Lily hurried towards the employee break room that also served as a locker room. She tossed her things into a small gray locker and slipped on the mandatory white lab coat. The whole time she ran over her cover story. She’s there two hours early because she wanted to try to get on top of the backlog they currently had. Lily put on a pair of latex gloves and took out the pills her dad gave her from the evidence locker.
She had only done a basic test of the pills against known drugs, but it came up negative on all counts. So today she was going to go into a deeper analysis. Crushing one pill, Lily brushed the power into a petri dish and placed it into a large machine. The machine would tell her the chemical makeup and it should help her determine what the pill was for.
Putting the bottle back into the locker, she decided to give some truth to her cover story. Taking one of the many samples waiting to be tested, Lily began to work. She’d made more progress when she heard shouting. Lily glanced up, wondering if Henry, the lead chemist, had pissed off Celine, the very pregnant and very irritable biochemist.
Lily shook her head with an eye roll. When would that man learn to stop messing with her? Lily wondered as she returned to work. She was starting to see why he’s divorced. Men like him were one reason she avoided relationships. The benefits didn’t come close to outweighing the bullshit that came with it.
“Henry, I swear if you dare try your shit on me-“ Lily started when she heard the door keyed open.
“Henry’s busy at the moment,” an unfamiliar voice replied. Lily spun around in her chair to see a muscular man with a ski mask standing in the doorway. Fear slid through her as she watched him toss the card key to the floor and walked towards her. “Where are they?” He demanded, standing before her now.
“Where’s what?” she asked, though she felt she knew what he came looking for.
He made a sound of disgust as he grabbed her lab coat and pulled her out of the chair. “You know perfectly well what,” he told her coldly.
This was serious, she realized. Those dead teens, the attempted kidnapping. Someone was out to hurt her father’s pack. Feeling a strange sense of bravery. Lily looked up at him. “No, I don’t know. There are so many dru-“ she started.
The thief interrupted her as he made the sound of a buzzer from a game show. “Wrong answer!” Then backhanded her across the face hard.
Lily felt her world spin, and she shook her head as the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. She tried to clear her blurred vision, then looked up at the man before her. She had learned one thing from all her time studying criminal investigation. Details, any and all details, mattered. The thief had cold, dark eyes and light brown or blonde hair, judging by his eyebrows. He was pale with full lips that were only a little darker than his skin complexion.
“I don’t have all day, human,” he snapped, shaking her and breaking her concentration.
Human, did he just call her human? Werewolf! He’s a werewolf! Another slice of fear slid through her.
“Where is it?” he insisted, and she noticed his dark eyes were changing into a yellowish brown color.
“I’m not going to tell you,” she said, glaring up at him.
The thief was not expecting her defiance as he growled. “What do you mean, you’re not going to tell me?”
She smirked at him, feeling some confidence in the fact that the werewolf had to have half a brain. He’d have to know killing her would bring much attention to this area and his kind. “Wow, fluffy,” she teased. “You sure aren’t a bright one; I mean what I said. I am not going to tell you anything!”
He snarled like a rabid dog, and his eyes almost glowed like molten gold. “Stupid woman,” he spat, then tossed her across the room.
Lily screamed as she flew, crashing into the wall and slid down it to the floor. Okay, teasing the big bad wolf maybe not such a good idea. She groaned as she pushed herself up onto her hands and knees. It appeared that everything remained in working order and nothing had been broken. Bruised as hell, but not broken. Thank God for small miracles.
Lily cried out in surprise as the thief pulled her up and once more demanded to know where the pills were. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m not going to tell you,” she said and flinched when he punched a hole in the wall close to her head.
“If you do not tell me, then I promise I’ll kill everyone in this building as you watch. Then I’ll kill you,” he threatened.
Lily smirked at him again. “No you won’t! Theft in a crime lab is bad enough, but killing everyone? That’d be beyond stupid. You’d bring down so much attention on this town. There’d be no way you’d be able to prevent them from discovering what you are.”
