A soothing music played at a restaurant in the dark, cool evening. Customers in the restaurant discussed in high spirits, but the restaurant was soundproofed to prevent a racket. Waiters and waitresses sailed around the restaurant, serving their customers.
Nothing was more nerve-racking, awkward and embarrassing to June than having dinner at a restaurant with the man who now owned Asrijet. What would people say about it? June forced herself to be happy, smiling at everything he said at the table while her mind wondered his intentions.
Tally barely took her eyes off Anthony. She sort of doubted if she had met face-to-face with such a beauty before. His kissable, reddish-pink lips mesmerized the sense out of her. Was she to focus on his killer blue eyes, sparking her brain with every glimpse he shot her way, or his ripped body that fought to tear his grey shirt open. She could not imagine pulling on his neatly combed-back, dirty blonde hair while they kiss under the shower. She'd never admired a man that much, he was the first.
“I was thinking —” A sheepish smile surfaced on Pinky’s face. “When are you two going to get married?” Her lips twisted, she anticipated the worst response because she thought her question was inappropriate.
Kayla glanced at Pinky for having asked such an unnerving question. Then she continued eating, she believed there was certainly no answer to Pinky's question. Marry an iron-fist? Hah! Pinky really needed to work on her mouth.
“Well —” Anthony worked his gaze to Pinky. Every eye at the table was on him, waiting to hear his response. But Kayla focused on her food — eating was a way she forced herself to stick to rule number one. Kayla missed catching the intention in Anthony's eyes, which June detected when he looked her way. That glint in his eyes offered June the feeling he was up to something unpleasant. “Our marriage is in seven days.”
His words hit Kayla's with a shock that swiveled her head to him, gazing in a daze. Anthony wasn't looking back at her, as if he meant to taunt her with those words. Anthony said that to test her, right? Whether Anthony meant those words or not, the impression it made on her felt like there was a time bomb wrapped around her waist. She downed the wine in her glass and pulled a smile to her face to mask her uneasiness.
“Is it true, Kayla?” Sam asked.
“Uhm…” Kayla had been struggling to hide her emotions, Sam almost kicked her out of her leash with that question. She gripped a fork and a knife to repress her uneasiness. She thought that Anthony joked about what he said, why wasn't he saying anything to prove his words were lies? “Well…” She glanced at Anthony, who offered her a smile she deemed evil.
“But seven days is not enough time to prepare a grand wedding, or — is it a backyard wedding?” Pinky's lips curled nervously as she asked — she feared the response will turn out negatively. Pinky's words earned Kayla and June who were uneasy an imperceptible sigh of relief.
Anthony pushed his gaze back to Pinky. “It’s a grand wedding, of course,” he said to enliven Pinky's mood. Then his glance revisited Kayla, who was pouring herself another glass of wine. “Kayla and I had been preparing for months.”
The bottle in Kayla's hold almost slipped, the glass mistakenly overfilled and wine spilled over the table. Anthony's words came with a heavy force that shook her. To erase every suspicion her mistake raised, she pulled up an approving smile, glanced at Anthony and nodded at his lies. He planned alone —not with her.
“But how can the wedding be in seven days when you haven't proposed yet?” Sam's questioning eyes fell on Kayla's fingers, “I don't see any ring on her finger.”
“About the proposal…” He gazed at Sam. His lips shifted into a small beam. Sam knew that Anthony wasn't the type that smiled, so he could manage the little smile Anthony gave him, he just needed an answer to his curious question.
His silence left everyone's heart wobbling as they anticipated what he would say next. An overwhelming height of anxiousness had Kayla downing a cold wine without stop, her mind apprehended another test Anthony might give her, his silence already gave her a signal to prepare for the worst.
Anthony looked at Kayla, who kept imbibing cold wine, avoiding his eyes. With his eyes on her, he pushed his seat back and slowly stood up. Kayla heard the sound of his seat scraping the floor. Anxiousness and curiosity pushed her head to look at him. She froze up in fear, gazing at him, thoughts whirling around her mind.
Kayla's eyes followed his movements, the same as the eyes of others at the table. They wondered what he was about to do. June knew he was up to no good. Kayla's heart raced, she could pee on herself.
