Chapter 158

Author: Arlo Drake
"Mr. Quade," Serena said, hurrying to catch up. Her eyes searched his face. "Are you upset?"

"What makes you think I'm upset?" Wilson countered.

"It's… obvious," Serena replied.

Wilson was silent for a moment. Then, he stopped walking and turned to face her, his gaze intense. "Serena, did you invite me out today to express your gratitude, or was it a setup?"

Serena's expression turned sheepish. "You saw through it?"

She said apologetically, "Aaron is Laurie's boyfriend, and she's very important to me. I wanted to help her, so I used this as an excuse. I'm sorry."

"If you needed my help, you could've just asked me directly. Why lie to me?" Wilson asked.

"Huh?" Serena was caught off guard. "But we're not that close. You're my boss. It wouldn't be appropriate to just ask you to meet with Aaron and help him out."

Great. They had kissed before, yet all he got in return was they were not that close. She certainly had a way of getting under his skin.

Serena paused, then asked tenta

"Say something, Justin," Mollie urged. "Are you even listening?""So what?" Justin replied."What?" Mollie was taken aback."Why are you telling me this?" Justin said. Mollie grew anxious. "Justin, why are you being so passive? Didn't you practically beg her to come back? Are you just going to give up that easily? Act like a man and win her back from Wilson!"Justin's voice turned cold. "I don't need you to remind me. She'll come back to me. But I'm curious. When did you become such a champion of my relationship with Serena?"Mollie felt a twinge of guilt. "Can't I support true love?" she offered weakly. "Besides, Serena is still better than Candice. I'd much rather have her as my sister-in-law."More importantly, if Serena got back with Justin, she would have a chance with Wilson. Mollie was the eldest daughter of the Farrow family, and no matter how one looked at it, she was a much more suitable match for him. "This is my business. Stay out of it." Justin then ended the cal

"I already said I'm sorry," Serena said, a slight pout on her lips."Are you giving me the cold shoulder now?" Wilson asked sternly."I wouldn't dare," Serena replied, wiping her fingers with a sanitizing wipe. Her delicate features were tinged with a hint of annoyance.Wilson studied her for a moment, then sighed. "Never mind. You're beautiful. You can ignore me if you want.""Okay…" Serena replied, a little confused. He, however, was the one who relented. "Come with me when you're finished eating."Wilson stood up and walked toward the terrace.Serena followed. A short climb led them to a small observation deck. Leaning against the railing, Serena gazed at the city sprawling below. The streets shimmered like ribbons of light, and the skyscrapers glittered, creating a breathtaking panorama.Wilson pointed to a distinctive high-rise building in the distance. "See that? That's the Farrow Corporation headquarters.""Yeah." She would recognize it anywhere, even if it were reduc

Serena's wrist was as slender and delicate as porcelain, and the watch looked good on her. Wilson clicked his tongue and mused, "Look at that. Your wrist is meant for watches.""Mr. Quade, you shouldn't have given me such an expensive watch…" Serena began."I've been wanting to give it to you but never got around to it. I think we've grown closer, so would you do me a favor and please wear the watch, Serena?" Wilson asked. The watch was one of a pair. Jacob had commissioned the his-and-hers watches as a birthday gift to Wilson. Wilson kept the "his" watch and had been wanting to give the "hers" watch to Serena for a while.Serena felt his burning gaze on her and made to withdraw her hand, but Wilson held it tightly. He even tugged her firmly toward him. She lost her footing and staggered forward, nearly colliding with his chest. He gazed down at her. She breathed in his crisp, pine scent and felt her heart skip several beats. "Mr. Quade, what are you doing?""Don't worry, I won't

