It was seven in the evening already and every family member of the Johnson's had found their way back to the dark home.
"Thanks for that awesome meal, that's the best thing I've had in years!" Joe had just hungrily emptied a plate of hot spaghetti and a couple of meatballs. "I'm glad you love my cooking" Viola blushed. The kids began to giggle, "Aunt V likes Joe o, Aunt V likes Joe o" they teased them and fled the room still giggling. "Don't pay attention to them, they're kids" A shy Viola put in. "Uh huh, yeah I guess so", Joe nodded. "So! Why don't I show you to your room?" Viola snapped, trying to ease the atmosphere. "Yeah, okay!" The Johnsons had spent a whole lot of money and time building the mighty house. Their's were the largest on the street, it was always dark on the inside, just like the other houses on the cobbled street. The houses on Mermaid street were closely lined up, the shades from each house shadowed the windows. But there was something different about the 1st Johnson house, to the neighbours it was a mystery. The curious neighbours who had nothing else to spend time on would peep into the house from the outside, just to know what went on in there, but they could see nothing but the drapes behind the windows. It did not make sense to them why the house was so dark; darker than the others, they also wondered why they could never pay a visit to the family. People were never allowed into the house even when Old Mr Johnson was alive. William .A. Johnson family were not the only ones with that name on the street, but they were the first on the street. They were also a constant topic on the gossip forum. Some, were scared of the persons who lived in the strange house, while others were scared of the house. No one dared to play tricks on the house, or to even imagine it, some claimed that they heard strange sounds every night. The only persons allowed in the house were closest of friends. The Johnsons made no trouble and they got no trouble. They were respectfully feared. They made good friends, but those friends were never let in on the family's secrets. If there was one thing the Johnsons were really good at, it was lying. Curious questions from neighbours, friends and the police were always well answered to the point that such questions were never asked again, there was always some kind of trustworthy proof. If someone asked for the reason of the dark house, they'd say it's because of the large drapes, or maybe someone pressed on with questions like, why don't you put on the lights? They'd reply that they're old schooled, and they preferred candles. William had to deal with business out of town, Amelia was a wonderful lawyer. Olivia's restaurant flourished and blossomed like spring time, they were all living the dream! Dr Joe found the house tour a little strange but also exciting and instructive. "This is one large house! Who designed this?!" "Well, I really don't know but this mansion has been in the family for a long time. They wanted something complex and challenging!" "Yeah, but why all the secrets? I mean, you showed me a few rooms I wasn't allowed to go in". "There are always reasons for secrets. The reason for the secret is the key to the door of the secret", Viola replied him with her back leaning against the wall. Joe shrugged and nodded. "I love the design, it's so-- old-fashioned". "Sure! Dr Joe, I'll show you to your room now. You must be tired, shall we?" "After you, Milady!" He gestured. They both walked along a long slightly dark passage, there were scented candles on the wall which led them to a swimming pool. They walked around the pool to one of the doors facing the opposite side where they came from. "This is amazing!" Joe exclaimed. Caro giggled. "You've never seen a house like this before, eh?" "Only in the movies; the whole house is in bricks! No paint, no tiles, no electricity. It's absolutely different from everything I've known!" "Oh, we do have electricity Dr Joe, we use it for the fridges, TV's, phones and other important things, but not as a source of light". "Yeah to hide out the secrets!" Joe winked and smirked. "Oh Mr Joe, you are a funny man!" "I'm glad I could impress you". "Impress me?" She paused and glanced at Joe. "Oh no you haven't, not one bit!" "Really? So what does it take to impress a pretty woman like you?"Viola only walked past him, brought out a bunch of old-fashioned keys and unlocked a silver door. Joe was amazed at the splendid sight of his new room. There was a wide-spread lengthy glass window that greeted them first. A large red sofa, opposed the window, there was a simple designed fireplace lit with golden flames, it winked and hissed at the large King's bed that sat comfortably face-to-face the beautiful fireplace. A large TV was well stuck into the wall high above the border of the fire. The room had a welcoming scent, and a homey rich man's feeling. He couldn't resist it, for the first time, Joe imagined life as satisfying, like he wanted nothing more! "Whoa! I really have to meet your brother, he's special!" He swiftly turned facing Viola. "Thanks a lot, you've been a big