Ember
I woke up in my bed and in my nightgown. I was wondering if it was all a dream, but a "good morning, love" from behind me on my bed made me jump out of bed fast and turn around. There was Ryder, just sitting on my bed like it was the easiest thing for him. I was about to make a break to get to my mom's room but he was fast, and was blocking the door before I could get to it.
" Now why would you go and wake up that beautiful lady?" , he asked. He held a finger to his mouth in a hushed manner, and cracked open the door to mom's room. She was indeed sleeping, and there was a woman inside of there with a white doctor's robe on. She smiled and nodded one to me, before attending to my mother.
Ryder pulled me back into my room.
" What do you want with me?". "Who is that woman in my mother's room?". " How the hell do you even know where I live?". I asked. The questions seemed to tumble out at once. I had backed into one corner of my room and he leaned against my dresser. He was wearing a black shirt, with some denim jeans, with black and red Jordans.
" I have a proposition for you. As for the woman, she is a personal doctor of mine, and is now charged with overseeing your mother's condition, per my instructions. As for where you live, I'm a pretty powerful man. Finding you was easier than finding my lost watch. You should make your tracks more easily covered. You never know what could be hunting you", he said with a smirk. It didn't escape my notice that he said 'what', rather than who' and it sent a chill down my spine.
" Give me one good reason I shouldn't report you to the police" I told him. " Breaking and entering is a crime", I told him and he laughed a bit loud at that before pulling out his gun and setting it on the table. The fear of dying came back, so I decided to tread carefully. He saw the fear in my eyes. It was a threat.
" All of the cops here and under my payroll. None of them would listen to you, though they would probably believe you", he said.
" So what, your some mafia crime boss or something" , I asked.
" Something like that", he said.
" That still does not answer my question. What do you WANT with me?,' I asked him, eyeing his gun, then back to him. If he wanted to kill me, he would have shot me last night. With that thought, I moved from my corner and crossed my arms, leaning on the wall. He followed my every motion.
" Ember Maze. 20 years old. Dead father. Parapalegic mother. Going to culinary school to train to be a top chef, which was paid for two years by daddy's money before he died. I imagine that's why you were working at that cafe. To save money? Daddy only paid for two years and you've been paying the bills with his life insurance money. School starts next month for you, and you barely have just enough for a semester. Tell me if I am missing anything" he said. I stayed silent. Just who the hell is this guy? He smiled.
" My proposition to you is simple. You saw me commit murder last night, and I need you silent, which means, I need you in my sight 24/7. I'm offering you the chance to pay for the remainder two years of your school and take care of your mother, as long as you play by my rules." , he said, uncrossing his arms. The wheels were turning in my head. He couldn't be serious.
" And what on earth would I have to do in return," I asked him. I was no whore.
" Simple. You will come, every morning, to my mansion at 10am, and train my chefs. This surprised me as I was not expecting that.
" You want me to..... teach your chef's how to cook? " , I asked him slowly. Just to make sure I heard it right.
" That's correct. The chef's there. You could say they are apart of my extended family, so I don't want them fired. I want them trained, and after they are trained, I want you to lead them as part of your job. You will be paid, handsomely, of course. Money is no object to me," he said.
" You haven't even tasted my cooking. How do you even know if I am the chef you are looking for?" , I asked. He looked serious.
" Because if you aren't, then I will have to finish the job I started last night, he said , motioning his head to the gun.
" So work for you and get my shit paid, or die. Those are my choices?", I asked. He nodded to me. Even with all of this bizarreness, I was putting together pieces in my head. This could be the best thing for me. I could have school paid for, my mother taken care of, and make more money in the process of doing what I love. He was offering me a golden ticket.
" How do I know this is forreal, and not some sick game you've concocted to torture then kill me?" I asked him.
" Call your school. Ask about your balance", he said , tossing me my phone. Not taking my eyes off him, I called my school and they told me the remainder of two years had been paid in full earlier this morning. Well shit. He put his gun back into his belt and walked to me. His presence close to me as I looked in his brown eyes was not threatening, but I still knew he was a dangerous man. He brushed a piece of my hair off of my face.