That night, Serena dreamed of Wilson's soft, tender gaze pulling her in like a whirlpool. She dreamed of being in his arms as he kissed her. The scene then switched to them being in bed. Wilson pinned her down and moved with a panther-like grace as he claimed her. She had her arms wrapped around his neck as she tried to keep up with him, her breathing as labored as that of a fish out of water. The strange and wild dreams plagued her the entire night.Serena's head was heavy when she woke up the next day. She arrived at work with an iced coffee in hand, only to see Wilson grinning widely at her as he leaned against her desk. "Good morning, Ms. Judd."She went still and asked, "What are you doing here?""I'm waiting for someone.""Who?""You, of course." He walked over to her and leaned close as he said, "I was worried you might be so spooked after last night that you'd catch a midnight train out of the city. I wanted to wait and see if you'd show up at work so I could ease my co

Desiree snorted and stared at the picture of Serena on her screen as if she could bore a hole through it. She had to strike soon. She had never lost out on anything she wanted before, even men. She would not let anyone steal what was hers! After she calmed down, she called the private investigator and said, "Find out who Serena's friends and family are and give me the information once you've sorted it out."Wilson might be untouchable, but Serena was not.…Serena tagged along with Wilson to a hotel for a meeting with his clients. It was already 10:00 pm when the meeting ended. After bidding the business partners goodbye, Wilson headed toward the basement carpark with Serena. They were about to get in the car when they heard what sounded like a scuffle nearby. A woman's voice cut through the air as she cursed aloud, and Serena thought it sounded familiar."Just a moment," she said as she hurried toward the noise and saw a sleazy man tugging on a woman's arm. Serena looked distressed on the way home. Noticing this, Wilson asked, "Are you worried about Lauren?""Yes… I can't help but think it's odd," Serena began. "Aaron didn't smell like alcohol at all, yet Lauren looked like she had drunk her weight in it. It just feels as if he doesn't care about her as much as he wants us to think.""If you're curious about what he's truly like, I could look into him for you," Wilson offered.Serena's eyes lit up at the suggestion, but she felt bad about it. "Only if it's not too much trouble."Wilson sputtered. "It'll only take a word, Ms. Judd."To make a point, he dialed a number on his phone and gave the person on the other line brief instructions to look into Aaron. When the person on the other line acceded, Serena heaved a breath of relief. The Bentley sped down the road and pulled up outside Serena's apartment. She was about to get out of the car when Wilson's phone rang. He put the call through, and his face darkened when he heard what the

Gary was in a fit of panic as he asked, "Who kidnapped Desiree? Have you looked into it? I'll have them drawn and quartered!"Wilson answered, "It was Yvonne, my brother's ex-wife.""Your family's behind this?" A stormy look flashed in Gary's eyes as he growled, "You'd better make things right, Wilson!"He had only just said this when Wilson's phone rang. Upon seeing Yvonne's name on the screen, Wilson picked up and put the call on speaker. "What do you want?""Where the hell is Shawn? Have you made the arrangements yet, Wilson? I'm warning you—you'll never see Desiree again if you don't hand Shawn over!" Yvonne threatened.Wilson pointed out, "Shawn's in Westeros right now, Yvonne. I could put him on a rocket and it wouldn't be fast enough to get him to you. Have you missed him so much that your brain cells rotted?""Shut up! I don't care what you have to do, but I want you to hand Shawn over to my men by today. I'll give Desiree back to you after I send Shawn abroad!" Yvonne sa

Yvonne waited for what felt like ages before she finally got a text from Wilson. He had sent her a video of Shawn being escorted into the Quade's private jet. Only his side profile was visible, and he was dressed shabbily. He'd lost some weight, and he hadn't shaved, either. He looked like a shell of his former self.Yvonne's heart nearly broke when she saw the video. "It hasn't been that long since he went to Westeros… How did he lose so much weight?"He must have suffered a lot. The thought of this renewed Yvonne's rage, and she shot Desiree a menacing look.Desiree, still bound to the chair, eyed Yvonne nervously. "What?""You'd better pray that Wilson shows up with Shawn in time to save you before I make him pay for what he did!" Yvonne seethed. "He hurt my son, and I won't hesitate to hurt his beloved just to get back at him!"Desiree's brows furrowed. "I honestly think you've got it all wrong. Wilson and I are friends, but he doesn't love me. You kidnapped the wrong person.

