Chapter 99

Author: Arlo Drake
The atmosphere felt unfamiliar to Serena. It almost felt like they were a family.

Wilson suddenly asked, "Your cooking skills are impressive. Did you hone them while you were with Justin?"

Serena blinked in surprise. "Well... I guess you could say that. He's quite picky, and if something's even slightly off, he won't eat it. Mr. Quade, why are you asking me this all of a sudden?"

Indeed, why did he? He was just torturing himself. He became slightly annoyed.

"I'm just curious. Is that such a crime?" Wilson asked.

Serena was rendered speechless. Why was he angry again?

While they ate, Bingo crouched nearby, peering out from under the couch. It seemed to want some food but was too shy to come closer.

Wilson threw a piece of beef in its direction. The piece was too large, and the kitten struggled to bite into it. Its efforts were surprisingly adorable.

But to his surprise, Bingo swiped the beef out of his hand, nudged his sleeve with its paw, and trotted over to Serena.

Wilson was a

"You broke up with her?" Serena asked.Justin hesitated for a moment before saying yes. Technically, it wasn't a complete breakup yet, but it would be soon. His eyes glistened as he added, "Serena, Candice is no longer in the picture. Come back to me. We'll be just like we were before. Nothing has changed."Serena, however, remained unmoved. "But I don't want to," she said.Justin froze.Serena's expression was cold. "I used to think you were my whole world, but after leaving you, I realized I could live without you. In fact, I'm living a better life without you.""I don't believe it. You loved me so much. How could you let go so easily?" Justin asked."In the beginning, it hurt," Serena admitted. "But now, it's nothing. I got used to it."She chuckled, "Habit is a strange thing. I could get used to loving you, but I can also get used to not loving you."Her calm expression made Justin uneasy.Suddenly, he grabbed her arm and stepped closer. "Love is a feeling on its own. It's

Only then did Desiree finally relent. The doctor advised keeping Gary under observation for the night. After being wheeled into the ward, Gary found an excuse to send Desiree away, leaving only Wilson for a private conversation. "Wilson, I need to have a word with you.""Go ahead," Wilson said.Gary exhaled heavily. "Tonight's scare made me realize that I'm not as young as I used to be. Who knows when my time will come…"Wilson remained calm, his expression unreadable. "Don't say that, Mr. Stone. You're still fit as ever. I'd say you've got another 50 years ahead of you.""I doubt I'll be that lucky." Gary chuckled, though the weariness lingered in his tone. His voice grew heavier as he patted Wilson's shoulder. "I've had my share of blessings in life. If my time comes, I won't have any regrets except for one thing. You know I only have Desiree. If I'm gone, who will be there to protect her?"Wilson immediately caught on to where this conversation was headed. "Mr. Stone, are you

The next morning, Serena stepped out of her apartment, ready to head to work. Across the hallway, a bouquet of roses lay near the door of the opposite apartment. There were about a dozen or so blooms casually placed on the ground. As she took notice of it, the door opened, and Willow stepped out in a light-colored casual suit. She greeted Serena with a smile but paused when her eyes landed on the flowers.Serena teased playfully, "Dr. Quade, a gift from one of your admirers?" "No idea. I just saw it too," Willow replied. She bent down to pick up the bouquet and found a small card nestled within the flowers. Reading the name on it, her expression stiffened. "Oh, it's him.""Who?" Serena asked curiously."One of those blind dates my family set up for me." Willow rolled her eyes dramatically as she stood up, joining Serena at the elevator.Serena raised a brow, amused. "A matchmaking candidate from the Quade family must come from some prestigious background, right? But this? Kind o

Lara's eyes suddenly widened in realization. "Mrs. Farrow, are you here to force Candice and Justin apart? Let me tell you, Candice and Justin are truly in love! If you think you can break them up, I'll be the first to object!"Jenna almost laughed out of sheer disbelief. She had initially thought Candice's family, despite their humble background, would at least have some semblance of decorum. Yet, the brashness of these two was truly embarrassing. Thank goodness Justin had come to his senses. If her son actually married into a family like this, her reputation in Nocturna's elite circles would be utterly ruined.Candice, embarrassed by her mother's outburst, tugged at Lara's arm. "Mom, please calm down. Justin and I haven't broken up.""I knew it! It must be this woman…" Lara wanted to continue."Mom, stop talking. Let me handle this, alright?" Candice interrupted before turning to Jenna. "Mrs. Farrow, why don't we go upstairs to talk?"Jenna's expression remained cold as she ro

Serena had just arrived at the top floor of Quade Group when she noticed Elena and another secretary whispering together in hushed voices. She approached them curiously. "What are you two gossiping about?"Elena lowered her voice conspiratorially. "We saw Mr. Quade come in this morning looking all radiant. We're guessing he might be seeing someone.""Mr. Quade's in a good mood today?" Serena asked."Yeah, and not the 'closed a big deal' kind of good mood," Elena said with a hushed tone. "It's more like… you know, the 'love's in the air' kind of vibe."Serena suddenly recalled the phone call Wilson had received yesterday. Did something good happen with Desiree? The mere thought left a strange feeling stirring in her chest.Just then, the phone at her desk rang. On the other end came Wilson's smooth, lazy voice. "Ms. Judd, come in."Serena immediately stood up and walked into his office. Inside the spacious room, Wilson was lounging comfortably in his leather chair with his leg