" Believe me when I say, I don't want to hurt you Ember. Work for me. I'm offering you a chance to make your life better than before. If you don't do it for me, then do it for your mother", he said sweetly, before tucking my hair behind my ear. I stood frozen, unmoving. Not sure what to do. He grinned then walked to the door, before turning around.
" I'd hate to see anything happen to her. I'm sure you will make the best decision." he said menacingly , before leaving completely. I let go the breath of air I hadn't realized I was holding. Did that really just fucking happen? I received a text on my phone from Ryder. The fucker put his name on my phone.
Come tomorrow to 113 Brownsville road for your new job. Be here by 9.45. Don't be late, love.
Ryder.
I went to my mother's room. She was just waking up and was looking confused at the woman in there.
" Who the hell are you?" , she asked the lady.
" My name is Doctor Charli Hanes, but you may call me Charli ma'am" she said, looking at the tubes connected to my mother. I spoke before my mother had a fit.
" Mom, I got a new job as a cook for a job I applied for a few weeks ago. I didn't want to tell you if I didn't get it. Apart from the new job comes with the last two years of school being paid off , as well as your fees. They are paying me to teach their cooks how to better manage the kitchen, and then I will be leading them", I told her, coming to sit beside her. She was shocked.
" Are you serious, Ember? Oh my God, that is amazing,' she said , almost in tears. She hugged me tight. I did my best to put on my bravest face as I felt like I could break down at any moment.
" Oh, your father would be so proud of you. I know I am. You're destined for great things , my little fire Ember. I just know it." she said. A clip on the TV came from the news about a wolf being spotted and breaking into people's homes. I kissed her head and went back to my room, shutting the door. I allowed myself to finally process everything and somehow I just ended up in tears. Charli knocked on my door a little later, letting me know she was heading out to go home.
" I will be here every day at 9am, so you just focus on yourself and your job. She will be well taken care of Ember" she said behind the door. I heard her leave. This was the start of everything, and if I had known what was coming soon, it probably would have been mercy to have him just kill me on the spot.
EmberI keep thinking back to that day. One year ago, today, the events with Ryder that changed my life happened. Ryder kept all of his promises. Charli came by faithfully every day to monitor my mother. They had gotten really close over the last year and I was glad my mother had someone she could bond with. Her relationship with Rosalee was strained already. As commanded, I trained his staff and now I was leading them. I got to know more about Ryder as time went on. His family controlled every part of northern Florida, and their main location was in Tallahassee. He told me that he was raised to lead his family in this lifestyle, and that he had no choice. I almost felt sorry for him. Ryder lived in a huge mansion. It was a beautiful, all-white, three-story mansion trimmed with blue. There were apartments nearby, where he said some of his extended family lived. At least the ones who didn't want to live in the mansion. When I had first arrived, everyone looked at me as if they had seen
EmberThe dream I had that night was sort of foggy. I saw my mother. She was walking towards a light. In that light, I could see my father's face."Mom" I called out. She reached dad and then turned around and looked at me, emotionless. A tear fell down her face though, and dad reached out of the light to wipe it off." Run Ember. Run as far and as fast as you can. Go to Miami. He will not follow you there" , my mom said before stepping into the light with my dad and the light faded. I was soon in utter darkness and I heard a voice behind me in Ryder's voice."Look what you made me do!", his voice said before I was grabbed from behind and then I woke up in a sweat. Mom. My first thought was, I needed to get to my mother. As soon as I hopped out of bed, I ran to the door and swung it open. Ryder was on the other side of it with some flowers. I didn't have time for him right now, as I pushed past him." Move Ryder, I need to get to my mother", I said. His bodyguards were blocking my way
