River finds it hard to forget about McKenzie. Even though she only spent a few hours with him. He gave her such a strong impression of strength and someone she could depend on. Realm has been asking her to call him every hour which also keeps him in her mind. Lolita had argued with her again this morning. In the end she had just walked out and ignored her. She is counting the days now until her father gets the DNA report hoping he’ll see the light and throw them out for good.
When she got to work, she found that her boss Mr. Burns had entered some data wrongly and had to quickly input the data correctly before the morning meeting. Mr. Burns the head of her department, didn’t get to see the results of the data, after she corrected it. So, said the wrong thing during the meeting. River had to stand-up and take over.
After the meeting ended, Mr. Burns tried to blame her. So, she had told him that it was he, who had entered the data wrongly and if it wasn’t for her correcting his mistake then it would have been, even worse. Only their big boss had heard and reprimanded Mr. Burns, also gave him a stern warning, that it was not to happen again.
Which would have been fine if he had stopped there, but he had then gone on to praise River. She watched as Mr. Burns face had become red with anger and indignation. After that, he had snapped and given her twice as much work as she’d usually have.
It took her three hard long days to get through it and now she had to analyse all the results and write up her reports accordingly. It is now Wednesday and all she wants to do is go home and climb into her bed and sleep. River trudges from the bus stop to her home with heavy footsteps.
When she reaches the end of the driveway, she hears Lolita yelling at one of the house staff. She bypasses the front door and goes around to the back door. As she enters, Lolita throws a plate that just misses her head.
“Everyone, leave the kitchen” River orders them. “I haven’t finished yet!” Lolita cries, “you aren’t the one paying their wages, either! So, why should they have to listen to your temper tantrums, again?” River asks not in the mood for this at all.
Lolita glares at her, “have you forgotten about your mother’s junk in the attic?” she threatens, River walks up close, making her back up against the wall. River looks down at her “I’m sick and tired of your threats. Try it and see what I’ll do?” River warns her. Once she leaves the kitchen, she tells the staff that she will report everything to her father and tells them to leave for the day.
That night Lolita and her mother go out together, all dressed up. They are probably just going out clubbing again. Which they do sometimes. They come back drunk, waking River up. “That guy looked as though he was really into you mum, you should have gone with him?” Lolita slurs loudly.
“We have to be careful, don’t we. That young man that was hanging around you was pretty, but you could tell by his clothes he didn’t have money. I’ll have you marry a rich man, for sure” her mother tells her as they walk up the stairs.
“I want someone that will think of me and only me, his whole life” Lolita wishes making her mother chuckle. “I’ll see what I can do” her mother says and they go into their own rooms.
River thinks about all the things they’ve done to her and the staff. She gets up and sends a text to her father ‘I hope your well, but I can’t not say anything now. The people you’ve brought into our home are nothing but lowlife bullies. Look in your laptop, file named Do You Really Want To, Know? I had to install hidden cameras. You’ll know why, once you look through the file. Bye from your very disappointed daughter’ she reads it through before sending it. “About time you did something” Realm moans ignoring her she then goes back to sleep for a few more hours.
She gets up and readies herself for work. There is no sign of Kitty or Lolita which lets her grab a proper breakfast, before heading out for the bus. She keeps checking her phone to see if her father has got back to her, but so far there is nothing.
She can’t help checking it all through the day. By the time work has finished she is upset that her father hasn’t gotten back to her. She can see he’s read it, so doesn’t understand why he hasn’t gotten back to her.
As she gets ready to leave work, her phone rings and she answers it thinking it might be her father. “Ms. Rivers, It’s Mr. Baxter your father’s secretary, your father has had a turn and is being taken to hospital” she is told. “How? Where is he being taken?” she asks feeling dizzy.
“Principal hospital” he answers her. “I’m on my way” she says before ending the call. She grabs her bag and runs down the stairs unwilling to wait for the elevator. She then flags down a taxi and tells him to take her to the hospital.
When she gets there, she asks the front desk where her father is? They look him up, on the computer and then glance at her. “The A & E doctor attended him. Just walk to the end of the corridor and go through the double doors at the end. Ask for Dr Kettler” she is instructed. She thanks them and rushes down the corridor to the double doors.
