Chloe knocked on our door a full hour early. This was a much needed escape, she said. The moment she got in, she kicked her shoes off and waddled into the kitchen in search of something to eat.

She found Chloe pulling out a tray of grilled chicken from the oven- another surprise, because Chloe avoided cooking more than anything else and grabbed a drumstick. She closed her eyes as she chewed.

“Oh my God, this is so good!" She tore off more of the skin excitedly and opened her eyes to look at us. “At this rate, I'm going to be an elephant by the time this baby comes! I never seem to be able to stop eating!"

I laughed, turning the pasta on the stove with one hand and holding the lid of the pot with the other.

“You're not going to be an elephant, Chloe. You're gorgeous no matter how much you eat or how much weight you put on."

“True." Chloe agreed, pulling off the glove she'd worn to take the hot tray out of the oven. “Plus, you've earned the right to eat as you want, girl. You've got an

Morning came quickly. Light filtered through the curtains and into the room, causing me to blink my eyes open. I was disoriented for a moment, then yesterday's events came back to me in a rush. The verdict, the celebratory lunch at that ridiculously expensive restaurant, Lilian's impromptu sleepover. All in all, yesterday was a good day. I just needed to keep reminding myself that I'd won.Chloe was already up, her side of the bed neatly made. I stretched and yawned loudly. My muscles were protesting at Chloe's too soft mattress. I kept telling that girl that she needed a new bed, but she just wouldn't listen. I stretched my hand to reach for my phone. Jordan’s last message glowed on the screen.6 tonight?I responded with a quick ‘sure’. I smiled at the thought of him and was about to get out of bed when the door came flying open.“Rise and shine, sleeping beauty,” Chloe called, pushing the door wider with her hip with two steaming mugs of coffee in hand.“Have I told you how much I

  • To Love Again   Chapter 69

It was almost midnight when Jordan turned the lock in the door and we stumbled in. Somehow, we'd gone from hot chocolate to wine, and had finished an entire bottle.I wasn't drunk, but I'd had just enough to drink that I staggered as we walked up the stairs. Jordan placed his hand on the small of my back to steady me. I still didn't understand how he wasn't drunk. He'd drunk more than half of that bottle! Now that I thought of it, I didn't think I'd ever seen the man drunk.Inside Jordan's room, I dropped unceremoniously in the middle of the bed. The last thing I remembered before drifting off to sleep was Jordan pulling off my shoes and tucking a blanket around me.The first thing I noticed as my eyes shot open was that it wasn't quite morning yet. The day was still dark and what little light was in the room came from the bedside lamp. The second thing I noticed was the arm draped over my waist, warm and heavy. Jordan's arm. I smiled and snuggled closer into his embrace. We stayed

I went straight to Jordan's office from this reception. It wasn't like Jordan to send for me through someone else. Usually, he would either put a call through to my office or come to me by himself. He'd said once before that I answered directly to him, not to anyone else, so when I walk in to a message from the receptionist to report to his office, I know it's urgent.I turned the knob of his office, half expecting to find all major stakeholders in Kingston Enterprise waiting for me in there, but the office was surprisingly empty except for Jordan on his throne-like chair. He raised his eyes when I entered the office. He looked mildly surprised. “Hey. You're earlier than I expected."“Thanks to you. You sent Dane."“Yea, but I wasn't expecting you for another hour."I nodded, and stood across from him. I wasn't exactly in the mood for small talk.“Mary said you wanted me in your office, and that it was urgent?"“Yes.” He closed his laptop, and gestured towards a seat opposite him. "P

I couldn't make up my mind. A whole week had passed since that morning in Jordan's office, and I still couldn't make up my mind on whether I wanted to move up at Kingston or step out and start from scratch.Jordan had insisted on leaving me to make the decision by myself. He didn't want to influence it because this was something I had to do on my own. Chloe seemed to be on the same page as him. All she seemed able to say was that I would have to follow my heart. But how could I follow my heart when I didn't even know what it was saying?Chloe still hadn't made up with Caleb. I could see in her eyes how much the break was hurting her, but somehow she never seemed willing to talk about it. He was hurting too, Jordan told me. He’d withdrawn into his shell, drinking more, and not talking much.I mentioned to Chloe once that this was self sabotage. There was no reason for this break. At least, none that I could see, so what was the need to hurt them both like this? She stopped talking to h

