~ LAYLA ~

“I was expecting better.”

My heart thuds as I look at Dad as he looks at my reports from my trainers and teachers. But those simple words, void of any emotion, cut like a knife.

“I have paid for the best teachers for you. You have had the best of the best martial arts sensei, and your education has been nothing less than the highest of levels, yet your results show that money indeed cannot buy talent.”

“I did my best,” I say, staring at the stone-hearted man.

“Well, it wasn’t good enough,” he answers coldly. “Perhaps if you spent less time on meaningless things and focused better on what was important, these results might have been better.”

“Dad! I have scored over 90 percent on all my exams! I made it to the quarterfinals in the martial arts championship! I was the only girl to make it to the top 20! And most of them were alpha males!”

“Yes, as a girl; I should never have expected so much of you. Even Julian made it to the quarterfinals. You did nothing special there.”

~ LAYLA ~“You really have been kept in the dark about a lot of things.”Those words sting my pride a little, but it’s true. It’s as if everyone undermined me.“And your uncle, he never mentioned that to you either?”I shake my head. “No, he simply said that my father gambled away our family money and pack’s treasury as well as all the savings he was meant to be keeping safe. And that’s why my uncle decided to arrange my marriage to Logan, we apparently need the Dartmouth family’s wealth to help us,” I answer quietly, unable to look him in the eye, feeling humiliated.“And you believe that?” he asks quietly, my eyes snap to him, and I raise my brow.“What do you mean?”“Your father, Alpha Drakon, wasn’t a gambler. Trust me, I own a fleet of the finest casinos in the country, I would know. He was never seen in one.”That is what I want to believe.“I don’t know, my uncle would have no reason to lie…” I’m not so sure anymore.“Your father and my family knew one another a little, and we w

I tense as my core throbs at those words.Oh fuck, not now, please. I don’t need him to know he’s turning me on!I remain still as he releases me, but he still stands incredibly close. I can feel his body brush against my ass.“You got your phone… you should go,” I whisper breathlessly. But rather than just walk away, he leans dangerously close.“If you need a little help, ask for it,” he whispers. “This time I’ll let it slide.”My heart is thumping as I feel his fingers brush my back as he unhooks my bra for me. I gasp as I hold my bra over my breasts to keep what little modesty I have left.“Hmm… maybe I do need to see you fully naked… those breasts look extremely enticing…” he murmurs seductively into my ear.“Thanks… for helping…” I whisper, making the mistake of looking up at him over my shoulder. His eyes are filled with a carnal hunger, and for a second I don’t know how to react. Suddenly he steps back, his eyes becoming cold once more and I quickly back away, too.“I better go

~ LAYLA ~I shiver at the memory of last night and look around shaking off the unease.Quade is out at the moment; he usually is at this time and that only makes the itch to do something I shouldn't, grow.I pace my room, the sound of my padding footsteps loud in the room. How much do I actually know about him?He didn’t even let me speak to Julian, although he said he has passed the message on. I feel uneasy not being able to talk to him.Julian and I go way back. There was a time I even crushed on him, but he never had eyes for me. I just remember we went to school together and lived next door and he would always ignore me, although I was the alpha’s daughter. He was the one boy who never gave me attention, and it was his attention I always wanted. But despite growing up as a rebellious teen, with a temper and creating a bad reputation for himself, he never did anything to me.In fact, often we’d walk back from school and he’d always hang behind, and even when I tried to match his sp

QUADEWhat is she doing in my room? My face is emotionless as I watch her for any signs of panic, but her eyes simply run over me, and I decide to simply observe her without showing her that I might not just trust her…“Are you in that much of a rush to get back into my room that you enter uninvited?” I ask arrogantly as I walk over and take out a towel from the shelf above her head in the wardrobe, invading her personal space as my eyes flick over my shelves. Trying to see if anything was out of place. She instantly moves back, trying to put distance between us.“Not at all. I was a little cold. I thought I’d come steal a hoodie. You don’t mind, do you?” she asks, cocking a brow.I tilt my head; I don’t believe you…“Not at all. Help yourself,” I answer, my attention falling to the picture frame I have in there.Did she see it?I glance at her, catching her eyes on me again, but she doesn’t seem nervous… she’s far too distracted by me.I smirk as I move back. • Till Death Do Us Lie   13. His Displeasure