Serena remembered now. Marcus was born out of David's second marriage.Marcus wheeled the birthday cake toward David. He stopped beside David and grinned. "Happy birthday, Dad! May you have a long and healthy life ahead of you!""Looks like you've pulled yourself together, Marcus," David praised, smiling. He'd never smiled like that when Jacob was around.David paid no mind to Jacob's darkened expression as he pulled Marcus closer and launched into introductions. "Everyone, this is Marcus. He's been majoring in finance abroad and flew home especially for my birthday today!"A few guests at the table recognized Marcus. "Goodness, it's Marcus! I haven't seen him in years! He sure looks different now.""Yes, he looks a lot like a younger Mr. David."Jacob lifted his gaze. "Dad, why didn't you tell me Marcus was coming home today?"David's smile slipped. "You should have known he was coming home, Jacob. You're the older brother, so don't go blaming me for not keeping you up to date

A loud cough suddenly sounded behind Jacob and the others. David was making his way down the stairs with Natasha's help."Mr. Smith," Wilson greeted.A shadow fell over David's face. "Wilson, I wasn't expecting you to come.""It's your birthday today, Mr. Smith. It's only right that I come over and celebrate with you out of respect, wouldn't you say?" Wilson said congenially. He snaked an arm around Serena's shoulders as he approached David. "Mr. Smith, allow me to introduce my girlfriend, Serena Judd."David made a noise of approval. "She's got a decent face and build, that much I'll say. You got lucky, Wilson.""Oh, my luck with the ladies is nothing compared to yours, Mr. Smith." Wilson grinned.Beside David, Natasha looked a little uneasy. She clutched David's arm and asked, "Would you like to sit, Mr. Smith?""Bring me to the couch so I may catch my breath."Natasha did as she was told and helped David to the couch, whereupon they sat.Jacob and Wilson sauntered to one si

Serena wished she could sew Wilson's mouth shut. He helped her put on her clothes and said, "We're going to the Smith residence tonight. It's Jacob's father's birthday."Serena considered her plans for the day. The patisserie was doing all right recently, and she had nothing urgent to take care of. As such, she agreed to be Wilson's plus-one.…Serena and Wilson arrived downstairs to find that Elsa had already prepared a meal for them. Under Elsa's curious and meaningful gaze, Serena finished her food and headed out with Wilson. They dropped by an upscale women's boutique. Serena was about to leave after picking out a dress when Wilson grabbed her wrist. "You may as well pick out a few more outfits now that we're here. With that killer figure of yours, you'll look good in anything."It was still early, so Serena decided to stay and shop a little while longer. It would have been foolish of her to decline Wilson's generous offer of new clothes. She tried on a dozen outfits, and Wils

Waking up late the next day, Serena's eyes slowly blinked open, her thoughts still hazy and unfocused. She stared at the blackout curtains that had been drawn over the window, and the memories from last night flashed through her mind.As the hand on her side gently shifted, a voice rumbled, "Are you up?"Serena hummed in response, her throat a little dry. Last night had been wild; she'd behaved nothing like her usual self. She blushed slightly at the thought.Wilson gently pinched the soft flesh of her waist and kissed her. "Lie in for a bit."With that, he lifted the blanket and got out of bed. The soft glow of the bedside lamp illuminated the room a second later, and he handed Serena a glass of water. "To quench your thirst."Wilson's tone was warm and mild, but the way his alluring eyes fixed on Serena turned his sentence into a double entendre. Diffident, she took the glass from him and had a few gulps of water.Wilson then set the glass down and began putting on his clothes.