“Get off me.” I said coldly.I felt Jordan stiffen on top of me, but he tried to play it cool. “What's the problem, Marissa?" There was caution laced in his voice.“I said, get off me." I placed both hands on his shoulders and pushed. He rolled off me and sat up in bed, resting against the headboard. I rose to my feet and began throwing my clothes on. He watched me briefly and then sighed briefly before speaking.“What is the problem, Marissa?" He repeated.I worked the buttons on my shirt with shaky hands, not giving him an answer.“I'm talking to you, Marissa." The calmness in his voice didn't dwindle.I pulled on my pants, still not responding. Stray tears were threatening to fall from my eyes, and I struggled to keep them in check. I tried to fit the pant button into its hole, and cursed loudly when my hands wouldn't stop shaking.“For fuck's sake, Marissa, answer me! Don't pretend that you can't hear me and don't treat me like some retard!" He said, getting out of bed and coming

I watched as the veins popped on Jordan's forehead and he said the words, “I’m going to kill the bastard”I didn't doubt even for a minute that he could, but truth was, I didn't need anybody killing Bill for me. I had already lived through that phase of my life and Bill had already been made to suffer for all of his crimes.“No, you're not,” I said in a steady voice that surprised even me, “because he's already dead.”His eyes shot up to mine."I'll get to that soon. Just… Bill used to call me Marie in that annoyingly gruff voice of his. Whenever he would try to touch me, he would say some disgusting stuff like ‘come to me, my Marie'. God, I hated him so much.”"So that's why you hate to be called that.” He said in realization.I nodded. “It just… it makes me feel dirty. Like no matter what I do, I could never wash his filth off me.”"Did you tell your mother?” He wanted to know.I snorted. “Elizabeth only knows what Elizabeth wants to know."“What does that mean?"“She played blind.

  • To Love Again   Chapter 74

It felt like I was walking on a cloud! For days after, I went about my business with springy feet. Jordan loved me. I was worthy of love. And this time, it wasn't the sort of love that demanded continuously and took from you. It was the sort of love that cared for you, showed up even when you didn't ask, and expected nothing in return.Chloe had been right after all. With Anthony, the signs had been there from the start. With Jordan however, it was just beautiful… blissful.I hadn't realized how much I wanted this but now, sitting smack in the middle of it all, there's nothing more that I could have asked for.“You're daydreaming again, Rissa." Chloe said, as she eased into a chair with her laptop in one hand and a coke in the other.“No, I'm not." I said, with a smile playing on my lips. I most certainly was.“Care to tell me what it's about?"I shook my head and smiled. With all that was going on with Caleb and her. I didn't think that now was the time to be telling her about my con

I drove my black sedan into the garage of the Jenkins home with Chloe at my side. She drummed her fingers on her laps nervously and took deep breaths as I turned off the ignition.“He's not going to bite you, Chloe." I said, turning to look at her.“No, he's not, but he's going to be real mad, and I can't even blame him."I took her hand in mine. “Well, you can't turn back now."“No, I can't." She took another deep breath and unfastened her seatbelt. We walked hand in hand to the front door, and she knocked. When Sam pulled the door open, I saw his eyes register mild surprise. He looked between Chloe and me and held the door wider for us to come in. I stepped in, but Chloe remained on the porch.“Hi, Dad.”He kept his eyes on hers and nodded. "Come on in, Chloe." He said, opening the door even wider. She finally came in. I was already seated and she took the space next to me. Sam sat across from us and placed both hands on thighs. Chloe made more noise than a hurricane as she rushed down the stairs with her bag in one hand and her six inch tall shoes in the other. For someone who was already tall, it was interesting how she never wore anything other than heels.“I’m late. I’m late. I’m so damn late,” she muttered as she skidded into the kitchen.I was leaning against the counter, sipping coffee and reading a recipe draft on my tablet. She glanced at me, then did a double-take.“You’re dressed.”“I am.” I said with a small smile. She narrowed her eyes at me as she shoved her arm into the sleeve of her coat. “That's suspicious. Didn't you say y'all found a replacement and you don't have to go to work anymore? What are you going to do?"I laughed. Suspicious indeed. "I'm not going to work.”"Then where?” Obviously impatient, but not willing to leave without knowing where I was going."I'm meeting Layla.”Her eyes bulged. "Layla as in Layla Freeman? Same Layla that we ran into a couple nights ago?”"Same same.” I r

Chapter 81Chloe and Caleb were already seated at a table when we walked into the restaurant. It buzzed with life and I smiled at the sight. This was the same restaurant where I'd first seen Jordan. It almost felt like it had been ages since that day when Chloe and I sat across from each other, and I stepped out to take my mother's call. The scowl that had been on my face when I came back in after that encounter with Jordan outside still made me laugh till date. The fact that he'd actually asked me to ‘look after myself'. Oh, the nerve of the man! I chuckled and glanced at Jordan. I wondered if he remembered too. We walked over to the table where Chloe and Caleb sat, already sipping from the cocktails in front of us.Chloe saw us first. She hurried to her feet and pulled me in for a hug. She hugged Jordan next. Caleb had a big smile plastered on his face as he rose to hug me too. God, had we all missed that smile. It is true what they say. Being with the person that you love makes a