"I guess this is the part of the story where I come in", I tell the camera. "Like Ember, I'll also take you back to the beginning. Seth and I's beginning. I think you will understand more about just how complicated things were when Ember came into the fold." Carter MoonstoneI could feel my wolf stir. Something was up. I only wish sometimes I was able to talk to it, but that was a thing of fantasy books. In reality, our beasts are just an extension of us. We control our beasts, but sometimes it does feel like they have a mind of their own. I guess that's just our wolf nature. Let me give you more insight into who we are. My best friend, Seth Lightwood and I, were currently going over paperwork for our pack. We are both alphas of the Woodstone pack, just as we are co-owners of the number one restaurant in all Florida, Moonlight. Yes, you heard that right. Co-alphas and co-managers. Crazy, right? I know that when you read in fantasy novels, typically, a pack only has one alpha, and t
"You can't really tell our story, Carter, without them hearing my side as well", I told Carter, sitting beside him. He laughed and rose up from his seat."By all means, continue where I left off", he said. "I'm going to find Ember anyway. Think I'll steal a kiss or two from her", he said to me, laughing before leaving the room."Tell her to save some for me too asshole", I yelled back before he disappeared around the corner."My best friend in life is a menace to society sometimes", I tell the camera. "Ember wanted our story to be known for generations to come and we, of course, are a big part of that story. Let me tell you a bit about myself. "Seth LightwoodIt was a sunny day in Miami, Florida. The days here were always sunny, and I loved them. Carter loved it when it rained though. One of the smaller things we disagreed on. I know he told you about our friendship. We really did share everything together, growing up. We were always mistaken for brothers because of it, though we loo
Ember I was far enough into Miami to be able to take a pause now. I parked behind a Walmart I saw, far away from any other people. I was alone. My mom was dead at the very hands of my boyfriend. He must have been a real menace, the way her body was in pieces like that. All the blood. The fucking blood. I put my hands and head on the steering wheel. I should never have accepted that damn job in the first place. I probably would have been killed, but it is a hell of a lot better than seeing my mother's body in pieces. No one should have to see that. I know Ryder would be looking to blame me for all of this. I know his ways. Blame others for the love he cost. The reason I was so attracted to him at one point, I will never know. My heart is so broken. Fucking broken, but now is not the time for mourning. My mom didn't raise a weak bitch who cried around all day. I will mourn her when I get that chance, but first things first. I need to find a home. I took the phone Lamonte gave me and
Ember It was a Sunday morning. The sounds of the city were loud, but I was used to that already. I had only been here one week and had gotten the apartment settled to my liking. I went shopping yesterday for new clothes for every occasion I may need. I also bought a laptop and created a new email address. Tomorrow morning, I will be going in for a interview at the Moonlight restaurant. I did some research on the restaurant and was very surprised by what I had seen. This restaurant was definitely unlike anything I had ever seen, I thought, as I looked at the photos of it. It was huge and painted all white with red trim. I didn't see any photos on the inside. I assumed maybe this was one of those fantasy restaurants that took your cellphones at the door to keep it exclusive.I looked up the owners of the restaurant out of pure curiosity and came across two of the most handsome men I had ever seen. Good Lord. He sure did take his time when he created these men. They were both wearing e
Ember Carter was the one who took my hand and shook it. I was honestly kind of scared to look him in the eye, but I wanted to be direct. The goal was still to be impressive and leave a lasting impression. I could have sworn when he touched me, it was like a jolt of electricity going right through me. It was almost exhilarating. He smiled at me, and I felt as shy as ever, though shy was not my personality. Who was this guy? " My name is Carter Moonstone. This is my partner, Seth Lightwood", he explained. We didn't even realize we were still shaking each other's hands. It was like neither of us wanted to pull away. "Ahem. We don't have all day, Miss Stanford", Seth said. His tone was grumpy, deep, and somehow still sexy. Carter let go of my hand and found his seat next to Seth. I sat down in my chair and pushed my portfolio at them. Seth just eyed me before finally taking the file and scanning it. I looked at Carter. I felt like I would get further with him, but a part of me wanted t
