Ben hit the switch to the shed row, and the barn, with the exception of the tack room, went dark. He cracked the beers, handed one to Cassie, and motioned for her to sit. She crawled onto the chaise lawn chair opposite him and stared intently at the ceiling.

She had to reevaluate her life, make peace with it all, maybe find some direction. Right now, it felt like she was floating from one shitty moment to another.

She thought about how much life had changed since the racetrack closed three years ago. At the time, both Eryn and Cassie had horses and worked on track, but Cassie decided to give up racing and marry Greg. She sold her racers but kept Gunner and five mares and retired them to Eryn's farm. Gunner enjoyed life as a breeding stud, and the mares were a part of Eryn's breeding program.

When the track closed, Cassie looked for a new career path because she wanted to spend time with Greg. She wanted to be a wife and eventually a mother to their children, and horseracing meant travel which she wasn't willing to consider.

She began working as a receptionist for Randy Tyler at Tyler Investigations and immediately fell in love with the job, the exhilaration, and everything about it. Within a few months, she started a P.I. training course which included months of evening classes in procedure, self-defense, security, first aid, firearm safety, and firearm handling. She finished and received her license last month, and she had been so excited, so hopeful for the future. Now, she was lost.

Knowing that Greg probably held her job to blame for his wandering penis caused her to doubt what she thought was a good plan. Was it really her job? She couldn't consider leaving it, not after all her hard work, and she loved being a private investigator. But clearly the job and its hours were a problem, or maybe Greg was the problem all along.

Maybe she just fell in love with the wrong guy. She married him, believing him to be the right guy.

Would she ever find a man who was supportive of her career?

Would she ever find a man who she could trust to be faithful?

Shifting in her chair, her body felt stiff and on edge. Rigid anger and confusion made her muscles tight with tension, a tension she fed by kissing Ben. The silence between them was painful. What she did was insane. Greg lied and cheated with Sara, and she responds by throwing herself at her best friend's brother.

It wasn't one of her finest decisions, but it was in no way on the same level as what Sara and Greg did, not even close.

She could feel bad about it, but she already felt shitty enough. Kissing Ben gave her a moment's reprieve from her crap life, and for a moment, her heart didn't hurt.

Still, it was out of line and crazy. She acted like an idiot and there, sitting across from her, Ben sipped his beer, as casual as could be, while she died from embarrassment.

Sighing heavily, she rose, prepared to leave. "I'm gonna head in. Thanks for the sandwich and the beer." And the kiss, she thought, shaking her head at her wild behavior.

"Cass, wait." Ben closed the space between them. She eyed him, and he paused, staring at her like he wanted to say something else but couldn't quite find the words.

Smiling weakly, Cassie started to turn away, but Ben grabbed her wrist and yanked her into his arms. Before she could protest, his lips took hers, and she lost the inner struggle.

Hot damn, this guy can kiss, she thought.

He drew her in tight, kissing her hard while backing her up against the wall. His lips trailed her face and neck and then back to her trembling mouth.

Cassie really wanted to stop, she knew she should, but her throbbing vagina had a mind of its own, and that slutty bitch muzzled all protest.

Surrendering to carnal need and determined to feel good for one night, she let go of all the bad, so that she could thoroughly enjoy the moment.

The hell with reality.

The hell with it all.

Ben's hands caressed her body with skill and ease. One hand cupped her ass and pulled her against his hardness, and the other hand crept under her shirt to her breasts. His finger traced gentle circles around her nipple, driving her over the edge. Cassie grabbed at his belt, tugging on it as he moaned into her lips.

"Son of a bitch," Ben muttered breathlessly. He pulled back, pausing for a moment while glancing around, considering his next move. His gaze locked on hers before he scooped her up, carrying her over to the straw bales, kissing her ravenously along the way.