~ LAYLA ~“And that pretty much sums it up but you cannot tell anyone this.” I finish, crossing my legs as I lean back on the sofa looking at Julian, who is as angry as he was the day I told him about my decision to marry Logan. His jaw is ticking, his fists clench, his veins popping as he tries not to lose control.I filled him in on what the plan is but left out the fact that Quade was on my side and would be working with me on this plan. That was something Quade had made me swear I wouldn’t share, and he had made me take a Blood Oath.I glance at my right ring finger. The slight mark that remained from the Blood Oath is still there.Even if I wanted to I couldn’t tell Julian, even though I trust him.“I have a few questions, so I’ll start with the one that is fucking with my head the most. So let me get this straight. You will pretend to be ok with the man who fucking tried to rape you?” he snarls, glaring at me. My eyes widen, my heart skipping a beat at his visible display of rage

  • Till Death Do Us Lie   14. Faking It

~ LAYLA ~Julian drives me to the office building, and I make my way up to Logan’s office. I pass through security with no issue. After all, I have every right to be here, and no security guard tries to stop me.Julian is a few steps behind me. When the lift opens on Logan’s floor, I head straight for his office, walking straight past Sadie’s desk.“Excuse me!”I turn, frowning as I realise it’s not Sadie. The woman quickly gets up, rushing to block my path. “Y-you can’t go in there, Ma’am!”I stop in my tracks, narrowing my eyes.“Before you forget your place, remember, in this office I have every right to do as I wish. Now step aside.” I command in a low, menacing snarl. She gulps, hugging the file she’s holding, and steps to the side.“Wait here,” I say to Julian. “Please.”He looks away, his jaw ticking again, but I know he’ll listen.I push open the door to see Sadie standing extremely close to Logan as she plays with his tie. His hands are resting on her waist and they are far to

~ QUADE ~“So, is it good enough?” her voice comes down the phone. I glance out of the hotel window where I’m staying, looking in the direction of her home. This hotel teeters on her pack borders. One that gives me access to her pack without having to pass the guards. With her guidance, of course, or so she thinks. I already knew about the entryway she had disclosed to me from long ago.“It’ll do, Miss Blackwell. Although I hoped I’d get an invitation into your home, or a late-night offer if you get my gist,” I reply. She laughs slightly. “Well, at least it’ll do. As for any kind of invitation, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Besides, I can’t magically invite you here. People wouldn’t trust that. Look, tomorrow at the dinner meeting with Logan, just make sure our stories correlate or-”“Relax, deception is an art I’ve mastered a long time ago. I’m more concerned that you might blow our cover.”I can just picture her expression of irritation. I’ve learned that about her. Her patience

He’s closed the window too! He’s clearly finding this funny, which only annoys me further. I push my glasses up my nose as I try to push him back. “Hide!” I hiss.“Are you really telling me to hide?” he scoffs arrogantly. “You do know who I am, right?”An arrogant asshole, that’s who.“We can’t blow our cover, remember?” I reply with mock politeness, shoving him back.“It’s just a member of staff. Who cares?” he winks at me suggestively.I get to my feet, continuing to force him around to the other side of the bed and shove him to the ground with my full strength.I flinch as he hits the ground with a thud. ~ QUADE ~Her glittering eyes widen, and I can’t help but smile.“I love you, Layla. I fucking love you. You make me feel what I never knew I could.”She closes her eyes, tears trickling down her cheeks and I cup her face, leaning in to kiss her. “Wait!” she whispers, and I cock a brow, removing her glasses.“I did brush my teeth and shower in the hospital wing before I came to see you,” I murmur, making her laugh. “No! Not that, I want to tell you something first.” She pouts, “I love you, too.” I smirk. “I knew that, but I do want to hear that every single day.”This time I don’t wait for a response and press my lips against hers, claiming them in a deep hungry kiss. She whimpers against my lips as she cups my face, pulling herself even closer. I wrap my arms around her and lift her up as I place her on the drawer she was standing beside when I had snuck into our bedroom.I kiss her hungrily, my hands running up her thighs, enjoying the feel of her skin beneath my fingertips. • Till Death Do Us Lie   Epilogue Part 1

