LEAH
Time had been moving fast. Two months had gone by since my parents died, and my father betrayed me. What else was I supposed to do? I accepted my fate. Kate had followed through on her words in helping with the surrogacy. I tried talking her out of it, but she was hell bent on doing it. I sighed, pulling out the page from my book. “Fuck,” I muttered, moulding the page into a bowl. I tossed into the trash can, and as expected, missed. I hissed, walking off my bed. I had unofficially given Lucas the permission to take over as CEO. If my father thought he was good enough to take everything while I was just some ornamental part of his life, I wouldn't go against his wishes. I looked outside the window, awaiting their arrival. For two months, I had pushed off my father's brothers and today, I had finally decided to host them. It was time to clear the air. As I looked out the window, I saw two cars pull up. Soon enough, three more followed. They were arriving in their numbers. Good. I walked to my closet for a fresh set of clothes. — As I stepped down from the stairs, I noticed as all eyes fell on me. I approached them with grace. “You called us,” the eldest spoke. There was no need for pleasantries, and none was given. “I did.” “Whatever you have to say, make it fast. We are busy men.” “Fine. Lucas will be taking over my father as I am with child.” I watched their eyes widen. We had decided to keep the surrogacy a secret. “How are we sure it's not one of your…scenarios?” One of them asked, I knew they were referring to my miscarriages. “I am quite sure this is not one of them. Either ways, if something eventually happens, I'll let you all know. I'm sure you'll be elated to hear it.” The room fell silent. “Seeing that there is room for an heir, I guess it's safe to say I still have the rights to the company. Isn't that so?” “It is.” he ground out. “I guess our conversation is done.” I snapped. All four of them rose to their feet, and walked out. It was admirable how we were able to keep our talks short and wise. I turned around to find Ruth staring at me. As I approached her, I noticed the wrinkles beneath her eyes. Her frame had become lean and fragile. “Hey,” I called her. She walked towards me. “Ma'am, your dinner is ready.” She replied, I touched my stomach. “I'm not hungry. What's the time?” She brought out her pocket watch. Over the numerous years I had lived with Ruth, I had never seen her without that timepiece. “It's ten minutes to midnight ma'am. You've not had anything to eat today.” Oh. “Lucas isn't home yet. I think I'll wait so we can have dinner together,” I informed her. Her eyes held the words her mouth wouldn't say. In the last two months, Lucas had been barely making it home in time for dinner. Even when he got back, he immediately retreated to bed. I didn't want to be inconsiderate. I knew it was a lot of work, having to handle my family's business and settling in. I was trying to be a good wife. Really, I was, but there was a part of me that craved my husband. “I'll be up in my room,” I informed her. “Should I bring your meal upstairs?” “No, I'll be fine.” I replied. I walked out. Laying on my bed, I recalled how close Lucas and I were before all this erupted. I craved that kind of attention. I sighed, laying on the bed. Lucas was doing his best. He was trying to settle down. Things would return to normal soon. He had said that. About an hour later, I heard the door open. I rose to my feet immediately. “Hey babe,” I said, wrapping my arms around him. He placed his lips on mine, and immediately pulled off. “How was work?” I asked, watching him drop his jacket on the bed. “It was good,” he replied, taking off his clothings. He didn't say anything else. “I was thinking, maybe we could hang out tomorrow. It's a Sunday, and I was thinking we could go on one of those picnics we used to hold. Maybe dance in the sun, and have fun.” I heard him sigh deeply. “Baby, I've told you how busy I am. There's no time.” “I know.” I agreed, “it's just that, tomorrow is Sunday and it wouldn't hurt to-” “I am busy Leah! How don't you get that? I have a lot of work to do! Lots of work that your father left behind in my care!” I jerked back. Lucas had never raised his voice at me. “God,” he muttered, massaging his forehead. “I will try to make out time for us to hang out, and have some fun, but you have to understand me. It's not easy for me.” “I understand.” I agreed, weak. “Good. I'm going to take a bath,” “Should Ruth heat up your food?” I asked, hoping we could have dinner together. “No. I had dinner with some clients.” “Oh-” He walked into the bathroom. Silently, I walked to