I sit in my study in the pack house, going over our finances and approving budgets. After 13 years of doing this, it feels like second nature to me. Today feels a little off. I had my normal sparring session this morning with my Beta, Luke. Today's session was pretty gruelling, and I think I pulled a muscle in my wrist, an injury that isn't as serious as for wolves as it is for humans. Right now, there is just a slight stiffness in my wrist when I move it around.
For the past three years, I have not been able I have not been able to sleep properly and normally a nice sparring section with Luke and a long run in wolf form would help me blow off steam and calm my wolf for a bit but today, the uneasiness only grows as the hour passes. I sigh and try to concentrate on the account books, but the numbers just blur in front of my eyes. I put the account books aside and start messaging my wrist when I'm consumed by an array of emotions that I know instinctively doesn't belong to me.For a few seconds, I'm panicking, and before I begin to even start processing everything that, it becomes fear, then it turns into rage. Real, raw rage. In less than a minute, the emotions just wink out of existence like a snuffed out candle.I grab my phone immediately and proceed to call Luke, but before I can start dialling, he calls me, and as soon as I answer, I know some something wrong."Luke?""She's gone, Max," He says, and my whole world goes off its axis."Someone took her on her way home. There was a struggle, but there's no blood."My claws slash out, and when I speak, I know my wolf is in my voice."Do you have a trail?".Twenty minutes of full tilt running later, I'm standing at the place where Calista was taken. I immediately spot Walker, the pack member who was supposed to watch Callie. I walk over to him, and once he sees me, he bows his head, and I fight the urge to throttle him."What happened?" I ask him .How was she taken?""I'm sorry, Alpha..... It's just that I didn't know she didn't use this path. I thought she was going to use the major roads so I waited for her there." I give an exasperated sigh."Were you not kept appraised of her routes?, Were you not aware that she takes the same route every gods damned day?" With each word, my voice gets quieter, and I am descending into the part of that becomes one with my wolf. The place where I can not tell where Max the 'human' and Max the 'Wolf' begins and ends. I turn away from Walker, and by the time I turn to Luke, I am more wolf than man."What do you have for me, Luke?" Luke, who is normally laid back, looks grimly at me."There are no CCTV cameras around which is unfortunate, but from the scents, there were three people here, one was Callista, and others two were the assailants.""Wolf?" I ask"No, human."He replies. I nod my head and gesture for him to continue. "The trail ends at the highway. I sent elena to keep on tracking. if anyone can pick up the trail, it's her." I nod in approval. Elena is our best tracker. I have total faith in her ability to find literally anything. Luke leans in close to me"So from the scent, it seems the assailants were waiting for her, and immediately she showed up, they grabbed her. I don't think she made it easy for them though, the most pungent scent in the air is that of feminine rage." I turn to look at him with eyes I'm fully aware reflect the golden of my Wolf's."I know." he inclines his head and gives a small smile."Figures" I don't respond to his comment. We wait in silence when his phone pings with an incoming message."Elena has her. They're in an abandoned warehouse downtown." He says."Get Natalie, tell her to come to the warehouse we might need a medic."☆★★☆☆★★☆☆★★☆☆★★☆☆★When we get to the warehouse, Elena walks towards us and gives me friendly salute."Any news, Elena?""None, it's been pretty quiet so far,but a few minutes ago, one of the guys left, and before you ask, yes, the other one is still in there."As we are outside, a scream pierces through the air, I phase into my wolf, and I'm moving before it even stops.I go into the building, and Calista is on the floor with a man looming over her and pulling her jeans down for a split second she looks at me and then looks away. A red haze fills my vision, and I want to kill him. I want to strangle him and watch the life bleed out from his eyes. I want him to watch and know who it is that is killing him, I want him to beg.I phase out of my wolf to my human form and stalk over to him. He is so engrossed with undoing his clothes that he doesn't hear me as I approach. He only acknowledges me when I hold him by the scruff of his neck and start choking him. He tries to say something, but I can't hear, I'm too busy enjoying him struggle. He turns red and then purple and finally goes limp with the film of death already creping into his eyes.Luke rushes to Calista, but I growl. I'm