“You're awake.” A strange man in white muttered to Emily with a smile.

Emily frowned, wondering he was and where she was.

As her vision and sense of environment became clearer, she realized she was in the hospital and the strange man was a doctor.

She tried to sit up but was stopped by the doctor.

“Please, you need all the rest you can get.”

She frowned, looking around her and taking in the IV drip that was connected to her veins.

Her memory was hazy. She sought answers from the doctor.

“What happened?”

“You were involved in an accident Miss. You've been unconscious for three days.”

The memories came flooding back.

She remembered walking in on her sister and husband. She remembered her parents disowning her and her running away before she was blinded by the car lights.

Emily felt a chill down her spine as she recalled the painful accident.

“I've been unconscious for three days?”

“Yes,” the doctor replied,looking uncomfortable.

Emily wondered. It took a couple of minutes but she suddenly remembered.

“My baby? Is my baby fine?” She asked in a panicked tone.

He shook his head.

“I'm sorry Miss, your baby did not survive the accident.”

Emily felt her heart shatter.

“No, no!” She cried out in pain.

She yanked the IV off her hand.

“I want my baby, give me my baby.” She yelled out.

Two nurses ran into the room.

They stopped her from thrashing around and held her still.

“I'm sorry Miss, I have to sedate you. You're going to be fine.” The doctor spoke before injecting her.

“No” She mumbled before the darkness took over her.

When she woke up hours later, she was calmer.

A few tears rushed out of her eyes as she mourned the child she never got to meet.

Four years of waiting for a miracle and it was gone because of her family's betrayal.

Emily felt nothing but hatred for her former family. She wished nothing to do with them ever again.

For her dead child she was going to build herself and never let anyone hurt her again. She was done being a spare part and a fool. From that moment on, she vowed to always choose herself.

The doctor was happy to see her in a calm state.

He felt couldn't blame her for how she reacted earlier, after all losing a child was not a small matter.

“I'm glad you're doing much better, Miss.”

“Thank you” was all she muttered.

“All your hospital bills have been cleared by the man who brought you in.”

Emily remembered the silhouette she saw.

“Was he the one who hit me?”

The doctor replied “Yes. He was very sorry about the accident.”

She didn't seem to care much about it.

He handed her a phone.

“Your phone was damaged in the accident. All your information was recovered and updated on this one.”

Emily stared at the brand new iPhone.

“I'm really sorry for your loss.” The doctor muttered again.

She nodded.

“You've recovered pretty well. All you need is a day of rest and you will be discharged. If you need anything, ring the nurses. ”

As soon as he got to his office, the doctor took out his phone and dialed a number.

After the second ring, the other end picked up.

“She's awake and has recovered well.”

“I'll send someone to make negotiations.” a cold voice answered before the line went dead.

Emily turned on the new phone.

She was greeted by a flood of messages from her ex-family.

“Emily, do not be bitter. Quickly come and sign the divorce papers.”

“Emily, please come back. I know you feel guilty for pushing me. I forgive you.”

She laughed as she read more.

“Come back and sign the divorce papers so your sister can get married. It is not our family's way to give birth to a child out of wedlock.”

She laughed, wondering why she was still being referred to as family when she had been disowned.

“You cannot hide forever Emily. No matter what you do, I'll still marry Sophie. She's the one I love and she's the mother of my child. Something you could never do for me.”

She felt another wave of anger and quickly dialed Wesley's contact.

“Where h…” he began to talk but she cut him off.

“Where are the divorce papers? I want to sign them.”

He went silent for a couple of seconds, surprised by her eagerness.

“Come to the house. Don't try to play stupid games. I'll…”

She hung up on him.

Emily wondered what she was going to wear.

She remembered the doctor had asked her to ring the nurses if she needed anything.

When the nurse came, she quickly asked about her clothes.

The nurse explained they were damaged during the accident but a new set of clothes were purchased.

It was then, she realized the hospital room had a wardrobe.