He captured her eyes in a tight gaze she found grisly, then took a knee beside her. Her eyes widened, Anthony was about to do something beyond her expectations. She hoped it was nothing near her thoughts.
“Wait! Is he going to propose?” Sam's voice sounded both excited and shocked as he gaped. He stood up and hollered, “He’s going to propose to Kayla!”
A lot of people in the restaurant looked towards Anthony's direction — they heard Sam when he mentioned ‘propose’. While some people made issues out of the proposal, those who gladly anticipated the proposal reached for their phones, and some, their cameras —they were ready to film the moment.
Anthony broke the gaze and slid his hand into his pocket. Kayla's eyes still followed his movements until he took out a love-shaped velvety navy ring box. Upon seeing the ring box, it occurred to everyone that he was indeed going to propose. The restaurant broke into an euphoric hubbub, customers were filming the moment. Tally, Pinky, and Sam were excited, they went live on social media.
Holding the box, he shot Kayla a glance that stabbed her emotions like a knife, caused her heart to ache and bleed until she lost herself. Her eyes went dewy, yet she fought to keep her cool. She wished it was another test. She wished it could be a necklace or anything other than a ring seated in the box.
Soon as Anthony opened the box, people were stunned to see the 40-carat marquise-cut diamond ring which seated beautifully in the box. Kayla's heart broke into shreds, tears forced its way out of her eyes. It eventually turned out to be a ring. Anthony was going to propose to her. Proposing was beyond a test.
Anthony picked the ring out from the box. Looking up at her face with the ring held forward. “Kayla Jonathan. Will you be my wife?”
“Come on, Kayla. Say ‘yes,” Pinky urged, afraid Kayla might turn down the proposal because she'd delayed for too long.
Her delay started to annoy and exhaust people. Most people turned off their phones and focused on what they were doing before the proposal distracted. Anthony was supposed to get tired, but his intentions energized him. He would kneel there until she made her decision.
“If I'm not conflating things, Anthony Kings is having an affair with Jenifer Houston, isn't he?” a teenage girl in glasses asked her girlfriend, who exchanged a puzzled look with her.
“I thought so.” Her friend shrugged. “Never heard he broke up with Jenifer.”
Customers in the restaurant and fans on social media made issues out of Anthony's relationship with Jenifer Houston. His sudden proposal to Kayla baffled people and raised a million questions in their minds.
It pained Kayla to know that people would take her tears and hesitation otherwise. They would assume she was surprised, or for some selfish reason, she wasn't ready for marriage, and Anthony caught her off guard. People would call her ingrate. But all that were far from the truth.
“Why are you doing this?” Her voice was low and rueful tone. The coercive glint in his eyes alone gave her a deep compulsion to accept his proposal, but she decided against marrying an imposter. “I can't.” Not withstanding the feelings, she stormed away.
Kayla's action terrified June, she knew it was dangerous for Kayla to leave without settling Anthony, she could see it in Anthony's eyes as he looked at her. His gaze was much more like a warning.
June took the same route Kayla took and headed to the restroom, hoping to find her there. Opening the women's restroom door, she found Kayla there alone, flooding tears. Kayla's feeling at that moment was contagious, June contracted the pain but hers was joined with sympathy.
“Kayla.” She walked up to Kayla. Taking Kayla's arms, she made Kayla look at her. Kayla buried her face, still in tears. “I know it's worth crying for, but please stop punishing yourself like this.” She held Kayla's face, clueless concerning how to console her, but then something came to mind. “Accept his proposal, Kayla.”
Kayla's heart sank the moment June's words collided with her ears. Her tears ceased as anger stormed in, confusion glistening in her eyes, she doubted if she even heard clearly. “Mom …” She slipped off June's hold and stepped back. “You —” Was June under a spell?
June quickly picked up Kayla's reaction. “I didn't mean it that way, sweetie.” That unbelievable look still sat tight on Kayla's face. “Do you remember your 13th birthday? That day on the balcony?” Tears rolled down her face.
Kayla shut her eyes as the memory of that day ravaged her soul and pulled tears out of her eyes. The memory didn't hurt because she almost jumped off the balcony that day, it hurt because Clinton's end lived on in her heart.
