Nasreen prepared herself mentally before entering the lecture hall. It seated just about one hundred students. The Hall became quiet as soon as the students saw the lady standing in front of the podium.
She was mildly anxious. She hoped it went well.
Thanks to her dad, for not allowing her to wallow in misery. He made her do something instead of seating at home all day doing nothing, crying over a boyfriend, who left her in the lurch for three freaking months. She never heard from him, but she heard from his friend that he had gone to America. That was all.
One evening he told her he did not like seeing her like that that she should get something doing. "But dad I don't know what to do.""You have a lot to do my child." "Like what dad?" "Nasreen, you were the best graduating student in your Ph.D. class, you don't know how proud I am of you, it hurts me a lot to see you in this state thinking and crying over a man who doesn't respect you enough to leave you without an explanation.
You are a strong, young, and independent lady.. I worked too damn hard to make sure none of my children is dependent on anybody for his happiness.I cannot sit and watch you lazing around my house doing nothing when I know you have the potential. You deserve more than this, that is why I told your mom earlier to give me your resume and guess what?""What dad?" "You have being offered to lecture at Nile university."
Nasreen was incognizant of the news, but when she gasped at the thought. "Oh my God, daddy I love you," She hugged him tightly. "I love you daddy thank you so much." She stuttered, she was in tears already.
"You are welcome, you deserve all the happiness in this world may Allah reward you abundantly.
Get ready you start next week, but I'll take you to the school tomorrow you will be shown your office." "Oh my G, dad, I get to have an office?"
"Yes, you do." He smiled proudly at her. She called her sisters and shared the good news with them, and made a video of how she was going to lecture her ass off. They were so proud of her and said she would make a good lecturer.
**
"Hi, I am Nasreen Bature Sulyman, I will be taking your chemistry 4251, and just so you know I am not my body type," The students laughed. "I do not like latecomers, and unnecessary noise if you want to make noise you are excused to leave my class, but schooling is not your choice it's your parent's... I am sure there are a lot of you here who are not willing to be here," The whole class roared with laughter, then fell into silence again.
"You with glasses care to share what is trending on Twitter?" All eyes were on the student."So enough of the shenanigans, and without any further ado, let's get to what brought you to school." She said in a crisp tone as if she was not the one that joked around with the students.
And so became the young lecturer that always left students wondering how she was so young and all, very outspoken, very intelligent, smart, beautiful, young, suave, and Savvy.
Nobody dare missed the lecture when it was Miss Nasreen Bature's lecture. Students loved her easygoing and kind nature. She spoke to the students as though they were her friends. From the first day she had taught her first class, she gradually created a bond with them, they could relate and communicate so well whenever she taught them.
She permitted them to call her by her first name. She was never the type that wanted to be deemed superior to her students. But because of that the students respected her a lot and called her Ms. Nasreen. In her presence. But behind her back, she was called Nasreen kwaruwa, Nasreen the guru, or effiko, and the rest names for a guru.
Even the lecturers called her that, cause they agreed with the name, there was a time when almost all the lecturers sat on a question no of them could figure out how to solve it.But the moment Nasreen came to the meeting. They gave her the problem and in less than ten minutes she solved it. They were in awe that day and intrigued by her virtuoso. She was respected and loved everywhere she went. She was a great asset to the school.
At least she had gotten something to take her mind off Habeeb... Habeeb for two months since she started lecturing every night before she fell asleep, she cried hoping that one day he would call her, tell her it is a dream and he would tell her how much he loved her how he couldn't stop thinking about her. She stared at her phone at times for a long time waiting for his call or text hopefully.
But with time things got a bit better, she had stopped crying herself to sleep, she had accepted that this it is life and it is filled with different trials and hardships. And that God doesn't burden a soul more than it can bear... And so when life throws lemons at you, you make lemonades out of the lemons. And that there was always someone for everyone. She told herself that not every relationship ended up with marriage, and not all marriages ended up successful. Even though you thought you loved somebody immeasurably unforeseen circumstances could make you live without them in your life. And you don't need anybody's permission to be happy, only you can give yourself that permission.
One day, After she returned from school. She was playing a game with her younger brother. When her dad came in.
"I want to see you in my room now, Nasreen."
Her heartbeat paced. what could be wrong? this brought back poignant memories of Habeeb the day her father said he wanted to meet him six months ago.
She murmured some duas before saying her salams and entering her parents' room.
