I already knew as I got up from crouching in front of Farah, to answer the door.
His minty scent had filled my nose before he even knocked, I opened the door slowly and stopped it with my foot so that less than my body width was open, as my voice rang out in an accusatory tone, “Rowan… “
His face looked puzzled and annoyed, probably because I called him by his full name. As a child I could never say his name properly, so I only ever called him ‘Ro.’ He always said it sounded so formal and weird to hear me speak his full name, a little taste of what I endured downstairs if you ask me. I was still standing in the doorway, not having fully opened it when he relaxed his stance, bringing his hand up in front of his chest, holding a strawberry muffin.
“I didn’t know…” was all he said.
Did he really think he could bribe me? Of course he did, because he knows me a little too well. I tried not to get lost in his eyes as he slowly handed me the muffin, I wanted nothing more than to be back in that clearing with him, not a care in the world. Farah wasn't the only one freaked out by Theo's news, she just wasn't use to terrifying things being dropped on her like I was.
“How are you two holding up?” His voice was concerned for me, but he had no clue what was behind the door.
“How do you think...” I trailed off, swinging the door open and revealing a cocooned Farah. She looked utterly lost, her bright blue eyes even seemed dull sitting with the blanket wrapped around her and staring off into space.
“I think you two need some fresh air… let’s go sit in the garden?” he asked peering at Farah to see if she would agree, but she didn't move, then glancing back at me, “After you change.”
“Oh I see," I raised my eyebrow at him and crossed my arms, "you’re not up here as Ro, you’re up here as Beta.” He rolled his eyes as me as I turned around and slipped into the bathroom, dragging a dress with me.
I emerged in less then a minute with a cute, modest dress that was light blue, and had sleeves much like Farah’s, tapering out at the waist, but above all – it covered my knees. He roamed my outfit with a look of amusement on his face until he reached my face, looking back at him with a sarcastic smirk.
“Does this please the Beta?” I tried to use my best submissive voice as I curtsied and bowed my head.
“Shut up,” he scoffed, “let’s go.”
I helped Farah emerge from her cocoon and we walked behind him all the way to the gardens. There was a bench just in front of the water fountain that we stopped to sit at, Farah in the middle. The trickling water was peaceful to watch, it distracted me if even for a few minutes from the chaos that was going on around me.
I could feel Ro’s vision on me the whole time, his light brown eyes roaming my face, and his worries drowning out even Farah's. How he could be so cool under pressure was surely a Beta thing, just like how he probably knew more than he was letting on. He didn't flinch at all when Theo told us that the Timber pack was arriving, and the moment kept replaying in my head, I hated having things kept from me. I was constantly the last to know, still holding all the responsibilities of a ranking member with none of the inside knowledge. We sat on that bench for probably 15 minutes before I couldn’t take the silence anymore.
“What DO you know Ro?” I said in a pretty accusing tone.
“I can’t… I won’t go to the carnival this year.” Farah squeaked out. Her voice surprised me, and I looked at her, wiping the scowl from my face as her blue eyes looked at me, desperate for solace. I knew what she was thinking, but she had looked forward to meeting her mate her whole life, that’s all she ever talked about.
“The carnival is the best place to be able to find your – “
“I know. I can’t risk it being one of… them,” she interrupted me.
“Maybe it’s just rumours, maybe they aren’t actually –“
“They are,” Ro cut me off, “they are that bad Avi, and I don’t think you should attend either, but that’s not my choice.”
“No….it’s not Ro...” I started.
‘Exactly, he’s not keeping us from finding our mate.’
‘Echo, beautiful timing as usual – shut up!’
“You heard Theo, I’m sure that’s what he wants to talk to me about later. Even IF I find my mate before the carnival,” I paused, feeling his eyes burn into me, “I have a duty as the Alpha’s sister to keep up appearances.”
Ro just looked agitated as his forehead scrunched, he didn’t like it, but he knew that I was right. There were always certain things expected of me and his wishes, or mine, didn’t matter much when it was for the benefit of the pack.
I glanced back at Farah who looked like she was at war with herself, she wanted her mate, and she wanted him bad. I’m sure her wolf Amber was arguing with her, not wanting to sit by and miss opportunities to find her mate. I reached over and grabbed her hand gently in mine, giving it a light squeeze so she glanced up at me.