help to me, Viola!" "You're our guest after all, Dr Joe!" "Please call me Joe". "Alright, but don't get all comfy just yet, I'm sure you won't last a week in this house!" "And why's that?!" "Oh, I don't know, it's just a thought. But if you can make it through the first week, you might just be on the road to impressing me". "Yeah I see", he paused "It's a challenge then!" He exclaimed. "Please have some lone time, freshen up and be downstairs by 9pm, the others would all like to meet you". "Alright save a spot for me, will ya?!"Viola laughed and replied, "Sure!" Dr Joe was left alone in that large room. He decided to unpack and fill the wardrobe with his belongings. He took his bath, wore a nice outfit, sprayed on something appealing, then threw himself on the bed. "This is really nice", he sighed. He put on the TV, scrambled through the channels for some time, and slept off. His mind wandered off into a special dream. He was soon awakened by the telephone which laid on a little table close to the bed. "Hello?" "Dr Joe, have dinner with us". "Yeah-- yes, uh-- I'll be right down". The phone hung up. He hurriedly put on his loafers, ran along the scented passage, down a few stairs, through the large living room, through another little passage and landed in the dining room. This time, to his surprise, forty eyes stared at him. William was the header at the dining table, everyone else sat opposite each other on both sides of the table. William preferred greatly, not to have visitors nor guests in his home, but somehow, he allowed this guy! He was hardworking, a bit sad, mighty and full bearded. "Dr Joe, you're welcome, please sit down", he gestured. "Uh-- meet the Johnsons!" Will announced. "Thank you sir. I greatly admire your house!". "Hmm, what is it you like about it?" William calmly asked, with his fingers locked in between both hands and his elbows firmly stood on the hard, ebony table. "Um, it's so old-fashioned, it's different, with complex designs and beauty. The house is rich!" Joe answered. William laughed loudly and returned to his meal. "Thank you everyone, for accepting me as your guest. I look forward to getting to know you all, as you'll get to know me as well".They all stared at him for a few seconds and returned to the food. One of the maids served him a plate of grilled meat and a glass of warm milk. Every now and then, William stared at the man seated at the other end of the dining table; the silence grew louder. Spoons, knives and forks clashed with the glass plates. The kids whispered amongst themselves. Someone had to end the silence. "Dr Joe, what do you do exactly? Oh! By the way, I'm Amelia" "Nice to meet you Amelia. I'm an optician--" "An eye doctor!" One of the kids excitedly, but rudely put in. "Yes! That's what I am!" "So you're not a real doctor!" William said sarcastically. He just had to show his disgust in the young man in one way or the other. He was sure to give him a hard time. "Well I'm not a fake Doctor either. Every section of the medical science, each have a vital role to play-- we all save lives!" "That's true Dr Joe", Olivia smiled at the Doctor. "Do you have a wife?" Grandma (Mrs Johnson) asked. "No I don't!" Joe chuckled. "How 'bout a girlfriend? Some lovely lady waiting for you back home?" It was the turn of Grandpa to interfere. "None at all. These are very funny questions!" Joe took a quick glance at Viola and she too was stealing a look at the Doctor, she knew she was caught, quickly, she lowered her eyes. "Are you leaving anytime soon, Doctor?" Karen meekly asked. "Not for now, dear Karen, not for now", he shook his head. "Someone put me to a challenge and I'm sure gonna try my best to win it!" Joe continued. "Are you on a mission?!" Asked Biggy. "Are you getting a reward?!" Chubby added. Joe burst out laughing, William couldn't help but hide a chuckle, everyone else joined in the laughter. "Well Chubby, I do hope I get a reward, I'd really like to impress the challenger!" Joe could see Viola silently laughing. "And what if you fail the challenge, Mr Joe?" She finally said. "Then I'll keep trying". "What if you never win?" "I guess I'll have to steal my reward! Isn't that right boys?!" The kids giggled. "Don't think it'd be that easy, young man!" "Oh sure! I know that, Viola, I know that", Joe shook his head slowly, and stabbed his dessert one last time. He was pleasantly satisfied! Everyone had their fill and went off to bed after exchanging a few good nights. Just then, Viola whispered, "Hey Joe, I have something for you!" "What's that!" He whispered back. "To find the key, you must first unlock the door, find two keys then you can begin your journey! Goodnight!" "Hey! What do you mean?!"Viola left him with a few words to solve the coming mystery that was soon to befall the Doctor. He blinked a little too frequently, trying to comprehend and process what he just heard. He gave up, then shrugged. Because he was tired, he took a stroll to his room, climbed up the bed and fell asleep!"Shh! We can't afford to wake him up!" "Everybody, focus!" "Do we really have to do this?!" "Yeah, we have to know the