"I am here dad.""Yauwa Nasreen, I think you may know the reason why I called you."
"I have the slightest idea dad.""You know you are my jewel, and you know how proud I am of you, how you have been the coolness of our eyes, even if you are very strong-headed at times."
Nasreen let out a giggle. "Yes, dad and I will continue to make you proud always in sha Allah."
"Allah ya miki Albarka, Have you thought about marriage?"
No dad, I don't want to get married now."
"Why is that? I see you have gotten over Habeeb, now is the right time for you to move on and start your own family, do you have anybody serious now?""No, dad and, I am not looking for anybody.""I have an idea, you can see how things worked out for Sultana right?" "But dad, I am not Sultana."
"Don't you trust me? I am not pressuring you, this is your home, and I am not tired of you, I know it is better to marry late, than to be rushed into a wrong marriage, I just want to know if you are ready to get married, cause I have been getting numerous marriage proposals for you, they are waiting for my answer, so I thought I should ask you."
"I...I..It is just that I don't know if I am ready yet, I need time to think about it."
"You can go to your room, take your time and think about it, no pressure okay." "Yes, daddy thank you."
****
She slammed the door behind her, she slithered slowly on the floor. And let out her anguish, her pain, Suddenly everything came crashing down on her...She remembered all his promises... They were all lies!! lies!! He never loved her, Damn you, Habeeb. Her mom and Sudais came in. "Please Nasreen stop crying, and put your trust in Allah, everything is going to be fine we are your parents we will never hurt you. and force you if you don't want it."
"But mom.." she wanted to speak but the words won't come out. "It is okay Nasreen." She stroked her hair gently.
***********
"Where is Nasreen?" her dad asked as they ate breakfast. "You know she never wakes up on time." "Hope she is alright?" "She would be in sha Allah."
******
"Mom, can I go visit Ya Sultana?""Yes you can how are you?" "I am fine mom." She said forcing a smile which turned into soft whimpers. Her mother hugged her again. She had lost how many times her mother hugged her, her mother had been one of her biggest support throughout this difficult time.******
"Ya Sultana... Nasreen hugged her sister tight. "Lecturer Nas Nas, how are you?""Yaya, I am not fine." " Why? what is wrong with you?" "Dad wants me to get married.""What, to who?"
"I don't know.""I know dad would never do anything that will hurt you." "Ya Sultana just because yours worked out doesn't mean mine would work out, I am scared."
"It is okay to feel scared, I understand, just be laid back, think positive, and keep praying to God."
*****
Sabir and Sabran came running "Maama..." they squealed in excitement. "How are my babies doing hope you had a great time and didn't give daddy and uncle Irfan a hard time.""Aunty Nas, I missed you." Said Sabir
"Aww Habibi... I missed you more, Bran why are you moody, where is daddy?""Daddy is right here."
"Hey, our youngest lecturer in the house, how are you?"
"Am good ya Sultan, good afternoon, good afternoon ya Irfan.""Hello, Nasreen Good afternoon congrats..."
He said in a crisp tone."Maama Aunt Nas won't stop crying." Sabran came running downstairs. Sultan, Irfan, and Sultana were alarmed. "I'll just go and check on her." Sultana left.
"What could be wrong with her?" Irfan asked Sultan.
"I don't know, but ever since what that Habeeb guy did to her, she has lost her spark.. she has not been her normal bubbly self."
"That is a very sad story no one should be allowed to treat someone that bad. May Allah bless her with someone deserving of her love." Irfan said and continued what he was doing on his phone.
The meal was served and they ate happily, "No wonder you are just growing fat big bro. Your wife is always making your tasty meals."
"Aww, Irfan That is nice but I didn't cook it, Nasreen did."
"Nasreen!!! Sultan said in awe. He knew Nasreen hated cooking. So wayo kike mana all these while. so you have been tricking us."
"Haba mana Ya Sultan.. you know cooking is not my thing, mun bar wa su Yaya mun we have left cooking for their Sultana just once in a while would do."
"So how is the lecturing going?"
"Very fine Ya Sultan, I love teaching people, it has always been my dream to impact knowledge on people."
"That is great Nasreen, I am proud of you." Sultan said.
Irfan was listening to their conversation. But He excused himself and went to answer his father's call. "I'll see you guys later dad says he wants to see me.""Okay, bro bye-bye." "Bye Nasreen take care." He said in a crisp tone."Baba ina yini I came as soon as I got your call."