EmberIt had been four days since I had the interview. It was heading into the weekend now. I had heard nothing back from anyone. My eyes went back and forth to the slip of paper on the table. The one with Carter's number on it. Should I call him? No. Better to leave it alone and let them call first. Calling too much could make me sound desperate, and with men such as themselves, desperate would sound weak. I had been researching other restaurants in the area that I could apply for, although I really wanted to work at Moonlight. Something about it called to me. I was never one to believe in destiny, but if I did, I just knew that Moonlight was it. What I would lead that high class restraint as a top chef, leading my own chefs into the battle of cooking. I was a natural leader. Something that came easy to me once I trained Ryder's chefs. Leading people was also another skill I had possessed. My thoughts ate at me. Had I really not made a great impression? I know my resume was fake, bu
Ember to the Camera in Present Time. "You guys really did outdue yourselves on my gift", I told my mates while turning off the camera for a moment. It was getting a little hot from being on so long. Two of my mates sat on each side as we all told our story. " You would have been surprised earlier if it was not for Jordan making you tired", Damien said, smirking at Jordan. Jordan threw his hands up. " Hey, you all had her alone before I could as well. Fair is fair", he said, winking at me before kissing me on the head. "That is true", Seth said, in agreement. "Lets finish the story", Carter said, positioning the camera."And so we shall", I replied before turning the camera back on. Seth Jordan's task was to keep Ember busy for the morning while we gathered Ember's surprise together. She wanted to spend today with Carter and I to celebrate our birthday, but neither Carter nor I cared about that. All we wanted to do was please our mate, as we had come to realize now. She deserved
Ember Since my mates were all currently busy, I decided to take advantage of the moment I was given with Jordan. It was very minimal that I had time to spend with them individually as the rest of them craved my attention as well. I spent time alone with all of them, except Jordan, yet he never complained about it at all. This is what I was thinking as I gazed up at him. He looked back down at me, with his green eyes full of so much love and admiration. I pulled him into a kiss, and his response was quick. Feeling his emotions through the bond, I know he too craved one on one time with me as well. He then pulled back from me. "Are you sure, Ember?", he asked me, wanting reassurance. It was only three days ago we had been through the biggest battle of our life, and yet, rather than still being shaken up about it, I not only still had my mates, but all enemies to our bond and pack were now dead. The hardest part was over. I felt peace now, and all I wanted at that moment was to enjoy t
Jordan (Three Days Later)The days passed by quickly and soon we were saying goodbye to all the species. Cole and Mia were about to leave to go back home to the Black Alder Pack land. They both stayed over to be sure everything was over with and would go back to normal after the battle with War. "You have one lucky mate, Jordan. She reminds me of our Luna, Elena.", Cole said, while watching Mia speak with Ember. With the future looking bright, so was she, as her red hair seemed to almost glow brighter in the sun. She looked at me and I could feel the wave of her happiness shining on me just as bright as the day."How so?" I asked him. "She, too, was blessed by Selene with powers. She is also a Lycan. Her sons, Aiden and Ethan, are born lycans as well. Your mate turned the four of you into lycans by her blood alone. That is very remarkable. I am sure Elena will be happy to know our pack is not the only ones that hold them." he said. "Send her contact information over to us. I am sur
Ember War held out his ring to me, using its power to keep me in place. "You've lost" he said before laughing. Using my power, I blasted him away from me by screaming. He was sent flying through the mansion and into the garden. My heart was broken. My mate-bond was destroyed. My life is finally ruined. My mates......My mates....."FUCK", I screamed again, as he stood back up quickly only to be sent flying though more walls of the mansion. He phased and ended up behind me punching me in the back. I was sent flying onto the table. "Stop fighting , Ember. You have nothing left", he said, waving his hand. I was knocked into the fridge before he dropped me on the floor. I looked up at him and tried screaming again to send another blast of power at him, but he waved his hand. I could no longer make out any sound. I could not speak. He raised his ring, holding me in place. My body was sore from being tossed around like a rag doll. "Your mates had hidden their entire pack from me, somehow