“Unless I make it look like some junkie or gang hit,” the thief said, taking out a Glock 45. He waved it around as if saying, See what I’ve got.
Lily’s eyes widened, and she swallowed a lump in her throat. “Alright,” she relented, and he let her go. She stumbled back. Her limbs were a little shaky. She leaned against the large analyst machine for support.
“Where?” he barked, causing her to flinch.
She looked up at him with a glare. If there was one thing she hated more than anything, it was bullies and this guy was a big one. “I’m going, Fur Ball,” she barked back then walked over towards the evidence locker. Lily unlocked the cabinet and grabbed a similar orange pill bottle. Only this one contained ecstasy. “Here,” she said, thrusting them into his hand. She hoped he wouldn’t be able to know the difference.
He shook the bottle and tossed it across the room, growling at her. The thief grabbed her by the back of her neck and pulled her close to him. “I’m losing my patience with you! Give me what I want or I will kill people!”
Lily let a breath out through her gritted teeth, sounding much like a hiss. She took the pills out of her pocket and held them out to him.
“Good girl,” he said with a tone of approval as he took them.
She glared at him, furious with him and herself. “Bite me,” she snapped before she could stop herself. Her eyes widened as she realized the implications of what she’d said.
He raised an eyebrow up and gave her a curious look as he tucked away the pills in his pants pocket. “That pretty little mouth is going to get you into big trouble someday,” he told her. His tone made it sound almost as if he was flirting with her. A small, sly smile spread across his mouth. The thief pulled his hand into a fist and slammed it hard into one machine next to her, destroying it.
“What are you doing, asshole?” Lily shrieked as he repeated his attack on another machine. “Stop it! What are you doing?” She insisted, grabbing his arm to stop him.
“Should have done what I told you the first time, human,” he replied as he then swung around and hit her.
Lily felt as if her head had exploded. Bright white light burst behind her eyelids and then everything went to black.
Lily groaned and slowly opened her eyes. The brightness of the light reflecting off the white walls hurt her eyes. Her whole body ached as she tried to sit up, but decided against it. Her head was pounding with a horrible headache. She reached up to rub her sore temple, noticing the bandage there.Where was she, and why did she hurt so much? Oh yeah, the stupid thief at the lab. He’d hit her. “Lily, you’re awake,” Lacy cheered. She opened her eyes slowly to peek at her sister. Lacy’s usual well-groomed blonde hair was all a mess. Her eyes are red and puffy, and her clothing is all wrinkled and twisted.“Hey Lace,” Lily croaked with a small smile as she tried to sit up. Her sister pulled her into a tight hug. “Oh easy, easy. It hurts everywhere,” she said, feeling her body protest.Lacy immediately let her go with a guilty look and apologized. “I am going to call the doctor, who is too cute by the way, and everyone. They went down to the cafeteria about twenty minutes ago,” Lacy told h
A couple of hours later, Lily was free of the hospital and tossed the cop’s card into the trash. They questioned her and she answered with mostly lies to protect the pack. She walked to her car, then paused. What little good mood she had dissipated when she saw Tony leaning against her car. “What are you doing here, Tony? I thought I told the grand and powerful alpha I can make it home on my own,” she said, letting her irritation show.“Aw, not happy to see me?” he teased with a pout.Lily narrowed her eyes at him. “Not if it means what I think it means,” she replied.Tony looked at her with a sly expression. “Yeah, Dad sent me here to keep watch over you for a few days. You know, make sure the werewolf doesn’t want to finish what he started. Also, he wants the p
James could hear the alpha shouting at the woman in his office. “Here they go again,” Doctor Thompson said, shaking his head. James gave him a questioning look. The beta nodded his head. “Yes, they do this often. They may not be related by blood, but both have similar personalities,” he told him with a chuckle. His curiosity flared once more and almost asked the beta about her when the door flew open. Andrew stomped out of the room with the human in tow. Both were glaring at each other and the anger filled the room, making everyone, even him, tense. The human tried to break free from the alpha’s grip as she demanded that he let her go, but the alpha ignored her. He opened the front door and pushed her out onto the porch. “Stop trying to act like a one-man army,” he demanded in a harsh snarl. “I will tell you once more that you will do as I say! A pack is as strong as its weakest member and the pack will pr
Once they arrived at the lab, an officer was waiting for him. “Hey Tony, and James Lacrosse, I presume?” he asked and James nodded. The officer seemed a little nervous. “Only you can go in, sorry Tony, and please don’t touch anything or otherwise Detective Scott will have my ass! That woman is a real bitch,” the officer complained, and James gave him an encouraging smile.“Don’t worry about me. I won’t touch a thing since I only need to check out the scents, which will only take me a few minutes,” James told him, passing the yellow tape and walking into the lab. James walked through the narrow hallway. He saw that the room at the end of the hall was a mess and he knew that was what he was looking for. Upon entering the room, the amount of destruction immediately shocked him.Not a single piece of equipment was intact. This must be where the human woman worked.
