of my way.” I'm sure the wor

  • Under His Command    Meeting in the Airport

Jaxon’s POVI glanced over at the open suitcase on my bed, half-filled with meticulously folded clothes and travel essentials. Alexis stood at the foot of the bed, rolling her eyes as she refolded a shirt I had just tossed in. “Honestly, Jaxon,” she said with mock exasperation, holding up a pair of socks I’d balled together. “You run a multi-billion-dollar corporation, but you can’t pack a suitcase to save your life.” I let out a low grunt, leaning against the doorframe with my arms crossed. “I didn’t ask for your help, Alexis.” She smirked, unbothered by my tone. “No, but you need it. And you know it.” I sighed, running a hand through my hair. Alexis had been one of the few constants in my life, and while her meddling could be irritating, I couldn’t deny she was right most of the time. As she folded yet another shirt with precision, she glanced up at me. “You’ve been different lately.” I stiffened, my expression hardening. “What are you talking about?” I asked, curio
