Ana
My phone had been ringing off the hook since I resumed my shift. I knew it was my sister, who was probably calling about my son. I answered it on the second ring. “Beth?” “Ughh. I'm tired Ana. Little One is crying for his mama.” She whined over the phone. “Stop calling my child that. His name is Liam, and he'd grow up to be a great man.” I chided my sister for the umpteenth time. But she doesn't listen. “Seriously Ana, when will you be home? I need to get ready for practice, remember,” she said. My sister was the sweetest, helping me care for Liam while I worked to put food on the table. “Give me an hour, two max,” I answered. “But two hours is too–” she started to complain but I cut her short. “Sorry, Beth. Gotta go. My boss is here.” I dropped the call and heaved a sigh. I'd lied. But it was a necessary evil. I needed to work at least two more hours if I was going to successfully dodge Tony today. And the queue was getting longer. “Hey sweetheart, get me a black coffee with sugar, will ya.” A gruff voice demanded. I hated the term ‘sweetheart’, especially when it comes from a fat, balding old man with brown teeth. He leered at me and I had to hold myself back from throwing hot coffee at his face. So instead, I gave him my best polite smile and handed him his coffee. “Here you go sir.” This was the only way to survive at my job. Pretend you don't care and move on to the next customer. Five minutes later, Tony walked into the coffee shop. I was only able to notice because his figure towered above everyone else's and cast dark foreboding shadows on the counter where I stood. Goosebumps erupted on my skin. I shivered visibly and swallowed hard. I'd thought he wouldn't be here until I had to leave. I'd made sure of that. How come? Why did his stalker schedule change all of a sudden? Tony was 6 '7, quite hunky, with logs of wood for arms and legs. When he smiled, no, when he sneered, he exposed the most beautiful set of teeth you'd ever seen. His gray eyes made him look like a psycho god, but a psycho nonetheless. He was beautifully made, but he was also crazy. Psycho-level crazy. Only people who didn't know him would think otherwise. I expected him to try and jump the queue as usual but instead, he turned right and took a seat at the window side of the coffee shop. It was a vantage position because he kept stealing creepy, unwelcome glances at me as I worked. The crowd was thinning and I tried my best to ignore him until my boss came up to meet me. “Ana, I need you to go and serve that gentleman over there.” He said and pointed towards Tony. But he didn't even need to point, Tony was the only person seated in the booth. He was relaxed, gladly taking his sweet time. But I pleaded nonetheless. “Could you get James to serve him please?” He thought about it for a second, noticed my fearful demeanor and nodded. “Okay, sure.” I breathed a sigh of relief. 30 more minutes and I'd be out of here. I plan to head home straight to my son. But I saw my boss coming back almost immediately and knew that something was wrong. “James left for an emergency, and you're the only waiter on ground. Sorry, but you gotta serve him.” My boss ordered and left. Damn it! Tony's order was ready. I wiped my hands on my apron and carried the food, walking towards him with caution. It was a public place and I was ready to scream and shout if he tried anything funny. He watched me like a hawk as I approached, his gray eyes roving around my body in the most disgusting manner. I got to his table and placed the food in front of him. He didn't move, didn't say anything. He just watched me. I quickly turned around to leave, but he grabbed hold of my hand, and pulled me carelessly towards his body. I tried to fight him off but his pull was so strong against my weak protests and in seconds I found myself seating on his lap. “Tony let me go, you swine!” I yelled and clawed at his face. But my kicking was no use compared to the strength of the buffoon. He laughed casually and announced to the few people who were now staring at us, “Don't mind her theatrics folks, she's my girl.” They seemed to believe as everyone turned to mind their business, and the fact that I was seating on his lap didn't help my case. I felt so humiliated and tears starting to gather in my eyes. And to make matters worse, the few people around just stared, unwilling to help. “Let her go.” A voice ordered out of nowhere. I looked up to find a man dressed in an expensive-looking navy suit. He wore glasses that made him look like he couldn't hurt a fly. He looked like he should be seated somewhere in a high rise building, attending corporate meetings instead of challenging hoodlums. And I hadn't seen him around before. Tony's