“For years you've borne guilt in your heart. Maybe this is your chance to let it go.” June approached. She placed her hand on Kayla's cheek as they looked into each other's eyes. “Remember… every pain is a passage to a new beginning. Who knows, maybe destiny has something else to say.”
“Destiny has nothing else to say, Mother. Anthony threatens to kill all of you. He's evil, he's not Clinton.”
June wiped Kayla's tears with her fingers. “He may not be Clinton, he must be a bad person. But if you obey him, every one of us will be alive until I figure out a way to set things right.”
Hope rushed through Kayla and her eyes lit up when she heard June mention ‘way’. “Are you — going to help me escape from Anthony?” She asked for certainty.
“You have my words,” June assured, liking the hope washing over Kayla.
Kayla's eyes drilled into June's, as if trying to figure the possibility of June keeping to her words. She saw trust in June's eyes, and she trusted June as a mother; therefore she believed in June's promises. “But the marriage is in seven days, do you realize you must be quick about it?”
“Just relax and do whatever he asks you to do. Then leave the rest to me, okay?” Kayla nodded at June's assurance. “That’s my daughter. Now huff and puff, and let's go kiss the birdbrain goodbye in advance.” A hilarious smile which touched June's face sent a smile across Kayla's face.
Wearing June's promise in her heart like an armor — only June's promise, Kayla killed every heartache, every fear, every dismay and apprehension. Boldly, she accepted his proposal. Ignoring every knowledge of his dark intentions, she let the ring of an imposter who'd do her nothing but harm wrap around her finger.
Acclamation burst through the atmosphere in the restaurant soon as she finally accepted the proposal. People congratulated them on their engagement. But these people never knew their acclamation was like a farewell to Kayla —was like a funeral — was like sending her to a journey of no return. However, with the armor of hope June had given, she believed life must return to what it used to be before he came.
Immediately after the proposal, Anthony had squeezed her so tightly in his arms like a happy boyfriend and whispered in her ear, “Such a clever little bird you are, Kayla. A little reminder…” He paused. “You failed your test.” He dropped a kissed on her cheek and smiled, lovingly stroking her back.
Driving home in the car with Anthony hung Kayla’s heart above normality, leaving signs of anxiety on her face. That horrible feeling that came with being around him was nothing she could put to words, though she sensed it was unsafe. His words at the restaurant stuck around, gnawing on her mind so much that she got the urge to jump off the riding car at the thought of what he’d do to her. Often, she flicked him a sidelong glance to learn his intentions through his face. She puffed silently and imperceptibly, her eyes flitting about, her blood running cold with fear as her fingers shivered, but she held them tight to hide her uneasiness. Although her efforts, not every ounce of her nervousness hid. Anthony had been burning with the fury he fought to tame, yet the raging beast exploded, consuming his mind with dark desires. Not that he didn’t want to indulge in these crucial desires, he just controlled himself. He looked at her, but she didn’t return his glance. That profound, uncontr
Peach and White were basically the colors in the magnificent Banquet Hall, decorated with too many alluring decors. Many were the lights in the Hall, but only the stunning waterfall crystal chandelier at the dance floor was on. On the floor of the dance floor was a monogram, A&K with a large peach flower crest around it. Beautiful flower arrangements; peach taper candles in white taper candleholders adorned every guest’s table. A few guests left their candles on, others enjoyed it off. Guests, except for the servers who were in uniform, gussied up amazingly. A love song played softly, kindling a whelming feeling of affection, which quietened the hall as guests immersed themselves in the syrupy feeling. Most guests, rather than all, hooked their attention on the newlywed who were dancing on the dance floor in the middle of the hall. Many guests cared to film the moment. Anthony was charming in his wedding looks. Perhaps he spent way more hours preparing his enticing looks. He even mad