“You heard that, did you?” Tony asked, looking sheepish, and James nodded, leaning closer towards his friend.“Yes, I did. Now tell me what it meant,” he insisted. Worry ate at James; did he burden them too much with his problems? Which of them could have a problem with him? He glared at Tony, who was hesitant to discuss it.“Swear you won’t tell anyone! Hell, she doesn’t even know that I know,” Tony explained, and James nodded even more confused. Who could it be? Lacy or Sandy? He had thought he was on good terms with both of them; they both seemed excited to have him back in town. Tony took a deep breath and let it out. “It’s Lily. She can’t stand your guts,” he admitted.“The human?” James asked with a scoff, yet irritated by the
When Lily got home, she grabbed a bottle of Jack Daniels and threw herself on the couch, pushing her thoughts about the fight she just had with her father away. Andrew had embarrassed her in front of everyone, dragging her out of the house like that. Lily opened the bottle and took a long drink. There was nothing that a good bottle of Jack Daniels couldn’t fix; she thought as she took another drink and she was in need of some serious JD therapy. “Damn werewolves! Who needs them?” she grumbled loudly and took yet another drink. The next morning Lily woke to feel as if someone had jack hammered her head the whole night. She let out a long groan as she forced herself up off the couch. She wobbled to the bathroom and opened the medicine cabinet to grab her strongest pain killer. Once she had swallowed the two large white pills, she brushed her teeth, hoping to rid her mouth of its horrible as
Tossing the phone down, Lily wondered if she had waded into waters too deep for her, not that she would ever admit it to anyone. After what happened with Andrew yesterday, she wasn’t about to go crawling toward him, telling him he was right. “No,” she told herself, getting up, “I can handle this. I don’t need anyone’s help!” She dressed and ate a meager breakfast, as she was too nervous to eat more, then went to the University to do just what Dr. Frankenstein wanted her to do.The ringing of a cell phone caused Lily to lift her head up from the keyboard where she’d fallen asleep. She rubbed her keyboard imprinted face, hoping to wake herself up some. Lily had spent the last two days examining the pills she had hidden at her home. She had learned quite a bit, using her own blood as a sample to test the effects of the drug. Lily didn’t have James’ blood to compare it with, which would have given better resul
The next day, James and Tony hit some more local hot spots, but the cold rainy weather meant very few people were out and about. It was Sunday afternoon; James shook off the rain from his jacket and entered the diner where he’d eaten on Friday. The murmur of the diner quieted and people turned to look at him. It flared his irritation, and he wanted to shout at all of them to turn around and stick their noses in their own business. Instead, he walked over to the large corner booth where Tony, Lacy, and their mates sat.“Hey everyone,” he greeted as he sat down next to Lacy. Chris held out his hand and James took it for a moment, then released it.“Heya James, nice to see ya,” Chris greeted with a laid-back ease that surprised James a little since laid back or ease didn’t describe the typical reaction he got from people. James hadn’t spoken to the werewolf much,
“So,” she said slowly, and he was sure she felt as awkward as he did right now. “What brings you over here today?”“Besides the fact I want to spend some time with my son?” James asked, a little bitterly, and he saw her wince even though she tried to hide it. He knew it was wrong, but it made him feel a slight feeling of satisfaction. “I came here to let you know I want to spend Saturday with him.”Lily seemed to think about something, then nodded. “That sounds good. I heard the weather is going to be nice then, and I saw a cool park on main street,” she said and James was again a little surprised that not only did she have any problems with it but thought it was a good idea.“Good, so I’ll be here around ten?” James asked, and she nodded.“I’ll have him ready by then,” she offered. He returned her nod and stood up, about to leave, but Sandy insisted James stay for dinner, not that he put up a fight to leave. Her cooking was the best he had ever eaten, pl
