A good day.

We hiked on, discussing our plans for building gardens up here and how we wanted to develop a seed program around native plants of the area. We thought it might be a way to earn a living as well as do something valuable to the earth. Liam pointed out various plants he thought we could incorporate into our program, and I appreciated once again how he had been able to pivot from the plans we’d had before to the ones we were building now.

“Maybe it was the stress we were under?” Liam posited. “Maybe that was why we were ready to be together?”

“Doubtful.” I bent to rub my fingers over a low-growing shrub to release its scent. “We’d been under that stress for months before we came up here. Don’t you think it might have been our wolves? They might have gotten tired of our hesitation.”

“Had yours ever pushed you in any way to speak out? To act on your feelings?”

I considered as we came to the top of the trail above the lake and began a switchback down to a high meadow. “No, actually I don’t think he has. If we never know the answer, will you be okay not knowing?”

“Probably. I mean, we’ll have to, won’t we?” The view was obscured by some fog that also swirled around our feet, meaning, we had to pay serious attention to where we placed our feet on the narrow trail. “This is fun.”

“No, it’s not.” Liam continued, sliding one foot in front of the other. “But it’s necessary. I was thinking that we might be able to make some real contributions to the pack with our garden. Food for all as well as a business that could help support us.”

“Yes, that’s the…hey!”

Pebbles showered around us and my feet skidded, one shooting over the edge of the trail.

“What’s going on?” Liam grabbed my arm just in time to keep me from falling at least to the next section of trail and maybe a lot farther. He tilted his head back, trying to see past through the fog above us. We were maybe halfway down, so there were several levels that could have generated the mini avalanche. “Who’s up there?”

Mia

“Who’s up there?” The words carried through the fog that masked the switchback trail I followed. It was just wide enough for maybe two people to walk side by side and had no comforting stone wall or fence, of course. Up here, there were no construction crews making things safe for klutzy tourists.

Oh hell. All my care in hanging back had been lost just because I stumbled and disturbed a few small rocks. The lovers from the night before were going in the same direction I was, a fact I’d figured out as soon as I rejoined the main trail. I was still of the opinion that not being discovered was a good plan. I wanted to run to catch up, apologize, and ask if they’d mind if I traveled with them, but that desire was totally silly.

They might even be on their honeymoon for all I knew. They’d certainly behaved as if they were. Confused by the whole experience, I stopped walking and pressed back against the rock wall. They couldn’t see me, anyway, not with all the thick fog, but somehow I still wanted to hide.

“We know you’re there,” came the other man’s voice. “And it’s okay, but can you please be careful? Those rocks hurt.”

I hurt them. Courtesy instilled in me by my mother when I was just a little girl forced the words, “I’m sorry. I’ll be careful,” from my lips.Damn.

“Aha! I knew I heard someone. Come down here and join us. That way you won’t be kicking pebbles over onto us.” The first man again.

“I still might kick rocks.”

“But you’ll be right here, and we won’t get a concussion.”

“That’s all right. I’ll stay put until you’re off the switchbacks.” I didn’t want to interrupt their romantic trip, and also, I totally did.

Mates.

Yes, we know they’re mates. What I don’t know is why I’m interested even though they are. I need to keep my distance.

Mates!

She was hopeless. My wolf seemed to be in love with love, enthralled with the romance between two people who would certainly not want us butting in where we had no business.

“I really think you should come down and join us.”

I screeched because this time, it was man number two, the one with less scruff, and he was standing directly beside me. “How did you get here?”

He grinned. “I walked up while you and my mate were shouting at one another. Come on down and join us. It will be safer for our heads and we can keep you from falling to your death.”

“Why would I do that? I’m like a mountain goat.” I tossed my head, less like a mountain goat and more like…maybe a dairy cow.

“Uh-huh. Then explain why your heel is even now hovering over oblivion?”

“I’m not…oh goddess!” I jumped away from the edge. “Just a minute ago I was by the wall. I don’t know what happened.”

“It’s the way this trail is. We’ve been on it a few times, going home for visits, and it’s got some weird twists. Just come walk with us.”

“Where is home?” I was starting to think I knew.

“Triple L Ranch. Have you heard of it?” He closed his hand over my elbow and was guiding me along while he spoke. “It’s about a day and a half away by foot.”

“Uh, yeah. To tell you the truth, that’s where I’m going. I was hoping to ask the alphas…never mind.”

“Ask the alphas what?” We rounded a curve and continued on the level below the one I’d been standing on while 98 percent of my attention was focused on the spot on my arm where he was touching me. It was through several layers of sweatshirts, but I could feel the heat anyway.

“Nothing. Where are you guys traveling from?”

“It’s a long story, but we’ve been away for a long time. We were both born at Triple L.”