So, this was the scent making his wolf flip with excitement and trying to unleash himself in the public. Kayla Jonathan? It was her skunking scent calling him this whole time. Vanilla and raspberry it was, but her fragrance surpassed just vanilla and raspberry — she smelled finger-lickin’ good. There was something more to her scent which he sensed was different from humans. If he put it into a guess, he'd say she smelled heavenly and refreshing, maybe like a faerie. A faerie married a hybrid? He put his thought aside, and his eyes browsed through her. That shapeless, lanky girl he used to know had transformed into a beautiful, hourglass woman in every man's dream. He could hear his wolf growling his excitement. As if his wolf’s dopamine and serotonin rushed into his human side, he just couldn’t stop smiling. It seemed his wolf picked so much interest in her. ‘Hey, Wolan, no second chance mate allowed, not to mention this one is married,’ he warned within his mind to whist his wolf bec
Several people were in the hotel lobby doing their various kinds of activity. Anthony stood in the lobby. One of his hands tarried inside his pocket and the other holding his phone to his ear. He was on the phone with someone who must have given him some bad news that left his brow furrowed. ‘A letter came to Toflan for you today, Anthony. No sender's name. No address or contact info. Just a paper in an envelope. I can't seem to tell whether it's a shifter behind the letter or a human. Check it out yourself, I sent it via W******p.’ Frank, his secretary spoke over the phone. Right after Frank ended the call, Anthony checked the letter. Of course he expected a complete shit. ‘A beautiful wife there, man. How interesting will it be to have a bullet in her head? Maybe… a silver bullet.’ An opulent hotel suite was romantically decorated, quiet as a graveyard. Red petals spread throughout the white bed; in the middle of the bed came a love shape designed with petals. Surrounding the bed
Kayla laid on her side, gasping for air. Her hand squeezing the sheet hard as she struggled to resuscitate herself. He approached the nightstand and took the contraceptive from the drawer. Easing two capsules in his mouth, he tossed the medication bottle across the room, then sauntered back to the bed with dead slow and dominant steps. The look on his face, the gaze he placed on her — spelled out his dark intentions. Kayla sprung back to a conscious state, though a bit exhausted. The moment she felt his weight at the edge of the bed, fear surged through her as she swivelled her head down, only to see he’d moved near her legs already. Before she could make a dash, he seized her legs and wrenched her back on the bed, settling over her. He took her hands and locked them above her head with only one of his big, steely hand. She was left breathless under him, gazing into his flaming eyes that constantly heightened the fear within her. His warm breath brushed over her face as his face
Yesterday slipped by with every pain and rage, and it seemed the new day was about to deepen yesterday's emotions when Kayla sat at the table in her office, paying full attention to a twenty-year-old Madison who was a speaker of ASL, interpreting her dumb mother’s bodily signs. Her first mute client… God help her. “Except your daughters, are there more witnesses or evidence that can help us through the case?” Kayla asked Monica Smithfield, Madison's mother. Monica nodded briskly, self-assured. She reached for a tote bag which sat on her legs, her hands trembling as she took a pile of documents out from the bag and set them on the desk. Monica's restless and shaky movements had almost got Kayla begging her to relax. Monica's little daughter, Sophia, who stood beside Monica, sadly, if not angrily, dimmed her eyes at her mother's uneasiness. “I need you to calm down, Mommy, you’re scaring me. I don’t want you to leave Maddie and I like daddy did,” she sniveled. Moved by her daughter’s
No sooner had the registrar called Monica Smithfield’s case than Sophia waved at Kayla from the witness stand. Kayla's eyes found Sophia, then Sophia used bodily signs to ask if her mother would win. Kayla looked away without offering her any hope. Sophia discerned Kayla's act meant ‘whatever you see, take it’, so her face fell. From the moment Kayla stepped into the courtroom, the defendant, Alfred Seong-Hun, had fixed her with such death look she found offensive. The blackguard’s lewd and obviously spiteful stare beat at her comfort; bunt her mind into thoughts, not doubt she might flip her lid. She almost loured the instant she turned to the crowd and found Alfred's men all watching her like she was food. Except for Alfred's gaze which she found annoying, the atmosphere in the room was yet another problem. Threatening. Come to think of it… according to Monica's story about the groups of untrue beings, wasn't she supposed to expect a man ten-times older than Alfred Seong-Hun? She'