“Think about it, ok Farah? I can’t wait any longer so I’m going to see Theo, but I’ll swing by your room when I’m done, and we can go grab dinner.” I gave her and Ro a slight smile and left. I would help cheer her up later, but first I needed to get this looming chat with Theo over with.
Theo’s office was in the basement, so I headed inside and around the winding stairs that would take me there. Halfway down I could tell that Theo’s office was open slightly, I stopped and debated just coming back, but their whispers were too inviting, and it sounded like mom…
“You can’t ask that of her…” I could hear my mom whisper in distress.“He certainly can, she has always been a part of this family, and that’s what's expected of her role, blood or not Willa.” That stern tone had to come from my dad, Gabriel.“Please Theo,” she begged, “she deserves her mate, wherever and whenever they find each other.”The room grew hushed, I could feel their tensions from where I stood and Echo was pacing at their words, ready to rip into anyone that threatened our ability to find our mate. I pushed her to the back of my mind and opened the door, calling out as if I had just sprung down the stairs and burst into his office without a second thought.“Hey Theo!” I faked surprise when I seen both mom and dad starring back at me, “Mom… are you ok?”“Yes sweetie, and we were just leaving” she barely made it out of the room before breaking into a sob as she scurried upstairs.“Much better,” my dad noted, nodding to my dress. His voice
I raised an eyebrow at him, desperate for him to elaborate.“After you shifted on your 16th birthday for the first time.” He paused for effect I’m sure, but I tried to let that sink in for a minute, it would make sense for it to be timed around when Echo appeared.“Your wolf gets a lot more… prominent after that, and sometimes they can sense things.” His voice was cautious, I was his sister but we were also discussing his best friend, “But I’ll tell ya Avi, I haven’t seen Rowan faulter in his affection for you once, I’m glad you’re birthday coincides with the carnival because if you both could find your true mates, that would make this a whole lot easier…. And leads me to the real reason I asked to talk with you in the first place.”So Theo didn’t think we were mates either, but he had a point, if both of us could find our true mates in the next few days it would makes things so much easier and seamless, I sure wouldn’t have so much guilt over things eve
I left Theo’s office feeling confused. Was I happy, or upset? I was neutral. I didn’t know what to think and that left me in the middle, at least I wouldn’t have to make up my mind right away, there would be time to decide the fate of the rest of my life.I walked upstairs realizing how drained I was, and I couldn’t escape to recharge where I normally did, not that I would want to right now anyways. Knowing Ro, he would be waiting out there for me even now, ready, and willing to just exist beside me. There were always moments with him, ones I could tell he wanted to push the subject but was waiting on me, he would slowly approach a boundary without daring to cross it. Slowly stroking his fingers through my hair and allowing his hand to travel down my arm, stopping himself from venturing lower. Resting his head on mine as he brought me in for a hug, but never daring to plant his lips on me in any fashion.I decided that a nap was the next best thing, I glanced at the cloc
We pulled up to a decent sized mall and wasted no time heading in. I tried to focus on just being out with Farah instead of letting my mind drift, as she pulled me in and out of several shops making me try on countless dresses and shoes to match. We eventually settled on a few dresses that resembled the ones we were already wearing, and made our way onto the formal half of the mall.I knew Theo had picked my outfit for the first night of the carnival, so I settled on a black, slim fitting dress, with long sleeves and a deep V down my back, that would be perfect if my presence was required the second night of the carnival. I wasn’t too comfortable with it, it was showing a lot more skin than I was use to, but Farah said it hugged me in all the right places, and if she approved than so would everyone else.We walked further into the mall and skipped a few shops until there it was, the perfect dress!I pulled Farah into the shop after spotting an emerald green dress t
