03|Don't you dare!

Two days had passed since the whole incident, and I had been trying nonstop to push it all behind me, to forget it. But, as expected, it was easier said than done. Every time I woke up, it was the first thing on my mind. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it—whether I was happy that I’d lost my virginity to Alaric, or if I was more upset that I couldn’t remember a single detail of it.

It was driving me insane.

“I heard about your wedding, poor sister. I can’t believe Leon really cheated on you. I can’t even imagine what you must’ve felt that day. Such a pity I couldn’t attend,” my older step-sister, Isolde,’s voice sliced through the silence, dragging me back to the present.

I blinked, finding her seated in front of me with that all-too-sympathetic smile of hers. Her wavy blond hair cascaded softly over her shoulders as she watched me, her smile just subtle enough to feel condescending.

“Oh, right, I heard about it too. Haha, I heard you walked out of the venue, that’s pretty cool, little sis, there is even a video going around about it. I watched it several times!” her twin brother, Kieran, chimed in, tearing his gaze from his phone to smirk playfully at me.

“Cool? You mean embarrassing. Isla, why do you always do things like this? How could you disgrace the Ashford name like that? Do you have any idea what people are saying? You should think about your father’s reputation for once, you shouldn't have caused such a scene!” my stepmother snapped, dropping her cutlery onto the plate with a sharp clang.

I stared at her with a blank expression, but my grip on the spoon tightened as I listened.

This was my family—the kind that blamed you for walking away from a cheating fiancé. The kind that didn’t even bother attending your wedding, choosing instead to go on a family vacation that very day.

My father had remarried when I was twelve. At first, I was genuinely happy. I thought I would finally have a mother, new siblings—even if we weren’t related by blood. But instead, my life turned sour in ways I never imagined.

The first year was fine. We laughed, we bonded, we felt like a real family. But then, overnight, everything changed. The kindness, the warmth, the closeness we once shared—it all vanished in the blink of an eye.

I shifted my gaze to the man seated at the table, his eyes focused on his food as he ate, completely unfazed by the chaos unfolding around him. But what did I expect? He had never truly shown any interest in me from the very beginning.

"L-Look at her, ignoring me just because I'm correcting her! Was what I said too much? Why are you not replying to me?!" my step mother suddenly lost it, her voice rising in frustration as she pointed a trembling finger at me, her glare sharp.

"Please calm down, Mother. Don't shout," Isolde spoke . "And Isla, Mother is only trying to correct you. You made a mistake—you shouldn’t have left Leon in the wedding hall. I spoke to him, and he was very sorry, he will do something about the pregnant woman. I really think you should work it out with him."

I blinked in disbelief at her words as I stared at her. Work it out with Leon? Was she really saying that right now, or was I hearing things?

Isolde smiled at my expression before speaking.

"I mean, I think you two are perfect for each other, and I believe Leon loves you a lot. You should give him a chance. It’s not good to end such a perfect relationship over a mistake."

Kieran, her twin brother, nodded in agreement.

"You see, that’s the thing about men. They might cheat, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love you. I mean, I’ve done it plenty of times, and I love my girlfriend dearly," he giggled, showing me a picture of the two of them together. "See? Don’t we look like we’re madly in love?"

Disgusting. That was the only word for the sick feeling churning in my stomach as I listened to them talk. Every word, every laugh—it was all disgusting, and it made my blood boil.

I took a shaky breath, forcing myself to stay calm, and shifted my gaze to my father. He was watching me now, his face unreadable as he casually wiped his mouth with a handkerchief.

I needed to get out of here.

"I-I will be leaving now," I whispered under my breath, pushing my glasses higher up the bridge of my nose as I attempted to stand. But my father's cold voice stopped me in my tracks.

"Sit."

The command was clear, leaving no room for disobedience.

I immediately stiffened, my body obeying before my mind even registered it. I sank back into my seat, my head bowed, feeling the weight of his gaze settle on me.

Was he going to tell me to give Leon another chance? To say I had made a mistake?

Whatever it was, I was prepared for it. I would refuse, no matter the consequences. I would rather die than let Leon back into my life.

The room fell silent. No one dared to speak when Father did.

"Are you done playing around now?" His voice was calm, but the underlying authority sent a chill down my spine.

I blinked, momentarily confused by his words—until his next sentence hit me like a thunderbolt.