He put Cassie down, grabbed a horse blanket, tossed it across the bales, and motioned for her to sit. Kneeling between her legs, he gazed into her eyes as if asking for permission to continue. Nodding resignation for what they were about to do was all she could manage because there were no words, and logic would ruin the mood.

Her body trembled with desperate desire and fear, but the minute Ben cradled her cheeks with his palms and pulled her into a kiss, the trembling stopped. His hands worked quickly, and before she knew it, they were laying side-by-side and naked.

He pulled from her lips, staring into her eyes as his hands caressed her torso, sending shivers throughout her body. His touch, an aphrodisiac that she didn't expect took her breath away, but it was the way he looked at her, the hunger in his sparkling blue eyes that produced a flush of carnal heat that raged through Cassie's body like nothing she had ever experienced.

All of a sudden, she was hot as fuck for her bestie's brother. Again, it was like she was stuck in an alternate reality, hovering over herself, watching the show. Somewhere in the back of her mind, commonsense whispered instructions for her to stop, but she couldn't. She didn't know how, and she didn't want to. Heartache was the catalyst that fueled this inexplicable yet mutual passion, and she knew it, she welcomed it. Leaning in, her lips grabbed for his, and they kissed and caressed for as long as she could stand it until the burning desire to have him inside of her became more than she could handle.

Impatient and eager for release, she tossed him onto his back and climbed on, crying out in ecstasy as he entered her. Inhibitions be damned, she intended to get the relief that she so desperately needed.

She rode slow, at first, enjoying the feel of him inside her while they continued the maddening lip war. Ben's fingers tweaked her nipples, sending electric shockwaves throughout her body, the kind that fried brain cells and drove her mad with the desire for more.

Increasing her speed, she rode fast and hard while he throbbed inside her. She was close to release when he bucked upward, crying out as he came. Grinding against him, she hung on until seconds later that wave of ecstasy grabbed hold and sent her careening over the edge. Her muscles convulsed, squeezing his cock as she came in an explosion of lightning that pulsated throughout her body, from head to toe, with incredible intensity.

They rocked against each other until the tingling started to subside and then she collapsed on top of him, burying her face in his neck. A moment later, she rolled off and into the nook of his arm. Equally blown away, they remained silent as they tried to steady their pounding hearts.

Ben chuckled, breaking the silence. "So, that happened."

Cassie giggled, snuggling into his chest. "Probably we shouldn't have done that, but damn, it was awesome."

Ben moaned, burying his face in her hair, taking her in. "There's no 'probably' about it, but we both needed it." He raised his hand and brushed aside the just-been-shagged strands of hair that covered her cheek.

Enjoying the feel of his hands on her skin, Cassie closed her eyes. Her body half-draped against his, flesh against flesh, two hearts pounding in unison. It felt right, like home.

Amazing didn't even cover the sensation, but she knew it was one she shouldn't be feeling because it was one born or heartache and desperation. Reality slowly crept in, threatening to spoil her high, and she frowned.

What the hell did she just do?

She jumped on the first man to come along with zero-fucks-given precision, that's what she did. And it was good, so good! But the fucks she should have given before fucking her best friend's brother were now, taunting her, scolding her.

She didn't like it, but she also knew that she would never have shagged Ben, if Greg hadn't torn her heart out. If he hadn't shagged Sara, Cassie wouldn't be in this position. However, this position certainly felt good, so who was she to complain?

Fuck Greg.

She'd like to fuck Ben, again.

As if reading her thoughts, Ben's hand wandered into her nether region and gently stroked her, sending jolts of lust to her toes.

"I'm not done with you, yet." He rolled them, blanketing her body with his.

A giggle escaped her lips, but it trailed off, morphing into an elated moan.

While they were getting dressed, sometime around five in the morning, Ben yanked her into his arms, looking her square in the eye. The intensity of his gaze warmed her soul while also scaring the crap out of her.

"I don't regret this," he said. "It was exactly what I wanted. I know it's probably not the best time for you, but anytime you feel the need, you know I'm in."