She realized she must have been in one of the VIP rooms.

Immediately, she got out of bed and grabbed the change of clothes.

“What are you doing? You can't leave Ma'am . You've not been discharged.” the nurse protested.

“I have an emergency.” She announced, while changing up.

The nurse tried to stop. “I'm sorry but you cannot leave ma'am. The doctor will not be pleased.”

Emily buttoned her jeans before running her hands through her hair.

“Tell the doctor I left on my own. Please , can you help with any spare cash? You can put it on my hospital bills.”

The nurse was hesitant.

Emily begged. “Please, I was in an accident. I had nothing on me.”

The nurse pulled out some wards of cash and gave it to her.

“Please wait, let me get the doctor.”

Emily received the money with a smile.

“Thank you. I'll wait.”

A few minutes after the nurse left, she sneaked out of the hospital.

She pounded harshly on the door to what used to be her home.

Wesley opened the door with a frown. She pushed past him into the house.

“Where are the papers?”

Wesley eyed her suspiciously.

“Where have you been?”

She shot him a glare. “It's none of your business. Where are the damn papers?”

“Oh my God!! Emily, I'm so glad you're fine. I've been so worried about you.” Sophie spoke in her fake voice.

Emily spotted the papers in her hand.

She snatched the papers, ignoring her fake sign of concern.

She hastily signed the papers and threw it back at her.

“Emily, you don't have to be this rude. Mom and dad didn't mean what they said. You can go back to the house. I've helped you pack your things.

Emily eyed her. “You can take it, just like you've taken him. I want none of it.”

She began to walk away but Sophie yelled “Wait.”

Emily was shocked when Sophie walked to her, waving some cash.

“What's this for?”

“I and Wesley want to get married at once. I want you to go and change your surname. It would be awkward if you're still bearing his name after we get married.”

Emily was disgusted by her. “I don't need your money.”

“For goodness sake Emily, take the money. You have no money or where to go. Take it and quit being proud.” Wesley yelled in irritation.

Emily chuckled. “You can shove your money down your ass. I never want to see or hear from either of you again.”

She stormed out of the house.

Wesley was right about one thing. She didn't have where to go or know what to do.

Just as she was lamenting, the new phone began to ring and an unknown number flashed across the screen.

With everything that had happened to her over the past few days, she didn't know how to respond to that. “I'm…Errm….I think I'm

Emily's eyes widened at the time on her phone. She quickly threw the sheets aside and jumped out of bed. She dashed straight for the bathroom, not believing she had overslept on her first day of work. She dialed Ava's number before grabbing the toothbrush. Ava picked up on the first ring. “Ava, please promise you didn't leave without me.” Emily said in a panicked tone. Ava chuckled. “Relax Cupcake, I couldn't bring myself to wake you up. You looked so peaceful in your sleep.” Emily paused the hard scrubs against her teeth. “Ava!! It's my first day at work. How can I be so late? I could get fired.” She could already imagine Ava rolling her eyes. “Ummh, did you wake up with partial amnesia? I'm your boss, who's gonna fire you?” Ava didn't give her the chance to utter a word before adding, “Just take your time and get to work when you can. I left you some cash for a cab-fare on the kitchen counter. Gotta go, Love you.” Without giving Emily the time to protes

“Such a jerk!!” Ava murmured with a scoff. Emily could do nothing but bite her lips in guilt. She had conveniently omitted the identity of the arrogant traffic man during her narration. Unaware of her brother's involvement, Ava continued. “He's lucky it wasn't me. I would have yelled back and showed his arrogant ass how bad a road rage can be.” Emily swallowed hard in guilt. She wondered how her friend would react if she knew her pompous brother was the asshole. “I'm just glad I'm finally here.” She said, hoping it would put an end to the conversation. It worked. Ava's brows dramatically tweaked up, “Ready for your first day huh?” she asked with a wide grin. Emily took in a shaky breath. “Yeah” Ava had her assistant take Emily to her new office. The open office had low-walled glass cubicles that demarcated working spaces. She scanned the faces who were all glued to her figure while the assistant made the introduction. It was brief