person we've let into our home!" "Keep your voices down guys. I gave him one of the hints in the book". "Alright, that's rule number what?" "Monica, bring out the rule book". "Oh here it is, rule number four, 'To find the key, you must first unlock the door, find two keys and begin your journey'". "Oh no you guys, go easy on him, he seems like a nice guy!". "That's not important for now, let's get on with it, shall we?" "Ok so, what's quest number 4?" "Sleep walking!" Uncle Millie rubbed his palms against each other with excitement and brought out a large candle. William sprayed some paprica on the lit candle and everyone present, smiled mischievously. "Seven candles, for seven nights!" "Hahaha, let the show begin!" A party of seven tiptoed on to the guest section. The unknown candle was placed on the ground in front of Joe's room. It's scent and smoke w
"That was so fun!" "Did you see that? I slipped on ice!" "This is so unfair, I should've won!" "Well you were too slow, boo-hoo!" "In your face! Chubby". He stuck his tongue out. "Oh my God! Kids kids! Calm down. Go to your room, shower and go to bed!" Amelia ordered. They all had returned from the park. Some played on ice, some played football, others enjoyed bowling; even though the ball was too heavy for them. The old folks were asleep somewhere in the house. William wasn't coming home today, Viola and her sisters-in-law, just had some quality time with the kids. "Aww, mum! No dinner?" "Not when you guys are so noisy". Amelia answered. "Remember you kids are black, not barbarians!", Olivia added. "Wow! Something smells nice". They began to sniff in the aroma. Everyone ran up to the kitchen to find the chef. "Hey guys! Welcome, welcome. Have your seats, cause dinner's ready!" "Yaaaay!" The kids happily reacted. "You can cook?" Caro wondered. "You are an interesting man
Joe, by now had become used to the way the Johnson's door freely flung open, all he had to do was walk into the house; after all, he was a freeman in the house now, so he thought. Now and then he recalled his first day in the Mansion, all he could was chuckle at the memory. He swung himself on to the bed and decided to watch some TV. An hour later, a soft knock came at the door, Joe quickly went to the door and brought it to his command, he found two little kids staring at him with large innocent eyes and a large cup of smoothie with one of them. "Hey Karen, hey George! What you guys doing here?" "We brought this for you!". "Thanks! It's been all while since I had a smoothie. Uh– would you like to come in?" The kids entered the room excitedly and sat on the large sofa. "When did you guys return?" "Few minutes ago!", Christian answered. "So, how was school?" "Good!" They chorused. "Okay– ", Joe looked up at the ceiling and then back at the kids, not knowing what else to say. "I
Joe laid on his kingly bed, spending the time away chatting. He scrolled through the messages on his phone— the chats he hadn't had time to reply to, were all lined up. Soon, he fell asleep; sleep was something every person had to obey, and the young man was exhausted. The large clock in the hall struck 11pm and all the while it had sounded so loud, old and dusty, it never seemed to disturb anyone whenever it spoke out with its loud voice. Joe had slept soundly these past nights despite the old clock's chime. Strangely, this time around, the doctor's eyes sprung open at the sound of the round clock. His eyes blinked flutteringly, His heart raced— he could hear it beating almost as if it would burst out from his chest; but it didn't! His eyes hung open, heavily. His dark skin tingled and ached. Instantly, he felt cold and his teeth clattered. He felt stiff, but somehow managed to come to his senses. He gasped in shock, realizing where he was. Quickly, he stood up from the bed and st
Another howl alarmed him, this time it sounded close. He turned his head and eyes in every direction, he broke a sweat, his heart froze. His head and eyes ached; for he knew the howling was for him. He continued his trek— slowly yet boldly, he was back in the middle of the tall frozen trees and the air felt more chilly. Two golden bright eyes came lurking in the misty shadows, two became four and four became ten eyes! The winter wolves had decided to come face to face with the stranger in their territory and Joe was frightened as hell. The white canines were beautiful creatures, but the doctor knew he wasn't to be fooled by their charm. One by one they came out of the misty shadows– snarling, gnarling, glaring at him, walking majestically in a formation towards the doctor. Joe stood still only for seconds, then he began moving backwards away from the wolves, but how he managed to move his legs he just didn't know; for he was fear stricken. The wolves barked at h