James put his tools in the back of Freddie’s truck, feeling famished and ready to eat. “Hey James,” he heard someone called after him. Damn it, he swore silently. Why did everyone bother him when he was about to eat? He turned to see Chris walking up to him. What was he doing there? How’d he even know where to find him?“Hey Chris, what’s up?” He asked as he grabbed his food and took out the large sandwich he made that morning.“Well, I was wondering if I could talk to you about Lily,” Chris offered, and James sighed with a shake of his head.“What about her?” He said with an edge to his voice, but honestly, he didn’t care. What more was there to talk about that woman?“I know things are a bit messed up and you’re mad, but I wanted to ask if you would go easy on her,” Chris said and James scoffed as he took a bite of his sandwich. “Look James, she’s been through a lot during the time she’s been gone,” he added, with a hint of anger in his voice. James was getting angry.“Yeah, yeah, y
“So what are we really doing?” Chris asked once they were outside.“Well, first I'm really going to check out the town so I can be seen. Remember, I got to make sure it’s well known that I’m back in town,” Lily told them as they walked to her old car inside the garage. She really hoped it would start considering the layer of dust covering it. “I also thought about visiting Lacey,” she said quietly as they got into the car. Chris shot a pained look in her direction.“That one you’ll have to do without me,” he told her with a frown and she returned his frown.“I think you should go with me, Chris,” she replied as she attempted to start the car.“No, Lily. I’m not going,” he said firmly. She sighed, knowing he wouldn’t change his mind and continued to coax her car into starting. Finally, it started and purred to life and Lily smiled. I knew I could count on you, baby, she cooed silently.“Alright Chris, I won’t ask you again,” Lily told him as she backed out of the garage and down the dr
“But you hate me,” James said, sitting up when she admitted to wanting to be friends. His look grew more intense, and her nervousness spiked. She almost demanded that he quit looking at her like that, but she knew the situation was already on thin ice and that would make it worse.“I don’t hate you, James, and I didn’t hate you…not really. You were just a convenient target for my anger,” she told him, repeating Charlie’s words almost word for word. For a moment he kept giving her that look, making her squirm in her own skin.“So you don’t hate me and you want to try to be friends,” he repeated as if he wasn’t sure what he was hearing was correct and she stated once more that was what she wanted. “Alright, we’ll let the past stay in the past and start new. Deal,” he said.“Deal,” she replied, not feeling as happy as she’d thought she would. James agreed to start fresh, try to be friends, and he hadn’t mentioned mates at all. He got up from the bed and started towards the door.“James,”
Lily walked over to the rickety old desk and opened a drawer. Digging through old papers and reaching way in the back, she found what she was looking for. Lily sat on the bed and looked at the framed picture. She brushed the dust away with a sigh as she examined the three smiling faces. The man was tall and strong, with long dark raven hair and a bronzed complexion. His hand was on the little girl’s shoulder. She had the same dark hair and complexion. He always seemed so strong, Lily thought with a small smile. She turned her attention to the woman. Her brunette hair was cut in a type of pixie style; she was wearing a black tank top with cut-off shorts. She loved to wear them when the summer heat came. This was the only picture she had that her mother wasn’t high, drunk, or looked like she’d rather be anywhere else but there. Maybe that was my fault too, Lily thought as she remembered one