I turned on my heels, spinning to meet the identity of the man behind us.“For fuck sakes Ro!” I screamed, we came out of the mall too quickly to register his scent and he seemed to get some kind of enjoyment from my reaction. He waited there on purpose for us to come out, now smiling slyly at me while raising an eyebrow.“Tsk tsk tsk Avi, is that a mouth fit for an Alpha’s sister? What would your mother say?” His eyes met my own, and I tried my hardest not to get lost in them, as he tried scolding me playfully, and the only emotion I wanted him to feel right now was my annoyance.“My mother would say Betas shouldn’t hide in the shadows, how psychotic!” I glared at him, now more pissed off from the shock than annoyed, “Betas!” I rolled my eyes.“Well Theo wants you home,” he smiled cockily, “I’m here to make sure it’s without incident.”Farah looked at h
I stared out the window trying to catch a glance at the streets, but it was beginning to get dark and just left me wondering which packs had arrived. I climbed into bed wishing I could just sleep through the next four days. My birthday and the carnival would all pass by, and there wouldn’t be so much tension and pressure.6am came too soon.Farah's knock always made me smile, it was just so... her. When I opened the door however, it wasn't just Farah, the makeup and hair ladies had decided to tag along. They hurried me through the shower and whisked me and Farah into basic hair and makeup today. Farah had picked out my clothes today, bringing me out a yellow floor length dress that we had purchased the day before. It was much like a spaghetti strap on top, form fitting, but with sheer and flowy short sleeves, and a sheer overlay as it tapered out from my waist.I slipped into some comfy, dark colored flats, and watched as Farah slipped into a purple sun dr
“Avi breath,” Theo urged, but I didn’t even notice I had stopped, “the Timber pack has a reputation for never attending these things, I don’t expect them until last minute.”I could feel Farah instantly relax overhearing his words, her posture becoming less rigid as we waited, in what seemed like, the longest silence until we seen uniform vehicles approaching.I hadn’t seen anyone from Evergreen, besides Troy’s mate, but I recognized the Alpha who stepped from the vehicle. He was one of the few Alpha’s who had visited Moon Rising on multiple occasions before he took over their pack, but I had only ever caught glimpses of him through my window. I was never expected as a child to entertain guests, only after I turned 16 had my parents started to groom me to be proper, and now I know why.“Alpha Alexander!” Theo greeted him as he approached us, but Alpha’s always shook hands like coexi
I was consumed in watching them, the way they looked at each other and softly grasped at one another’s arms made it seem like they were just two halves of the same person, never meant to be apart. They were tunnel visioned to each other, never breaking their sight from one another or caring what was going on around them as they fell heavier and heavier into each other. As we all stood there watching their bond unfold, I could feel Echo’s longing for that to be us, she was like a giant puppy, lapping up all the emotions between them in awe. It was heavy, it was pure, it was everything. I was starting to understand what Echo had been saying, allowing myself to picture how it would feel to have that kind of unfiltered love, and maybe even crave that for myself.“Well,” Jacob interrupted the moment with a boasting laugh, “if that isn’t a good sign, I don’t know what is!” Jacob’s Beta had ushered Farah and her mystery ma
MYLO “Isabelle will be stripped of her powers until she is determined to not be a threat anymore,” Xander informed us. The room had been cleared of everyone but the royals, myself, Dahlia and Nora. “We have someone in Shadow Forest who can accomplish it and make sure it’s maintained,” Brianna said as she assessed me, “your father informed us that you would like the right to end Marcus’s life. Are you positive that you want to bear that burden, that you have thought about having to tell Nora in the future?” “We have,” I glanced down at Dahlia and Nora. “It’s my job to protect them, no one else should have to burden themselves with Marcus’s death. Nora will understand, if she cares to ask, that it was her life or his.” “With me then,” Xander motioned for me to fol
BRIANNA I was hesitant to keep my heirs in here for this, but the boys assured me they needed to see. Orion explained the nature of what was about to happen to Mylo and Dahlia who have both chosen to join us. “I’d like my mate to join me,” Marie’s timid voice rang out, “but if that’s not something you’d prefer, I would still like to remain.” Seeing as though Octavia would just fill him in later anyways, I gave her a nod of approval and Timber’s Beta was charged with keeping Nora safe in the next room. When Marcus came into the room, there was a shift in energy, as was to be expected, but when Terran entered the room, Dixon became visibly stiff. I knew Dixon had issues surrounding Fae, but to see such a strong immediate reaction was surprising. I guess he didn’t know that Marie’s mate was Fae until now.
