CHAPTER 3

Sitting on his leather couch, in front of him the central glass table with a glass of wine upon this one, Diego had his sight lost into the darkness of his soul.

That was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, but now he was there, sitting on his favorite couch, waiting for death to have mercy on him and take him with it.

The sleeves of his white shirt held up, the veins of his hands and neck were clearly shown and his mind was full of memories he couldn’t let just pass by.

Now he was married to some woman who one day sent her documents with one of his men and declared she was healthy to carry his baby. But nothing could come for free. She’d give him that baby he needed and he’d give her the money her family needed to save their name.

Neither that woman, who was his wife now nor his grandfather cared about the pain that was still in his heart. He had lost the love of her life, and no one cared about him.

Closing his eyes, Diego repressed his feelings.

“I love you, Elisa.” Diego said with a smile on his face.

“I love you, Diego.”

The air caressing their faces, the waves of the sea in front of them heating each other and Diego and Elisa had promised a destiny together.

“Be my wife. Marry me and I swear there’s nothing in life I won’t give you.”

“Be my husband. Marry me and I swear I’ll give you the son we’ve always wanted.”

And then, a kiss sealed that promise.

Somewhere he had lost his happiness and all that he had dreamed of with another woman. And being that way, wanting to forget everything, Diego stood up and called one of his men.

“Yes, sir? May I help you?”

“Go and pick her up. Scold her to the party. I’ll have been waiting for her.”

“Yes, Sir.”

7: 00 p.m., and Cameron changed for the dress that remained on the bed. She couldn't deny it, the man indeed had good taste. And a blank Mercedes Benz pulled over.

Eight thirty in the evening. She didn't show up. He was losing assurance that she would be able to attend this grand celebration. After all, they were husband and wife and as such, they had to behave in front of the world that already saw them and knew they had been married for days although the truth was that they had only been married for a few hours.

In his mind the last conversation he had had with her and the way he had told her that she should not believe the role of wife even though they were going to live under the same roof. How to do it? He didn't even know how to be a good husband if at the first challenge where he had to behave like a husband in love and look for the best dress for her, all he could do was take the first one he found when entering a mall, order the medium size and put it on a bed they were supposed to share.

Suddenly, Diego was taken by surprise to see one of her cars pull up right where he was doing his waiting. She was definitely doing her part and the least he could do was to do his if he wanted to make it all work.

Slowly, he watched his driver help the woman with long, blond, curly hair get out of the car and thank her with a beautiful smile on her face.

His breath caught even without his own knowledge. From the car, the elegant woman who was already his wife. Until that moment he managed to realize that rather than her arrival stealing his attention, it was that dress he had taken without even imagining how she would look in it.

The truth was that the dress fit her better than he would have thought.

"Are you ready?" Diego asked at once with an air of coldness. Cameron nodded. Even if she wasn't ready, it wasn't Diego's problem.

"I remind you that inside, everyone thinks we are in love. Behave like one." Diego informed her, giving her his arm so she could go in with him like that.

Cameron smiled. She wasn't going to let him make her feel less.

"Don't worry, Diego. I can fake it just fine."

And just like that, the doors seemed to open just for the newlyweds to enter. The smile that Cameron put on her face could have been the most beautiful and at the same time, the falsest one. She was married to the man by her side and the least she expected of herself was to believe that role. The role of unhappy bride perhaps.

In the blink of an eye, people came up to them just to express how happy they were for the young newlywed couple even though they hadn't been invited to the big wedding, surely.

The way the men admired Cameron's beauty did not take long to be said through words. All of them, every one of them didn't seem to see beyond the beautiful woman Diego Ferrer had chosen as his young wife, the same woman he would spend the rest of his days with whether he wanted to or not.

"Oh, it's good to see them so much in love!" said one of the women holding a glass of wine.

Cameron smiled as Diego thanked her.

"Diego, my friend!" He heard his name being called at once.

"Oh, my friend!" Diego called out.

And suddenly, the smile was wiped off Cameron's face little by little as she saw the man her husband embraced like that. That voice, that look, that smile. Even if the lights had been off, she would recognize him.

"Look, this is my wife," said Diego in the calmest way, "Her name is Cameron.

"How do you do, miss?" he extended his hand, causing her to react so that she could extend her hand to be kissed by him.