"That is very good my boy. But the reason I called you is.. There was no reason to beat around the bush, What do you think about marriage?"
"Marriage is a good thing and right thing, when you have meet that one person you want to spend the rest of your life with."
"How about finding the person you want to spend the rest of your life with?"
"That would be nice dad." "Cause I think I have found you the person that you would love to spend the rest of your life with."
"Wait what !! dad me? Who? Why? and when?"
"Calm down son." "But dad this is unfair, how can you be making my life decisions without including me in it?"
"All this one you are saying is just for your village chief, can't you see Sultan and Sultana."
"But dad I am not Sultan." "Will you listen to me son?" He wanted to speak but nothing came out... "Who is she dad?"
"Nasreen Bature Sulyman." "You have got to be kidding me right.. dad, Nasreen!!!!"So guys what do you guys think? Nasreen and Irfan... hope you are enjoying the story... This is just the start of something new. Vote, comment, and share. I love you 💕💕💕
"Chabb!! daddy Irfan!! Irfan is it the Irfan that I just met that doesn't know how to laugh... Shikenan, Na shiga uku, ai ni gwara naje na fara Shan rubutu in sa a kawo mun gobe, bazan iya ba. I am finished dad, I am in trouble, it is better I go and start drinking rubutu, I'll have them bring it for me tomorrow I can't do this, Please reconsider dad." "If you would tell me one person now that is ready and willing to marry you, I swear I will grant your wish." Nasreen thought deeply of all the side guys she had and she couldnt come up with one, she called their names in her headFaisal ( Talks way too much)Adnan,( Very short, God fearing)Farouk,( Minister, Flirt)Alhaji Buba,( Billonaire, three wives, poor grammar)Farid( Former President's son, Very childish)Sarki,(So uncouth, wore the same clothe thrice in one week to visit her )Yusuf (Governor's son, un
She was seated on the bed cross-legged, with her head downcast. Her heart thumped the moment, Irfan stepped into the room. He said his salam quietly. Nasreen did not bother replying.Nasreen!! He called calmly again, she didn't raise her head upward. He thought she must be nervous. "Can we pray at least?" No response still."What is wrong with you Nasreen?" She looked at him with a dispirited expression on her face. When he saw the resigned expression on her face, he became gloomy at the thought of what he had to face, the agony of a bereft marriage. He tried to act as cool as possible. "Why did your mood swing suddenly, you were fine at the dinner party." He realized he was talking to himself, he got irked by her stern visage. He moved closer and touched her shoulder lightly, so she could at least look at him. She shrugged his hands away, Irfan froze. "Don't touch me," His b
"Nasreen wake up I am going to work, it is about time you start performing some of your wifely duties." "So what are the wifely duties if I may ask?" She mumbled. "You need to wake up and prepare me breakfast at least." 'Wait dude, are you serious right now?" "Does this face looks like it's joking?" He said curtly and stormed out of the room. She sat upright on her bed, and pondered about her life, how did she ever sign up for this.... She got up unwillingly and rummaged the kitchen and fridge. *****"Wai abincin bai yi tun azun ba, is the food not ready yet." He muttered in annoyance. Nasreen shot him a scornful glare, and he kept quiet. He was waiting on the dinning table, fixing his cuff links. When Nasreen presented the food that looked delectable to him. She smiled at him, but there was something behind that smile. It was creepy. She had never smiled at him like th
"IRFAAAN! TOWELLL!! KNOCK!!" Nasreen said stressing on each word. "NASREEN ! NO ONE CARES!! NO!!" He stressed the word just as she said to him too. She rolled her eyes and wrapped the towel securely, and crossed her arms on her chest. "What do you want form me?" "For you not to embarrass me in front of my friends." "Why do you assume that I would embarrass you?" Nasreen said curtly."Cause I invited my friends over to come and have dinner here, I remember the last time I forced you to cook it didn't turn out well, and I don't want to force you please." Irfan pleaded. Nasreen sniggered "So you know what I am capable of, interesting.""Look I don't care, just do this at least, for only today, please, we are going to do it together if that it what it takes." Irfan said pleadingly. "Oh you thought I was going to do it alone ah lallai." Irfan rolled his eyes skywards. Irfan turne
They had been avoiding each other since their first kiss. Or rather she had been avoiding him. It was still awkward for her. Irfan kept making her feel even more awkward than it already was. "Just say one more word again Irfan you will see what I am made of." "Don't you ever shut up in your life?" She gave him a very cold and serious look: "What the f*** did you just say to me? She said blandly. You think I like to talk, I just don't want to blow my freaking brains out, because of boredom. You are always, dorky, boring, and kuma sai ka daura fuskar ka kamar Zani .you will tie your face like wrapper a little smile would do you good." She stroked his shoulder and went upstairs. Leaving Irfan in a state of shock. "Damn it!!" How could she say such a thing to him. He looked at himself in the mirror. "I am not a bore." He called