eyes widened in utter disbelief that someone had the nerve to challenge him and he unconsciously released his grip on me. I fled from him immediately, successfully putting a lot of distance between us. Knowing what Tony was capable of, I was scared for the man. I went and hid behind the counter, from where I watched the rest of it unfold. Tony stood slowly, his eyes a mix of venom and anger as he reached where the man stood. But the stranger was unshaken, he didn't even flinch as Tony approached. Tony's face was inches away from the stranger's as he snarled, the veins threatening to burst out from his neck. The stranger had a strange look on his face, an emotion I couldn't quite place. But one thing was sure, he wasn't scared of Tony, not in the least. He calmly leaned in and whispered something in Tony's ear and then stepped back, carefully watching his reaction. From my hiding place, I saw Tony's eyes widen with what looked like fear, but I wasn't sure. This was Tony after all. He once used his hands to beat a man to death, right in my presence. I continued watching and opened my mouth in shock, when Tony raised his hands in surrender. He walked out of the shop, without looking back. The man glanced towards my direction and started to walk out too. I ran after him, wanting to show my gratitude. I stopped him just as he reached for the door handle. I took a deep breath and smiled gratefully. “Thank you for your help back there. My name's Ana, and you are?” I stuck out my hand for a handshake but he brushed me off and opened the door. He didn't so much as acknowledge me. Strange. I stood there staring after him. From the glass door, I could see him enter a sleek, black car, its glossy paint reflecting the light. The car's door closed with a soft thud, and the engine roared to life, its sound like a low growl that seemed to vibrate through the air. He sped off, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake. I was grateful, but I couldn't help but wonder, “What exactly did he say to Tony?”Ana I closed for work and left the shop, eager to get back to my son Liam, and also relieve my sister so she could go for her music practice. As I stepped out the door, I noticed a black car that looked a lot like the one from earlier, parked a few blocks away from the entrance. A lot of people own black cars so I didn't worry about it. I didn't have a car of my own and I had to walk some distance to catch the bus. I hurried along but soon noticed the black car idling alongside me on the sidewalk. I swallowed hard and clutched my bag tighter. I increased my pace, looking back intermittently to see if I was still being followed. The car increased speed as it tried to keep up with me. Why would the man who tried to save me a few hours ago be following me? I've had enough of stalkers and wasn't interested in adding another to my list. I picked up speed and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. The car revved up too and sped along, nearly knocking down an elderly couple who w
Ana Now it was my turn to stare at him like he was crazy. “Are you crazy?” I asked genuinely, because I was expecting to get a direct answer to the question. Granted, he didn't look like someone who was crazy. He looked quite normal. But asking a stranger to marry him? That was crazy. “Quite the opposite," he said, his tone measured and calm. He slipped his hands into his suit pockets, retrieved a soft cloth, and began to meticulously clean his glasses. He didn't even look at me. He was sexy with the glasses on, and without it, he was simply a snack. When we met at the coffee shop, I was too distracted by Tony to even remotely take note of his features. A waiter appeared, carrying a tray with two glasses of wine. He took one and nodded at me, “drink?” “I don't drink.” I said, eyeing him cautiously. My father was an abusive alcoholic. Each night he stumbled home, reeking of cheap alcohol. He would descend on my poor mother and proceed to beat her mercilessly. My sist
BenI glanced at my watch for the umpteenth time, the same old dreaded anxiety creeping up on me. Where was she?I hated having to wait on people. It was one of my pet peeves. Shirley had made sure of that.“Damn it.” I swore under my breath. If she doesn't show in the next five minutes, I would cancel the deal. To hell with the business. The door to the lounge opened and my business partners walked in. There were three of them; two men and a woman. I wasn't exactly comfortable meeting with them again, given that they'd witnessed my humiliation five years ago. But I had to do this for my father. He needed this deal to go through.I stood and came forward to meet them. We shook hands and I took them back to the seat where I sat with the woman not quite long ago.Dressed in suits, they looked like they didn't have time to waste, and I wasn't one to dally when it comes to business either. But my new wife - I didn't even know her name - was nowhere to be found.“We thought you'd be her