She asks a nurse for Dr Kettler and they point to a man standing in front of a computer. “Dr Kettler? I’m the daughter of Sam Kenzie” she tells him. He looks up at her and then shakes his head “sorry we did all we could to revive him, but it was too late. He’d had a massive heart attack, sorry for your loss” he tells her.
River sways on her feet and grabs the desk she is standing next too. Dr Kettler moves a chair and tells her to sit down. He then tells a nurse to bring her a soda and chocolate bar. “Sit here until you feel better. Your father has been moved down to the morgue. Once you’ve contacted the funeral home, they’ll arrange for someone to pick him up” he tells her.
“Can I see him?” she asks, he looks a little shocked, but agrees calling a porter to take her down there. Then she is taken down into the depths of the hospital basement. Her mind starts wondering, why he didn’t have his heart medication on him. He had always been as healthy as a horse when her mother was alive. It was shortly after he’d emailed her about his marriage. That she heard about his heart problems.
River is led into a white sterile looking room with three metal slabs in the centre of it. “Please wait here I’ll notify them, that you are here and they’ll bring the bod, er the person you wish to see out” the porter hastily corrects himself. River nods and he leaves the room.
Her mind is thinking of all sorts of things, why did this happen now? She had thought he would see for himself. What the woman he married was like. “He didn’t have a heart attack after reading the DNA report, did he?” she mutters to herself. Her subconscious instantly says no, to this thought though. Her father had run his own company for years. He didn’t get to where he is today by being soft hearted.
Her thoughts come to a halt when a middle-aged man comes into the room wearing a doctor’s white coat. “Hello my name is Dr Dure, I’m sorry for your loss. If you’ll follow me to the viewing room, you can see your father” he tells her. She nods and feels the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She has never seen a dead body before and this is her father. She takes a deep breath and follows Dr Dure out of the morgue.
He walks through another door just down the corridor. River blinks, as this room seems much whiter and brighter than the last one. There is just one bed in the middle of the room with a white sheet covering the person underneath. “I’ll leave you for a minute, to say your goodbyes” Dr Dure says, he leaves at River’s nod.
She doesn’t move at first, she has to ready herself. Once she is a little calmer, she walks up to the bed and pulls down the sheet to uncover her father’s face and neck. He looks as though he is just sleeping. She moves a little closer and that is when she notices the bruise under his left eye, she looks closer and see’s scratch marks on his neck.
Before she has really given it much thought, she has taken out her phone and taken pictures of them and then a video as she checks his hands and arms too. She finds another bruise on his right arm, this one is thin and long. She hears someone walking towards the room and quickly covers her father back up.
“I promise to find out what happened” she vows as the door is pushed open. Her tears finally start to fall, at the thought someone might have done something terrible to her father. “It’s okay, I’m sure they know your thoughts and feelings. Not everyone can bring themselves to look” a younger man wearing a white coat says.
“Do you have his personal effects?” River sniffs trying to stem the tears, now falling down her face. “Yes, I just need you to sign for them, please” the young man says. She nods and turns back around for one last look at her covered father. She then walks towards the door and follows the young man to a locker’s further down the corridor. “Mr. Kenzie’s belongs are in here” the young man says. He opens the locker and gives her a white bag that resembles a trash bag, only this has the hospital logo on it. “If you can just sign here to say you’ve taken them. Your father’s suit jacket is also in there, as he wasn’t wearing that. But it was given to the paramedics that brought him in. We’ve removed his ring, watch and the pendant he was wearing under his shirt” she is told.
With shaking hands, she signs the book to say she has picked up her father’s belongings and her driving licence number is also requested. She takes it out of her bag and copies the number onto the collection form. “I’ll just scan that please” the man says and she gives it to him to scan.
He gives it back to her “sorry for your loss, here is our card, for you to pass to the funeral home, you’ll use” he tells her giving her a card with the numbers to get in touch with and a patient number. “Thank you, do I have to go up the way I came?” she asks him.