the bed. I was about to lay down when his phone buzzed. I knew I wasn't supposed to look, and I really didn't want to, but a hidden part of me wanted to know what was going on. Maybe if I had a sneak peek, it would help me understand him. I would be able to schedule things at the right time. I picked up his phone. His password was still the same-my birthday. As I unlocked it, a handful of notifications popped. I slid through, reading them through the notification bar. There was nothing suspicious. Just a bunch of meetings and clients. I was about to drop the phone when I came across a familiar number. “Love you too,” the last text read. I looked at the name, and I knew it couldn't be me. Lucas and I hadn't texted in a long while. Holding my breath, I tapped on the chat. “Oh. My. God.” I muttered silently. I paused. I blinked. I scrolled. I didn't know what to do. I wiped my eyes. Maybe my lack of sleep was getting to me. I tapped the icon bar, and stared at the number. I knew that number! I inputted into my phone, and I wasn't wrong. I scrolled further, trying to find the origin of their texts. I scrolled past six months worth of texts and it seemed like I wasn't any closer to getting to the origin. I kept on scrolling, until I heard his voice. “Leah, what are you doing?” I looked up, clutching the phone in my hands. “What are you doing?” He repeated, My heart was beating rapidly. I was too stunned to speak. “Give me my phone,” he demanded, stretching his hands. I clutched it even harder. “No.” “Give me my damn phone!” “There is no way I'm giving this phone to you until you explain what is in here.” I growled out. He rolled his eyes, “what are you talking about?” “Don’t act like you don't know what I'm talking about! Why are there romantic texts between you and Kate? And why is it dated all the way to a year back?”LEAH At the revelation of his affair, I expected a little bit of remorse, or even surprise. He huffed his shoulders, placing his hands on his hips. “Did you really not know about this?” He asked, I was too stunned to speak. Seeing the reaction on my face, he chuckled, “you actually believed I loved you.” His chuckle turned into a full laughter. He wiped his eyes, grinning, “let's be serious, Leah. You actually believed I loved you?” I opened my mouth to speak, but I was at a loss for words. Wasn't that the point of a marriage? “Give me my phone,” he demanded. With no resistance, I handed it over. I was too stupefied to even think of words. How was I just finding out? How did I miss the signs? “How long has this been going on?” I asked, He was putting on a fresh pair of clothes. “It's best you don't know,” “I need to know.” I ground out, “how long has this been going on?” He grunted. “Fine. If you want to know, Kate and I have been in love for three years.” “Three years?
LEAHI laid still, unable to move as my head banged.I heard Kate walk up to me, and as soon as she saw my eyes open, she hissed.“She's alive,” she said to Lucas.“I knew that already. You were panicking for nothing.” His nonchalance was all too obvious.I felt the tears brimming up in my eyes.“Get up!” Kate barked at me,When I didn't move, she stomped my legs with her shoes.I whimpered, as I crawled my way up.Tears had formed on my eyes, and I could feel my bones jittering as I rose to my feet. She sneered as she crossed her arms around me.Lucas moved forward, and placed an arm on her shoulder. I watched as he kissed her forehead. The same man that had claimed that I was the best thing that had happened to him was kissing another woman right before me.I watched as he kissed her neck, and she moaned, grabbing his shirt. He chuckled, then buried his nose in her neck. “Babe,” he called,“Yes,” we both answered.I covered, bowing my head as they both glared at me.“My sunshine,” L
LEAHI couldn't believe it! She was here! I smiled broadly, wrapping my arms around her. “Thank God you're here, I didn't think I'd ever see you again.” I sighed into her shoulders. Her presence felt like a breath of fresh air. At least she would return stability to the craziness that was going on.I had expected her to pat my back, and tell me all would be fine, but she simply pushed me off. “Get off me!” She thundered at me,I jumped back in surprise, “mom…”“I am not your mother.” She ground out, casting a glare on me, “where is my son?” She asked, walking into the house. My shoulders fell and my mood faltered as I followed her. She walked in, placing her bag on the couch. I couldn't understand what was going on. How did everyone turn their backs on me? What had I done wrong?I watched her sneer as she looked at the room, “why is this place such a mess?” She asked, turning around. I couldn't muster up the courage to answer. This wasn't what Lucas's mother acted like. What had got