"When did you and Mr. Quade become so close?" Carla asked."These past few weeks, we've been playing tennis and chess together. I realized I actually get along with him quite well. We're practically friends now," Charles said with a grin.Carla was visibly surprised. "With your boring taste in art and those hobbies for retirees? And he's so young. He actually enjoys that?"Wilson chuckled mischievously. "Who says that? Mr. Zeller is so trendy he puts me to shame."Charles burst into laughter. "Hear that? He says I'm trendy!"Carla rolled her eyes. "Mr. Quade's just being polite. Don't get carried away."Charles raised a brow, his tone utterly serious. "I never joke about these things. Mr. Zeller's sense of style is exactly why he managed to marry a young and beautiful lady like you. Isn't that right?"Carla laughed, obviously pleased as she instinctively touched her well-maintained face. "Alright, enough standing around. Mr. Quade, Serena, come and have a seat.""Of course." Wi

Charles chuckled. "I knew it." He held a chess piece between his fingers, a satisfied smirk on his face. You know, my wife and I have been together for years, and our relationship has always been great. People are pretty envious of us."Wilson leaned back lazily, casting him a sideways glance. "Why are you showing off your love life to me now?""As someone who's been through it all, I thought I'd share some relationship advice." Charles adjusted his glasses, looking serious. "To be honest, my wife wasn't always like this. She used to be stubborn, quiet, and very independent. "She didn't come from a family as wealthy as mine, so my family wasn't exactly fond of her. Because of that, she insisted on breaking up with me and even fled overseas to study just to avoid me.""You went after her?" Wilson raised a brow."Of course. I followed her all the way abroad. Guess how long it took her to agree to be with me again?" Charles continued."A year?" Wilson replied."Three months," Char

"You didn't jinx yourself in a past life, so why are you being so hard on yourself?" Wilson asked.Serena remained silent. Maybe she did jinx herself in her past life. If not, then why were her parents gone, and why had she wasted 19 years loving the wrong person?Noticing her silence, Wilson glanced over while waiting for the light to change. The window on her side was rolled down just a crack, and she stared blankly out into the night, her delicate, fair profile glowing faintly under the dim streetlights. There was something fragile yet beautiful about it.Suddenly, a brilliant and colorful burst of fireworks exploded across the night sky. Then, more fireworks appeared, lighting up half the horizon.Serena's eyes brightened. "Why would someone be setting off fireworks? From the direction… it looks like my neighborhood."The light turned green, and Wilson drove forward. "Do you like fireworks?""I used to." Serena lowered the window further, leaning out to watch the dazzling dis

Gary's face darkened as he glared at William. "William, is this how the Quades treat me?"William was casually sipping his coffee. "Gary, there's nothing I can do. I can't even control this rebellious son of mine.""How dare youβ€”" Gary tried to say something but was cut off by William."I'm tired. I'm going to head back now." After the Collinsworth brothers left, Lila returned. She carried a bag with mushroom soup, buns, and milk as she walked in. "Mr. Farrow, you should eat something.""It's okay. I'm not hungry." He had no appetite. His gaze lingered on her before asking, "Where were you last night?""I was at work, Mr. Farrow. You know that the club runs night shifts. I only get off in the morning," Lila explained.Upon hearing that, an unexplainable anger rose in his chest. "Are you still working at the club?""Yes," Lila replied softly."Didn't I tell the manager to give you the money? Now that your mom's surgery fees are covered, why are you still working there?" Justin asked."I…" Lila's eyes darted nervously."Do you really have to degrade yourself like this?" Justin frowned.Lila paused for a moment before saying, "That's my own private matter. Mr. Farrow, you have no business interfering with where I work."Justin let out a cold laugh. "You got the money, and now you're standing tall? Fin

Joseph, Arthur, and Lila were there. His gaze immediately locked onto Lila. "What are you doing here?"Joseph and Arthur exchanged glances. What a friend he was. The first thing he cared about after waking up was Lila? No loyalty to his own friends whatsoever.Lila gave a small, polite smile. "My phone was off earlier. When I turned it back on, I saw multiple missed calls from you. I called back, but Mr. Collinsworth answered."Arthur shrugged. "She asked about you, so I told her what happened. Then she came over."Lila looked a little guilty. "I'm sorry, Mr. Farrow. I was at work yesterday and didn't see your calls. Did you need something?"Did he need something? Not really. He had just left Serena's place last night, feeling unbearably empty, and he needed something or someone to fill the void. So, he thought of her. "Nothing important. It's all good now."Sensing that they had things to discuss, Lila stood up. "I'll step out for a bit."Once she was gone, the hospital room f

