EVE'S POV
"Let go of me!" Claire demanded, grabbing at a desk and digging her heels into the floor to keep me from dragging her any further.
"What do you think you are doing?", she screamed.
"What are you afraid of?" I asked, not releasing my grip around her arm.
"You said that you saw us with your own eyes. We are only going to confirm with the director”,
"You are crazy. This is harassment, I can report you to the HR..”, Claire accused
"I will accompany you to show them the video of you slandering me", I informed her.
When we were almost at the director's office, the door burst open and Mr Gray appeared, a frown on his face.
GRAY'S POV
I looked around at the gathered workers, and then my eyes zeroed in on Eve and Claire.
"What on earth is going on here?" I demanded.
Seeing that I was here already, Eve let go of Claire and faced me
"Claire is spreading rumours that you and I went to a hotel together last night”,
My face paled at her words.
Where on earth had such a rumour come from?
I had been trying to seduce Eve in secret, and now there was a loudmouth ruining everything for me?.
"So we came to ask about your whereabouts last night to clarify things”, Eve continued, her eyes focused on me.
As my face darkened with anger as I looked at the woman standing next to Eve, I arranged my thoughts.
I couldn't let her ruin my reputation before I got Eve where I wanted her.
"What are you talking about?", I asked Claire, my voice firm.
"I spent the night at home with my wife, and she can confirm that. Why are you making up rumours about Ms Luciano and I?"
Everybody went quiet while Claire faced the floor.
"I'm sorry, sir. I must have mistaken someone else for you”,
I stepped towards her, my face stormy.
"Such nonsense will not be tolerated in my department. If you have so much to say, maybe you should move to the marketing department, they can do with your story-spinning talent over there",
Claire bent her head further.
"It won't happen again, sir. I'm truly sorry",
I looked around at everyone.
"This show is over, you can get back to work. If I catch anyone else spreading malicious rumours at work, they'll face the consequences”,
EVE'S POV
Mr Gray turned and marched back into his office.
Claire left the office and hurried towards the bathroom. While I finally felt relieved, as I was certain that after this, Mr Gray wouldn't try to pursue me anymore.
After announcing to everyone that him seducing me was a story formed in Claire's imagination, he wouldn't do anything that would get people talking again.
When he left, instead of going back to our desks as instructed, the crowd burst into excited whispers.
Before l could get back to my desk, I caught sight of Daniel walking into the office.
On seeing me, he hurried over, a concerned look on his face.
"Are you okay?" he asked, looking around at the gathered workers and then focusing back on me.
"I got your message”, he added.
"I'm fine. I wanted to ask you to clarify something if you don't mind. Someone started a rumour about my character in college..",
"I've heard about it”, he told me, his expression softening.
"Of course, I'll set things straight”, he added.
"Thank you," I told him, feeling grateful.
"Good afternoon, Mr Sean. What are you doing in our department?", one of my colleagues asked, approaching us.
"There are false rumours being peddled around about my junior, so I came to clear them up", he replied.
My colleague looked from Daniel to me and back.
"You are..you are the schoolmate she was talking about?",
Daniel nodded and gave me a fond look.
"Yes. I was her senior in college, So I know all about her character. Everything you've heard is nonsense”,
I smiled gratefully at him while the crowd burst into whispers again. Everybody's attention was now on Daniel, and with the way they were all looking at him, I knew they believed him.
"Claire really made all that up", someone said.
"But fortunately, both the director and Mr Sean have cleared things up”,
"Yeah, poor girl. What did she ever do to Claire?",
These and more rumors, kept hanging in the air.
"My junior has always been an honest, kind, and hard-working person," Daniel said loud enough for everyone to hear.
"She is also very talented, so many people are jealous of her. Maybe that's what is bothering Claire”,
"Maybe because she's really pretty too", someone else added, and the crowd burst into chuckles.
"Thank you, Daniel," I told him.
"I don't know how I can make it up to you”,
"Don't worry about that. I told you to come to me if you came across any trouble, didn't I I'm always happy to help”,
l felt really grateful in my heart and wished I could do something to thank him. This was the second time he had come to me rescue, and he never asked anything in return.