Humph! The dreadful day Kayla wished would never come had burst in, she'd go back to that bloody house. She couldn't focus at work as it was disquieting knowing she must hark back to Anthony’s house. Her miserable appearance merited her queries she did not answer. Kayla didn’t think she could survive it in Anthony's house for an entire month being browbeaten by the butthead. Kayla left Qynville at four p.m, aware she must arrive at Anthony’s house before eight p.m, which was the time stated by the rule for her to return home. She stopped by her house to pick up a few necessary belongings and even have a soothing dinner there. Pulling up in the driveway, she proceeded further into the house. After a soothing dinner in the dining room, where Nora texted her reminding her about being in Anthony’s house earlier, she headed for her bedroom to arrange some necessary belongings she’d take along with her to Anthony’s house. She stopped dead at the door, staring at an amiss post-it note paste
Three years later.A prolonged silence reigned in a bedroom. The silence had nearly grown beyond silence, but the sound of vacuum cleaners broke through the door as muffled sounds. Anthony lay shirtless in the bed. His eyes were closed as though he were asleep, his hand laying over Kayla's back. Kayla lay with her head and half of her torso on him. Her eyes were wide open. Unlike a shirtless Anthony, she had a gray nightshirt on.Kayla's mind couldn't go through so many thoughts and imaginations without her remembering the hot sex they had last night. It was hot—so hot and rough that she gulped down two bottles of chilled water and energy drinks after. Thank goodness their neighbors lived many blocks away, and their house was soundproofed. Their bedroom including. She and Anthony were glad the kids didn't interrupt, Eaven especially. It was seven in the morning, yet she and Anthony were stuck in the bed like heaven would fall if one of them had left the bedroom. “I went to the hospita
Already, everyone had risen to their feet. A wolf leaped at Marcus. Marcus flew up to the height of the wolf, and drilled his hands and claws into the wolf's torso, splitting the wolf into two. All wolves enraged, Wolan zoomed closer to make a swipe. Marcus leaned backward, his feet scraping the floor as he glided beneath Wolan. He grabbed Wolan’s leg from below, and twisted, wrenching a pained growl off him. Twisting one more time, he flung him to the wall harder, and Wolan broke the unbreakable wall. Dominic rolled over the floor, yelling in pain, holding his leg. Another wolf came at him. Marcus allowed the wolf to descend. Immediately the wolf descended, he took his hand up and penetrated the wolf's chest wall, pulling the wolf's heart out of him. The wolf whimpered and dropped dead, shifting back to a dead human form. Bo zoomed towards him. Marcus caught him in the air by the neck and snapped his neck, throwing him aside.Camlin stood up and tossed the spring-chained axe at him.
Marcus switched to his vampire form—a pale ash skin, visible veins poking out on the layer of his body, long fangs, pointy ears, dark eyes like midnight, a face like an animal, and longer claws. Kicking Anthony in the torso, he slashed the claws of his hands at him, slicing his throat and face, blood surging out of Anthony's wounds with pressure. Anthony bounced back and healed.Making another slash with the claws of his left hand, Anthony bent backward and let his hand swing past his face, then he sprang up to claw back at him but he leaned backward. Marcus stood upright and stabbed his claws into Anthony's stomach, pulled him closer with his claws in his stomach, and buried his fangs into his neck. Anthony growled in pain. Retracting his fangs and claws, he shoved Anthony aside by his neck.Anthony fell and changed back to his human form, convulsing, grunting, and groaning. Kayla heaved herself from the floor and ran up to him, holding him closer in her arms, while he struggled to h
The room quietened. The vampires dropped, yet everyone still squared up vigilantly, prepared for even the most sudden attack. Before their eyes, the throne chair turned its back to them and slowly turned again. Marcus appeared sitting on it with his hands on the armrest. His puckered brow emanated pure rage and vengeance. The sight of him only had everyone getting even more prepared. Marcus worked his eyes around for a while.“My empire. My soldiers. Everything that I spent every century of my life building, has crumbled before my eyes,” Marcus said. His tone was placid but pressured by existing rage. “Words can never express how angry I have become. But actions can.”The moment his chair turned, deep growls apart from the wolves’ resonated in the room. Not aware of where it came from, they looked around. Screeching, hisses, growls, and snarls clouded the atmosphere. It took a while before they grabbed the situation. The dead vampires were awakening again. The ones without complete bo
