Aidan watched her leave the school building, exhaustion visible on her face. She looked like she hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep and wasn’t eating right. Her backpack seemed heavy, and as she waited with other students for the passing cars to clear the road before they could cross, she brought the back of her hand to her mouth to partially cover a yawn.
She was twenty years of age, and yet she looked like she was already thirty. Slightly taller than most of the girls around her, and noticeably bigger, Emma stood out from the crowd. Aidan stared at her, scanning every bit of her for as much as he could behind the safety of the car’s tinted window. There was nothing special about her – not in the way she looked nor in the way she carried herself, which was severely lacking in energy. And the more he watched her, his confusion grew as to why Henry was invested in her to intend to mate with her.
Henry seriously wanted to introduce to the pack, his mate, an ordinary human girl who got knocked up and somehow marked by their enemy? There was nothing to her – beauty, fame, money – probably average intelligence too.
While Aidan mentally insulted her, she crossed the street and seemed to be headed home. He instructed Pint, keeping his eyes on her lest he lose her. “Follow her.”
“Yes, Alpha,” he responded, and pulled out from the parking lot and into the street, keeping up with Emma. As they hit the intersection, they’d have to wait before they could join the traffic flow. And even then, they’d be stuck.
“Wait for my call,” he said, then opened the door and stepped out, hearing a ‘yes, Alpha,’ as he closed it. There had to be something about Emma that could at least get him thinking. He had to find something for his beast, or it’d go wild and take control, and he wanted this week to be relaxing in every way possible.
Arke gave him troubling sleeping for the last four nights since it wouldn’t shut up about her and kept scolding him for belittling her. Well, sorry not sorry, he happened to have a certain vision of his … their mate and she didn’t fit any criteria – she was easily a zero on his standards. Aidan wouldn’t even spare her a glance should she accidentally bump into him in public.
It was her that night, he was sure. He scented her, and the same longing feeling washed over him again. For decades, he searched for her. Aidan had always yearned for her without knowing who she was. He searched, waited, and when his patience ran out, he sought other women. And yet when his mate was finally within reach, he couldn’t accept her. But who was he fooling?
Fuck! What was the Moon Goddess thinking?
Aidan followed behind her. All this trouble just to calm his beast down. She wasn’t even worth his time. Having returned to this city, Aidan planned to finish business quickly and have some fun time for himself, which usually came in the form of alcohol, pot, pin up models, and by the early hours of morning, solitude. Instead, he was using his very limited free time to stalk a woman whose scent excited his beast.
She smelled good … so good that he was fighting to keep his canines from changing their forms from a human’s to that of a beast’s. Arke wanted to be near her – bathe in her scent and mark her to overpower the disgusting scent that lingered around her.
Checking his watch, he had been following her for almost an hour now and from the lively city center, she led him to a quieter, more desolate area on the outskirts of the city. They passed by somewhat decent establishments, graffiti painting brick walls in words that only those who knew understood and the usual drawings of genitalia. Apartments were lined up, in both left and right, most looking run down, some windows either broken, taped, or boarded. Groups of young men and women were gathered on porches, some groups dancing to music blasting from a radio, some holding sports equipment, while others conversed amongst themselves.
Aidan kept his head low. Neighborhoods like this, people knew one another – and as a stranger who had no intention of getting called out, he raised the hood of his jacket and kept walking. Some of these people were probably customers of the business, but they didn’t have to know, and he didn’t give a fuck about them too. Aidan was laying low for he was following her, but if they stirred trouble for him, he wouldn’t hesitate to keep them up all night, including their families.
Emma rounded a corner and he counted five seconds before doing the same. Then she was nowhere to be seen. The sidewalk was empty. A car passed by, and his eyes followed it, and he saw her again – across the street, just a little further up, entering a small grocery store.
He’d get caught on camera if he followed her in there, and he didn’t want that. Aidan could wait her out, but curiosity got the better of him.
“Arke,” he called, and the beast happily wagged its tail. “Help me out here.”
“With pleasure.”
Aidan closed his eyes as he felt the heat of Arke’s energy course through him and gather behind them. When he opened them, he could see clearer. From where he stood, he could see her past the glass walls, standing in front of a shelf of… milk?