AnaThe text I'd received earlier from Beth was vague, but I didn't care. My baby was running a serious fever and was crying incessantly. Not even food could pacify him. I had to rush home and take care of him myself.I left the lounge and sprinted home, the only thought in my mind was my baby, Liam. I would've flown if I could. But then I remembered I had some money from the man, and immediately stopped a taxi.20 minutes later, I burst into my house and headed straight for Liam's crib. “Oh, my poor baby,” my throat tightened as I touched his hair. He cooed and turned on his side. He was sleeping peacefully, but his body was still warm. Beth was lying down close to the crib, sleeping. She looked exhausted.I tapped her, “Beth, wake up.”She opened her eyes, and on seeing me, she instantly sat up, rubbing her eyes.“Ana. Liam is sleeping now.”“Yes but I still need to take him to the doctor, he's still running temperature.” I said, searching round the room for his pacifier.Somethin
Ben “I'm sorry, wha–” I hung up on her, reclined in my chair and released a deep sigh of victory. What I wouldn't give to see the look of anger on her face right now. The woman was a complete piece of work, and she was stubborn. It was high time she got a taste of her own medicine. She was still trying to process the news and definitely start something when I ended the call; I wasn't going to give her the chance to protest. I didn't like the obvious mess I'd gotten myself into with this arrangement. I have no interest in being in anyone's space, especially not a woman's. But I'd do anything for my father, and for the company. So, unfortunately for me, I needed her. But I would never let it show that I really needed her that bad, or she would smell my desperation and use it against me. I didn't doubt that because she already showed me what she was capable of. This was a game and I know all about that too well. And I'd never be caught hands down. Never again. It was l
Ana When I woke up the next morning, I had an uneasy feeling. Ben's last words over the phone kept echoing in my head. I didn't exactly like the man so the thought of being his pretend wife for 30 days annoyed me. 30 whole days! What would I do about Liam? How would I take care of him and at the same time pretend he doesn't exist when I'll always probably be around Ben? I could hire a long-term nanny with the money he gave me but Beth needed new kits or they would kick her out of the music program. My life was a whirlwind of challenges that never seemed to end. I took a deep breath, wiped the sweat from my brow and continued to serve customers. The shop was already filling up with customers who either joined the queue or took a seat and waited for a waiter to come to them. I got busy serving and chatting with customers. However, the thought of making a decision about Ben skirted around in my mind still. While I was mulling it over, the door to the coffee shop opened and a man
Ana I entered the office to find two men seated and discussing. One was Ben, and the other was a man I'd never seen before. Ben gave me a strangely comforting smile and asked, “How was the ride over?” “You basically forced me to come here but sure, it was fine.” I glared at him. He ignored my retort and continued. “Ana, this is my lawyer, Remi Laurent. Remi, this is my wife, Ana.” Remi chuckled mischievously at the mention of ‘wife’ and Ben gave him a warning stare. I could tell that their relationship was more than that of lawyer and client. They were friends. Remi rose and came over to where I stood. “It’s nice to finally meet you. Please, call me Remi.” We shook hands. He was friendly, warm and courteous. He was so different from Ben's brooding personality and that was a welcome change. I liked him right away. Ben poured himself a drink from the bottle of whiskey standing on his desk. He got up, picked up the glass, and went over to stand at the window, his hands in
AnaLeaving Ben's office, I pondered over his demand to move in with him. I'd only known the man for 48 hours so he was basically still a stranger, but I took comfort in the fact that he was a well known figure in Los Angeles. A celebrity so to speak. Before leaving his office, I'd already resigned to fate. Ben has got me in a chokehold and there was nothing I could do but move in with him. I couldn't afford to go to jail, not when I had Liam and Beth to take care of.But I made a silent vow to myself: He would not get off lightly with deceiving me. I would pay him back in kind.Sooner or later.Riding down the escalator, I came across two women discussing with hushed tones. But they suddenly stopped and waved when they saw me. I was still agitated following my meeting with Ben so I ignored them and continued on my way.Getting to the revolving door, a voice called out near me, “Mrs. Pierce?”But I continued moving and was about to push the door when the security man stopped me wit
