A Dinner Gone Wrong

Richard Donovan had buried his secrets for years.

And now, with Claire’s engagement plastered across every news outlet, those secrets were crawling back to the surface.

Victoria stared at him, pulse quickening. “Richard, what’s going on?”

He exhaled sharply, tossing his phone onto the coffee table.

On the screen, a news article still glowed.

‘Billionaire Gordon Hayes Announces Surprise Engagement to Claire Donovan.’

Richard’s jaw tightened. “Gordon Hayes… I should have finished him off when I had the chance.”

Victoria’s breath hitched. “What?”

His expression darkened. “That boy wasn’t just any employee, Victoria. He was ambitious. Too ambitious. I saw it early on and knew he would be a problem.”

“You fired him,” Victoria said, her voice unsteady.

Richard let out a bitter chuckle. “I did more than that.” His jaw clenched. “I made sure he never got another opportunity in this country.”

A chill ran through Victoria. “You blacklisted him?”

Richard scoffed. “It was necessary. He was getting too close, making connections, catching the attention of the wrong people. If I hadn’t cut him off, he would’ve been a threat to my business.”

Victoria swallowed. “And now he’s a billionaire.”

Richard’s fists tightened. “And he’s marrying our daughter.”

For the first time, realization settled deep in Victoria’s gut.

This wasn’t love.

This was revenge.

And Claire was right in the middle of it.

***

After days of ignoring her mother’s calls, Claire finally picked up.

And, as expected, Victoria Donovan was furious.

“How could you get engaged without telling me?” she snapped. “And to Gordon Hayes, of all people?”

Claire sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Mom, can we not do this over the phone? I’ll come over.”

A pause. Then Victoria’s tone shifted. “Your father is back.”

Claire stilled.

Her father wasn’t supposed to return for another three months.

“What? When?”

“Yesterday. He’s been asking about you.”

Claire swallowed hard. Facing her father was never easy.

But now, with this marriage hanging over her head, she knew he wouldn’t let her off easily.

Still, she had already made up her mind.

“Fine. I’ll come over.”

She glanced at Gordon, who was sitting across from her, looking completely unbothered as he checked his watch.

“You’re coming with me.”

He looked up, one brow raised. “Oh? I didn’t realize I had in-laws to impress.”

She shot him a look. “You’re my fiancé. You’re meeting my family.”

A slow smirk tugged at his lips, but he didn’t argue.

“Alright, sweetheart. Let’s go see Daddy.”

The Donovan Mansion

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Richard Donovan sat across from Gordon, his face carefully blank.

He had been expecting this moment.

But now that Gordon was right in front of him.calm, confident, unreadable.he felt something he hadn’t in a long time.

Fear.

Victoria, sitting beside her husband, kept stealing glances between them.

She could feel it too. The undercurrent of something deeper. Something dangerous.

Claire, oblivious to the silent war, cleared her throat.

“Dad, I know this is sudden, but Gordon and I are getting married.”

Richard’s fingers tapped against the armrest of his chair.

“And how exactly did this… happen?”

Gordon leaned forward slightly, his expression polite… almost amused.

“Fate, I suppose.”

Richard’s grip on the armrest tightened.

He studied Gordon’s face, searching for some sign that he remembered. Some sign that he knew.

But Gordon was a master of control.

His eyes held no resentment. No accusation.

Just charm.

It was almost convincing.

Almost.

Maybe… he really doesn’t know.

Maybe this was just a coincidence.

Maybe his past wasn’t coming back to haunt him after all.

But then

Gordon’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile.

And Richard realized, with cold certainty…

This was no coincidence.

A few days later,

Claire couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten at such an expensive restaurant.

The dim lighting, the soft hum of classical music, and the waiters in crisp uniforms made her feel like a guest in someone else’s world.

She sat across from Gordon, watching as he effortlessly cut into his steak, every movement precise and controlled.

She had to admit it was easy to see why people found him intimidating.

Just as she was about to take another bite, a voice cut through the air like a knife.

"You heartless bastard!"

Claire barely had time to process the words before a woman in red stormed toward their table.

She looked furious, her eyes blazing with emotion.

And before Claire could react

A wine glass went flying.

The red liquid splattered across Gordon’s crisp white shirt.

The restaurant went dead silent.

Gordon, however, barely moved.