Emma had a finger on her lips as she looked over the choices, and Aidan watched as she lifted one then put it back down. She took out her phone and tapped on it for a few before biting her lip as she looked at that particular product. In the end, she chose another and placed it on the basket. At the end of the aisle, she disappeared momentarily before showing up again – this time between rows of shelves that displayed products for babies – diapers, wipes, bottles, clothes, and other things he didn’t know what for. It just reminded him that his mate had a child that wasn’t his. Emma took a bag of diapers from the shelf, two packs of baby wipes, and a bag of tissue paper. Then she took a pack of baby bottles from a hook, shook her head, and placed it back.
She looked for other things before going to the counter. Aidan had to wait a few more minutes before she was out and was heading back to her home. As he stood there, he pretended to be doing something on his phone. It was already getting dark too and she didn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. From time to time, she’d raise her shoulders and her backpack would adjust for a bit – it must really be heavy. One hand was carrying a bag of groceries, the other holding a bag of toilet paper – she looked like a walking mini-grocery store on her own.
Despite her weight, she was a fast walker, and though sweat rolled off her skin and his heightened sense of hearing picked up on her heavy breaths, she kept walking … deeper into a less friendly neighborhood.
“Mate ….” Arke whined.
As much as Aidan hated to admit it, by that point he was getting worried on what her living conditions must be like – this wasn’t exactly a safe place to live in. He should know.
The last light of day was going, giving way to the night. Emma slowed down, switched the things she was carrying on each hand then resumed. Then she stopped abruptly and looked to her left. It was an alleyway, but it was probably a shortcut since she seemed to be thinking of whether to take it or not.
Aidan’s mind was telling her not to do it but… it was of no practical help. Never use the alley!
Emma turned left. Not long after that, he heard a chorused laughter of men. Shit!

Aidan ran to the alleyway and what he saw infuriated both his beast and him. A gang of four, all dressed in dirty baggy rags, of which two were blocking her way, and the other two were behind her, trapped his mate. One of them spoke, who he assumed was their leader. “Come on, girl … we can’t just let you past, now can we … boys?” The speaker and his gang laughed, and her reply was a squeak. “I don’t want any trouble,” said Emma. “Please … just let me pass.” “You hear that, boys?” the same person said. “She knows how to say please.” The putrid smell of the alleyway that was no different from the gangsters’ carried with it her lovely scent, which had a note of murkiness from the fear that oozed out of her pores. One of the men behind her dared touch her hair and she jerked her head to avoid him. They began to close in on her
Niquel sat on his leather office chair, overlooking the nightscape of the city, its lights like a carpet of stars reflecting the cloudy night sky. Its residents still wide awake, the never-ending stream of people that looked like a colony of ants from his vantage point, and perhaps they were – laboring all day and night to feed themselves until they reached the end of their short-lived lives. Sometimes he wondered if he would be doing the same had he not been granted more than a thousand times their lifespan – what he would do with his time, knowing full well that tomorrow or any second of today might be the last of him or those he cared about. He crossed his legs as he watched them all below, through a glass wall that reflected his lonely self, and the dim lights above him. It wasn’t always like this – just him and the city by the end of the day. He used to have a place he could return to, and she’d be there waiting for him and g
Vanessa flipped pancakes on two pans so they could eat sooner. The milky aroma made Emma hungrier. She must’ve added more eggs and butter – yum! “So … he didn’t ask for your number or anything else?” she asked as Emma nursed Gladdy while walking around the small apartment, her arms getting sore. Her baby had been gaining weight and she couldn’t be any less happy. Since Emma came home a little late last night, Van was late for work and her nasty boss didn’t stop nagging her for it the entire time of her shift – the customers could hear him and gave her sympathetic looks but at least she received more tips. “Well?” Van asked as she flipped her long blonde hair, and Emma rolled her eyes at her. She owed her friend an explanation and so she told her the truth - about the man who saved her, how he saved her, and that she lied to him about her name and where s