“Good evening Miss Byrce, I'm Branson Clark.” Emily took a step back while scanning the stranger before her with great alarm. He noticed her uneasiness right away and offered a slight smile. “I'm sorry for just barging on you. Like I said, I'm Brason Clark and I'm a lawyer.” He pulled out his business card and ID, stretching to her for confirmation. Emily's eyes scanned both cards, yet it did little to settle the uneasiness or questions in her mind. “I represent the man who was involved in your accident.” Before she could muster up a reaction, he quickly added. “Can we sit and discuss? There's a coffee shop round the corner.” The way he spoke and gazed at her made her feel he expected her to not object.Emily took in the short man again. His confident gaze, well-tailored suit and expensive Rolex gave away his high-end lawyer identity. A part of her wanted to walk away but the curious cat in her won the battle. “She What?” Alex thundered at Chris. It was the same reaction Chris had anticipated which was why he took his sweet time in relaying the news. “She declined the settlement.” he reiterated. Alex's face crumbled into a deeper frown. “How much did you offer her?” he asked, not believing the greed of this woman. “It was a blank check.” For the first ever, Chris watched an expression other than a frown fall on his boss’s face. Alex was genuinely surprised. “Why?” the word slipped out before he realized it.. “She said she wants the whole matter to be forgotten and left in the past.” The answer only left him feeling more intrigued. From what Ava had told him, he knew she was freshly divorced and living with Ava. Why would someone so broke decline a life changing offer? His suspicion about Emily increased. “Did you dig into her background?” An alarm bell went off in Chris’ head. “No,” Alex shot him a dirty glare. “I want every inch of her background

Her face lit up with excitement. They say opportunity comes but once and she had every intention of making use of her opportunity. As she got into the elevator with Alex, she couldn't help but take peeks at his cold hard face. He was perfect in every aspect. A baby from him would be her ticket out of hard life and she was going for that ticket. The elevator door stopped at a small hallway with no one in sight. It was at the top of the building and had two exclusive bedrooms the club had reserved for him and Ezra. Although Ezra made use of his every night, it was the first time Alex was going to use his. He walked quietly while her heels noisily lagged behind him. He placed his hand on a pad beside the door. It scanned his fingerprints and the door automatically opened up. The room was dimly lit, spacious and consciously decorated in a way that was meant to stimulate sexual drive. She took in the luxurious room, smiling to herself at the feeling of the soft bed

“OMG!! He's trending again!!” “Who?” “Mr Hasting. Everyone check your phones.” The commotion was enough to momentarily pull Emily away from work. She glanced at her chatty coworkers and decided it was probably them fawning over Alex again. She had barely refocused on work when Sean ran to her with the juicy news. “Have you seen it?” Before she could mutter a response, he cut her off. “Forget it. Judging by the look on your face, you haven't seen it. Here.” he spoke, placing his phone in her hands. She was left with no choice than to watch the so-called trending video. A first glance at it, and she couldn't help but cringe at the sight of Alex kicking someone away. “Why does he always have to be horrible?” she thought to herself in disgust and disbelief. The camera zoomed in on the woman's face and Emily's brain lit up in recognition. It was Kelly Riggs, the same author that had just been dropped by the company. Kelly had been dropped after a vi

Panic drenched over her like a bucket of cold water. Holding her bump with the utmost care, she whispered “My baby.” Her heart hammered loudly against her chest while her mind ran wild with different thoughts. With slow steps, she walked to the couch and sat down, still trembling with fear. She began to call Wesley again. It went straight to voicemail— a few more rings and it ceased to connect. She took the phone from her ear and stared at the screen with surprise. He blocked her! Knowing time was of the essence, she moved to the next available person–Jane. After two missed calls, Jane's grumbling voice echoed through the phone. “What?” Sophie took in a breath of relief. “Thank God, Jane! Something’s happened.