Cassie wondered if he just asked her to be his fuckbuddy.

As if sensing the question, Ben added, "And not in a man-whore kind of way, either. I don't sleep around." He winked and turned to leave.

Cassie admired his ass while he walked away. "Well, that didn't just complicate my life further. Jeez."

Sighing with resolve, she started off on the walk of shame. Instead of feeling good about what she did with Ben, she felt sick, haunted by the knowledge that she stepped way over the line.

"Eryn's going to kill me," she muttered before drifting off to sleep.

How do you tell your best friend you shagged her brother, repeatedly?

Multi-coloured flashing lights and pulsing music brought the peculiar, dimly lit room to life. Cassie eyed the stage where a woman in sexy, black, lace lingerie and a matching feathered Mardi Gras mask danced to the music while sliding her crotch up and down the pole. Her entire body rocked and flipped around the pole with unrivaled skill. Tearing her awestruck eyes away, Cassie glanced around the room at the men attacking the stage, yearning for an opportunity to touch the dancing seductress. When their turn arrived, they eagerly slipped whatever money they had into the dancer's lacy G-string. Drifting towards the crowd, Cassie fought her way through until she reached the stage. She leaned forward, greedily reaching out, hoping to touch the beautiful dancer. At last, the Mardi Gras queen turned towards her, smiling with scandalous intent as she got down on all fours and crawled across the stage in Cassie's direction. Halfway there, the dancer licked her lips and flipped onto her

They began to wrestle the four yearlings that were heading out for sale into the trailer. Cassie enjoyed the task until one of the yearlings, a particularly feisty little bugger, bit her on the shoulder. "Jesus, Fuck!" Cassie squealed, and before she knew it, Ben appeared next to her. He pulled her t-shirt neckline over her shoulder to assess the damage. Cassie blushed as thoughts of what his hands did to her the night before washed over her. She looked down at her shoulder surprised that it wasn't bleeding because it hurt like hell. The pain lessened as Ben's touch created familiar shockwaves that awakened the hunger between her legs, causing her to forget her throbbing shoulder. Eryn strolled over and smiled apologetically. "I should have warned you about Piper. He can be a bit of a dick.""At least he didn't break the skin. You better go put some ice on that. I got this," Ben said, swallowing hard as he took the lead from Cassie and gently hauled Piper onto the trailer. "

As soon as Cassie entered the car rental agency, Sara raced towards her, sobbing hysterically. Grabbing Cassie by the arms, she held on tight as if trying to prevent her from leaving."I'm so sorry, Cass. I love you! But I love Greg, too!" Sara wailed while clinging to Cassie for dear life. "What?" Cassie yanked her arms from Sara's grip. "What?" she repeated, pausing as the reality behind her sister's confession hit her like a mountain of bricks. She backed away from Sara, reeling with anger, dizzy with it. "You love him? It wasn't just one time, was it?" Sara looked down, ashamed, but didn't respond. "Was it!?" Cassie shouted, startling Sara."No. Wait. Please, Cassie," she begged. "There's no one else here today. We close in five minutes. Come into the back and sit down. I will tell you everything, and if you hate me afterwards, I will understand. I deserve no less. Please, let me try to explain." Cassie stood dumbfounded, glaring daggers at her sister. Cassie took her time on the drive because she intended to give Eryn a decent head start. It was the least she could do, and it gave her time to ponder why her marriage had fallen apart. Truthfully, she thought things were good, but it was an illusion, a cleverly disguised lie. Something had to have been missing from their marriage if Greg felt the need to full-on pursue Sara. If it had been a mistake, a drunken one-off, Cassie might have been able to forgive him, but forgiveness just seemed like an impossibility. He was in love with Sara. The line had been drawn. The worst part was learning that Greg wasn't the devoted husband she so foolishly thought him to be. Everything she thought to be true, wasn't. Cassie couldn't even comprehend the kind of asshole who carried on as if his marriage was perfect while chasing his wife's sister. That kind of man was not the man she loved, but it turned out to be the man she married. Somehow, she missed the signs. The last three years of ha