Ana30 minutes later when Beth had finally calmed down, I took her up to her room and tucked her into bed. Then I headed down the hall to Liam's room. I hadn't seen my baby since I left in the morning. When I entered his room, I found a maid playing with him while cleaning up his room at the same time.Being a single mother myself, I was impressed by the way she expertly handled Liam and kept him occupied while doing something else. I chuckled to myself. The power of multitasking which appears to only be borne by women. As I watched the maid and Liam interact, I couldn't help but feel a pang of gratitude towards Ben for hiring such a wonderful staff. Being a boy Mom was no easy task and Ben's staff had made sure I took a well-deserved rest every now and then. The maid, whose name tag read "Maria", caught my eye and smiled warmly. "Hello, Mrs. Ana. I was just getting Liam ready for bed. Would you like me to finish up?" I shook my head, walking over to Liam. "No, Maria, thank you. I
AnaBen and I arrived home just a few minutes past 7:00 pm to find Beth sitting on the patio crying.Without waiting for the car to come to a complete stop, I jumped out and rushed towards Beth, my heart thudding widely in my chest. Why was she crying? Did something happen to Liam? Was it Shirley again?Oh, I'm going to kill her with my bare hands if she had anything to do with this!“Beth, what is it? Why are you crying?” I asked, my voice laced with fear as I crouched down close to her. “Is Liam okay?”“Everything okay?” Ben asked, slowly approaching us, his face filled with something that looked like fear. “Where's Candace?” “It's Alex,” Beth whimpered, tears streaming down her cheeks as she spoke. Who is Alex? I thought, and then it clicked. Alex is the ex-boyfriend that nearly hurt Beth.“What about him?” I asked, “Did he try to contact you again?”Beth stared at me, a sorrowful look in her innocent eyes. “He's dead, Ana. Someone killed him.” He finally said, her voice quaverin
AnaWaoh! I felt a flutter in my chest at the intimacy of the question. "That's a pretty personal question, Ben," I said, trying to sound nonchalant. I wasn't expecting that. I thought to myself. Now what do I say? Do I admit the truth, or do I lie and hope he doesn't prob any further?Ben grinned at me and cocked his head. "Hey, I'm your husband. I'm allowed to ask personal questions."I smiled, feeling a sense of ease returning. "Okay, fine. When I'm lying in bed at night, I'm usually thinking about..."“What?” He prompted, his eyes shining with child-like expectation.“You.” I finally said, and held my breath.Ben's eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled. "Oh? And what am I doing in these thoughts of yours?"I felt a blush rise to my cheeks, but I tried to play it cool. "You're usually doing something very charming and romantic," I said, trying to sound nonchalant.Ben laughed, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "I see. And do these thoughts of yours usually end with us living
Ana***7 Days Until End of Contract***Two hours later, Kelly and I were finally done arranging stuff in my new office.Ben had sent the interior designer as promised and she did a fine job painting and decorating the space, and for that, I gave her a very generous tip, because she more than deserved it.As I stood by the window admiring the new decor, Kelly smiled and nodded in approval. "You're officially settled in, Mrs. Pierce," she said, gathering her things. "I'll let you get comfortable. If you need anything, just buzz me."“Thanks, Kelly,” I said and lightly touched her arm.Just then, the door swung open and Ben walked in, a warm smile on his face. "How's the new office?" he asked, his eyes scanning the room."It's perfect," I replied, feeling a sense of pride and ownership. "The designer did an amazing job."Ben nodded approvingly at the colors, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I'm glad you like it," he said. "You deserve it."We chatted for a few more minutes, discussing