He simply set his knife down, dabbing his face with a napkin, as if this was nothing more than a mild inconvenience.

Claire, on the other hand, was not so calm.

“Excuse me?!” she shot up, staring at the woman in shock.

The woman turned to her, rage twisting her face. “Oh, honey. Don’t tell me he hasn’t told you.”

Claire blinked. “Told me what?”

The woman let out a bitter laugh.

“That he’s a liar. A user. A man who strings women along, makes them believe they’re special, then throws them away like garbage!”

Claire’s stomach twisted.

She turned to Gordon, expecting him to deny it. To say something. Anything.

But he didn’t.

He just sighed.

Then, he smirked.

“You should leave.” His voice was calm, almost bored.

The woman lost it.

Before anyone could stop her, she grabbed Claire’s wrist and yanked her forward.

“You don’t get it, do you? He’s going to destroy you!”

Claire yelped, trying to pull away, but the woman’s nails dug into her skin.

And then

A sharp pain shot through her head.

The woman had grabbed a nearby bottle and swung it.

Claire barely registered the impact before her vision blurred.

Gasps rang out. Someone screamed.

The last thing she saw before everything went black was Gordon’s chair scraping against the floor as he shot up from his seat.

Could this Be Gordon's Plan?

Sure enough, there was a picture of him carrying her out of the restaurant, looking like some kind of knight in shining armour. The headlines were ridiculous."Billionaire Gordon

We need horses.”Naomi, sitting across from him, folded her arms. “For what exactly?”“For the wedding, obviously.” Ryan looked at her like she had no imagination. “Picture this Claire arrives on a white horse, looking elegant and royal. Gordon waits for her at the altar, all stoic and brooding. The media will eat it up.”Naomi rolled her eyes. “Oh please, this isn’t a fairytale. It’s a contract marriage, remember?”Ryan’s smirk widened. “Exactly! And since it’s fake, we might as well make it over the top. No. He saw this wedding as a business opportunity a merger, an alliance that could pull his company back from the edge. That was the only reason he suddenly supported her decision. He thought Gordon loved her.To him, love was strong enough to break any

The next day came sooner than expected. Claire woke up, stuck with choices, how to feel, things to do. As she brainstormed with her eyes closed, Claire rolled off the couch landing on the ground with her back. She groaned in pain at the careless mistake. It had totally left her mind that she was lying on the couch; she must have twisted and turned so many times for her to actually fall off the big couch that was three times her size. “Are you going to keep sitting there?” Gordon asked.Claire raised her head in shock when she heard Gordon's voice; her eyes trailed down his wet hair to his bare chest and to his waistline, that has a towel hanging dangerously low on it. “Take a picture, it'll last longer.” Gordon said again pushing himself away from the door as he stepped into the room. Claire's face turned a bright red at his words, she rushed to stand on her feet, sending Gordon glares for mocking her so early. “It was a mistake. It will not happen again.” Claire remarked and th

Claire nodded and excused herself from the cook. She looked very aggrieved and sad but said nothing about it. 20 minutes later, Claire came out of her and Gordon's bedroom. Wearing a professional suit pant, a button down top, her hair was styled into a ponytail and long earrings dangled from her ears. Her short heels clicked on the stairs as she stepped down. Claire had impeccable dressing sense, she had walked into the huge closet and got filled with excitement seeing all the clothes she could wear and style to her satisfaction. She made a mental note to ask Gordon who had gotten those clothes and say a thank you to that person. Claire held a purse that complimented her dress, her phone, lipgloss and glasses secured inside it. Gordon was busy talking to Ryan on the couch when he held the sound of heels, he turned and his eyes landed on Claire. He did a quick scan of her body and clothes, satisfied with how she looked. A part of him also felt warm and fuzzy which he quickly blinke