He smiles and shakes his head “I’ll let you out the back entrance, it’s much easier and less people will bother you” he offers. River tries a watery smile and wipes her face with the sleeve of her jacket. “Sorry, here some tissues” the young man says pulling a few from a packet he had in his pocket.
He leads her around a corner and then up a small flight of stairs before using his work ID to open the door they come too. “It takes you out onto Main and 6th Street” he says River thanks him and walks through the door. She has to walk up a ramp that trucks use, for loading and unloading and then finds herself around the west side of the hospital.
She carries on walking as her mind starts to ponder what the hell she just saw and why she thought it best not to ask questions about the marks she found, on her father? Having the mind that she has and in the work that she does. Her mind starts to think about a time line. She had sent the DNA report to her father. She hadn’t wanted it delivered to her. In case she was accused of forging it. She also sent her father a text that she knew he read. With that thought she looks through the bag she is holding and finds her father’s phone.
His password has always been her mother’s birthday. Would he still be using it? She types it in and the phone unlocks. She looks at his most recent messages. He did read her text, he also texted someone called Eggs. He had texted that he had sent him a video file just in case. Just in case? What? River wonders.
River needs time and space to think. Her laptop is in her bedroom. She looks at the time and jumps into another taxi. “Realm what do you think happened?” she asks “not sure but something isn’t right. Best keep our guard up” she answers. River asks him to stop, when she sees the Main train station. Pays him and runs into the train station and looks around. Seeing the lockers, travellers can use. So, they don’t have to take all their luggage with them. She stuffs the hospital bag with her father’s things in one and pays for 24 hours rental.
She then goes back out and walks to the bus stop. She is not sure why she is being so paranoid. But something is bothering and she has always listened to her gut and Realm agrees with her. She then takes the bus back home. Kitty’s car and Lolita’s are not there, she wonders if they too have gone to the hospital. She runs to the front door and goes up to her room, she puts her laptop, passport, the little bit of money she has stashed for a rainy day and some clothes into a backpack. Then she checks outside and puts the backpack just under her window that is obscured with a tree’s branches, growing in the garden below her window. She hears Lolita’s little sports car, before she sees her turning into their road. She quickly shuts her window and unlocks her bedroom door. Runs down to the kitchen and grabs a glass of water and then leans against the counter top. Kitty’s car follows Lolita’s into the driveway. River thinks of her father laying in that cold sterile room and tears come to her eyes again.
The front door is banged open “shh” she hers Kitty say. “River are you home?” she calls out, River doesn’t say anything. But it’s not long before the kitchen door is pushed open. “There you are! Why didn’t you answer me?” Kitty says
River looks up at her and blinks making more tears fall from her face. “Oh honey, we are all sad. It’s a horrible thing, really” Kitty says walking up to her and patting her arm awkwardly. Not looking sad at all. “You can smell she’s not in the least say” Realm agrees. “They said, you’d been to see him?” Kitty continues watching River closely “I couldn’t, I couldn’t” River says, “they said you couldn’t bring yourself to look. That’s a good thing. You should remember him for how he was. So, you didn’t remove the sheet?” Kitty asks Something tells River to shake her head no. “She has something to do with all this! I can smell her lies” Realm growls. River gulps down some of the water she is holding. “But you did pick up his things that’s good. Where are they?” she asks a little too keenly. River looks around the kitchen as though searching for the bag. Lolita and Kitty look around too, not seeing it, they look at River again. “It was a white bag” River says “yes, but wher
“I want you to go with her. Stop whatever that woman is planning! I want to know her full background before the end of the day” McKenzie instructs. “Yes Al, er boss” Tom agrees and links the driver to meet them outside and with a number of their security team to follow them. With instructions to call McKenzie boss in front of River. McKenzie links the security team watching her house to search it if no-one is inside. As they need the ID documents that Kitty and her daughter have. He then goes to his bedroom. “River, I took the liberty of ordering some clothes for you. They are hanging in my closet” he says as he walks in. River is standing in her underwear looking through her backpack as he walks in. “You did?” she turns and asks. McKenzie has never seen anyone more beautiful. “Mate!” Astro growls. He has to give his head a little shake and blink before being able to reply “yes, here look?” He opens the closet door and walks in, followed by River. Her eyes widen when sh