LEAHThis just had to be the worst day of my life. In the entire day, I had been subscepted into having only one meal, and four glasses of water. My throat was itching, and I was feeling faint, but there was so much work to do.Kate had ensured I was to clean, and scrub every inch of the house. The same house I had bought with my own money!I wiped my nose, trying to focus on the job at hand.I had cried, and whimpered, but there was no hope. I cried for the loss of my parents. I cried for my father, and his betrayal. I cried for my mother. My tears had expired, and my head was spinning, but I still had so much to do.Kate and Lucas had fired off all the workers-gardeners inclusive, and I had no choice but to take up everything.Lucas's mother's words rang in my head, “even if you run away, who will you run to? You have no one. Not a single person cares about you.”There had been no truer words. I had no one. The only family I had was gone, and the people who had been the closest thin
LEAHAs soon as I turned around, every feeling in my stomach dilated. I watched as he had a frown on his face, and a beer in the other hand.Lucas was always one to be found with a beer, but never found drunk. Most times,he didn't even ooze it. I dropped the rags in my hands, “I don't have the energy to be beaten up one more time,” I said out loud.I watched as he raised a brow, but then his eyes fell in realization as he saw my face and the way I held my arm.I expected him to cackle or ignore me, but he didn't.“I’m sorry,” he said,I paused. I looked around, trying to see who could be watching us for him to use such a nice word on me.“Why?”“You're confused, and I get it.” He said, walking forward.I took three steps backwards. He noticed, and paused. “I won't take a step closer,” he saidy raising both his arms.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Why was he being nice to me?“Have you eaten today?” He asked, “you look famished,”I shook my head. He groaned, and then dropped
LEAH. “Tell me Leah, in these few days that we’ve been apart, haven't you missed me?”My heart skipped, Once, twice. Thump, thump. I wanted to think rationally, I wanted to think like a normal person in the situation. Why on earth was Lucas suddenly interested in me? After all the maltreatment I had gone through? After all he had done to me?I didn't want to be anywhere near him, but I was betrayed by my heart. My body craved him. The one person it shouldn't.How disgusting could I be? The man that had shown me hell, just in the space of a few weeks, was now offering an olive branch, and here I was, wanting to grasp at it with everything in me. How pathetic was that? How pathetic was it that I still wanted him this much?“No, I haven't.” I said with the little shred of dignity left in me. “I haven't missed you,” I ground out. I couldn't let this man take everything from me. Literally all I had was already in his position.“What are you saying?” He asked, flinching back, with surp
LEAH. “What is going on?” I heard an all too familiar voice ask.I looked past Lucas to see his wife, Kate. The woman who had meant the most to me.As I watched her approach us, I realized the memories between us would never fade. She would always be etched permanently on a side of my brain, and her presence would hurt every time.I had taken her as my sister, and family, but it seemed to me that she wasn't appreciative of that. She didn't take our friendship for what it was, she saw me as something else. I still couldn't understand what she meant when she said my parents had been the reason for the loss of hers. They had literally taken her in even when she had nothing!I sighed…If Kate so dearly believed that my parents were responsible for the death of her loved ones, I would ensure that I proved her wrong. No one loved her as much as my family and I did.“What's going on?” She repeated, as the silence lingered.“It's your best friend.” Lucas snorted, his eyes never leaving mine
LEAH. I woke up to the dogs barking and the birds singing. I felt so cold; I looked around and saw how bright the day was, only to remember what happened the previous night: I was thrown out. I looked at where I had slept; it was out in the cold, on the bare floor—something I had never done in my life. I touched my arm, trying to wipe off the dust. If only I had gotten the chance to wear an appropriate cloth for the night, maybe I would have felt better than I was currently feeling.Although I wanted to cry out, I didn't. It wasn't that I was strong, or extremely brave, but I just had to spite Kate and Lucas. I couldn't let them see me cry, or be weakened. They didn't deserve it. If I cried, it'd make her feel like she had successfully broken me, and I would rather die than watch the satisfaction on her face. I dusted my body and sighed. As I walked to the tree shed and waited for the door to be opened for me, I pondered on the things I could do to leave the horrendous situation t