no longer in control. My entire being is driven by instinct and anger. Another male is near my mate. Another male is close enough to touch her, my mate. MINE .I growl at Luke. I growl at everyone. I block her body with mine. Luke backs away, and Elena steps forward."We just want to help her, Max, that's all we want. To help. We are pack, family. She's yours, but she needs help, okay, and we can give her that help." Her words get to me, so I bring myself back from the rage induced stupor I'm in and step aside from Calista’s bodyRight then, Natalie runs in and goes straight to Calista’s side. She opens her med box and starts examining Calista"How's she?" I ask" She's a little banged up, and it seems she was being continuously drugged,""Will there be any side effects?"" I can't say for sure. I don't know what kind of medication they used.""Yes, we can," Elena says, holding up a small bottle. Natalie takes it from her and reads it."Okay, so she may experience temporary memory loss," Natalie says, but I interrupt"What kind of memory loss?""She may have no memories of the last 24 hours, or she may have them but think they were a dream.""Okay, but she'll wake up, right?" She looks up at me and smiles"Yes, she will, Max. You can relax, but someone needs to take her home.""I'll do it. I'll take her home. ""Okay, but you'll need a car and some clothes," Luke says. I turn to look at him, and he tosses me clothes. From the scent, it's mine.I carry Calista to the car and buckle her in. She mumbles something, and I don't catch what she's saying. I take a moment to just look at her. She's just so beautiful. I remember her hair being longer from the first time I saw her. She's since cut it. She has dark circles around her eyes now. like she doesn't ever sleep. I stop staring at her like a creep and get into the driver seat to drive her home. When we get to her house, I carry her out of the car and walk to the door, I just realise that I don't have the keys to her house. I place her in a sitting position on the stairs leading to her front door and lean her head on the railing to check her bags for her keys. I get the keys, open the door, and place her on a sofa. Walking around her house feels like a violation, so I just put her bag down beside the sofa. I lean over to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear, and she opens her eyes. There is piercing clarity and awareness in her eyes when she asks"Who are you?" I smile and answer"I'm Max sweetheart, it's nice to meet you again." she looks at me for a moment before her eyelids flutter close. I sit there for a moment to just savour being in her presence before i stand up and leave.I'm a nervous wreck.I clasp my hands in front of me to keep them from shaking. I'm standing in line, in front of the office of the manager in a coffee shop. Recently, I came to the realization that I'm broke. Between normal expenses and a new therapist that my Dad doesn't know about, I don't have money to spare. I considered asking my Dad for money, but considering that I have not spoken to the man in five months, and also the fact that I'm sure he blames me for the accident, I feel a bit shameless asking him for money, and if I'm being honest, I want to do this myself. I've been looking for things that's going to get me money, but I've not had the courage to actually do anything about it or to apply to jobs till today. I look longingly at a fat and delicious looking cookie. At any other time, I might have considered eating the cookie, but right now, that thought just makes me feel nauseated.I look round the cafe, at the customers coming and going. I realise vaguely, there is a lot
Working at a cafe, as it turns out, is a job that involves a lot of repetitive movements, which gets incredibly boring incredibly fast. Right now, Samantha, the girl who got into a fight on my first day that caused me to get this job, doesn't seem so crazy. At this point, I am ready to sell my left hand for something interesting to happen. I start restacking already stacked coffee cups to pass the time when I hear the small bell at the entrance of the cafe, the telltale sign of a customer."I want him," a familiar voice says suddenly from behind me. I turn to look at a beautiful South Asian girl with luscious black curls and beautiful bronzed skin. "Neela," I start. "You can't just say that.""Why not? Just take a look at the man he looks like a snack. " I chuckle and continue stacking the cups. Neela and I have settled into a surprising friendship during the past few weeks. She showed me the ropes when I first started working here, and since then , we've just sort of clicked. We go