"If you are, then get ready to start working at Voss Corporation starting tomorrow."

"W-what?" My mouth fell open in shock and disbelief.

He had to be joking. I must have misheard him. Because Voss Corporation belonged to the very man I was trying to avoid—the man I had spent the night with.

Alaric.

Oh, hell no.

I swallowed hard, my pulse quickening. My father’s gaze darkened at my expression. I knew that look. He hated repeating himself, but this time, he might have to—because I was absolutely stunned.

“Father! I thought you said I was the one who would work there?! Why did you pick Isla?!” Isolde yelled, her voice breaking with anger as she stared at him. But he merely ignored her, his gaze fixed on me instead.

“You know we’re securing a partnership with the Voss Company, and yesterday, Alaric suddenly requested that you work under him instead of Isolde. I trust you understand what that means?”

A scoff escaped my lips the moment I heard Alaric had requested me. Before I even realized it, I was on my feet, accidentally knocking over the chair behind me.

“I—I’m not doing it. I’m sorry, but I can’t work at Voss Corporation. You should have Isolde do it instead since she clearly wants it,” I stammered, bowing my head slightly toward my father before turning to leave the dining area.

However, before I could take another step, a sharp gasp escaped my lips as a glass flew past my head, shattering against the wall behind me. I froze in place.

“Don’t you dare!” He roared “Don’t you dare walk away while I am talking!”

Alaric, are you even listening to me?” Adam’s frustrated voice on the other line cut through my thoughts, snapping me out of my daze for the third time today. I ran a hand through my hair, exhaling slowly as the corner of my lips curled into a smirk. Ignoring the persistent ache in my pants, I leaned back in my chair, fingers tapping idly against the hard surface of my desk. Shifting slightly, I adjusted my position and lifted the phone higher, pretending to focus—when, in reality, my mind was still stuck on that sinful little voice. “Yes, I’m listening,” I drawled, my tone low and laced with boredom. “You were saying something about how evil I am, right? Please, go on. I’d love to hear more about how I’m the devil’s reincarnation.” Adam paused at my words before scoffing dramatically, then suddenly screamed, “I

Isla’s pov. “This is your new office, and I’ve printed out Mr. Voss’s schedule for you,” Liam, Alaric's other secretary, announced as he dropped what looked like an entire book onto the desk with a heavy thud. My jaw nearly hit the floor. Eyes wide, I turned to Liam, half-expecting him to burst into laughter and tell me it was all a joke. But instead, he simply flipped the book open with a practiced ease and pointed to a page. “If you go to page 24, you’ll find the CEO likes and dislikes,” he said matter-of-factly. “For example, here, it details exactly how Mr. Voss likes his coffee—black and bland, no sugar.” My eyes flickered to the line he was indicating, and sure enough, in bold letters, it read: Mr. Voss likes his coffee black and bland. No sugar and absolutely no milk. Please take note of this. I stared at the words in disbelief. What the actual hell? He didn’t really expect me to read and memorize all of this, right? “And here,” Liam continued, completely unfa

Isla’s pov. The hum of the coffee machine and the hushed whispers around me were the only sounds filling the break room as I prepared Alaric's coffee. "Did you hear? She's the boss’s new secretary—the daughter of the Ashford Corporation," one of the employees whispered, not doing a great job of keeping her voice down. "Really? Wait... you mean the one from that viral video? The one whose fiancé cheated, and the wedding got called off?" "Oh my God, yes! That’s her—Isla Ashford. Is she really working as the boss’s secretary? That’s pretty sad. What a pity... She’s going to suffer like the others." I gulped nervously, a shiver running down my spine as I tried to concentrate on the words in front of me while preparing Alaric’s coffee. But it was kind of hard to focus when people around me were whispering about how I was now working for the devil. Their words, not mine. Taking a deep breath, I narrowed my eyes at the book, trying to read the precise steps for making Alaric’s coffee