Climbing into Eryn's truck, Cassie sighed. "It's over. Definitely over. I can't believe I wasted three years of my life on that lying, cheating, self-absorbed prick.""You didn't waste anything. Think of it as a lesson learned. Clearly, it was not meant to be.""I guess." Cassie shrugged, needing to change the subject, needing to forget, even if for just a little while. "Would you mind taking me shopping? I need a new car because I just gave him mine.""Sure, where do you want to go?" "Anywhere that sells minivans because that's what I want. I loved that minivan! It's too bad I destroyed it." She giggled."Don't you think you're a little young and single for a minivan?" Eryn questioned."Whatever," Cassie said, rolling her eyes. "I want something comfortable and roomy. Like I said before, no one would suspect a minivan driver of anything. It's the perfect surveillance cover, and I need to get back on the job, ASAP.""Okay." Cassie stared through the window of her minivan, eyeing the house she shared with Greg. The thought of stepping back inside to clear out her belongings was more than she could bear, but she knew it had to be done. The sun had begun to rise behind the house, surrounding it with a colorful halo-like glow. It looked so inviting, the perfect home, their home, what used to be her home. Sighing, she stepped out of the van and approached the house. As requested, Greg left the key under the mat. Cassie entered the house, startled to discover she felt like an intruder in a stranger's home. It was partly true. Although it had only been a few days since all hell broke loose, it felt like a lifetime. Tears escaped her eyes, but she swiped them away. Looking around the home they had shared so many good times in, she broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. The good memories she had were buried beneath the horrifying vision of her husband shagging her sister. She lost too much. Dreams of a futur

She drove back to the farm to unload and freshen up before leaving for the office. On the drive, Cassie mulled over the events of the past weekend. When she left for work on Friday, she had no idea her life would be turned upside down that very evening. Her marriage was over, but there was nothing she could do about it, so the only alternative was to push it to the back of her mind and move forward. Trying not to think about it would be a challenge, but she refused to spend her life being sad and bitter. Life was too short. It helped knowing she got a few digs in this morning. She smiled defiantly. If Greg and Sara were happy together, there was no way in hell Cassie would play the role of the beat-down, broken-hearted wife. She had way too much pride for that, but there was no reason why she shouldn't demonstrate her fury in a glorious act of vengeance. In situations like this, revenge should simply be expected. Cassie arrived at the office just after eleven in the morning. S

Randy knocked before opening the door to the first office on the left. Bursting with anticipation, her bubble deflated when she saw what reclined behind the desk of the pristine office. They must have worked all weekend to clean it, but the amazing office transformation was forgotten as soon as Cassie's eyes beheld the new guy. It took everything she had to disguise her disappointment. He didn't look like the kind of guy one would expect to ride a motorbike. He wasn't ugly, but he wasn't by any means hot. He was ordinary, nerdy. His freshly cut, wavy, light brown hair framed his clean-shaven face, and a lock of hair that had somehow escaped its otherwise flawless arrangement draped lazily across his forehead. As he stood, Cassie scanned his profile. He was maybe 5'8" with a medium build, piercing blue eyes, and black-rimmed glasses. Smoothing his hands down his body to straighten his clothes, he looked awkward, nervous, but it was only momentary and quickly replaced with a confident