********************
The next day when I got to work, I received the good news that Claire had been demoted and transferred to an insignificant department.
I was relieved that I would no longer be working in the same office with someone who hated me so much.
After humiliating her the previous day in front of our coworkers and director, there was no telling that she could have done something much worse to get back at me.
"I'm so happy that you stood up to her" the coworker who had given me the news about Claire's demotion said.
"Everybody is happy that she is gone”,
Puzzled, l asked,
"Really?"
She nodded.
"She was always stirring in the office and backbiting others. She despised everyone who did better than her. With her gone, this department will be a lot more peaceful”,
I had no idea that Claire was used to treating everyone like that. Indeed, nobody liked working around someone like that.
"You are so brave," another coworker said, perching on the corner of my desk.
"Nobody ever had the guts to stand up to her. What you did yesterday was amazing!",
"You are our hero", the first coworker said, grinning.
I laughed and dismissed them with a shake of my head.
"You guys are just exaggerating. People like her prey on those they think cannot stand up to them. If you stand up to them, often, their lies crumble in the face of the truth. I couldn't stand by and let her tarnish my name, so l had to act",
My co-workers nodded.
"You have inspired me you know. The next time someone tries to create rumours about me, I'll not cower. I'll face them and ask them for proof!. I might even bite out their ear",
The three of us burst into laughter at her enthusiasm. For the first time since Claire started spreading rumours about me, this was the first time I felt completely at ease in the office.
My colleagues were now talking to me freely, with no one throwing me suspicious glances. I only hoped that this new peace would last.
After dealing with Ella from the time I had my intervievw, I had thought I wouldn't make any more enemies at work, only for Claire to fill that space.
Now, I hoped that my encounters with co-workers who were hell-bent on slandering me were all done.
EVE'S POV After the incident with Claire, Mr Gray stopped making advances towards me. He no longer called me to his office frequently or offered to help me with my work. This convinced me that he had given up, and I was finally able to relax fully. But now, it caught me by surprise when he approached me one evening after work and asked me to join him to have dinner with a client. My heart.sank as I realised that he had not given up. Instead, he had been biding his time."I'm sorry, but I cant join you," I rejected his invitation politely, hoping he would let it go. I gathered my stuff into my bag, wanting to make an escape quickly. But Mr Gray stepped in my way. "You should come with me, Ms Luciano. I want to introduce some resources that can help you a lot here at work”,"Thank you for the consideration, but I really can not go with you. I have urgent matters to attend to, so I have to leave right away", I told him."Do you think I wasted my time coming here to ask you to come wi
GRAY'S POV I cursed and turned around, wondering who it was that had the nerve to barge in the room to interrupt me. In front of me was a tall dark-haired man giving me a cold glare. He wasn't familiar to me. And I was sure none of the men who were outside drinking with their dates would have interrupted me. He also didn't look like a security guard, I mean he was wearing a suit and a long coat like an office worker.Supporting myself on my hands, I got up and faced him, sneering. "Who the fuck are you?", I wasn't about to let anyone ruin this for me.EVE'S POV When Mr Gray suddenly released me and fell backwards, I shot up from the bed, thinking that perhaps one of the people in the room outside had finally come to help me. But when my eyes fell on Morgan instead, a happy cry left my Iips as I crawled over the bed and to him.He took me in his arms and held me close as I hid my face in his chest, sobs causing my entire body to shake. I could hardly believe he was here, but he t
EVE'S POV Morgan let go of my face and looked away. "I was in the company of a friend”, he replied to my question."Oh", I muttered, remembering how the men in the private room had all been there with women in their arms. What was Morgan doing there? Had he also been there with a lover? Did he flirt with the women there? These thought botherede, but I didn't let it show on my face."I'll go and take a shower", I told him, getting to my feet. He nodded and shifted to let me leave the sofa.In the bathroom, I stood under the shower for a long time, enjoying the feel of the cascading water over my skin. Even though Mr Gray hadn't succeeded in touching me the way he wanted, I still found myself scrubbing my skin thoroughly. Somehow, I felt as if washing thoroughly would not only wash away any trace of his touch on me, but also wash away the memory of what happened.By the time I was done, I felt a lot better. My body had also stopped trembling. It wasn't until I was stepping out of