She hears McKenzie gasp and looks towards him “you are not a dog and you are beautiful” he tells her. “He thinks fur, four legs and a snout are beautiful? Please let me be dreaming! I cannot be a dog!” she exclaims to herself. “You are not a dog. You are a wolf” McKenzie tells her. “Wolf, dog, what’s the difference? It has to be a dream! A very strange, painful dream.” “River, nice to finally meet you. I’m Realm your spirit wolf” she hears Realm say. “Oh, please don’t tell me that I’ve had a psychotic break! But why a dog? Most people change into another person, but me! I turn into a talking dog!” River exclaims and hides her head in her paws. “Wolf!” she hears McKenzie and Realm say together. She lifts her head and looks at McKenzie “Why are you not freaking out and how can you understand what I’m thinking?” she asks in her head. “I’m wondering that too? We haven’t mated fully?” he questions “you bit me and swallowed my blood! Did that trigger your first shift? That would
“Shit! I forgot she had my blood! It was just a goodbye” “I don’t want to know! STOP NOW! You’re hurting her” Tom says before closing down the link. “It’s okay, River. I’m here, I won’t let him hurt you, as my father did my mother” Tom assures her, wiping her forehead again as she moans and whines in her sleep.30 minutes later McKenzie enters the bedroom. River is sitting up in bed looking pale and warn out. He growls when he sees she has a hold of Tom’s hand. He stops when Tom turns and glares at him. “River had some very strange dreams and doesn’t feel very well. She said, it’s like her heart is unbalanced or missing something!” Tom tells him.“Don’t you dare glare at me, while you still have the stench of the other woman on you!” he warns McKenzie through their link. This shocks McKenzie as he can feel his real anger towards him. Something that has never happened before. He knows about what his mother went through, with his cheating father and lets it go. How are you fee
McKenzie enters her bedroom and gently places her back on her feet, her nerves have gone. Replaced by a burning need, for him. He looks deep into her eyes “I’ll be gentle” he assures her. “I don’t want gentle. I want you now!” she demands pulling him in and kissing him passionately. Making Grant moan and his hands to slip under her dress in the search of bare skin. With the mating bond, the tingles and their emotions from waiting, they come together explosively, not caring about their clothes and how they come off. Once they are naked, McKenzie lays her down on her back on the bed. Then shows her how much he cares and loves her. Making her moan, and him groan with his own growing need. He is sane enough to make sure that he prepares her well. Kissing and nibbling at her flesh, when he takes a hardened nipple into his mouth. River feels things begin to build inside her. She pushes herself more into him and he gently bites her nipple and soothes it with his tongue. His hand
“First blood” McKenzie says stepping into the circle. “Alright then, we’ll fight in our human form” River agrees having the right to decide in which form they fight. “Huh to scared to fight my wolf?” Jean mocks “no, my wolf wouldn’t stop until your heart, wasn’t beating anymore! I’m keeping her in check as she feels very upset about you disrespecting us!” River says ever so calmly. She does some stretches as she circles Jean. She then takes her stance and cocks her head, for Jean to come at her. She does angrily and River waits until the last moment to dodge her attack and throw out her leg. Kicking Jean in her side. Jean flies to the other side of the circle, landing on her butt. Her eyes narrow at River and she charges again, this time River catches the punch thrown towards her face. She squeezes her fist around Jean’s and doesn’t release her, until she cries out. River stands her ground and waits to see if she submits. Jean though tries to catch her off guard by throwing
So, River starts to train more both physically and mentally. She tries to see if she can first sense every member of the pack via the link they share and then once she feels their presence, gets to know what each member feels like. As each one is different and unique. The more in tune she gets with the whole pack the more she starts to feel connected to them. But is time consuming and trying but she keeps at it.She gets so good though that she can even feel when a new mother is getting tired and stressed out from looking after their new pups. Sending people, to help them or send them food. Once she is sure she can protect the members of the pack. She asks McKenzie if he knows of any witches that wouldn’t mind if they train with her. After much thought he asks an old family friend if they can practise with her. They have to travel there, so River concentrates on work while she waits for them to arrive. They are getting more orders with the new equipment she bought. But they