LEAHWait a minute. This had to be some sort of joke, right?I took a deep breath, trying to stabilize my nerves before I spoke.“I'm sorry, I didn't quite get you clearly.” I said to them, still dwelling in denial.“Your friend Kate was murdered on the seventeenth, three days ago, and we have reasons to believe that you were the culprit.”What? I squinted my eyes trying to see them clearly. Tears had clouded my vision.“That's impossible. Kate cannot be dead.” I denied it.She had just given birth to a child, and never did she make mention of any complications.Yes, I hadn't called her, but she had only texted me with information that she had a child. Nothing else whatsoever.I sniffed in, wiping my nose.“Madam, we would appreciate it if you came to the station to talk to us.”“I-” I tried to reply, but the words wouldn't leave my mouth.“It makes no sense,” I whispered.“Let's get to the station. From there, we'll put the pieces together.” His voice was firm, yet gentle. From the
LEAHI studied her carefully. Almost just as much as she did, me. She didn't flinch, or seem the least bit surprised. Well, what could I expect? She was a therapist. She had probably heard, and seen worse.“We've all had that kind of thought at some point in life.” She finally replied, “more apples?” She nudged,I hadn't realized I had stomped on the one I had taken.I picked up another one. “I don't think anyone has experienced such emotions as I do. I literally have vivid dreams of me digging my hands into his chest, and plucking his heart out. It's getting too realistic. Sometimes, they're not even dreams. They're like visions.”“Do you have imaginations of murdering numerous people, or just one person?” She asked,Her seemingly feeble hands rubbed her knee. “I am experiencing some knee pains.” She explained,I nodded. “Sorry.”“Thank you.”“So, go on.” She nudged,“Most of the time, I dream of my husband. Soon to be my ex husband.”“Is there any reason you'd want to murder him?”
LEAHI didn't know what to say.“What do we do?” I managed to ask.“Nothing. We watch him ruin his life with his own hands.” He replied,I took a deep breath, still almost speechless.“Well, thanks for informing me.” I thanked him,“Yeah,” he replied. The call ended immediately. I sighed. How did we let this happen under our nose?I exhaled heavily. There was just too much going on for me to even think clearly.“Mary,”“Yes, ma'am.” She replied, scurrying in.“Could you reach out to Clark Ink, and see if they can send the videos to you before release? I'd like them to crop out some parts.” Especially those that involved Jessica asking about my private life.I dug my teeth into my bottom lip.My phone buzzed, and I turned to find a text from Francis.“No congratulations?” It read,I sucked in my teeth, dropping the phone back on the desk.Exhausted, I decided it was time to take a break. Maybe it was time for me to just leave this environment. The constant need, and obsession for re
LEAHI couldn't believe it. I was tongue-tied, in front of cameras.“Are you alright?” Jennifer asked. The fake concern was raw in her voice.I cleared my throat, “I am.”“He did tell you about the new development, didn't he?” “Yes, he did.” I lied, “I just didn't think we'd be announcing it so soon, as it is just in its planning phase.”“Oh. He was probably just excited about the new development.”“Right,” I agreed. The rest of the interview passed by a breeze. I could only count down the minutes for Jennifer to throw her minor shades.Soon enough, she closed up. “Cut!” The director's authoritative voice spoke.Jennifer plastered a smile on her face, “thank you for letting us host you.”“You're welcome. Thanks for the invite.”“This was fun. I hope we get to do it again.’I would rather chew on my husband's balls.“Sure, maybe after I achieve another great feat.”She threw a fist slightly in the air, “I'm sure that won't take too long.”She eventually got her cracked ass off my cha
