I looked at my mate with some guilt.

I didn't know who she was or where she came from, much less her history, but I did know that, perhaps, if I had gone following the Council's recommendation that I go back to actively seek my fated mate in other territories, I would have found her sooner, and whatever happened to her wouldn't have happened.

My head was a seething mass of questions about it.

"What are you thinking so hard about?" asked Angel before sitting down next to me.

"That maybe if there were—"

"The 'would have's' have no place in people's destinies," he replied earnestly, and then patted me on the back to comfort me. "What is meant to be will be; there are no more versions of that. The Goddess maps out our destiny, so don't question that momentous fact; just think about what you need to do to give the best version of you to your mate; she's going to need it when she wakes up; we don't know what she wants to do."

I nodded because he was right.

"I just hope she wakes up