That man who never dared to look away while made his way to her hand had been the same one who had saved her from that embarrassment.

"Diego, son!" a third voice called, causing Diego to look behind him and lose himself in the caller.

"Sorry, man, I'll be back in a moment." Diego excused himself.

"Go easy."

By that time, it was just Cameron and that mysterious man who was no longer a mysterious man.

"So, are you Diego's wife?" He asked, still smiling.

Cameron nodded, trying to look cool.

"I never thought Diego would marry a woman... like you. You really surprised me.

That comment made her blood boil. "Is there a problem with that?"

The man took a drink from his glass. "No, it's just... You know, a man like him, it's hard for him to make a decision like that."

"If you have something to say to me, I invite you to say it without beating around the bush," said Cameron, resisting the urge to confront him loudly.

"No, I didn't mean that!" The man immediately changed his absurd attitude. "I'm really sorry, I've been a jerk who didn't know how to address a woman like you. Why don't you, to forget this bad moment, give me this piece? I doubt that Diego will come now." He looked at the man who seemed to be talking comfortably with two other men.

After all, it wouldn't be the first time. And those words being the ones that confirmed Cameron's suspicions, she realized that he had been the man she had danced with in the afternoon.

Cameron, thinking things over and looking at her husband, decided to continue with her life.

In the end Diego had been right, they were nothing more than a contract.

"Shall we go?" Cameron asked, extending her hand to him.

The man smiled. She was incredibly beautiful.

"Let's go." He answered, leading her to the dance floor. “Oh! By the way, my name is Ace.”

A dance was beginning, a life she was to live even within their marriage and a few feet away, that man who was awakened by the impulses of his heart that forced his gaze to the dance floor where his wife was dancing with her friend, that man named Ace.

Now that Diego realized it, there was something in that dance, there was something in the smile of the two of them, there was something in that dress she was wearing that showed the simplicity of her figure. He didn't understand how it was possible but his gaze was already only of the woman who moved naturally as she had done in the afternoon.

In Ace's mind there could be nothing else but that idea involving the woman he danced with in the most relaxed way ever known. Those waves, those vibrations, those emotions he felt Cameron emanated as they danced were difficult to put into words. In Ace's mind, how could Diego have married her? Not exactly talking about her beauty, but what she was by nature. How much longer until the thought entered his mind that she was Diego Ferrer's wife?"Do you enjoy it?" Ace asked as he saw her smile. The smile promptly disappeared from her face. If he had noticed that, surely the people around him had too, what were they going to say about seeing a married woman enjoying herself with someone else?"I keep thinking about it, I didn't think Diego would marry a woman like you.""What are you talking about?" Cameron asked, a little offended by Ace’s words."Did you see that picture in your room?"Cameron's heart stopped as her steps became clumsy. That man knew more than she thought she did."What

And suddenly, her delicate body jumped as if it were an involuntary movement. Little by little, second by second, feeling herself waking up in the new day, feeling that this was not her place although it was indeed her new home, her little big eyes were opening second by second. Moments from the night before began to come to her mind. Even she could not recognize the place at first glance because that ceiling, those decorations on the walls, those paintings and everything that made that room to be, had no room in her mind to be compared. The truth is that she felt like a guest, a woman who had slept in someone else's house just for one night. Without feeling the time pass, after rubbing her eyes for a brief moment, Cameron sat up in bed as she leaned back against the headboard. It was then that she realized that her dress, the same one she had worn the night before, was on the floor. That way, she finally managed to remember everything from that night. She had slept so soundly that

Those dreams, those illusions that she once had, those dreams with which she went to bed every night for every time she felt she was getting closer to her goal, today were nothing more than pieces of a life that never saw the light, that simply remained wanting to be just that, a life. The life that was no longer hers because it now belonged to the people who had married her to the man who had hurt her at that moment. There was nothing left, nothing left of that life that she had begun to build and that only remained in plans. From her beautiful eyes, tears came out the moment she understood who she was. The pain in the sole of her foot and a little higher up, made her stop almost as soon as she wanted to get up from the floor. She didn't know if what hurt more were the cuts on her feet or the way that man had treated her. Like another object, like that glass picture frame, like the broken glass that flooded the floor, she was her. No more than a woman with a broken life.Crawling awa