Carter Fuck! I growled in the family link. We were all feeling the impact of Jordan's death strongly and the entire pack was unrestful. Seth was controlling them. Damien was missing. He cut himself off from the pack link to go and find Ember, who is now possessed by War. We feared the loss of Jordan would unhinge him, and he would kill Ember. We could no longer feel her. It was as if she disappeared completely. "How did you all come back?" I asked mom. She was sitting beside dad with a bag of ice on her head. Jax and Agatha had the same thing to theirs as they complained of a severe head banging pain they were experiencing when they were released from the pain. Ivy was sitting next to Jax, comforting him. "Honestly, I am not sure. I remember fighting Jor...." she started before choking up. She couldn't even form full sentences. " It was dark and cold. We felt like spectators in our own bodies. I called out to you boys, hoping you all would hear me, but I didn't feel you at all. Ins
Ember I woke up with someone shaking me. "Ember. Ember, wake up", the deep voice said. My eyes shot open, only to see War standing above me. I shoved him away from me. "Get away from me", I screamed at him, but my powers did not work. I could not feel my power at all, or my mates. War backed away and raised his hands. "Hey. It's okay, love. I'm not War. I'm Ryder. We are stuck in his realm", War said. I looked closely at War. This was another trick. I stood up. "That's bullshit.", I told him and looked around. The ground beneath me was charred as if burned. Smoke rose from it. There were a few trees were burnt. You could see nothing but skulls on the smoky ground. "Where am I, War? What have you done?", I asked him. The memory of me stabbing Jordan came into my mind. I sunk to my knees. "Jordan", I cried out. I was not sure what happened, or how I even allowed War to enter me. I remember making my way back to my mates as they were fighting war, but War somehow made Agatha, Jess
Seth The smell of blood and the sounds of gunshots filled the air as we were fighting War and his demon army. Even with our combined power and fighting abilities, war was still able to keep up with all four of us in every direction. It was like he would know exactly just where one was coming for an attack and would move swiftly out of the way before we could strike. He was now the focus of the four of us as our pack and allies kept his army away from the five of us. "Did you think I did not know you would come for her?", he taunted, slapping Carter's Lycan wolf. He smashed against a tree but was back on his feet in an instant. " You will never have our mate," Damien growled at him from behind as he struck, but War dodged his attack and kicked him, sending him crashing into the mansion of the packhouse. It was the ring. It had to be the ring. How else would he know where all of our moves were going to be? We had planned to leave Ember out of this fight. Just grab her and get her out
(The night of the Blue Moon)Carter The moon sat high in the sky as it took its place. Werewolves everywhere were getting ready to mate or find a possible chosen one, not knowing that the events we face tonight could impact them, should we fail. Howls echoed through the night as we prepared to advance into Tallahassee territory. Seth and I led the front lines. Mom, Dad, Agatha and Jordan lead each of the sidelines. Cole, Mia, and Jax lead their teams behind us to take on the second wave of enemies. Damien is tasked with grabbing Ember. We figured she would be heavily guarded, but with Damien's power, he could have her out in no time. Our job was to clear a path for everyone else. After doing so, Damien, Seth, Jordan and I would head straight for War. Mom, Dad, and Agatha would lead their teams against the third wave of the hell army as we fought War. We made sure to block off all main roads, so humans would not witness what was about to unfold tonight. Before we left, everyone turned
Jordan Three weeks. Three weeks since, we had seen a glimpse of Ember's beautiful face. She told us in our link not to come for her, or she would pay the price. Of course, being her mates, we attempted to come for her, but were blocked off by hundreds of Wars soldiers blocking the border. We could have killed our way through them easily, but not at the risk of Ember getting hurt again. We lost communication with her right as she said he was putting the bracelet back on her. The blue moon was less than seventy-two hours away. Many of the allied shifters from Black Diamond agreed to fight with us to not only get our mate back but defeat an enemy that seeks to destroy us all. We were bringing War, to War, and taking our mate back in the process. We could only hope she knew what she was doing. A phone call came through from an old business partner of mine, Roland Black, Alpha of the Black Alder packhouse in South Carolina, to discuss the plan. He, too, had heard of the coming war, and h