The long drive was silent, the soft snores of her friend, Van, in the background. From the sideview mirror, Emma had her eyes closed too, but Niquel could tell that she wasn’t asleep. Gladdy - it was a beautiful name for the baby. She was sleeping too, cradled safely on the arms of her lovely mother. After a year, she hadn’t moved on from Dylan’s passing. It was evident in the way she behaved when he came up. Niquel was a walking reminder of him and seeing him in person must’ve been like seeing him once more. It was the only choice Niquel had, and it took everything in him to hold himself back from comforting her in his arms the way she liked it and assure her that it’d be alright – she wouldn’t have to endure anymore hardships because he was there. But it wasn’t as easy as it sounded. In the cramped space, her scent was drove him crazy – the sweet fragrance of vanilla and freshly baked bread made his mouth
“Why would you look for him?” she asked. “He wasn’t a somebody. He had no connections to the high-end community. If he did, he would’ve told me.”Her voice carried a tone of anxiousness – of course, they didn’t keep secrets from each other. Except that he lied to her or kept his origins hidden for reasons, primarily to protect her because their kind didn’t crossbreed, especially with mortals. He made a wrong move when he marked her though, thankfully, having been kept in the dark, even if she came across one of them, she’d come across as ignorant. He … realized that just then.“Perhaps it would be best if we talked about this some other time, Emma,” he said. “It will be too much for you take in now, and for today, I just want to remember my friend.”She didn’t reply.“I&r
“What made you change your mind?” Henry asked with a straight face. He was leaning onto the office desk, which had to be replaced after that day. It was about time too – it was probably the oldest thing in the office.“He stalked her,” said Hunter as if it was a completely normal thing to do. Wearing a light blue shirt, leather jacket, and dark blue denim jeans, with aviator glasses clipped on his shirt’s neckline – either he was going to the Angel’s Club or that he had a date – probably both.“That’s unlike you,” said Henry. “Will you take the mate bond seriously now?”Aidan looked him straight in the eye. “No.”“Asshole.”Henry must really like this girl to cuss – swear words rarely came out of his mouth. Hunter raised a brow at his broth
“Ms. Emma … or would you prefer ‘Dami’ instead?” he smirked, and she blushed.“Emma … Sir.”“Let’s start over, shall we?” he said. “Henry asked me to look into West Side, with regards to plans of branching out. I happened to be at the same place as you were, and good thing I was else you wouldn’t be here right now.”Emma looked down, cheeks taking on a deeper shade. Aidan didn’t mean to embarrass her, but what would she think of him if he admitted that he was indeed stalking her. Her apple cheeks had a naturally rosy color to them but seeing them deepen in color … had a certain charm to it.“I like it,” Arke commented. He was fully awake, wagging his tail excitedly at her presence.“I’m sorry,” she said. “I … jus
Niquel watched Emma from across the street. She was seated in front of a coffee shop, waiting for him. He couldn’t keep himself from calling her last night just to hear her voice. And he almost hit his head on his desk when he asked her to meet up with him. As expected, she was about ten minutes early from their agreed-upon time. Typical Emma.He crossed the street. Emma was busy with her phone, scrolling through something with her brows furrowed in concentration. Just watching her triggered his beast awake. It wanted to feel her again, the mark on her neck keeping him in check. His senses let him know that there were women checking him out, but he didn’t pay them any attention. The supernatural beings knew who he was and unlike the humans, they kept their distance and minded their own business. Might as well – Niquel had no interest in any other women but
From the panel on the side, Niquel swiped over a card. The door opened with a mechanical whirr, signaling the captive that he had a visitor. There was but one chair in the room, and the cameras on all four corners were off. A tattoo of a dragon breathing fire from its open mouth decorated the captive’s entire upper half, leaving only patches of skin uninked. He huffed, mocking the visitor.“I suppose I must be honored to be graced by the presence of the Dragon King,” he greeted.Niquel draped his jacket over the only chair in the room after placing it nearer the man, who breathed heavily through his nose. “You should be,” he replied. “I’m on a tight schedule.”Scorch marks lined the floor from where the man was tied. No wonder they had a difficult time getting him to talk. His ton
The thick titanium infused doors opened before Niquel. Lights immediately turned on, illuminating an empty passage between the outside world and the highly guarded prison and torture facility. Cameras situated on the corners followed his every move – he paid them no heed, resisting the urge to burn them. He had never been fond of being watched of. For days, Niquel had been waiting for results, only to be disappointed every time the reports said the same thing – the captive continued to act mute. He ambled through the passage alone, his jacket creasing from his tight grip. Stains were unavoidable, hence why he preferred to have others extract information for him. The thought of what he was being forced to do irritated him more. He had to meet his wife and child tonight, and he was on a tight schedule as it was – at most, he had only an hour to make the captive talk.