AnaOmg! My new office? He really wasn't joking about getting me my own corner office. My eyes shone with joy and delight as I continued to follow him without further questions. As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and pride. My own corner office? It was a dream come true. I had always wanted to prove myself as a capable and independent individual, and this was a huge step in that direction.Ben led me to a door with a shiny new nameplate that read "Ana Smith, Executive Director." I gasped in surprise, my eyes widening with delight."Ben, this is...wow," I stuttered, my hand reaching out to touch the nameplate.Ben chuckled and leaned against the doorframe, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I told you I'd get you set up," he said, his voice low and husky.I turned to him, my heart swelling with gratitude. "Thank you, Ben," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "This means so much to me."I felt a flutter in my chest as I gazed up at him, my heart overflow
AnaTerrence was already standing and waiting by the car as Ben and I came down from our respective rooms at the same time, as if on cue.Ben smiled and winked at me from across the foyer and my face turned red in a blush.Silly girl, I cautioned myself as I gracefully got in the back seat, followed by him.Usually, Ben would sit up in the front with Terrence but today was different. He wanted to sit close to me.His broad shoulders filled up the small space, and the heat from the closeness of his body radiated towards me, making my skin tingle with awareness.Flashes of the kiss we shared earlier in his bedroom flooded my memory and sent warm thrills across my entire body.I was giddy with excitement, but then I glanced at my wristwatch and grimaced, a frown creasing my brows. “We're so late.” I noted, my voice tinged with worry.“Says who?” Ben asked with a raised eyebrow.“I mean, aren't we?” I replied, glancing at my wristwatch again. “It's almost 10:00 am.”I turned to look at Be
AnaLike a lost sheep being taken to the slaughter, I followed Ben as he took me by the hand and led me to his bedroom.I'd never been in his bedroom before and as I stepped through the door, the unmistakable scent of cologne filled my nostrils, making my head spin.I knew that scent. It felt familiar, like a warm hug. Where had I smelled it before? I wondered, glancing around the cozy, elegant space.“Make yourself at home,” Ben said, nodding towards a plush cushion beside the bed. "I love your room," I said, taking in the calming colors and comfortable furnishings. "It feels like a sanctuary.”Ben chuckled and nodded. “That's the same thing you said last night.”I did a double take, my eyes narrowing at his words. “What? Did I…Was I here last night?”“No,” Ben laughed and handed me a glass of water. “But maybe. I'm not sure.” He added, still laughing.I rolled my eyes at him and accepted the cup. “It's not funny, Ben.”“Aren't you curious though?” Ben asked, and slowly approached m
AnaI woke up with a start, my top drenched in sweat, and my head pounding from a terrible hangover. Where was I?The slice of bright light seeping through the window blinds indicated that it was morning.I glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside table. 7:30am.I must've been really exhausted last night that I had fallen into such deep sleep. I don't even remember waking up in the middle of the night like I usually do.I rubbed my eyes and sleepily glanced around the room.My clothes were scattered all over the floor, trailing from the door up to the bed. I winced in pain as I tried to recollect how that came about.Oh god! Did I sleep with Ben? Did I shamelessly throw myself at him?I stumbled out of bed and headed straight for the medicine cabinet in the bathroom, my vision slightly blurred by a piece of straying hair.I walked past a mirror and paused, daring myself to take a look at the mess I must've made of myself last night.I succumbed, and as I gazed into the mirror, I was
BenAna and I danced together, laughing and spinning to the beat. For a moment, I forgot about our deal, about the future, and just let go.As the night wore on, we played games, told jokes, and even had a heated debate about the best pizza topping— Ana was adamant that pineapple belonged on pizza, while I was horrified by the suggestion. At one point, Remi pulled out a guitar and started strumming a lively tune. Ana grabbed my hand and pulled me into an impromptu karaoke session. We belted out a ridiculous duet of "I Will Survive," complete with over-the-top dance moves and dramatic arm flailing.I sang along to the beautiful tunes, never mind that my voice was already cracked from yelling on top of my voice all night. But I didn't mind, because for the first time in a long time, I was having the best time of my life with the woman I— love?Love? I caught myself midway, shocked to realize that I'd fallen hopelessly in love with this woman.I watched her happy face as we sang, my hea