One Month Later…~ LAYLA ~It’s been a month since everything went down and it’s oddly… peaceful. To feel safe and relaxed is something I haven’t experienced for ages. My memories returned, so many where I spent moments with Quade, where I was crushing on him. He was my first crush, and that crush remained until my memories were erased. Through those memories I noticed how he became distant after a while. Cross-checking those memories with Julian, he confirmed that was when Tray told them I was his mate.Sickening.And right now, that’s all I have, these memories of him.The shot Reagon took was aimed to kill, containing the same poison as the blade I was given. But somehow Quade didn’t die. I felt his heart slow in my arms, and then it began pumping again. Julian thinks it was my gift, but if it was, then why is Quade still asleep? He didn’t wake up, and it’s killing me not knowing if he ever will.Nikita is healed; it took her two weeks of complete bed rest before she was able to g

  • Till Death Do Us Lie   96. Beyond the Illusions

~ LAYLA ~I have to trust Julian not to hurt Quade, or Quade to not kill Julian because I need to find Tray. They’ve been protecting me for so many years. It’s my turn to protect them. They are all that’s left of their brotherhood. Their bond is the only legitimate one.I need to think! It’s hard to, with the growls and snarls of the two men I care for fighting one another. I need to look past the illusion. But how do you do that when they are so powerful?Think! My heart is thudding, my ears ringing as I try to look beyond the storm within my mind.I need to shift! I’ll be able to mind-link Quade too!I shift, bones cracking and reforming before I look around me with keener eyes. The scent of my mate is intense in my nose.‘Quade…’ I trail off when something else fills my nose. The metallic stench of blood.I sniff the air, sensing Tray and Axel’s blood. I might be able to find him to put an end to this. I have to act fast before Tray realises and disguises the scent. He is able to ma

  • Till Death Do Us Lie   95. His Sins

~ LAYLA ~“Exactly. We all know Quade took good care of his little sister. He had a soft spot for her, so I wanted him to kill her. Sucks though, but he turned out weaker than I hoped. And he held out, even when I made it look like she was the one that killed your little baby brother!” He laughs again and Quade snarls, the sound ringing through the room as his rage surges forward.“You!”“Nikita didn’t kill him,” I whisper, Tray’s words sinking in and my heart leaps. I feel relief that I didn’t let Quade kill her, because he would have only felt worse.“No, she didn’t. Shame, she had it in her. And she decided to become a disobedient little bitch. Even after I made her think Quade had killed her mate, she still wasn’t able to harm Layla. Pathetic whore,” Tray spits at me.“Fuck…” Julian murmurs as he glances at me before he turns and walks over to Nikita and begins cutting her ropes. There’s going to be a lot of guilt there… I just hope both men can forgive themselves for how she was t

  • Till Death Do Us Lie   94. His Sick Games

~ LAYLA ~“Tray,” Julian breathes.“Why? If you’ve been alive all this time, then why did you pretend to be dead back then?” Quade is the first to ask the question on all our minds. His voice is low but strained with emotions, he’s good at hiding his emotions, but for him to let them slip, shows how much this is affecting him.“Oh, you mean that entire pond fiasco? Well, I had to plant the seed of doubt somewhere in the boys.” Tray smirks and I’m disgusted. This man is meant to be my mate? I feel nothing for him. There’s nothing, not even a pull. All I feel is anger.“But why, for what?” Julian asks. His anger is clear, and unlike Quade, he’s not trying to act in control of it. It makes Tray chuckle.“Look at the three of you, working together yet still. So. Fucking. Dumb! Why do you fucking think!?” he snarls. “You, Steele! You were the mother fucker I wanted to take down.” His eyes are fixed on Quade and I glance at him, feeling a pang of hurt for him. Quade’s eyes flicker. Is that c