That could have gone better; Lily thought as she closed the porch door and walked towards the fireplace. But when she thought about it, Lily couldn’t say she was surprised. Deep down, she knew he was right. She was being selfish and…a coward. With a sigh, Lily warmed her icy hands. She didn’t feel the cold while she gave her vampire more control than the lycan. Lily had learned how to play with the balance between them and herself to work to her advantage.“Hey Lily, I would like you to meet our new lead enforcer and his family,” she heard Andrew say, and she turned to her father. The new lead enforcer was a bulky and tall man. One that looked like he could crush a man’s skull just using his biceps and next to him was a smaller woman, smaller than she was, with curly brown hair and hazel eyes. With them was a little girl who eyed her with curiosity. “This is Darien Smith,” Andrew introduced him.“A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Nawassa,” he said in a deep, smooth, baritone voice.“Thanks,
James felt a sense of relief, knowing that the little boy didn’t have to face the duality of Lily’s existence, but sorry to hear he’d be like him, though she still hadn’t answered his question. “I understand why you didn’t tell me during the pregnancy and maybe even the first months, but that still gave you plenty of time to tell me,” he told her in a hard tone. She sighed and looked a little lost in what to say. “I don’t know James. My life got busy and time flew. I figured you would have moved on and wouldn’t care anymore,” she said with an exasperated tone.“Wouldn’t care? How the hell would I not care to know that I have a kid?” He demanded, his voice rising slightly, but he didn’t wait for her to answer. “Why don’t you just say the truth, Lily? You didn’t want to tell me, just as you didn’t want to tell me about that serum of Xavier’s,” he went on. “Only this is worse. Instead of trying to kick me out of your life, you’re robbing me of my rightful place in the life of my own son,
James had to see Lily. He followed her scent when Tony blocked his search. “Hey Tony, how’s it going?” He asked out of politeness alone, at the moment he couldn’t care.“Well, it’s been interesting,” Tony said with a half-smile and James stopped and looked at his friend, confused.“Interesting?” James asked, not sure what he meant by that.“Yep, Lily hasn’t been here for but a few hours and she’s already pissed most everyone off,” he said and it surprised James to feel a smile cross his lips.“What she did she do this time?” He asked, amused and happy to see that at least some things stayed the same, but another flash of surprise hit him when Tony looked a little uncomfortable.“Well, I can’t go in to great detail, but let’s just say she’s been keeping something to herself she shouldn’t have been,” Tony said and James’s smile died. Dread filled him, as all he could think of was that she had indeed replaced him with another man.“You’ve got to tell me, Tony, is she…with someone else? I
“Hey James,” a high pitched gleeful voice broke James from his thoughts. He looked up and did his best not to cringe as he saw the woman approaching them.“Hey Ginger,” he replied, trying his best not to sound as irritated as he felt. She was an attractive wolf, there was no doubt about it, but he wasn’t interested, and Ginger just didn’t seem to get that in her head. It didn’t help that six months ago he let her kiss him when he was feeling really low and lonely. Thank God he came to his senses and stopped her before they went too far, but it was too late to keep her from getting ideas.“Hey ya, Ginger,” Freddie greeted with a sly smile. He knew what had happened and, of course, thought it was hilarious. She gave him a brief wave of the hand and instead kept her focus on James.“I wanted to come by and invite you to lunch,” she told James with a bright smile and James wanted to roll his eyes. He knew she wanted to invite him, that’s why he had been ignoring her calls.“I’ve already g