Isla’s pov. Everything seemed to freeze at that moment. No one moved. It was like pressing the pause button on a movie at its most intense scene. My mouth is hung open in shock, eyes wide with disbelief. Alaric, however, remained still, his gaze locked onto his burnt hand. His eyes narrowed as if trying to process what had just happened, the faint wisps of smoke curling from his scorched skin the only movement in the heavy silence. My heart dropped—no, my everything dropped. Shit. There was no way out of this. I was smart enough to know what came next—I was getting fired. And if I lost this job, my father wouldn’t hesitate to marry me off to that old man. But at least I’d still be alive. Getting killed by Alaric Voss over a spilled coffee? Now that would be the worst possible outcome. So… “I am so sorry,” I whispered, barely audible, before spinning on my heel and bolting for the door. Survival mode had officially kicked in. But I didn’t make it far. Before I could take a si

Instead, I cried. Instead, I let myself be weak. I should have gone full-on crazy. But I hadn’t. Because back then, the pain had drowned out the anger. It had clouded my mind, made it impossible to think straight. Now, though? Now the anger burned through me like wildfire. And all I could think about were his lies. His fake promises. Isla pov “What?” The word barely escaped my lips as I stared at my father in disbelief, my heart pounding so hard it echoed in my ears. I didn’t hear that correctly… right? There was no way my father had just told me to resign— no way he had just informed me that I was getting married. Yet… the man before me barely spared me a glance as he continued eating. “You’re not deaf. You heard me right, you’re getting married in a month. Resign from Voss Corporation. Isolde will be taking your place.” It felt like a bucket of ice-cold water had been dumped over me. I blinked, stumbling back. “Y-you—” My voice wavered, but I forced the words out. “What are you saying? Isla pov I stared blankly, my mind clouded with emotions all at once. Mortification, shock and fear all suffocated me at once. "What did I just do… What the hell did I just do?!" I groaned, gripping the steering wheel tighter before dropping my head against it with a dull thud, trying to wrap my head at what just happened with Alaric. I practically embarrassed myself, begging Alaric to make me cum, and when I finally did, it was unlike anything I had ever felt, it was intense and intoxicating. The pleasure was so consuming that I couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to take the real thing. But just as I was about to give in, ready to finally cross that line, Alaric caught my hand when I was about to reach for his pants, his grip firm yet gentle. "You’re not ready yet, little rose," he murmured, his voice rich with amusement. Then, as if he hadn’t just unraveled me completely, he leaned back, brushing a strand of hair from my face. Isla pov Did I trust him? I barely knew Alaric. We had hardly crossed paths before all of this because I had always avoided him. So how could he ask me that? No, that wasn’t the real question. The real question was, why had I answered so easily? Why couldn’t I push him away? Why hadn’t I just walked out and stopped whatever was happening? And more than anything… why had I said yes without hesitation? Why? Why? Why? I had so many questions racing through my mind, but my thoughts felt hazy, unable to focus on anything except the way Alaric's fingers plunged deep inside me, the way his tongue worked me over. Every stroke, every flick sent me spiraling over the edge, my body arching instinctively, desperate for more. "Fuck!" My head fell back against the sheets as he found that unfamiliar perfect spot again, sending pleasure rippling through me. My senses blurred, drowning in the ecstasy he mercilessly dragged me into. “Oh God! Alaric, right there— please” I pleaded, my

I’m so sorry, Alaric. I will resign, I am so stupid… I always drag everyone into my mess.” That was what she had said last night as she cried. But that wasn’t why I had been mad. The reason was the redness of her cheek, an unmistakable mark of a slap, and the blood trickling down her leg. Someone had done that to her and at that moment, I wanted to kill the bastard and even though she wouldn't tell me who it was, I wanted to make them bleed in the worst possible way. To take everything they loved, to break them until they had nothing left, until they were on their knees, begging for mercy from her. And I would. “Y-you erased the videos?” she stammered, her voice shaky. She looked flustered, disbelief written all over her face. With my eyes still closed, I suddenly let out a laugh at the absurd thought— the idea that someone, a man no less, and not just any man, but him was in the same bed as me right now. It was impossible. It couldn't be. Right? But the steady rise and fall of someone's bare chest beneath my hand proved otherwise and not to mention the fact that my leg was draped over him like a clingy koala. Shit. Slowly and cautiously, I cracked my left eye open, my pulse hammering in my ears as I desperately prayed that this wasn’t really happening. But to my utter dismay, the moment my vision adjusted, I saw him— Alaric, in all his handsome glory, asleep beside me. Even without my glasses, I knew it

James stood there, dressed in a simple sweater and trousers, hands tucked into his pockets, a frown tugging at his lips as he stared at me.
