“Fuck! My instincts are clawing at me to go back in that room, sit at her feet, and beg like the dog I am.” Kaden curses when we step out into the hall. “It was the right call to leave, right?”

“My instincts are riding me hard too. But we can’t bully her into accepting us. We’ve done enough of that already and look where that got us.” A healthy dose of self-loathing accompanies those words.

“Right. Okay. I’ll give her some time, but I meant what I said. I’m not staying away. I’m going to stay right here until she’s ready to go home then follow to make sure she gets there safely. What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her, right?”

“I’m not sure she’d agree with that statement.” I huff a wry laugh. “But I get where you’re coming from. Probably won't sleep tonight anyway, but I definitely won’t if I don’t know she’s tucked in safe and sound.”