Her mate runs into the clearing still pulling on his shirt. River spotting Greg, nods for him to stay close to Maggie. “I believed that everyone respected the gift that the moon Goddess blesses us with. Not everyone gets to find their mate. So, when they do. I thought they’d respect that gift and their mate. Yet, Phillip here, doesn’t! While out for a run” River feels McKenzie arrive in the clearing but doesn’t turn around. “I came across Maggie, his mate. She had moved as far away from the living quarters as she could. So, she could suffer alone while Phillip here had sex with?” River says sniffing the air. Her nostrils flare as she scents who he was with. She scans the crowd and her eyes zero in on Amanda an unmated she wolf. “Kneel” River says with such restrained anger that the whole pack feel it. Amanda unable to ignore her Luna’s authority kneels down and bares her neck.McKenzie is trying to reach River through their link, but she has put up her wall and blocking h
Once everyone is back and reassured the threat to their pack has gone. McKenzie tells them they will be having a cook out. “We are pleased to inform everyone that my mate is pregnant” McKenzie tells everyone having left the pack link open, so the people not there could also hear him. The mood of the pack instantly becomes much merrier. They all start to congratulate them. Both personally and over the link. They celebrate until long after the sun has gone down. There is music, dancing and much laughter, as the youngest run around and play with one another. McKenzie and River feel the happiness of the pack through the link. Which brings them much relief and happiness also. When they go back to their home in the early hours of the morning. McKenzie makes love to his mate very slowly. Showing her just how much she means to him. He becomes excited when he too feels the baby move. He has tears of joy in his eyes as he joins with his mate and brings them to completion. “I love y
McKenzie puts her down on a chair in the kitchen and then goes to the oven and takes out the stew. “How did you know the high council were going to turn up?” he asks her as he sits down beside her. “I got an image of three men in cloaks looking annoyed. They were outside the pack house. I asked Tom if he knew of any people that wore cloaks and he said the high council” River explains“High council on official business. I guess they heard of what happened to Dan’s coven. Well, we’ll deal with it when they turn up” McKenzie says rubbing her back for comfort. River looks at him and smiles “I thought once we dealt with the witches. We would be able to enjoy our life and I’d be able to sit down and think about, this little one we made. Now we have to deal with the high council! I can tell you Realm and I are a thin thread away from losing our shit!” River admits and McKenzie see’s Realm, flash into River’s eyes. Telling him that she will not allow anyone, even the high council to
McKenzie holds his sleeping mate. Really not wanting to leave her. But if he is leave here without being caught, he must. He kisses her head and goes to move his arms from around her. River wakes up, turns and looks at him sleepily.“Sorry love, I really need to go” he apologises. “Thank you, for staying with me. It is going to be a long day. I’ll leave our link open. I think it’s best if we don’t actually, see each other until after its all over. I hope it’ll be all over” River says. He kisses her and then gets up out the bed. “Go back to sleep love, it’s still early” he tells her.She watches him, pull on his clothes and then he comes and kisses her again before leaving. She tries to go back off to sleep again. She hugs McKenzie’s pillow to her face and breaths in his scent. It allows her to get another couple of hours sleep. Then it’s time for her to get up and put her game face back on.“Love, Dan’s wife has spent the night drinking and it drunkenly casting spells a
They wake in the morning, with a new sense of urgency and determination that they should end this as soon as they can. McKenzie calls Tom, Greg, and some of the other key pack members to their house. River is making breakfast. She started with sausages, then thought eggs would be nice. Started making toast and then also harsh browns in the end everyone had a full English breakfast with a plate of pancakes on the side.As they sit and eat around the table. McKenzie explains River’s plan. She doesn’t say much just concentrates on eating. “Greg, are you going to eat that sausage?” she asks “er” “thanks” River says taking it from his plate and biting half of it and then eating the rest. Greg looks at McKenzie who gives him one of his sausages, shaking his head to not say anything.“Are none of you having the pancakes?” she asks standing and getting the Nutella from the cupboard. They watch as she spreads it thickly onto a pancake and then pours syrup over it before rolling it and