BRIANNA Alaric may have felt like Nixon’s outburst was harmless, but anytime he let his powers slip was dangerous. I wanted to talk to him about it, not that it would change anything, but I also felt like I had talked about it with him until I was blue in the face. Nixon wanted to let his powers loose, he had been practicing with them lately, and I knew Octavia could help him to an extent, but it just seemed too dangerous to let his secret out. How many species would come for him? How would we stop them or protect him? Not only that, but I know from experience the hunger for controlling power killed my parents, Dez’s parents, and most of what should have been my pack. The problem was that he was too carefree, too powerful, and getting too old now for us to hold him back.
MYLOSomething happened between Nixon and Terran, what I wasn’t sure, but we could find out about it later when we had privacy. My mother scooped up Nora instantly when everyone made their way to the tables, positioning herself across from us, beside Brianna.“I’m glad to see your sister’s mate,” Xander started as he glanced down to where they sat at the far end of the table from us, “doesn’t insult easily.”“He’s used to dealing with my brother’s,” I smiled, “and he is mated to Marie.”“You’re too hard on her,” Wyatt laughed as he pulled Brianna into his lap, “what did you expect with parents like yours,&rdqu
TERRANMylo tried to prepare me for meeting their royals, and although they were something to take notice of, they clearly didn’t have the same effect on me as they did on everyone else. Marie was already wound tighter than cramped roots over everything that was going on, but when they walked in, every hair on her body stood at attention. Once they were in front of her, her energy shifted again as she dropped into a calm state that I hadn’t been able to get her to since the Marcus and Izzy incident. The kings were just how they described them, beastly in their appearance, dead inside if their facial expressions were any indication. Other than a side smile to the Luna, they were basically emotionless, standing by like psychopaths just waiting to be unleashed by their queen. When the heirs were introdu
DAHLIA I jolted at the sound when one of the kings cleared his throat. Watching the Queen be smitten with Nora was bringing a new level of comfort and happiness to me, a product I’m sure of the loyalty their blood brought out in me. It was a weird emotion to identify, but I felt in debt to them somehow when I’d only just met them, like any negative thought I could muster to think was suddenly gone and replaced with an intense need to appease them. My whole body seemed so relaxed now, a stark contrast to moments before they walked in, and it was easy to get swept away in watching the Queen take in Nora, so much so that I forgot anyone else was in the room with us. “You’ll have to excuse Brianna,” he started as he picked up my hand and kissed the top of it, “she’s apparently lost her mind now that a baby is
DAHLIAI was a nervous train wreck even though I tried not to let it show. I held my head steady as we walked into the packhouse, every wolf we passed looking at us with caution as we passed by.‘Your instincts are correct,’ Mylo linked me as he squeezed my hand slightly when we entered the dining area, ‘but you are safe here, so try to enjoy yourself, Luna.’‘That was definitely not the impression you just gave to Terran,’ I linked back as I caught sight of his parents. After he was done re-explaining things to Terran, I felt as though I had been given the child version of his warnings.&lsq
MYLO When Marie and Terran arrived they were escorted to an accommodation close to us to get settled in. Dahlia was pacing back and forth as I fed Nora. Anxious, like myself, to get the next few days over with, but it shouldn’t be long before Alderic is back to get ready for supper. Supper would be a good distraction for her as she focuses on the royals, but it posed another level of worry for me. While the royals never posed a threat to us before, Wyatt was unpredictable at best and I haven't had contact with the heirs often enough to be able to judge their behaviours. Dahlia's eyes were slightly glossed over as she 'tidied' up the place, pausing at one point and staring out of one of the windows at the front.I pla
MYLO “Is she pissed?” Alderic asked as I stepped outside to wait for Dahlia. “No,” I shook my head, “but you’re lucky SHE was the one who submitted you.” “Yea that one’s on me,” he shook his head, "all this Alpha energy is making Leto brazen. You'd think he'd be the opposite, I mean he's no coyote," he looked at me and laughed lightly, tucking his hands into his pockets, "but he's used to being around it, we've done things like this since we were kids." Leto had a history of trying to outrank other leaders so it didn’t come to me as a surprise. What mattered most to me was that he was already tempering Leto before Dahlia made him submit and that I knew when it came down to it that he would lay down his life for her and Nora.