“You said you wouldn’t hurt me,” she whispered as she curled her fingers against her chest. “That was Hunter, mate.” He reached out to touch her face, but she irked away from him in disgust. “Haven’t you learned your lesson yet?” “Please don’t touch me.” Her voice cracked, and more tears fell. “Listen to her,” Hunter pleaded. Haisek ignored him. He held her arm and she screamed. “Why are you still crying!” he demanded, annoyed to the fullest. He caught her arms again and pinned them down and placed his weight on her thighs, so she’d stop struggling. “Stop … please …” “Stop crying!” he shouted. Why wouldn’t she calm down. He wouldn’t take advantage of her and intentionally physically harm his mate without a justifiable reason. An act of weakness was beneath him. But it was
He could keep a serious relationship, couldn’t he? He used to sleep with numerous girls and took none of them seriously, but he could be loyal and caring and sensitive ... to his mate.“What’s wrong with me?” he questioned. He treated her like one of his past times, letting his ego answer for him. For fuck’s sake, he wanted her to stay with him and do things with her – whatever she wanted because all he could think of were of a sexual manner.“What was that!” Haisek roared. He emerged from the dark corners of his mind and showed himself, teeth bared. “Go after her.”Hunter tried to raise his wall. “I just gave her what she wanted,” he said weakly.“This isn’t what she wants.”“Well, shit, Haisek … I d
Just as he surmised, they arrived a quarter before ten. Hunter expected her to be in bed by then. He had to sleep alone in his own bed since the previous night because she decided to sleep on the couch, and he couldn’t have that. So he gave her a separate room. Unfortunately, the closest one available was on the opposite end of his. And unsurprisingly, as he tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep, his wolf whispered a risky idea in his head. Late into the night, he secretly went into her room and kissed her goodnight. Only then was he able to rest in his own room. “Well, here’s to another night of sulking,” he muttered as they walked in. “What are you gonna do?” Aidan had a scowl on his face. Even his mate had been distancing herself from him, obviously unhappy about their situation. It didn’t help that his work was keeping him preoc
“She hang up on me,” said Hunter with a look of disbelief. “Of all my years … no one had ever done this to me!” He sent the rogue flying towards the ceiling. Another came for him right after, and he quickly reached out to break his windpipe, bringing him down on his knees. It was far from enough to calm him down at this moment. His fists went down on the rogue’s face as he shouted, “Why. Are. Humans. So. Fucking. High. Maintenance!” A hand stopped him from landing another punch on the rogue’s broken nose. He looked back and saw that it was Aidan, whose eyes were gleaming a deep dark red. The Alpha was simmering in anger, but he was being more patient than him by giving the girls some space, which was an unlikely trait. Was he actually guilty about the whole thing? They were in danger for fuck’s sake! If they left the mansion, they’d be stepping out of the barrier which had been keeping them alive for a week
Vanessa peeked from the door. “Hey,” she whispered, just in case the baby was asleep. Emma was folding the laundry, which she recognized as those that Niquel bought for her and for Gladdy. It was already past noon, but she was still wearing her pajamas, and the bed was a mess. She looked up from the cute pink onesie she was folding and offered a tired smile. Dark circles lined under her eyes and her lips were chappy from dehydration. Gladdy was on the floor, playing in her own pseudo jail of a playground. The child was already crawling, the giant teddy bears looking down on her. It was a wonder Emma hadn’t tried to escape until now. So far, there were no attempts at her life and Gladdy’s for a week, but the stress of being in this new environment where she wasn’t allowed anywhere near the door was beginning to physically show on her friend. A
Her thick lashes curled against her blushing skin as she sucked in a breath. Aidan dipped his head, warm breaths fanning her neck. She had the most intoxicating scent Aidan had ever encountered. It set her apart from all other women he had been with, and he had no intention of letting the Dragon King have his way with her. It was far too late to renege on his claim – he would make her his for good just as he must. Even if his pride wasn’t in complete agreement, his ego couldn’t take letting the overgrown lizard have what belonged to them since birth. A growl rumbled from his chest. Arke was please with her docile stillness. Surely the bond was doing wonders on her body simply from being this close to him. “Emma,” he murmured as his lips descended on her tender skin. Tingly sparks crept under his skin, fueling images in his mind that would serve to excite her. She gasped and grabbed his arms. His gums itched
He was a werewolf. They were given one mate for life and that was it. There had to be a reason why the Moon Goddess mated them together and he’d rather lose his rank than lose her then. Besides, he made a promise that he’d cherish his mate forever when he found her. Goddess, if his sister was still around, she’d be screaming his ear off because he actually thought about rejecting his mate.“Have a seat,” he said, motioning for her to sit opposite him.Emma glanced at Niquel before turning her back on him. “Leave,” she said quietly.See how that feels. What she did to him earlier was something only three women in his life were capable of, including her. Aidan met the dragon’s burning gaze. Such a shame that he had to be told the same – they were even.“Please … just go, Niq.”