“I hear it’s a good place to be.”

“Very good.” The other man came into sight. “Were you visiting someone?”

“No.” I didn’t see any reason to explain to them. “But I don’t mind walking with you two for a while if I’m not in the way.”

“It’s fine.” But nothing about his tone meant that. “I’m Liam and you’ve already met my…mate, Levi.”

Why the hesitation? “Not formally. I’m Mia and I promise to be careful and not to let any more rocks fall on you. Just go ahead and I will stand stock-still until you holler up that you’re not beneath me any longer.” Why on earth did that sound so naughty? “I mean until you get to the bottom of the switchbacks.”

“I don’t think so.” The man who’d led me down here shook his head. “Come on, Mia . Why are you headed to the ranch? You said you wanted to ask the alphas something?”

I didn’t want to tell him, but if I didn’t and then they saw me there, they might say something to the alphas about what a rude bitch I’d been and then he’d reject my request and I’d be on the trail with nowhere to go.

My former alpha had probably already stripped my home of all valuables, for what they were worth, and I couldn’t go back there anyway. If Triple L said no to my suit, I’d ask if there was another pack around that might accept me.

“I’m also going to Triple L to…to…” I sucked in a deep breath for courage. Maybe if these two liked me okay, they’d put in a good word. “I need a place to live.”

Jessica eyes widened, and Liam studied me as if he had never seen a specimen like me before. What were they thinking? Neither said a word, and finally I had to break the silence.

“Do you think they’ll accept me? I don’t mind working hard.”

Liam responded. “Luke and Tal are the best. As I told you, we’ve been away a long time, so we don’t know precisely what the pack policies are about new members, but we know that they will hear you out at least.” He looked at the other man who nodded. “Listen, it’s not good to be alone up here by yourself. You never know who you’ll run into.”

“I sensed that,” I told him. “But I don’t want to be any bother.”

“You won’t be.” Jessica offered me a wry smile. “And how do you think our alphas would react if we said we ran into a female on her way here and left her alone on the trail?”

“It doesn’t even make sense not to walk together,” Liam added.

“I can take of myself,” I protested. “But I appreciate the offer.”

Jessica shook his head. “Okay, we’re gonna have to come clean. If we walk away and leave you on the trail to make your way through fog and the storm we think is going to hit tonight, it’s not Luke and Tal we’ll be afraid to face.”

“No,” his mate finished for him. “It’s the alpha female, Analise. We’re born to the pack but we’d probably be thrown out. So, let’s stop the discussion that’s just going to keep us from getting home, and start walking.”

“Did you say there was going to be a storm?”

Liam pointed to the sky. “Beyond that fog are some nasty-looking clouds. We won’t get there tonight, no matter what we do, but the closer the better. There are some shelters just off the trail if we can get close enough.”

They’d presented some strong arguments, so I stopped arguing and started walking. Once we got to Triple L, I probably wouldn’t see them much and therefore wouldn’t have to listen to my wolf chanting, mate, mate, mate.

Liam My wolf was remarkably pleased to have the female join us. I supposed that was because he liked to be around as much pack as possible, and he seemed to regard Mia as a pack member. She hadn’t been accepted yet, but it was probably going to happen. According to our new traveling companion, she had skills that would be valuable to us. Baking was always popular, but working with poultry was a good thing. Also, she could weave a bit, and I knew old Helga was dying for someone to help her with that.A bigger worry was the look of the sky. As soon as we’d gotten off the switchbacks, we also left the fog behind, and the overhead picture was that of clouds pregnant with snow. Something the pack would welcome because we needed the snowpack of winter to grow crops in the spring and summer. There had been so little for so long. But we were not anywhere near where we wanted to be—where there were a few scattered travel shelters we could have holed up in, meaning, we were going to have to ca

“But how?” she whispered. “We were…we were in our fur and sleeping, and now…did you make this happen?”Now I did roll, onto my back, wanting to be prepared to catch her before she fled into the cold and maybe suffered some kind of harm. Outside the tent, the wind was still high and slashing the branches above us. Despite the thick, interwoven canopy, snow had piled upon the tent again, and I’d have to push it off soon. But not quite yet.“No, we didn’t. We wouldn’t have any idea how to do that—or that it was even possible until it happened to us last night. When we get to Triple L, we’ll see if anyone else has more information.”“But you’re safe with us.” Liam laid his head on my shoulder and offered her a smile. “We offered you protection and shelter, and we’d never violate that.”“Good to know.” She sounded just a little snarky, and I liked her even more for it. “Because I’m feeling a little vulnerable here.”“Of course you are.” Taking a chance, I slipped an arm over her shoulders