It's a Tuesday morning and like every tuesday morning since the past month, I'm in my therapist's office. Its a standard office, with different shades of blues, greens and browns that complements each other beautifully and gives an overall serene vibe. "So how did you feel about that Callie?" I stare at my therapist, Mrs Randall without really seeing her, instead what I was seeing were blue eyes, blue eyes that have haunted me for the past week. It had been six days since I saw him, and in those six days he has haunted my every waking moment. The tall handsome man that I told Neela that I didn't like, yeah, that guy. I'm unsure how I feel about him but what I know for sure is that no normal person hyperfixate on men they don't know, but I think I can be excused, I have not been normal in what, now, feels like forever."Callie?" Mrs Randall or Helen as she likes to be called, calls gently and I snap out of my day dream"Sorry, what" I answer, Helen smiles at me indulgently and I give
"I feel like you have an alternative reason for coming here. I mean, this isn't really your scene, " Elena says, looking up at me."Sometimes Elena, people do things that may suprise you.""Not you, though, Max, you never surprise me. You're very much set in your ways. So tell me, are you here to see Tarla? or are you to see someone else entirely?""You know someone else might take offence with what you're insinuating. Tarla is my sister, and I love her.""Yes, and I'm your baby cousin, I know you." She gives me a side hug."You're forgetting, Max, I was there three years ago." I look at her with raised eyebrows "When you saw her for the first time. You were mesmerised, but I remember your...." She doesn't finish because someone bumps into me. The smell of lilies fills the air."Ouch", someone says from behind me. I turn around, and she is there. She stands there looking adorable in jean shorts, a cross bag, and a neon orange blouse with your move written in bold lettering. "Hello C
You know that game never have I ever? Well. If I ever play the game again and someone asks, never have i ever been stared at with unwavering attention by someone you might possibly have a crush on would have to drink. If you've never been stared at by someone, you might possibly have a crush on. I tell you it's unnerving. Like palm sweating, heart pounding, teeth rattling, hand shaking. Unnerving. Okay, I might be exaggerating a bit, but it was nerve-wracking. He just sat there beside me and used his phone occasionally . If I'm being honest, it was nice. At some point, he reaches over and tucks a piece of hair behind my ear. It was the same piece of hair that I'd been blowing out of my face. Class finishes, and as I pack up my things, Max leans in close to me."Goodbye, sweetheart." The proximity makes me gasp. My mind goes blank for a second, and when I turn around, he's gone. The hollow feeling in my chest returns, and I push it down. I close my eyes for a bit and take deep brea
I was stuck in the dream again. This time, I am inside the car. I can't seem to pull myself away. I just get sucked in. Nicole wasn't feeling too good ever since we got into the car. So my mum said we were going to make a stop at a gas station to get some chocolate for Nicole. For some reason, chocolates always helped her."Don't make that face, Callie," she said."What face? I'm not making any face, " I retort"You totally were," Nicole answers. I bare my teeth "I thought you were sick Nikky you're not supposed to be talking," "Yes, well, I'm never too sick to tell on you". I don't reply to her comment. I'm too angry. I think my mum sensed this. She used to say stuff about a mum's intuition never being wrong. To date, she has never been wrong. She reaches over to take my right arm. I clutch the steering wheel with my left hand and release my right hand. My mum turns over my hand, Interlaces our fingers, with mine on top and hers under, she kisses my hand. She stares at me intentl
"Stop fidgeting.""I'm not.""You are.""I am not." Neela leans over to me. "Callie, you look nice, now stop moving, okay?"The line moves, and I move with it. After Neela announced that we were going out to celebrate my birthday, I've pretty much been on auto pilot. Neela picked out my outfit, and then she told me we were going to a party. Honestly, I'm very nervous. I haven't been out in a year now, and I honestly don't know how to behave or act. I take deep breaths, and I become a little bit calmer. I decided to take my therapist's advice, I mean, we are literally at a club, and since we are here to have a good time. That's what I'm going to do.As I'm giving myself a pep talk, I get my hand stamped, and I enter the club. I wait in a dim hallway for Neela, and she enters chuckling. I see her tuck a piece of paper in her side pocket, but I don't ask about it. I rub my hands on my skirt, and Neela catches my movement "Nervous?" She asks me "Yeah, a little," I say, grimacing "H