Wilson brought Serena back to his villa.Serena was greeted by the feast on the table when she entered the door and noted her favorite dishes among the food. Wilson explained, "When I came home earlier, I told Elsa to make dinner. We'll be eating here tonight."Serena nodded. She took a seat at the table, only to see Elsa Rosenburg bustling around to tend to her needs. She served Serena soup, brought her a wine glass, and even warmly asked Serena if she could have cold drinks.Wilson narrowed his eyes from across the table. "Elsa, if you'd like to take a look at my girlfriend, you may do so openly without buzzing around her like a bee."An awkward chuckle escaped Elsa. Oh, well, so much for being subtle. But could Wilson blame her? He'd only ever brought men home, and this was the first time he'd brought a woman over—and she was his girlfriend, no less!It was a rare sight for Elsa, indeed. Before this, she thought Wilson and Jacob were dating.Elsa stared at Serena for a moment,

Damian's eyes darkened. He strode over to Wilson. "Mr. Quade."Wilson appraised him from head to toe. "What is your purpose of getting close to Serena?"Damian looked baffled. "I've known Serena for years, and we've always been on good terms. What do you mean by that question, Mr. Quade?""The next time you act dumb and naïve, try to be more convincing. Who are you trying to fool when you can't even keep the scheming look out of your eyes?" Wilson drawled.Damian froze, then flashed Wilson a smile. "I don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Quade. Serena may be your girlfriend, but she has the freedom to be friends with whomever she wants."Wilson took a drag of his cigarette. "You sabotaged the security camera at Serena's place previously, didn't you?"Damian's smile vanished.Contempt gleamed in Wilson's narrowed eyes as he added, "Stay in line if you don't want Serena to find out just how despicable you are. I don't want to see you anywhere near Serena after this."With a

Wilson leaned into his seat and waved at Jillian through the screen as he said, "How is that you look younger since the last time we met, Madam Gallagher? And you look so fabulous and festive in that jacket, too. How will anyone tell you and an 18-year-old young woman apart?""You and your nonsense." Jillian laughed at the compliments. She gave him a meaningful look. "Do you know who got me this jacket?""Your old sweetheart?""Piss off!" Jillian snapped. "Serena got me the jacket."Surprise flickered in Wilson's eyes. He chuckled and said, "My mistake. So, it was my sweetheart who got you the jacket. How nice and generous of her; she is far better than your granddaughter. Did you reward her?""Reward her all you like when you get home." Jillian held up her phone and scoffed. "You should know you're lucky to have tricked a lovely young lady like her into falling for you."Trevor was confused. "Wait, are you familiar with Serena, too?""Yes. Our paths crossed somehow, and we beca

"Did you come to talk to me about the shop?" Jillian waved her hand dismissively. "I already told you, you get to call the shots when it comes to the patisserie. You don't have to report back to me on every little thing. Just give me my share of the profits every year."Serena said warmly, "I didn't come to talk to you about work. I just wanted to see you."Jillian went still. "What's there to see? I'm just a little old lady, and we aren't even close.""You did me a huge favor, Madam Gallagher. Visiting you is part for the course." Serena produced the gift bag and said, "I went shopping today and saw this. I thought it'd suit you and took the liberty of getting it for you. Try it on."Jillian glanced at the item in the gift bag. The style and color were to her liking, indeed. "I appreciate the gift. Leave it there.""Perhaps you should try it on first," Serena suggested, taking out the jacket and holding it up. She gently tugged on Jillian's arm and prompted, "Come on, Madam Galla

Jenna narrowed her eyes at Willow. "Your last name is Quade? What's your relationship with Wilson Quade?""He's my older cousin," Willow answered.Jenna's expression turned stormy when she heard this. She despised the Quade family. At that moment, Serena returned with the retail assistant. She had paid for Jillian's present and was ready to leave when Willow clutched her arm. "Help me pick something out."Serena nodded and began looking around the boutique with Willow.Jenna stared daggers at the two young ladies, her mood growing fouler by the second. She said scathingly, "They say birds of a feather flock together. I bet Willow is just as bad as Serena. Did you smell the smoke on her when she walked past us earlier? She must have been smoking outside before she entered the boutique!"Kelly looked offended. "Smoking doesn't mean anything. I was a smoker when I was young, too." She used to be a photographer and picked up smoking due to the stressful nature of her job. She only qu