Shh, some of us are sleeping! The feminine mind voice was not Dan nor was it mine. We hadn’t even mated her yet, and she could hear us? Speak to us? When did that happen? What kind of a mating was this? Her eyes opened, wide, startled, and beautiful. It could be the best kind.“Why are you both making so much noise? Has the snow stopped?”“No.” Dan smiled down at her. “We’re sorry to disturb you. We were just wondering if you thought it was odd that we’re all so comfortable together.”Comfortable might be a bad choice of words. My cock was stiff and weeping with pre-cum, and, under the thigh I’d tossed over Dan, his dick throbbed with life. No, not comfortable. But right. “It’s just right.” That described it. “Mia, did they have any matings in your old pack with more than two people?”She blinked, clearly startled, and pulled back, but Dan stroked her shoulder and she settled back in. “More than two? No. Wait, I have heard about your alphas and their mate. Is that common at the Triple

I leaned across Mia to kiss Dan, brushing her lips on my way back. She was warm and curvy and sweet, and her kisses were somehow all those things, too. I trailed my lips down her throat and hesitated there, casting a quick glance at Dan. He nodded and gave up nibbling her ear to press his lips to the opposite side of her neck.“We want to mark you,” I murmured and she sighed and tossed her head back.“Yes, please.” She whimpered when our teeth pierced her skin, two tears running down her cheeks. It hurt, I knew it did, but once we licked away the blood, the skin healed quickly. And the pain should fade right away, but I hated that she had the least bit of hurt at our hands. From that point, we continued dropping kisses over her skin, suckling her nipples and dipping between her legs to taste her juices. Then we kissed each other, sharing them before gliding back up her body where Dan lay between her legs. He stroked her until she writhed and begged, before fitting himself to her openi

Life on the Triple L Ranch was good. Better than good, it was paradise. My former pack treated its females poorly, as breeders and waitresses, servants to their males. Which was a lot of the reason I left. That and the fact that my stepmother was getting me out of her hair by marrying me off to someone I wanted no part of.I ran from my wedding with no idea where I was going or what I would do when I got there, but when I did, I found myself in the arms of the two alphas of the Triple L Ranch. Tal and Lukky were everything I could have dreamed of and were my fateds. But when I escaped in full bridal regalia, I did not know that I was running toward my fated mates. I was running away from the arranged marriage to someone I had no interest in spending an afternoon with, much less the rest of my life. But sometimes, Fate is kind, and I’d learned that not all males were arrogant bastards who wanted nothing but power and control and had no empathy whatsoever. My mates, who had been a happy

Dan was nowhere to be seen. But that was just as well. After the way we’d last parted, I didn’t want his negativity to ruin our send-off. Or upset anyone else either in my party or those who were so graciously bidding them farewell and telling them to have the best time ever. This trip had become less about a last single hurrah and more about thinking time for me.We shifted, helping one another with the harnesses to be sure we would be comfortable doing it along the route, and bounded away up the trail west. The ocean called, and the Triple L Ranch would be waiting when we returned. At the entrance to the pass, we stopped and looked back. Triple L lay stretched out below us, its pastures and woodlands stretching as far I could see. It was a beautiful place. My heart swelled with love for my home and pack mates, but right before I turned toward the west again, I caught site of one figure standing alone in the spot we’d said goodbye to everyone. I didn’t need anyone to tell me who he w

Sometimes I wondered why my mate even put up with me when I got this way. He deserved someone better, someone who understood his responsibilities and supported him unconditionally when—Beep! Beep!I flew to the window to see the Wrangler parked out in front. My mate was waving to me, and I grabbed two duffles and ran to toss them into the back of the car. “You took off the soft top,” I cheered. “Now I know we’re on vacation.”“If my wearing a Hawaiian shirt doesn’t do it, I guess the top off will?” He climbed out and came around to take the bags from me.“I didn’t even notice.” I’d been too excited that he was back. “But where did you get that thing?” It was a peach background with orange and blue birds of paradise all over it. “It looks vintage.” As in…worn a lot, well-loved.“Sam made me take it when I stopped by to make sure his leaky water heater had been taken care of before we go.” Sam was one of the oldest in the pack, and we all helped him out. We camped near an overlook, a jutting flat rock from which we could see the ocean below and in the distance. Just a sparkle, really, with the sun settling into it like a plump golden apricot. We cooked up some of the dehydrated meals over a small fire while planning our descent in the morning. “We’ll be at the beach before noon,” Lily said, her spoon scraping the last of the chili mac from her tin plate. Or maybe it wasn’t tin but some kind of metal camping plate anyway. “If we check into the motel right away, we can change and go for a swim.”“Or lunch.” Vivi wrinkled her nose, looking much like the animal she was named after. I’d wondered whether she’d done that as a baby right away, leading her mother to pick her name. “I would like something not raw and furry or barely rehydrated please. Maybe a shrimp salad or shrimp scampi or a shrimp cocktail.”“I’m sensing a theme here,” Lana said, rummaging through her pack. “I don’t have any shrimp, but I did bring this.” She held a bottle o