Elizabeth blinked as Jordan strolled with a quiet authority towards us. Even she seemed taken aback by his question.“I asked you a question, Elizabeth Colton. How much do you want?”She quickly collected herself and put on an indifferent air. "Well, she owes me a whole lot.”"I do not!” I said, gritting my teeth. What did she mean I owed her a lot? God, the woman never could pass up on an opportunity to milk me.Jordan raised his brows at her. His gaze didn't waver. “I asked you a question. How much?"Couldn't he see that I was seething? Why was he asking how much she wanted? She shrugged. “100,000."My jaw dropped. 100,000 dollars?"You freaking thief!” I shrieked, but neither of them seemed to be listening to meJordan slipped a hand into his breast pocket and took out a checkbook while Elizabeth looked on gleefully. I looked in stunned silence as he wrote calmly and deliberately on a single page, tore it out, and held it out to my mother. I moved fast. Just as she was about to tak

I dropped my resignation with a two week notice which meant that even though I'd resigned, I was still working until we could find a replacement for Jordan's assistant. We'd interviewed a couple people but none of them seemed suitable for the role.Meanwhile, I spent all of my free time searching desperately for a place to set up the business. I'd decided to go a step further in my plans. I wasn't just going to be catering to clients. I would make the space into a cozy bakery of some sorts. Cupcakes, pastries, scones, and if I could manage it, perhaps coffee.I knew it was a lot to aim for, but a certain someone had taught me to never let my mind limit me. If I put my heart to it, then I could most certainly do it. Nancy. Now, the next step was finding a good space that wouldn't cost too much. I was on a budget after all.I found the place on a Friday evening. I’d already seen three other options that day that made me want to set something on fire, and I had no doubts that even the re

Jordan's expression was unreadable. He took a step back, and shoved both hands in his pockets.“Erm… congratulations.I cocked my head at him. I'd been expecting better. “Thank you." I said, my voice laced with uncertainty. He nodded and remained quiet.“Is there a problem, Jordan?" I asked.“No." He said, shaking his head. He rocked back and forth on his heels, his hands still in his pockets.“Well?" I snapped, suddenly impatient. “If there's something you'd like to say to me, just say it."He ran a hand through his dark hair, and moved to sit at the edge of his desk. "I don't have a problem with you leaving Kingston, Marissa. If anything, I support your decisions. You know that.”"Then what's the problem?”"I just want to be sure that you've thought this through. Marissa, starting a business is no joke. It would demand—”"I've thought it through.” I said, cutting him off.“Marissa, I —”"What is this, Jordan!? I don't get it. A little over a week ago, you sat in that throne-like cha

  • To Love Again   Chapter 77

Chloe and I sat cross-legged in the middle of her bed, bent over a stack of papers, some crumpled, some straightened, as we discussed names between ourselves. Chloe was elated when I told her that I had finally decided to start the catering business we'd been talking so much about. When I asked for her help in picking out a name, drafting a proposal, and doing all of the basics that starting a business would require, Chloe jumped on it. It was what she did for a living anyway so it only made sense that she would handle this for me.I tried and failed to convince her to let me pay for her services, and insisted that this didn't count as work. We were just having fun and making good use of our hands and brains while at it.There were springs in her feet that showed how excited she was for me. It wasn't that I had expected any less, It was in fact that her infectious joy was a reminder that despite the brief lull that we'd had when Chloe suddenly disappeared into her shell, my best frien

I dropped her off outside Caleb's house.“You want me to come in with you?" I asked as she fidgeted with the door handle.“No. I think I should do this alone. But I think you should wait for a bit. Just in case, you know.”I didn't think that Caleb would turn her out on her face, but I nodded and she got out. I waited to see him open the door. From where I was, I could see the dark stubble on his face. He looked tired. I couldn't hear them, but Chloe said something to him, and he held the door open. I drove off with a contented smile on my face. I had no doubts that they would fix things before Chloe came back home.I pulled to a stop outside the grocery store. Chloe and I had been talking about getting some supplies, but we'd both been too busy recently, and so now that I had some free time on my hands I thought I would pick up what we needed. The grocery store hummed with its usual afternoon bustle. There were mothers with carts full of screaming toddlers. There was an elderly coupl
