EVE'S POV
"What is going on?" I asked when Morgan didn't offer any explanation about the sudden change in our means of transport.
"Whose car is this?", I added.
He shifted in his seat to look at me.
"Since it's your first day at work, I wanted to do something special for you. So I hired this car to pick you up”.
I didn't know what to say at first. Of course, the only way he could pick me up with such an expensive car was if he rented one. But why would he go to such an extent? We weren't even a real couple.
Still, it warmed my heart that he wanted to do something special for me on my first day at work.
“Thanks" I said to him.
"It's a nice ride", I added.
It was better than nice. It was the kind of car only the very wealthy drove, and I knew that meant the renting f*e had to be quite high. While it was nice that he thought to do this for me, I couldn't ignore the financial implication. I was out of cash and he was making money on a part-time job. We just couldn't afford to splurge on unnecessary luxuries, no matter how much I loved the idea of how shocked Cindy must have been when the car showed up.
"I'm glad you like it" he told me.
"But you shouldn't spend so much money on something like this. Since we are cash strapped at the moment" I said.
"Of course" he agreed.
"I just wanted to do something to celebrate your new job”.
MORGAN'S POV
It was interesting to listen to Eve being all practical about our finances. I had never had to think twice before spending my own money, because I always had enough to buy whatever I wanted.
Her reaction to my story about hiring the car told me one thing, which was that this was probably not her first time running out of cash. It was as if she was used to it, and knew how to use money sparingly until her next payday. It wasn't a skill I would have expected a wealthy heiress to have. And once again, I couldn't help but think that maybe her money issues were tied to the fight with her family.
EVE'S POV
The next morning, I took a bus to work. The company was far away from where we lived, and by the time I got to the company, I felt exhausted. It was the complete opposite of the previous evening on the way home. Riding the Maybach had been pleasant and comfortable, and I had felt completely relaxed by the time we got home.
I thought back to the experience fondly and wished I could enjoy such a relaxing ride after a long day at work. But I guess it could only be a wish, neither I nor Morgan had the money to travel like that daily.
The bus ride wouldn't be so tiring if our house was near the company, but that was something else I couldn't do anything about at the moment.
Moving closer to the city would cost a lot of money, and I couldn't afford that at the moment. So I would have to make do with the bus and the subway for now.
When I got to the company, I found out that the department director, Mr Gray, wanted to meet me.
Mr Gray supervised all the designers in my department and made important decisions concerning projects.
When I walked into his office, he stood up from his desk and came around to shake my I'mhand.
"Good morning, Ms Luciano. Welcome to the Edwards Group. How are you liking it so far?".
I gave him my hand in greeting and a smile.
"Thank you, sir. I'm settling in well, thanks”.
I expected him to let go of my hand soon after, but he didn't. Instead, he gripped my hand tightly in his and ran his eyes over me, from head to toe.
There was nothing casual or professional about his probing gaze, he was checking me out blatantly.
"That's good to hear" he said.
"I'm happy to have you in my department. I hope we will work well together”.
"Yes, sir" I agreed, and tried to free my hand.
It wasn't even half a minute since I met him and yet he was already making my skin crawl.
When his eyes lifted back to my face, the look in them made me want to throw up. They were leery, and I knew right away I would have to do well to avoid contact with him. If I could though, after all he was the department head.
Well, nothing much happened at work today and as nature may have it, it was the end of my work for the day.
Another long bus ride in the evening after work left me wishing for a shower and to head straight to bed.
That desire multiplied when I thought of the next day, how i would have to go through the same routine. I could do with all the rest I could get.
Morgan was already in the house when I got back, sitting on the couch. Taking off my shoes when I walked over and took a seat next to him. Not actually taking a seat, I fell back onto the sofa. Then closed my eyes, planning to rest for a while before taking a shower.
"Are you okay?" Morgan's voice interrupted the silence.
"Yeah. Just tired”, I replied.
“Work?”, he asked
"The commute" I said.
Work had been okay, if I just ignored the early morning interaction with Mr Gray.
"It's a long ride”. I added.