LEAHHe laughed boisterously through the phone. What the actual fuck?!I clutched the receiver tightly. “Francis, where are you?” I asked,“In Vegas, baby!” He screamed,I heard a number of people cheering in the background.“Francis, I need you to listen to me. You can't get married to Carla.”“Uh, why?” He slurred,I clutched the receiver, not knowing what to say.“You just can't.” I ground out,“But why?” “Because it's unreasonable for you to-”“I'm sorry, Francis is quite busy at the moment.” Carla's voice came in.“Hey, give me my phone!” I heard Francis scream.I heard grunts. It seemed like Francis was battling for his phone. “Will you give me a minute? I'll give you the phone as soon as I'm done.” Carla's voice came out.I began to speak into the phone, “whatever you think you're doing, you'd better cut it out.”“Or else what?” She barked, “you're not his family. You have no legal rights over him. Face your fucking marriage if you will.” She spat.My lips parted, but before I
LEAHThis had to be some kind of joke, right?“I don't know what you're talking about,” I replied, closing the files.I tried all I could to resist my shaking hands from being obvious. He seemed oblivious to it, as he swiped on his bottom lip. His head bobbed repeatedly as he walked around the room.I looked outside, ensuring he knew people could see us. He finally faced me, then took a seat.“Everyone knows you're fucking the Mountains brothers.” He accused,A lump grew on my throat. There was no way he knew that, right? Even the brothers themselves had no idea who I had a sexual relationship with. I took another look at him, and I could tell he was trying to judge my reaction. He knew nothing.I straightened my spine as I clamped my hands together. “You're just spewing lies because your fucked up brain got yourself nearly killed.” He chuckled, “you've grown a whole lot of balls.” “More than you ever could.” I spat back. His chuckle was low, and dark. “Don't you dare think, even
LEAHI watched as she scrambled her way up. Her eyes, with fire in them, glared at me. I didn't even falter.“You better watch out for me. I'll be back,” she threatened, shoving her car keys in my face.Noting that I had no intention of responding, she hissed, and stomped all the way to her car.Annoyed, I walked back into the house. I pointed at the first maid in sight, “who is she?” I asked,“She is Patricia McGreg. She used to be affiliated with Mr. Mountains.”“What separated them?” I asked, scrunching my nose.I could still feel the aftermath of her slap on my face. “I have no idea, ma'am.”I waved her off.Even if she did know, there was no way she'd admit it. I knew she had to be professional.“Can I get you an ice pack?” She asked,“Yes,” I replied,She swiftly moved out of the room. A minute later, she returned with an ice pack in her hands.“Here, it is.” She said, handing it over to me.I placed the pack on my cheek. I had been through worse, but taking a slap from her wa
LEAHI kept staring at the screen in confusion. What was I meant to do with this piece of information?I'd be lying if I said I cared about Kate's pregnancy. Just because she had helped me escape didn't mean we were on talking terms. Or was she trying to make me jealous? I couldn't put it past her.Moreber, wasn't it the same pregnancy that she had used to decieve me? She lied that she would be a surrogate for me.I hissed.I began to type, “congr...” The words faltered from my thoughts. She didn't deserve it, I decided. I tapped the backspace button five times.I quickly closed my phone.Drew got up from his seat, and walked out of the room.I leaned on the chair. Great. I was back to having nothing to do. It always drove me crazy.I continuously scrolled through my phone, until I eventually recalled the text I had gotten previously.I immediately scrolled back to that text. An anonymous texter telling me that they had access to the files we were searching for.But how was I sure it
LEAH“Take this,” Drew handed over his shirt to me.I received it gently, pulling it over me.I watched as he slipped into his trousers, and buckled up his belt.It had stopped raining, and the clouds were beginning to clear up.I looked at Drew one last time, and our eyes locked.“Are you okay?” He asked,I could hear the care in his voice, but couldn't see it in his actions. There was obviously no feelings attached to what had just happened, but I tried to decipher what kind of emotion I was feeling. It felt like...satisfaction.I was actually satisfied with this.“I'm good,” I responded,I got off the table, and walked to pick up my trousers, but just like my shirt, my trousers had been deeply stained, and torn in the process.I looked at my legs. Drew's shirt hadn't done a great deal, but my ass was covered. It was good enough, and would suffice.“Let's get you inside. You probably need a hot drink or something to keep you warm.” He said to me,I nodded, and followed him out of th