One of the elders lifted Catelyn from the floor and slammed her against the wall on the platform. The elder with fire radiating from his hands zoomed to the platform and unleashed the fire on her. Catelyn still on the floor, quickly put out her hand and blocked his fire. A hand wasn't enough, as his fire conquered hers, she added another hand.Fierce rumbles erupted from Jacob as he took a defense stance in his hybrid form, ready to take on an ascendant that was baring his fangs in front of him. The ascendant zoomed forward. Jacob met him midway and pulled his head off his body. An elder came behind Jacob's back and lifted him from the floor, trying to dismember him with telekinesis. Jacob growled in pain as the elder spread his limbs apart, pulling them from his torso. Unable to endure the energy and pain, he shifted back to his human form the second his hand fell off his body.Tally spotted Jacob. He growled with rage and zoomed toward the elder that was dismembering Jacob. Another
They looked up and saw Anthony passing the wall Marcus had passed through.Anthony appeared straight right in Marcus's main chamber through the wall. He wasn't sure he had seen anything so demonic as Marcus's throne. One could swoon at the sight of the red-eyed and fanged sculpted cobras serving as the armrests of the throne chair. Sadly, he wasn't intimidated by the creepy things in the room, not even by the people in the room.Approximately ten vampires in black hooded cloaks stood on the left, and twenty in scarlet hooded cloaks on the right. Anthony was certain of one thing… the black cloaks were elder vampires with powers, and the scarlet cloaks were ascendant vampires with powers that were unlike the ones he fought back there. He was here to send this ancient bozo with faded green eyes to where he belonged. The grave. With rage, vengeance, bravery, and readiness trapped in him, he stepped closer and stood a bit close to the middle of the vampires. “I knew you'll come.” Anthony
Anthony and Amber made it back into the building after fighting their way through. They were met with unusual changes when they stepped into the lobby. The whole place now seemed digitalized and modern, rather than an ordinary palace lobby.“Where are we?” Amber asked.Anthony continued strides and Amber followed. “This building is technical. A complicated great work of science. It changes form.”“So, you know where we're going? How do we know where Marcus is?” “Follow me.”Amber retrieved a pistol from his pocket and shot a newborn alighting from the stairs above ground and the newborn burst. Her light brown eyes bore into Anthony's. “Get your head in the game.” She was giving the pistol back when another vampire that had killed his opponent came at them. She spun around and shot the vampire. “I’ll keep this.”They continued further to the rolling staircase.Anthony and Amber stood before a wall that was sliding open. Both froze at the situation on sight. The place was large like a
Anthony continued further, lurching as he walked. He was hopeless, pained, and afraid, his eyes red with tears as he breathed shakily. His beast wouldn't stop growling in his head, clawing at him, so restless—the beast was enraged and pained as him.Marcus's scent was always there. He might go the wrong way if he followed it. But there were other scents on the path he walked. The scents he'd smelled in the chamber, along with Marcus's. A realization waltzed in, shooting him into motions. He could follow those scents to wherever they took his mate to.With haste and fury, Anthony walked from one hallway to another and entered four different elevators that lead to different floors, paving his way with the solar lamp and pistols he used to knock down the vampires that crossed his path.Anthony was met with ten soldiers in gas masks right in the passage where the scents took him. He stood many feet from the vampires, staring at them, getting himself prepared. He was confident that Kayla w
Anthony remained in a stance, a foot, a knee, and palms on the earth, his glowing eyes surveying his surrounding. Newborn vampires. Fledglings. They were everywhere around. They were aiming his way. He could smell them, their courage, confidence, and their readiness. He even smelled their deaths. Both far and near, he heard every single sound they made. His right ear twitched. There were two vampires on different trees in his vicinity, fifteen coming at him. They were two hundred in the forest right then, but only a few were after him.The newborn on the tree descended, one coming from his front and three from his left. Anthony yanked his machine gun off his shoulder, sprang up from the ground, and shot the newborn descending from the tree. He threw the machine gun up in the air, sliced the neck of one of the vampires with his poisonous claws, snapped and pulled the other's head. Then he caught the machine gun once it came down, and shot the five coming at him. Their screams, hisses,
