Chapter 106

Michael's POV

I watched Jason stand up as the first witness as I took a deep breath. I began to search for Freya with my eyes, but couldn't find her. I needed her testimony as much as I needed Jason's.

The prosecutor had signaled for Jason to speak as I closed my eyes, fixing my gaze on him, but then Jason never gave me a glance for a second.

"I was supposed to accompany the defendant, who happens to be my best friend, on that day, but then I had a lot of work on deck, and amongst them were the business schedule with Zenon Group of Companies, and I have every detail in here," Jason said, raising a file filled with lots of documents.

"Mr. Jason, we want you to say everything you know about the incident on that day; it seems you've forgotten why you are being called," the prosecutor interrupted, as I felt forced to get on my feet and scold him. How dare he interrupt when he wasn't the judge?

"I cannot agree to the claim that the defendant is indeed guilty of murder of hi

Chapter 107Freya's POVI had successfully maneuvered myself into the gate, unnoticed. Somehow, the staff uniform I had disguised myself in somehow managed to fit. I made sure to follow all of Raymond's instructions as I somehow found my way to the secret door. I never had any idea that a secret passage existed in Ambrose's home. After my mission, I was going to use the opportunity to see what lay in Ambrose's secret room."Go in, watch that boy, and don't ever let him out of your sight," one of the domestic workers said to another as I hid perfectly behind a wall, trying my best not to reveal myself. I exhaled after holding my breath for a while. I could see three surveillance cameras from where I was, but I needed to do something to distract their attention. And then, I remembered the fire alarm."Oh, shit!" I muttered, hitting a piece of metal, which perhaps caught the attention of Julia, Waylen's nanny, as she paused, heading towards the direction where I had hidden. "Dear Lord,

Chapter 108Ambrose's POVI could barely concentrate after the phone call from my apartment. How could every one of my domestic workers be so stupid as not to have caught an intruder? I was going to make them pay. But then, I couldn't get out of here soon. The judge would begin the bail hearing speech, and I couldn't afford to miss such a wonderful moment. I glanced towards Michael's direction as I revealed a sly smile. The outburst of happiness within me just couldn't be depleted. I had watched Michael as he sat hopelessly on the defense seat, and I wondered how well the seat suited him. He should look for possible means to secure that spot instead of competing with me; he was no match for me. Freya was nowhere to be found. Poor Michael, his first love had sided with me, and Freya had abandoned him as soon as he got arrested."So," the judge began not long after. I revealed a smile, the very moment I had waited for. "After careful consideration and review of the testimony presen

My petite frame was already tired from the little space behind the picture frame in which I had squeezed myself."Adams, there's something in my room," I could hear Waylen's voice from outside. Chapter 1Freya's POVI stood frozen, my eyes fixed on the grand staircase as my life flashed before me. I had vowed never to get involved with rich and influential men like Michael Smith, the billionaire I had just married. But life had other plans."Miss Rogers, we don't really have to maintain an intimate relationship when we're alone," Michael said, his voice piercing through my thoughts. "The contract doesn't apply except when a third party is involved."I turned to face him, my heart sinking. His words were cold and detached, his eyes devoid of emotion. I forced a reply, trying to keep my tone neutral. "Oh, yes."Michael's gaze swept over me, his eyes lingering on my face before he turned to leave. I watched, feeling a surge of resentment, as he ridiculed me with his towering height."Mr. Smith," I called out, my voice firm but polite. He paused, his back still turned to me."Where's my room?" I asked, trying to keep my tone even. "You didn't show me my room."Michael turned, hi

" But don't worry, I'll find a way to let them out and everything can go back to how it was".There was something about his eyes; sad and lonely, but I guess my pain and misery were greater. My gaze rested on the portrait of a beautiful woman in Michael's room. He did have a woman in his heart, I wondered. Why were they apart? Was that the reason behind his loneliness and sadness?." Miss Rogers," he called, bringing me from my trance. " My cousins won't come here without an ulterior motive. I know it's going to be difficult, addressing me like a husband publicly, but we have to stick to it. That way, we both get to save the only thing that mattered to us," he paused , but I was unable to say a word, " so in the meantime, you have to stay in my room. I assure you, they'll both leave when they don't get what they want""Pretending to be a happy couple, you

Chapter 3 Michael's POV [You're a murderer. You think no one knows, but I do. You're a murderer, Michael. You remember five years ago? The world will know about you now!] Horror gripped me, my mind racing with Emma's sudden return and its connection to the ominous message. Memories of that fateful night five years ago flooded back. I knew someone else probably knew about the incident of five years ago. Someone aside Emma and I knew about Bella's death. Bella; my little sister. Who on Earth would send this message? The weight of guilt still crushed me, refusing to lift its oppressive grip. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was responsible for Bella's death. The pain of losing her was worsened by the fact that I never got to say goodbye, never got to hold her one last time. The worst part was not being able to find her body. She was buried before I even regained consciousness, leaving me with a gaping hole in my heart. The thought of her being laid to rest without me being there

Michael seemed to sense my tension, but before he could say anything, my worst fear stood before me. Ambrose was too engrossed in giving Michael a deep look to notice me."Enough of me, Meet Freya Rogers, my wife," his introduction hung in the air like a challenge, and I felt a surge of anxiety. I coughed suddenly, the sound forced and awkward. It was now or never; I had to face this."Hi, I'm... Freya..." I started, but Ambrose cut me off."What! Is this your wife, Michael?" His eyes widened in shock, clearly stunned to see me among all the women he could have met. He might have controlled me and my body in the past. I might have loved him foolishly. But this time, I was no longer the naive and lovesick Freya. I was a desperate woman fighting to save my mother."C'mon, why the look?" Michael asked, oblivious to the tension. "I should be the one surprised; everyon

Chapter 105Freya's POVMy heart kept bleeding as I sighted Michael from afar, accompanied by a court officer. "We should go talk to him, Freya. The court rules don't go against it. We just need to ask how well he's holding up, nothing about the witness case," Jason said to me softly, as I nodded my head. "Let's go," I said, with each walking step closer to him making the knot in my chest tighter. As we got closer to him, the court official made a gesture showing he was ready to stop him from interacting with us. "Please, it won't take long," I pleaded. "Nothing must disrupt the witness process. I can't leave you two with him. I can't break court conduct," he said, as I closed my eyes for a moment, biting my lips."Hey, Michael," I called, not minding what the court officer was saying. All that mattered to me was getting Michael out of here; I didn't mind doing anything. Anything at all; just to make sure Michael was safe. "Hey, ugly Freya. You're still so ugly," Michael teased, reve

I began to say a quiet prayer deep inside of me, hoping everyone who had promised to give their testimony would show up. My heart began to beat faster as I thought of Emma.