Joseph countered, "Starting a business is challenging in the beginning. Just hold on a little longer. Once the company takes off, I'll…""Oh, let me guess. You'll give me a raise and promotion and lead me to the pinnacle of life? Yeah, I'm done buying into your empty promises!" Lauren waved him off. "Alright, I'm here. You can go now."Seeing her step into the elevator, Joseph didn't follow. He only turned around and walked away once the doors closed.Lauren's apartment was an old, rundown building. It was a resettlement unit with four houses sharing a single landing, and the space was tight. As she stepped out, she noticed a man pounding on the door across the hall. He was clearly drunk. She pulled her coat tighter around herself and suddenly regretted not letting Joseph walk her up. Who would've thought she would run into a drunk in the middle of the night? She was a knockout. What if she became a target?"Open up… Open the door!" The man's voice was low and slurred.Lauren su

It started drizzling at some point, and it was almost midnight when Serena reached home with an umbrella. When she was at her door, she saw a black lump on the stairs. Initially, she thought it was garbage, but when the sensor light turned on, she saw that it was Justin.Frowning, she wondered why he was here again."Serena, I'm sorry for disrupting you, but I have a question to ask. After I get an answer, I'll leave." Justin stood up. Although he looked forlorn, he was calm and didn't go crazy right away like the previous times. "What do you want to ask?" Serena asked.Even though Justin wanted to control his emotions, tears welled up in his eyes the moment he opened his mouth. "It's my birthday today, and I opened the email you sent."Taken aback, Serena was confused for a while. After thinking for a few seconds, she realized what it was.Six months ago, she did schedule an email for Justin, and it was timed to be sent on his birthday today. Afterward, she forgot about it

At 6:15 pm, Justin received an email in his private email. His irises shrank after he checked his inbox; it was Serena. After a short moment of stunned silence, he realized that Serena might have scheduled this email to be sent exactly at this timeβ€”because 6:01 pm was when he was born, not a minute earlier. With trembling hands, he opened the email.A video recorded by Serena greeted him, and she looked demure as she faced the camera."Justin, it's your 28th birthday today. Happy birthday. While you're watching this video, do you think that I recorded it today?"Actually, no. This was recorded six months before your birthday…"This was just as Justin expected, so he wasn't surprised at all.In the video, Serena chuckled shyly. When she laughed like that, she had a hint of innocence that could soften anyone's heart.Justin couldn't help but laugh along with her, and she continued, "It's 3:00 am now, and you're still abroad, but I'm missing you suddenly. I remember you said that

Outside, Damian fished out his car keys and climbed into his car. Casually, he tossed the cupcakes to the backseat and sped off in his Maserati. While driving, he turned on the surveillance camera app on his cellphone and scanned his studio and home. Everything was normal, but his instincts told him something was amiss.Today, Serena told him that Zoey's parents had personally apologized to her. Based on his understanding of the Bakers, they would have never visited Serena. There was only one possibilityβ€”they had met Wilson or his men and only came to apologize after being threatened by Wilson.Damian wondered whether Wilson suspected anything. There were no surveillance images on Zoey's cellphone, so maybe Wilson suspected something more to this. The situation would get sticky if Wilson's investigations led to him.He had to get back and take care of it as soon as possible. …The next day, Justin flew back from abroad and headed straight to his office. On the way, he receiv

When Damian walked into the patisserie, the young ladies in the store stole a look at him."Hi, Serena," he greeted."Hey, Damian. What brought you here?""I happen to pass by here, so I decided to drop in." Damian smiled softly, revealing his pearly whites. Next to Serena, Joanna stared at him, smitten. "Serena, what's up with you? All the guys you know are dashing! As they say, good-looking people only hang out with each other. People with ordinary looks like us are left to ourselves, dissing each other."Damian looked at her. "You're rather cute, too. Your eyes are big, like a deer's.""Really?" Joanna was so happy that her eyes were shimmering brightly.Receiving a compliment from a dashing man was enough to keep her happy for the entire day. Shy but excited, Joanna scurried into a corner.Serena turned to Damian. "Do you like desserts as well? Which flavor do you prefer? I can recommend something to you.""Strawberry flavor, I guess. Serena remained in the same spot as she watched Gwen leaving from the back, a mix of emotions in her chest. Just then, a car honked suddenly behind her.Turning around, she saw Wilson's Cullinan parked at the side of the road, and the driver seat window rolled down. Wilson held a cigarette between his fingers as his arm was lazily propped against the side of the window. His profile in the night light was so stunning that he appeared unreal.Serena walked over to him slowly. "Why are you here?""I'm here to pick you up. What are you looking at? You look so engrossed.""Nothing. I was chatting with Gwen earlier." Slipping into his car, she asked, "She said that she's resigning soon. Is that true?""She did bring this up today, and she can leave once the handover is completed. That will take a little more than two weeks.""Have you found a new personal assistant?""No. Why don't you take over?""Nope. It's more carefree to be my own boss," Serena rejected flatly.Wilson chuckle