Wiping her tears roughly, tired of the fact that in only two days he had passed over her as he passed over any of the rugs in that house full of luxuries, she went after him. She had to listen to him, she had to make things clear because she was also a human being, a person who needed to be treated as such. There were rules in that house, she wasn't going to fight against that because in the end, Diego was right, their marriage was just a damn contract that she signed without her having the time to ask questions because for her grandfather, she had been nothing more than a damn object, a damn tool that he could handle at his whim and obviously, at his convenience."Diego, Diego," Cameron called after him.And he, without stopping, continued to the room they had to share whether he wanted to or not."Diego," Cameron continued calling. And without the slightest attention, Diego stopped more to think about where he had left his marriage papers than for her."What do you want, Cameron?" Two hours later Cameron’s eyes were tired of dancing here and there, watching people smile and talk to each other but no one who approached Cameron to ask if she needed something, or at least to know how she was doing at that moment.By his part, Ace hadn’t stopped watching her from afar. The desire to talk to her, or to dance with her burning inside of him made him go uncontrollable for an instant. He needed to feel that woman close to him like the evening when he saved her from an embarrassing moment and danced together. Of course a playboy like him couldn’t seat and talk about love. But seeing the situation between his friend Diego and Cameron gave him the right to break into their peace and play, play a little as he always did with women. If only Cameron would’ve known what Ace was thinking about her it surely had given a boost to her confidence for the first time. With her look clouded, Cameron and Renata were accompanied by each other, feeling the same pain. By that moment Renata knew the boy was her sister’s son, but it was Cameron the one who loved him as his own mother. The same went for Tita. They didn’t care if Tita was adopted or not, Tita was their baby. And very soon, Cameron’s baby as well.Around ten cars, counting patrols where Ace and Diego were travelling, they arrived to one of the loneliest forests. Ace had indicated them to drive there. He knew Camilla was going to take the kids there, since he’d talked to her some minutes ago like he agreed on the plan. The truth was police was with them. Ace was going to confess everything. When they found Camilla, she was with the two kids crying and screaming at the edge of a cliff. Tita and Gadriel were tied up. Police were there.“Please, Camilla, give me the kids. You can’t do this to them. You were the mother of two. Please, we can start over. Give me the kids!” Cameron begged on her kn

With tears in her eyes, Cameron begged for Susan to have mercy on her. It was pointless to still saying that she had nothing to do with that when it was clear that it was her handwriting that had been printed on those little pieces of paper. The following day after the wedding that didn’t take place in reality, all Cameron did was look for Susan until the next day she found her. And now they were, Cameron running behind her over the hallways, trying to talk her in the declaration against Ace if he was guilty of course. If police didn’t find anything against Ace, Diego was going to carry the heaviness of another five years for faking information. Cameron wanted to save him. Cameron wanted to be justice, the justice that didn’t reach Eliza earlier.“If you know something, you should say it!” Cameron said.Susan turned around. There was way she could declare against Ace. “Ace was fated to be with Eliza, but I was the one who came into their way. Ace and Eliza were the real protagonists of this story.” Diego started saying. “I fell for her just by silly conversations one day that Ace asked me to take care of his chat since he’d already had a fight with his soon to be wife, at least that was how he wanted it to happen. It was my mistake. I made her fall for me and when we met, I already knew she was going to come to me since I’d told her Ace was the real intruder, the friend of mine who was doing that favor of talking to her while I couldn’t. I changed the roles, Cameron. Cameron didn’t need to marry Ace when he was giving her the proof they needed to make Camilla get back to her place and Diego also have with he always loved by his side.In front of the cell where Bastian was, the other man who Camilla had talked with started studying him. His chest going up and down showed how much he’d run.“I can’t let this happen.”“You’re acting wild. You don’t know what’s wrong and what’s right now. You just see what you want to see. What made him think that she was going to help him get the hell out of here? Camilla had been clear enough when she said Bastian was no longer in her interests. She had put the eye on another man. Someone who was more interesting, more powerful or of course, more handsome. For Camilla, all those years, Bastian was her happy moment after having fought with Diego. He was her little break, her better than nothing, but eventually, even that little break he was for her ends up bothering more than the fights she could have with Diego. Bastian’s smile erased. “What are you trying to say?”“Maybe that you’ll stay here for some years if you still want to have power when you come out of here.”Bastian denied with his head.