"Oh. In that case, we can rent a house near the city company", he offered.
MORGAN'S POV
I hadn't planned on making such an offer, but then again, I hadn't expected her to look so weary after work. I could only imagine how tired she was, making the long commute to and from work. I had helped her get the job...so I could as well do this too.
It wasn't part of the plan, though. The only reason I had found the house we were currently living in was to put her off. If we were to move closer to the company, it would be somewhere around the city centre, and the houses there were modern and expensive. Of course, if Iwas to find such a house for her and still wish to keep my true identity concealed, I would have to find a good excuse.
She opened her eyes and turned her head to look at me.
"The rent in the city centre is very high. We can't afford it”.
"It's only your second day at work and look how weary you already are," I said.
"If you're tired like this every day, it might affect your performance at work. Don't worry, I'll look hard for a house with a reasonable rent that's closer to the company".
"Even if you can find one, I don't think I will be able to pay for it with my current situation," she pointed out.
"I'll look for a way around that too" I assured her.
"I know a lot of people who can help me find a good house and make an arrangement for rent".
"You're quite resourceful, aren't you?" She asked, smiling at me.
"If you could really find an affordable house near the company, I'Il be really grateful”. She said
EVE'S POV
As I settled back on the sofa, I felt a bit relieved. Morgan sounded like he was serious about looking for another house. But even better, he sounded confident about finding one.
Just the idea that I wouldn't have to put up with the long commute for much longer was enough to make me feel a bit less tired.
EVE'S POV In the evening of my third day at the Edwards Group, Daniel appeared at my desk when it was time to go home. I hadn't seen much of him for the past two days now, besides when we had lunch together. Part of it was because I was avoiding him actively. Even though Morgan had accepted my explanation about our relationship, I didn't want to risk another misunderstanding. The other reason was because we weren't in the same departments and were both busy at work. When he appeared, I was gathering my things, ready to leave. Most of my co-workers had already left."l came by to see if you want us to get off work together?", Daniel asked when he got to my desk. The request was innocent enough, I suppose. But I couldn't help thinking about the last time we had left the building together. When I hesitated, he added. "l haven't seen much of you these last couple of days, I was hoping to catch up. You can tell me about how you're getting along with work."I appreciate his concern, I r
MORGAN'S POV "The landlord is on the line," the realtor said, holding his phone toward Eve. "You can talk to him", he added .As soon as Eve took the phone and turned away, the man gave me a wink, which was a sign that everything was going smoothly.**EVE'S POV **"Hello, I’m looking at an apartment here and I'm made to understand that the rent is only three hundred bucks?", I said into the phone."That's right" the man on the phone replied. "l know it sounds shocking, but I'm about to move abroad and wanted to get tenants before I leave. I figured I would get a tenant quickly if I lowered the rent”, he added."Oh" I muttered. That kind of made sense, I guess. If the landlord was moving abroad, it made sense that he would lower the rent to quickly attract a tenant. But you know, I still think the rent was too low, but as long as the landlord had confirmed it, I was willing to let it be."Feel assured and take the house" the landlord continued. "l was very happy to get a call tha
EVE'S POV When Morgan didn't seem to pay attention to my plea, I grasped his arm and pushed it away. I was clearly only going to get out of this by having to."Just a sec" he said, his voice gentle. I went still as he reached up and touched my forehead, then wiped his palm over my skin. "You've got a bit of sweat here.""Oh" I mumbled, my face going hot. Was that it? He just wanted to wipe my forehead? He should have said so earlier. And here I was, getting wild ideas.MORGAN'S POV I could barely keep my lips from splitting into a wide grin. So maybe I enjoyed seeing her frazzled by my proximity a little too much. And I was also guilty of enjoying having her trapped in my arm a lot. But I couldn't help it, she was just too adorable.I half-expected her to keep pushing against me after I said I was wiping her sweat, but she didn't. Instead, she stilled and let me go ahead, her struggle gone. What had she thought I was going to do?."Are you done?" she asked after a few seconds, g