EVE'S POV When Morgan’s finger tugged on the towel and it became a little loose, I snapped out of the trance he had distracted me into. My face flushed fresh, and as my mind rattled back into work-mode, I realised how precarious my situation was. I had let this go too far.Pushing Morgan's hand away, I ducked under his arm and reached for my door. This time, he didn't stop me as I twisted the handle and pushed the door open. I slammed it closed behind me, as if to further emphasise that I was not up for whatever he had in mind.Rushing to my mirror, I pressed my hands to my face and took deep breaths. I had no idea who I was more pissed at, him for teasing me in my state of undress, or myself for giving him any sign that I liked it.It seemed that I was getting too comfortable with him and forgetting that not only was he my pretend husband, but that I was also deceiving him about my identity. Nothing could happen between us, as long as I was living a lie.MORGAN'S POV Outside the
EVE'S POV On my way home from work that evening, I came across Morgan jogging in the community. He was dressed in a pair of running shorts that left his long muscular legs exposed, and a t-shirt that made it easy to imagine the muscular physique hidden beneath.Soon enough, my thoughts went to forbidden territory, and I stopped them and focused on the matter that had been on my mind all day. Morgan was the only person from last night who knew my identity and who took the incentive to stop Mr Gray. So there was a high probability that he was the one who had reported him to the police."How was work?" he asked when he got to me and fell into step with me on our way home."It was good”, I said, and then looked up at him."Some officers came in the morning and arrested the director. Are you the one who went to the police with the surveillance video from last night?","Oh, they did?”,I nodded approvingly. "Good. Yes, I'm the one who gave them the video”, "Thank you so much. You won't
MORGAN’S POV The moment Eve pressed her lips to mine, the little restraint that was keeping me from doing something that could have her running into her room snapped.Even if I was determined to not do such a thing, the frenzied passion that surged through my body the moment she kissed me made sure that my efforts were futile.Wrapping my arms around her body,I picked her up and walked to the sofa, our lips still pressed together. The fact that she didn't pull away or push me away through all that, assured me that she wanted this as much as I did.I only separated us as I lay her down on the sofa and hovered above her. Her eyes fluttered open to look at me, and then she nibbled on her bottom lip shyly. Had she known what accepting my request for a kiss could lead to? Or had she thought it was an innocent request?."You're too naive," I whispered as I brought my lips down to hers. This time, I kissed her urgently, my firm lips prying her soft ones apart. She submitted to my kisses,
EVE'S POV Muffled sounds, filtered through the door of the room on the first floor, a mixture of groans, moans, and grunts. Inside the room, a man drove his hips between the legs of his lover, chasing an orgasm."Keep it quiet" Jake groaned as his lover's moans took a new high tone, as he drove deeper into her. "Someone can probably hear you in the hallway!"The woman looked up at him. "Who cares? Maybe I should scream so Eve can hear us. It looks like you need a little help in breaking up with her."Jake squeezed his eyes tight and focused on the pleasure building in his abdomen. I clearly was the last thing he wanted to talk about while making out with my sister."Why are you still with her, anyway? You have me. why do you still keep that worthless woman around?"Jake pulled his strength out of Cindy, and when his tip was on the very edge, thrust came back into her. A loud gasp left her mouth as he picked up the pace of his thrusts. She threw her head back as he took her hard.
EVE'S POV I twisted my fingers on my lap, and casted another look past the seated guests at the entrance of the gardens, where my wedding was taking place. My brow furrowed slightly when there was no sign of Morgan Caruso or any of his family members. The ceremony had been supposed to start two hours ago. All the guests from my side of the family were already here, but not one from the groom's side. Now, I was reduced to nerves as I sat and waited. Was he going to make it? I had never met him, but I had heard that he was an idler. What if he decided to not show up? Firstly I was been forced into marrying a stranger only to have him ditch me at the altar… All this not long after what happened with Jake and my sister. The two were seated on the front row, and I was doing my best to ignore them. Cindy had been stuck to Jake's side since they arrived, and a few comments had been thrown around about what a beautiful couple they were. But I tried not to let it get to me. While it stil