"Irfan can you please keep it down I am trying to read." "If you want to read Nasreen, go to the library." He said and carried on with his movie. He had his AirPods on and was watching a movie on his Mac book, and was laughing loudly. She got up angrily and was walking towards him, she was about to yank the Air-pod away from him. When she felt it, she stood stock-still in front of Irfan deadpanned. Irfan saw his beautiful wife freeze in front of him."What is it Nasreen?" She couldn't speak, she looked down, and looked at him before she walked quickly aupstairs. His eyebrows creased in confusion. He shrugged his shoulders, he wanted to continue with his movie when his eyes caught the tiny trail of crimson spots trailed everywhere she ran through. He let out a smirk. This is the reason she ran away. Now he understood all the yelling, and aggression.Nasreen al
Nasreen was in a very good mood, today she was happy, and felt like dressing up for herself, and then Irfan. She shook her head, as she thought of how far they had come. Five months of marriage. She did not imagine a day like this to come that she would actually want to look good for Irfan. And now she could easily admit to herself that she had started falling for Irfan.******It was almost five pm, When she sat in front of her large dressing mirror, as she did the finishing touch of her flawless makeup. She smiled at her handiwork and mouthed perfect. She hurried down the stairs to check what she was baking in the oven. She wanted to surprise him by making one of his favorites deserts. She was surprised at her self, when she called Khaddy and asked her some stuff about Irfan. She wanted to make her marriage work wholeheartedly. She had discovered few things about Irfan she loved, the ones she could be patient with, and
"Hey Nas do you want to travel on a business trip with me?" Irfan asked."Awww I wish I could, but I don't want to." Nasreen replied.Irfan was speechless. "Seriously you don't want to travel to Maldives?" Nasreen's eyes bulged out. "You didn't say where Irfan." "You missed your chance." Nasreen blew out a tiring breath, and huffed. She folded her arms on her chest."I thought it is one of those your boring trips you take for a week.""Don't worry it is China karki damu.""How many days?" She asked. "About a month." "A month Irfan, that is so long." "Does that mean you are going to miss me?" He sat down close to her."May be I would, may be I wouldn't, when do you leave?" "Next tomorrow." "That is so soon." "Don't worry am just kidding it's only Ten days." "Still too long."
The sunlit clouds drifted across the clear blue sky, the whole landscape was bathed in the warm glow of the sun shimmering over the sea that glittered invitingly, The weather was as clear as a crystal, the breeze blew gently, Nasreen was exhilarated. As she breathed the fresh air of Bahamas from her lungs, gazing at the sea from their hotel room, in the paradise island. "Nice view babes, Irfan hugged her from behind, nibbling some words in her ears. She blushed gorgeously. "This is going to be one of the most memorable moments of my life Irfan, Just look at us, how did we get here?" "I don't know babes, we have come a long way, and i know it inside of my heart that i will always love you today tomorrow and always, only you, and even if we try to forget that, love will remind us, that
"Hey, guys here comes Ira and Najma from Tv."A kid said, and all the other kids turned to look at them."Yes, it's us," Ira said with confidence, this was her moment and she was going to let it shine, it was going to make her the coolest kid in sixth grade. She waved smilingly at all of the people looking and talking about them. It was all fine until Ira started feeling like the boss."Don't take pictures, and most importantly don't make eye contact. Ira said and put on Nasreen's shade. It is okay to feel jealous." It got so bad that the kids in lower grades had to get an eye permission slip from her friend Tiffany just to make eye contact with her they wan
Relationships aren't what happens when relationships are good. In some ways the bad times tell us who we are and who we want to be with. The bad times brought them together and they took it from there. She realized that she didn't want him to go, and then the next day came again and she still didn't want him to leave. "Yeah, I went over to see her and then the next day I realized that I still didn't want to go I wanted to be there every day, looking forward to everything that came through, big or small." He entwined their hands together. "And I wanted him there too, and I know we have a lot of work to do but we were choosing each other over any adversary and adversity." "That is very good, Masha Allah, Sometimes we get comfortable in our lives and we forget to do the work, think of your marriage like, what is Irfan's favorite dessert?" "Angel