Mom is still pissed off?” I asked him, and he sighed before nodding.“I think you really pushed her too far this time, Mia. Mom has banned me from seeing you and says she doesn’t want me to become corrupt like you.” His words stung, but I knew it wasn’t his intention.“Maybe go stay with Mia’s father and Dan till things calm down,” he said.“No, the river won’t be so bad. She will forgive me eventually. That’s what mothers do,” I said, though my mother wasn’t like normal mothers. “Besides, Dan has Melana there all the time. I can’t stand her.”“What are you going to do about blood? You can have some of mine, but I know it won’t taste too good.”I shook my head. “It’s fine. I will just catch something,” I told him though that didn’t sound all that appealing. He nodded before digging through his bag again. “Here,” he said, handing me some money. “Liam, calm down! You think we asked for this to happen?” I heard Mia’s Dad yell at her as Liam and I rushed out, peering over the balcony to the floor below. Mia’s Dad ducked as she threw something at him, and it hit the wall behind him, leaving a dent.“Love, enough,” I heard Liam, my stepfather, tell her.“What? Are you fucking okay with this? It is fucking wrong!” she screamed, and curiosity got the better of Liam and me. I crept down the steps. Liam, also curious, followed me. One of the steps creaked under his weight, and he smiled, his teeth clenched and his eyes squinting. My mother looked up at me, her face twisting in anger at the sight of me.“And you! You wait till I get my hands on you!” she growled, about to storm up the steps. Thanks, Liam. Now we don’t know what they were arguing over, I thought to myself when I saw my mother’s thong flying toward me. I ducked before snorting that she just threw her shoe at me. I watched Liam dart off, escaping her fury.“Get here now!

That woman was crazy and damn, did she have a good hand. I could still remember the last ass-kicking she gave me, never thinking I would walk the same again. She branded my ass real good that day.Only this time, I really messed up. I burned the entire science lab down. I still believe it wasn’t completely my fault. Yes, I burned the classroom down, but I only intended to destroy the table, not blow the entire place up. Not my fault someone left the gas on, the teacher was supposed to turn it off before locking it up.Dan opened the back door of the car, pushing me toward it.“How about you both go, and I wait here?” I suggested. Mia’s dad These bloody meetings were boring, but Liam insisted we sit through the Alpha meet every year. We still had a year before we took over Black Moon Pack, so I thought it rather pointless when we didn’t actually get a say in anything yet. They weren’t so bad, though. My entire family was here, seeing as we all came from Alpha bloodlines. My aunty Mia was here with her husband Mike, from the Crescent Pack. My older sister Nikki and her two mates, Tate and Drake, from the Forest Pack were also here. And of course, my other older sister Jessica and her mate Chase, from the Red River Pack were here sitting next to my mother. Black Creek Packs Alpha, Dan, and his Luna were also here with two other packs, whom I couldn’t remember for the life of me. Kind of pointless when my family ran the majority of the packs. Not like the other three packs could argue; no one wanted to piss off hybrid wolf packs. And they sure as hell didn’t want to piss off my brother Liam, the Alpha King, a tit

And since polar bears in the wild in California are kinda not a thing, those bears are your guys.”Her friend had lost her mind. “Nikki, have you hit your head on something?”“Honey, if I was there, I’d shift and show you.”“But the full moon was yesterday.”She snorted. “Fairy tales. We shift whenever we want to. Look, I feel fairly confident of this, but have you looked around where you saw the bears.”“Yeah.”“Any blood? Body parts? For the first time since before she stated modeling, she didn’t even care if she had coffee before starting her day. They lay on either side of her and mirrored one another, starting with nuzzling her ears, nibbling the lobes, grazing her neck with their teeth then doing the same to her shoulders. She shivered, already soaked between her legs and with her nipples on full alert. She hadn’t lied. They had ruined her for anyone else. And while Liam’s invitation to “stay forever” was just pillow talk, she could pretend. Pretend they wanted her for all of their lives, to make love to and ride snowmobiles to gorgeous settings for her photography. Maybe they’d be willing to pose. Usually she preferred nature scenes, but adding these two could only improve on the backdrops. Mother Nature was responsible for them, too, after all. But even

I could tell you were super close, last night and, let’s face it, comfortable naked together, but since you didn’t umm interact with each other, I didn’t know if you were just good friends in the habit of sharing women or…” She swallowed hard and the tears spilled over, pouring down her cheeks. “Why do you even need me?