I stand there dumbstruck. In front of me, Max holds Greg's hand. Max has a very relaxed stance that would have fooled the casual observer, but the tense set of his shoulders and the ticking in his temple suggests otherwise. In that moment, i understood what Stacy and Neela were saying about Max's aura. It was pretty much a sign floating around his head, saying danger. Keep off.Greg's stupid hand is fisted, and I vaguely come to the realisation that the fucker was about to punch me."What is it to you, the lady and I were just having a little fun?" "From the looks of it, the lady doesn't seem to be having fun." Max turns towards me and the intensity in his gaze makes my breath catch."Were you having fun, Calista?" He asks me, his voice deceptively calm, before I can answer him, stupid Greg interrupts."It seems that you guys know each other, so I think I'm going to go back to the club where the party is happening."The more he talks, the more I feel like slapping the living daylight
Calista’s Pov. I look on in amazed wonder. Not quite sure of what is going on but still basking in it all the same. The voices of hundreds of wolves including Tarla washes through me. I never thought that I would consider the sound of howls as beautiful but this, this is something that I cannot properly put into words. It is wonderful. The howls go on for minutes and a little sigh goes through the crowd as the howls come to an end with floating notes. The little wolves trot up to the podium, and I watch as Max leans down and pats them on their little furry heads. The little ones shift and someone presents them with clothes which they promptly change into. After wearing their clothes, Max calls them each by their names and presents them to the pack. Something in my heart melts as I see the open trust on the children's faces as they look from Max to the pack. “He does this every year?” I ask without taking my eyes off the scene in front of me. “Yes, it's usually just two or thre
Max's Pov "Callie, it's time, we need to go, it's dark out already” Tarla says as she storms into the room, breaking the silence. The moment is broken, and Calista tears her gaze from mine. Tarla looks at us in frozen shock. Understanding slowly dawns on her “I'm so sorry for interrupting.” She says contrite. At Tarla's words, Calista practically leaps away from me. Colour blooms high on her cheeks, giving her the appearance of a deer caught in headlights. “Um,” Calista runs her hands over her dress once, twice, unsure of what to say. I let out a small laugh. “You weren't….” She trails off again, clearing her throat once and her eyes dart to mine for a fleeting second. “I have to go now” Gratitude shines in Calista’s eyes. “Yes he does,” Calista adds. I arch a brow at her but she is staring at Tarla guilt written all over her face. I sidle up to her and lean down close to her ear. “Save me a dance” I whisper to her, before walking out of the room. ★☆☆★★☆☆★★
MAX'S POVI walk silently through the corridors of the mansion, my footfalls echoing throughout the entire space. I was supposed to go straight to the bonfire event, but a tug in my chest directed me to Calista instead. Lately, after her Wolf surfaced, I've been getting new feelings, in addition to mine. Sometimes, they come in echoes, and sometimes, the emotions proclaim themselves loudly. Every emotion that she felt, I felt too. The stronger the emotion was, the louder the imprint. I have scoured for days on end, trying to understand this situation, but the knowledge is proving evasive and quite frankly difficult to attain. I let out a rueful chuckle. Like her, everything else in my life related to her is unique and very intriguing.Something changed though, after she vomited earlier. There was a loud silence that filled the space where Calista’s emotions usually were. It was like she shut me off, and for the life of me, I have been trying to figure out if she did it on purpose o
“We are here” Tarla announces. We walk out of the forest into the same clearing I encountered Max earlier. Only, now, in front of the wolf statue, there is a huge arrangement of wood. I stare up at it wondering what it's going to be used for. With my luck, it's probably a Salem-style witch execution. Only, this time, I'm probably going to be the one that ends up getting sacrificed. “A classic burning at the stake” I mumble under my breath. From the amused look Tarla shoots at me, she heard me quite fine. “Where is here exactly?” I ask aloud “Here, is the pack centre” Tarla answers. “Great” I retort, looking around. There are a lot of people milling about, and I notice that there are children among them. The crescent shape of the buildings I realise serves as some sort of guide or reference. The middle of the crescent, where the statue of the wolf is, is tiled with red bricks. There is a distinct line of demarcation between where the red stops, and where the normal brown ground