EVE'S POV I picked up the form and ran my fingers around the edges nervously. "Even if there are side effects, they said that they will compensate me",He gave me a look that suggested he thought that was ridiculous."And you believed them?","It's in the registration form”, I defended. His brow furrowed. "Let's say they are not lying, what if the drug has serious side effects on your health? Are you okay with that, just because they'll compensate you? What if you suffer permanent effects?","Many people have done this before," I said, trying to calm him down. I couldn't understand why he was so angry about it. "You're overthinking, I'Il be fine", I said."Overthinking?" he scoffed. "Don't you care about your health at all?","I need the money, okay?", I told him finally, dropping my gaze to the floor. "I need money urgently and this was the best option I could find”,"What?", he asked, his voice full of disbelief."You're putting yourself in danger because of money?”,I clench
EVE'S POVI blanched at his words. ‘Get this out of the way?’ If somebody else had heard him, they would think he was talking about something like doing the dishes."I cannot have my wife do something as dangerous as participate in a drug trial" he said."Out there, everybody knows you are my wife. So if I have to act like a gangster to stop you from doing something stupid, I will”,A gangster? What does he mean?.His hand shot out again towards the zip of my dress. I held my hands in front of my self to stop his advance. "Okay, fine! I won't take part in the trial", I accepted my defeat. His eyes dug into me. "Are you only saying that so that I'll let you go?",Well, yes, I didn't like how he was acting, and I was going to say anything to get him to back off. "You're right, it was not the best idea. I will stop" I told him."If you're lying, I'll find out" he warned me.l glared at him silently but said nothing. I exhaled in big relief when he stepped back. What a day!***********
MORGAN'S POV Well, seeing that our precious moments was gone, I went for the next best thing, her bed.Walking past her, I threw my body onto her bed, resting my back against the headboard. I lifted my legs onto the mattress and took one pillow in my hands. This way, her sweet fragrance surrounded me."Wh...what are you doing?" She stuttered, turning to regard me. The embarrassment on her face was still evident, her ears red from how hard she was flushing. I enjoyed how flustered she appeared, but I wasn't going to mention it."Tell me what happened. What was so good that you had to scream?”, I said instead of answering her question. "I can tell you in the living room," she said, her attention still on the fact that I was still lying on her bed as if I belonged there. EVE'S POV Was I the only one who thought he was crossing a boundary?."I'm okay here", he said, cradling my pillow in my arms.I couldn't exactly physically eject him from the bed, so I gave up and took a seat on my
EVE'S POV When the assistant took back the shirt, I turned and headed towards where the two were standing. They stopped talking when they saw me approaching, but unfortunately for them, I had already heard everything."Excuse me, can you please stop mocking us? We came here to shop and it's quite unpleasant when you two are standing here making insulting remarks”, I said. The two exchanged a look, and then faced me. One of them frowned. "I'm sorry, what are you talking about?" She asked that with a confused expression, as if she truly had no idea what I was talking about.“l could hear you two clearly. So don't bother acting like you don't know what I'm talking about. Is this how you treat customers here?" I told them,"Customers are people who buy clothes here. You two are obviously just here to waste everybody's time. Look around and ask yourself if this looks like a store you should be in”, the other one said, not interested in playing pretend like her co-worker.I clenched my han
MORGAN'S POV "It's not in your place to tell us how to do our jobs," the manager snapped at Eve, taking a step towards her. "I'm telling you now, if you and your husband don't leave right away, we'll detain you and call the police to take you away”,Seeing that the argument was getting heated, and that Eve seemed ready to lash out at the manager, I grabbed her arm and pulled her back to my side. "It's okay. Just let him be", I whispered to her,She looked up at me, her face troubled, her nostrils flared, betraying the fact that she was truly worked up and barely holding on to her civility by a thread. "You heard what he said;' she told me, as if she couldn't understand why I was asking her to back off. "He is making false accusations to humiliate us. We cannot let him treat us like that","Why don't you listen to your husband? He seems to understand what's going on," the manager butted into our conversation, sounding smug.Immediately, Eve tried to break from my grasp to confront