Margot Woods whipped open the door and beamed before yanking Cassie into a mama-bear hug to beat all hugs. Cassie giggled, reached for Randy's hand, and followed Mom inside. They entered the living room where her father was seated, and Mom disappeared into the kitchen. Cassie scanned towards the kitchen and then the dining room, looking for Sara and Greg. She had been dreading this encounter, but Randy forced her to put on her big girl panties and face them. So here she was. Baby steps.Sara's laughter could be heard from outside. Focused on work, the hours passed. Again, voices from out front caught Cassie's attention although she hadn't heard the door chime. She stepped out into the hall and almost fell over with shock. Sara stood in a small circle with Daniel and Karly. She spoke quietly while holding Karly's hand and resting another on Daniel's arm. They appeared engrossed in whatever she was saying. Nothing about the conversation seemed hostile, so Cassie quietly backed into her office while briefly catching her sister's eye. It looked as though Sara had it handled. Cassie knew it wasn't her business and hoped it would stay that way.A few minutes later, Sara knocked and then entered the office. Cassie noted a sense of peace on Sara's face that could be attributed to the 'cleaning of house'."I've put everything to right, except for Greg," she sniffed as if trying not to cry. By noon, they arrived at the office, ready to roll. Feeling safe, Cassie and Randy strolled hand in hand through the front door in broad daylight. Gone was the sense of doom. Gone was the man who wanted her dead. Karly rose from her place at the front desk and greeted them with a smile. Her brown bob framed her face which held a lovely glow. "Welcome back. You must be relieved that Bolton's under house arrest," she said, her eyes conveying concern for Cassie. Karly didn't know that Bolton took his life the night before, and neither did Daniel, unless his precognition revealed the truth. They had no way of telling Karly without giving up Randy's initial intent or Daniel and Cassie's abilities, so Randy and Cassie agreed to just let it all play out.Cassie grinned with relief. "It's definitely good to know he'll have a difficult time taking another shot at us."Daniel appeared next, moving down the hall towards them. He smiled and nodded a hello as if all was well in the world. He

Cassie rose early and with Mooch in tow, headed straight to the barn. Overnight a blanket of fresh fluffy snow covered the slush by at least two feet, but the still air defied the evidence of last night's blizzard. The silence was amazing. She paused, closed her eyes, and inhaled a long slow calming breath. The cool morning air flushed her cheeks, but she welcomed the feeling, she welcomed the prairie chill that ripped through the fabric of her jacket. She was alive. Bolton was gone and she could really live again. As she continued towards the barn, she noticed a spring in her step, and her body didn't feel rigid with worry. She fed the horses and then took Mooch for a walk around the property. She imagined a check list of things to deal with and crossed off Bolton's name. Immediately below his was Melody. She needed to know if he did indeed kill himself, and if so, why? It just didn't make any sense. She could see it, if he had finally exacted his revenge and killed her, as a way of escaping prison, but before he got to do the deed? No. She just couldn't accept it.Closing her eyes, she focused, relaxed, drifted: Mist surrounded her, the blinding kind, so she knew she was close. Within seconds it began to clear, and she could take in her surroundings. Bolton entered his home through the front door and walked straight passed her as she stood in his living room unnoticed. "I can't believe he'd do this.""Jesus," Eryn hissed. "Do you know when? Where?""I saw this while awake and the last time that happened it was an immediate thing. We need to go to the city, to Bolton's house, to try to stop it, but I think it's too late." "Why would he do that?" Eryn said. "I mean, Bolton was busted lighting fire to his house and yours, he was going to jail." Cassie remained silent, but she could feel Eryn's suspicions grow in the awkward air that surrounded them. Twenty-four hours of cyber stalking, mini-naps, and watching the tag on Bolton's car go to his place of work, Thomas Tire and Auto, and then home, felt like a lifetime. With an ankle monitor on, Bolton lead a boring existence, but so far, he'd adhered to the court mandated restrictions. They caught a break in surveillance thanks to a buddy of Randy's at the station who provided them with Bolton's work schedule that he submitted for monitoring. Randy thought he'd have the poison figured out by tomorrow and would plant it while Bolton was at work. The plan was falling into place. It was a shaky plan that Cassie wasn't comfortable with and poison seemed ridiculous and obvious. A gun to the head, that made sense, but Randy though it was too loud, messy, and hard to wash their hands from it.