"Babes!!" He said. Nasreen walked up to him and engulfed him in a warm hug, she wept hard, Irfan rubbed her back soothingly. "It's alright Nasreen." He said calmly."Ha...beee...bb!!" Nasreen stuttered. "What about Habeeb, oh my God did he hurt you?" He pulled apart the hug and scanned her appearance, checking every part of her body."Don't worry Irfan, he didn't hurt me, he is gone for good." "Its alright babe, everything is going to be alright." He placed her head back on his hard chest, and Nasreen continued crying. "Stop crying Nas." He too cried a little. Rubbing her back soothingly.********"Hafeez where is your friend Nabeel?" Muhsin asked. "They have come to pick him up already." "Seriously, did you happen to see who came to pick him?" "No, i didn't, miss Debra only took him out of the class." "Okay then lets go home." H
Nasreen was about to pull over, when she saw a silhouette from afar that looked like Muhsin, he was walking with Amani, she was so sure that it was Amani, but she wasn't sure if it was Muhsin, they both came out from a corner of the street, and Amani was walking lethargically, the man had to hold her for support. She decided to call him to be sure, so she dialed his number, she was still looking at them, to see if he would pick up his phone but he didn't. They had reached the far end of the street, where she couldn't sight them anymore.A curious Nasreen, came down from her car, and went to the corner where they emerged from, it was a tatty and dingy place she wondered if people lived here, wondering what Amani was doing there.A girl of about eighteen walked pass her, she walked as if she didn't have blood in her body. Nasreen saw that she wanted to fall, so she gripped her protectively
1986Lagos the city of hustle, it is always depicted to be a place of hustle bustle. If you no fit wise for lagos you no fit wise for anywhere', Shine your eyes oo' , Eko oni baje o' ...And all the rest slogans you would hear when you arrived in lagos. There was no difference between the day and night, every where was always full with the bestir of people from different walks of life hustling to meet their daily needs. But to Hajara it was a beautiful and peaceful environment, compared to Kano where she had come from, as a new bride, she got married to the one and only man she had eyes on since the very first day she met him. Likewise him, it was love at first sight, she was in her first year in polytechnic, while he was in his final year. They bumped into each other, making her book fall on the floor, he bent down to help pick it up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~It is said that if your face is swollen from the severe beatings of life, smile and pretend to be a fat man. And that was exactly what she was doing, she was trying her best to be normal again, Irfan had cut her deeper than she could ever imagine.As the blurred days crept into one another. She grasped for thoughts, or things she would do to take her mind off him, but instead her heart kept crumbling over and over again. It had been two weeks since the incident, marking it one month since she moved out of the house. Irfan had come thrice but she refused to let him in. He had tried every means he knew, but still, she won't even look at his face. He dare not call his father or brother, or even Imran, what would he say to them, so he decided to call the one person that would understand and listen to him. He dialled her number. "ya Sakinah please I need you right
She had been feeling queasy for days now, she thought it was because she was stressed though. She sat on the bed leg crossed with the second bowl of prawn crackers. crunching it hungrily.She had even forgotten she took a test, until she picked the remote from the bed side drawer, and the kit fell on the floor.She picked it kit up, and the result stared back at her. The plus sign was so prominent, she was definitely pregnant.She looked at carefully again, in utter disbelief, though she had an idea of what was wrong with her, but it was strange now.She kept it aside and placed her hand on her flat tummy. She didn't even know what to do, she definitely didn't see that one coming.Wow pregnant Nasreen.. Are you thinking of raising this child alone? I know you can, but the child would need his father someday, are you going to continue be
"Amani the way you are smiling like this, it is like everything went well." Habeeb said scanning her appearance."S.O.D!!(son of the devil) Amani teased him. How did you come up with such a smart plan, I never thought it would work, only seen it in movies." "I don't know, it just hit me, and I have always been a smarty pants, or may be a should movie producer don't ya think?""Yes that would be better than doing nothing all day." "Who says I am doing noting all day?" He whispered in her ear and without any warning he captured his lips on her lips.Amani was taken aback by his swift force, she could do nothing order than respond to the splendor of the kisses, and in one swift movement he lifted her up and took her straight to his bed.******When they arrived at the pent house, they met the two security guards. "Aha me kuke yi anan. What