A knock sounds on my door, waking me up from my sleep. I look around the room, disoriented but awake. Max is nowhere to be seen and I am on his bed.“He put me on the bed” I mumble quietly. A small smile graces my lips at his thoughtfulness. From the light reflecting into the room from the window, I realise it's still light out. “Ugh, this day is long enough” The knock sounds again, more insistent this time.“I'll be right there!” I call out, a little of the irritation I feel colors my voice. I get up and run my hand through my hair in hopes of reducing the awful bed she'd I no doubt have, but I wince upon getting my fingers caught in a tangle. Days of not running a comb through my hair have finally caught up with me, and I'm only grateful that when I first arrived someone put out clothes for me, but no one has had the initiative to repeat the action since then, and I was too preoccupied with my failed escape plan to demand more. I make a mental note to ask for more later.I yank th
From the corner of my eye, I watch Max approach me before he squats in front of me. He hands me a phone that I collect silently. The action brings our skin in contact with each other, and a zip runs through me. From the slight tensing in Max's body, I know he must have felt it too. I snatch the phone from his hands and clear my throat a little too loudly but Max only arches a perfect brow at me. “What?” I ask haughtily but he responds with a small laugh.“Nothing” He retorts, before going back to his position on the bed. “I expected a new phone you know?”“I already sent someone out to get you a new one” “What happened to my old one? were you able to recover it” “No, it was one of the things we went back to check for after we brought you back to the house, but it wasn't there” His words pique my curiosity “We or You?” I inquire carefully, his expression shifts to one of amusement “Me” “Huh” “What is it Calista,” he asks exasperatedly “Nothing at all” For some reason, I am s
For months now, I've been a passive observer in my own life, and if I'm being honest, I was totally and utterly fine with it. But now, it's no longer enough for me to just watch myself live my life like everything is happening to another person. It's time to take charge.I face Max squarely. “First, I going to need a phone. I need to text my Dad and my friend”“Done”“Second, I want to learn everything there is to know about why the rogue wolf came after me”“That was most likely an isolated incident,” he says. I scoff “If that's true, then I'm Jesus” To my surprise he huffs out a laugh. The action is so shocking, that it transforms his entire countenance“She's back” he mumbles, I don't know if he intended for me to hear or not, but I do and I choose to be the bigger person by ignoring the remark.“Look, that wasn't the first time I was attacked okay, on the day of the accident, there was a wolf” I correct myself “I mean, a Werewolf with red eyes. It also looked rabid, so I'm assu
The blackness tinges on the edge of my vision, seducing me, trying to draw me in. I don't fight it, in fact, I welcome it. Numbing myself to the emotion and the pain seems like the solution to all my problems right now. Not the best solution, but right now it's quicker. It's easier than dealing with the mess of my emotions.“We are going to have to talk Calista” Max is speaking to me, but his voice sounds like it's coming from far away. The world splits into two and one starts to seem more like a reflection of the other. My head goes quiet and a loud beep sounds in my ear. It's like my brain giving me a countdown before my body shuts down and loses consciousness. My eyes start flickering and the beep becomes louder, more insistent, I know that I'm going to drop in less than a minute. Max is still speaking, but I can't hear anything he is saying. I subtly angle my body so that when I fall, I fall backwards towards the chair. The beeping stops, and my eyes shut themselves of their ow
“No?” I ask, my face and tone mirroring the incredulity I'm feeling.“No” he repeats his low voice edged with finality and tinged with menace. “Take her back to the main building, and keep her there, I'll be with you shortly” My body locks up. “You wouldn't dare,” I say to him defiance lining my body. Everything goes silent and the small space between us goes taut with tension that could be cut with a butter knife. His blue eyes flash with anger before emotion drains out of it.Somehow I know that the Max standing before me is more dangerous than when he is angry. This Max looks like he could kill me without batting an eyelash. Awareness and fear race through me, but I block it out, refusing to acknowledge it.“Now,” he says, his voice cold and empty. From the corner of my eyes, I notice the way people around flinch at the tone of his voice. I almost pity them. Almost.“Yes, alpha” They incline their head, in a subtle bow and move towards me. I hurriedly back away from them. The s