  • Till Death Do Us Lie   93. What I Knew

~ LAYLA ~My heart is still hammering, even though it’s been ten minutes since I used the poisonous gas. But I still can’t wrap my head around it as I look at Nadia, who is tied up in the same place where I found Nikita. Her leg is bleeding profusely where Quade had shot her. Axel is tied to another chair, but he’s badly wounded. If he doesn’t get medical attention, he may die, not that either of the boys would care.“We should go take a look around her quarters and see what we can find. She must have a phone. We might be able to find out who she’s been talking to.” Julian moves forward, checking her pockets before he pulls out a phone.“Password lock,” he says, passing it to Quade.“I’ll have Eddie look into this. You and Layla go see if you can find anything else in her quarters or anything regarding her true identity.” Quade frowns as he looks at the unconscious woman, then back at the device.I cast a final glance at Nadia, feeling sick. This was the woman I trusted…“Come on, Layl

~ QUADE ~“Something isn’t right… they are on castle ground,” I mutter, as we park a good 100 yards from the entrance gates. Something isn’t right. Why is Axel here?“We need a plan before we just go in there,” Layla says quietly. I glance at her, trying to squash the jealousy that I feel and still feel knowing she kissed Julian. I’m acting irrationally, but there is nothing I can do to rid myself of this burning rage from inside of me, no matter how pathetic it is.I frown, “I think the only thing we can do right now is to get inside, find Axel and put an end to this.”“We need some kind of plan, Quade. If Axel’s there, then they have friends on the inside, and also it means he’s here to meet someone. I don’t think you should tell Eddie we’re here either,” Julian says.“A reasonable point. Let’s arm up.” I walk to the trunk and take out a few weapons. I’ll shift if I need to, but there is one thing I have to do before we enter.I need to tell Layla about what happened with Tray, even

What happened?”“Nothing. Now please let’s drop it,” I say, sighing softly. He glances at the door, then at me. “You told him that quickly?” he asks quietly, now coming over as he tosses the rubbish into the bin.“No, he knew.”“Because you’re not a good liar.”I sigh and look up at him. “It wasn’t because of you. I did something because I wanted to, because I realised something last night,” I whisper. His green eyes soften. There’s something there, a longing mixed with acceptance. “That you love him.” It’s a statement.I nod. “Yeah, exactly that. And I have no idea how to process that. I don’t even know when my feelings became more.”“Then when he’s cooled down, you should tell him.”I look up at him and nod slowly, when I have the courage becaus

  • Till Death Do Us Lie   90. A Truth or a Lie

~ QUADE ~Leaving Layla with Julian somehow made me uneasy. The gnawing feeling in my stomach kept growing, and although I told myself it's because of what I’m about to do, I couldn’t shake it off.I ended up parking halfway there and travelled the rest of the way in my lycan form. Keeping to the shadows of the night. The grave wasn’t hard to find, even if I haven’t visited it in ages, the memory of it isn’t one that will ever fade. Entering these forgotten lands where the Sapphire Pack once stood is harder than I thought it would be.I remain in lycan form, holding my bag in my hand as I pay attention to every sound around me.This was once a place I loved to spend my summers. If he’s alive and this is all his game, then those memories were all a lie, and proof that trust is usually misplaced.I look around the fields, it’s overgrown, covered in grass and brambles. No one visited, and neither did I. After the massacre, this was a place I didn’t want to come to, remembering the death o
