Chapter Seventy-Six - Rising Phoenix

Ella's POV

A sarcastic slow clap echoed through the torch-lit cavern as River emerged from the shadows, his scarred face twisted into a terrible sneer.

"Well done, pet. I'm impressed you made it this far."

My heart sank, the brief flicker of hope guttering out. This had all been an elaborate trap, and I'd played right into his hands.

Lea growled uneasily, fur bristling at the monster leering hungrily at us across the vast empty space. But I forced my spine to straighten, refusing to cower. I may be his prisoner again, but he would never truly own me.

"Where are my mates?" I demanded, glare fixed steadily on River despite my quailing courage.

His answering laugh grated like gravel. "Still pining after those worthless mongrels? Don't worry, I'll make you forget their names soon enough." His heavy steps echoed as he stalked nearer.

I stood frozen, assessing my options desperately. Could I evade him and find an escape route somehow? But River moved with unnatural speed, circling behind