"Alright." Gordon answered. He was not an amateur when it came to washing dishes, he had washed them for a period of time, when he was in his 20s. "Allow me help you with the dishes. You already prepared dinner." Gordon muttered after a second thought, feeling considerate.Claire looked up at him with surprise, he was volunteering to help her do the dishes. He didn't have to. "You do not have to. You have been busy all day." Claire responded."Then let's do it together. I'll provide assistance while you wash." Gordon said, giving no room for objections as he headed directly into the kitchen.Claire tried to stop him, but he seemed adamant on helping, so she went inside and allowed him help her. The day ended with Gordon and Claire doing the dishes, freshening up for a bath and going to sleep. ........................."Ma'am, there are a few people downstairs wanting to see you." "You did not ask Mira." Gordon responded. "I'm done with lunch. Unfortunately I have work, so I'll be on my way now." Gordon added and left from there. Ethan felt satisfaction from watching Mira's appearance change from happiness, to sadness and misery. He quickly followed behind Gordon not wanting to be left alone with a witch. Mira stood there as she watched Gordon leave from there. A foreign feeling creeped up her chest, hatred? Envy? Sadness? She had not felt what it was like to be sad for a while and now she could feel sadness? The man she spent all her Life waiting for, was married to someone else? This could not be happening. Definitely not under her nose right now. This could not be happening. While Mira was pondering, her assistant who had been busy in a meeting, apparently filling in for Mira, who was suppose to be there was back."Ma'am. The list of applicants for the fashion design is out." Mira hummed and nodded, she gestured her assistant and headed out with her tr

Just recently he had gotten information that she was in Paris and now, he finds her in UK like she had not been gone for a few years. The woman named Mira frowned at the time in which he used to address her. Her eyes gazed from his eyes to his body and then it stopped on his fingers briefly before landing on his face again. "Is UK off limits for me? Why are you surprised to see me here?" Mira asked, a playful grin on her lips. "Hello Miss Mira." Ethan found the perfect time to intercept and say something. Mira turned towards Ethan, who she had noticed but choose to ignore. "Hi Ethan." Mira responded, the least but excited to speak to him.Just like Richard, Ethan had been responsible for she not getting Gordon's contact on time. Blocking her from meeting him at every country they were both in at the same time. He also did things like, avoiding her, refusing to give her inside information about Gordon and all that. "I am busy. I'll have to take my leave now Mira." Gordon muttered

My assistant checks them and tells me about the important and productive ones. When it's futile, he doesn't tell me about it." Gordon muttered, allocating all the blames to Ethan. In fact, Ethan had informed him of Richard's countless business proposals and he had gone through all of them but at the end of the day he found them to be unprofitable for him.Richard grit his teeth. That Ethan is proving to be a thorn in his flesh, if he kept this act up, he would soon beat him up or get him killed. "Well then. We are on the lucky side, I have sent the email directly to your personal messages. If you could go through them and give me your response, that would be good." Richard said. "Mum supported me but Dad never supported me choices. He promised to never let me achieve my goals and I promised him that I would achieve them." Claire explained, nostalgia in her gaze. If there was someone she was grateful for it was her mum but eventually, her mum slowly started to become like her dad. She started complaining about everything and their relationship had fallen off too. Gordon stared at Claire without saying a word. He didn't know how to console a person. He had tried in the past but it proved futile and so he had given up. He could understand how Claire felt because sometimes in his life, he had been in her shoes as well. Claire sniffed and wiped her face with her hands before looking at Gordon with a smile. "I have gotten over it. I'm so sorry for making you watch me cry. I got over it a long time ago.""I strive to be better and work harder everyday." Claire added, cheering herself up. The atmosphere being filled with silence was something due didn't enjoy. G

"Earlier today, you mentioned you were working? What were you working on for hours?" Gordon asked, starting a conversation. At the same time, he was also curious about what work Claire could possibly had worked on all day that had kept her busy. He was aware of the fact that she ran a fashion line which had been barely established before but it had totally crumbled when she was in debt. Excitement gleamed in Claire's eyes at his question. Except Noami, no one had an interest in what she did, go she began talking excitedly forgetting about her worries and thoughts."I was busy designing a dress. Making a sketch that it. " "Remember I had worked in the fashion line previously but my business had previously declined." She muttered, her voice strained.Gordon nodded, there was nothing he didn't know about her. She had been alone most of her life. Getting the title of a sister, made her very emotional and happy. "Thank you." Claire muttered. "Would you like anything? I'll send the maid to get them before I go back to work." Claire added, trying to be a good host. When Ryan shook his head, she nodded and turned towards Gordon who equally shook his head. He was emitting a certain coldness but Claire brushed it off. "Alright then. Bye." She waved at Ryan and he added upstairs. Claire spent the morning and noon making designs, drawing patterns. Claire said helplessly, she had promised herself that the affairs between her dad and husband would be none of her business.