River and McKenzie decided that a stir fry would be good enough for dinner. They put all the left overs in a pan and add some noddle’s, onion, garlic and pepper to it and let it simmer. While they go up to change. “Have you heard anything from the guard watching Bingo?” River asks “he has gone to the coast. Just staying in his hotel room” McKenzie tells her.“He could be just waiting it out or be giving instructions via phone calls” River guesses, then looks at her stomach as it rumbles. The food can now be smelt, up in their room. “It should be ready soon” McKenzie says putting his arms around her and placing his large hands over her little bump.“You have to promise me, you won’t do anything that will put you or our child at risk! I can’t lose you River” he tells her kissing her neck and breathing deeply as he tries to calm himself. “You too” she says turning in his arms and hugging him.Her stomach rumbles again “I only had breakfast and then some of Nancy’s muffins” River
River is full of questions. Didn’t they take precautions during her heat? She is meant to be able to only get pregnant when she is in heat, right? Is she ready to be a parent? How do you explain to your child that their patents have an age gap of nearly 80 years? Will McKenzie get up and take turns, doing nappy changes? She could get a breast pump and make him do his share of the feeding too. How is she meant to run a company while pregnant? What does it mean to be pregnant as a shifter? They’ll need to baby proof all three homes. What if she’s a terrible mother? She wishes her mother were still alive. Is McKenzie going to still want her, when she’s fat? She is just having one pup and not a litter? All these things run through her mind as she drives out of the city and towards the pack.“River, relax everything is going to be fine” Realm assures her. “Fine for you to say, you’re not the one that has to push them out? Or can you? I’ll shift allow you to give birth to the
River is just stepping from the shower when her phone rings. It’s Dan’s number. “Heads up” she says before she answers “Dan, its late?” she questions “River, River” Dan slurs down the phone “I feel terrible” he continues. “Are you drunk Dan?” she asks “I might have had a drink or twooooo” he laughs “I like you, River” he suddenly says and River hears McKenzie growl in her head. “You’re drunk Dan, best sleep it off” she says “I’m really sorry, ahh!” Dan cries and there is a crash as though he’s fallen.“Dan, Dan are you alright? Dan, can you hear me?” River asks but there is no reply. “Okay stay there, I’ll come and check you’re okay” she says down the phone. “Why are you talking, when no-one is listening? Good job, I have my car here” she says as though to herself before she ends the call. “I don’t know if this is planned or not. But I’ll go check he’s alright or what he wants” she links.“Keep the link open love, and please remember we are very jealous creatures!” McKenzie w
She explains where everything is and turns the water back on. They leave him their cell phone numbers before leaving him. McKenzie opens the passenger door for River to get in and they both laugh and talk while they search, if he has put any listening devices into the car. They don’t find any, but keep the conversation light just in case.“I suppose I’ll have to go to work now, just to give him a chance to seek me out. I’ll be careful and I have Nancy as well as Bryan and Douglas there to protect me, during working hours” River links him “I’ll send along some extra security that will stay close by, in case you need them” McKenzie addsRiver doesn’t really want to leave the pack Monday morning. But they need to see, what they are planning. Her dreams have given her glimpse’s, but they are mixed in with things from the past and she’s having a hard time, figuring out if they mean anything or not. Realm seems a little out of sorts too. Even though her and Astro had a good run over
“I know your sorry, my emotions seem to be seesaw from one extreme to the next. It must be because, I’m worrying about the pack and the people trying to harm us” River says. “Right, I’ll run you a bath and then you can sleep. I’ll add some relaxing bath salts to the water” McKenzie tells her.She puts her arms around him and hugs him. “We will get through this River, I’m sure we can” McKenzie says stroking her back trying to reassure her. She takes a deep breath and tries to calm herself. “Alright, I’m good. Thank you, but I think I just want to grab a quick shower and go to bed. I really do feel exhausted” she says. McKenzie kisses her and then takes her upstairs. He turns on the shower while she undresses. After taking a quick shower and brushing her teeth, she gets into bed and falls asleep nearly instantly. McKenzie puts the mac and cheese in a container. Clears up the kitchen and then gets ready for bed himself. He is very happy being able to hold his mate tonight.