Joe! Joe! Doctor Joe!He could hear something like a faint voice calling out a word, his eyes opened up but his sight still blurry. Gradually he began to see her face— the beautiful lady with strange eyes who made his heart skip a beat. A silent smile appeared on his cheeks. "I got to see you one last time" he whispered. "Joe! Joe Wake up, I'm here, come back to us!" This time he could hear Viola's voice clearly. She tried to shake him out of it. With a fright, Joe raised up half of his body from the bed, Viola grabbed hold of him and held him close. "It's alright, 'Twas a dream", she whispered into his ears trying to calm him. In a swift motion, he left her arms; turning his head to the floor and let out several loud coughs. Finally he felt free, he began to understand where he was. He saw the lady beside him and some persons were standing over him. "I- I was dead!" the words came out breathlessly, his clothes were soaked in his own sweat. "No you only thought you were. You were
Joe came down to join The Johnson's for breakfast the next morning. He had managed to use the remaining hours of the night for an interrupted sleep. He felt a sense of peace when he awoke that morning. He freshened up, packed his bags and ended up in some nice clothes and high class shoes. He was ready for the day ahead! "Good morning to you all!" "Good morning Dr Joe!" Everyone greeted back. "Care to join us for breakfast?" Amelia invited him. "Would be delighted to!" Joe dragged out a wooden chair without arms from underneath the shiny wooden table, and sat comfortably on it. "Hmm, this is an amazing breakfast! The food looks and smells inviting!" Joe rubbed his palms in excitement and anticipation. Viola smiled meekly. "Indeed Joe, indeed!" Uncle Millie agreed. Everyone ate to their fill, clashing the forks, knives and spoons together with the glass plates— which created a lovely dining table music; a simple song that anyone would hear and know that they were eating. They ha
LONDONRYE, EAST SUSSEX TOWNMERMAID STREET.2005 to 2006************ It had been two months since Joe left the mansion. He had been well accommodated by the 2nd Johnson family. He fulfilled his duties as a doctor, the patients liked him. The news of a new Doctor had spread throughout the town. The workload became more hectic for the Doctor. Joe attended to patients and at the same time had training sessions with resident doctors in training. By the end the day Joe returned home as a tired man. "Hey I'm back!" Joe announced, he waited for a reply but no one answered; he was alone. "Yes! Finally, I'm gonna have a peaceful siesta!" He happily hummed as he climbed the stairs up to his room. Immediately he locked the door behind him, he sank into his bed and fell into a deep sleep with a tired grin. The Johnsons would not be home till seven, the Doctor had enough time to sleep away his stress. Though they were not as noisy as the other Johnsons but they always wanted to talk with Joe
Joe and Viola had spent three long but fun filled days away from home. Joe had completely forgotten all abt the dark house on Rye Street, he hadn't given any thought at all to whatever he had experienced in that house. He was most pleased to be in the company of Viola; the love of his life.Joe had arrived in London with only the aim of doing his best at his job as an ophthalmologist at the hospital he was assigned to, he never dreamed nor imagined he would come to find love here, but here he was loving a gorgeous woman with the strange eyes! While on the other hand, Viola thought abt her family constantly, it was a feeling she couldn't put down even if she tried. V's mum Mrs Johnson had already called her a thousand times to check up on her, there was always a certain level of warmth and care in the old lady's voice... Olivia and Amelia had called her too a few times, they always chatted happily and giggled all through their conversations, they even demanded to know every detail abou
The Johnsons fell asleep in the living room, fear had made them unable to sleep in their rooms. Each one found a place in the room to sleep on. For sure it wouldn't be anything like the comfort and softness of their beds, but it was sure better than being alone in their rooms with thoughts of a ghost in the house. They woke up the next morning with pains all over their body. The kids were already up playing around in the large hall. The air felt different today, there was a good sense of feeling all around the house. It seemed like the fear was gone. The ones who woke up first, woke the others with a tap.Awwwww! They yawned with mouths wide open and bad breaths. "I'm soooo hungry!" Viola complained first. "Me too!" "Olivia, Viola, we have got to fix us some breakfast. We can't let this— ghost thing keep us from eating, let's go!" Amelia scolded the other women. "I guess you're right!” "Come on!"The three women stood and began to walk to the large hall; the others in the roo
They had arrived at the restaurant at exactly 6pm. It was a lovely sight to behold just from the outside. The blue painted restaurant blended beautifully into the dusk of the evening, Viola peeked into the building through the glass windows of the restaurant. Petit Pois was boldly written above the building with white coloured letters. Joe took her hand and guided her to the entrance of the restaurant with a broad smile, he opened the door for the lady and she went in first through the narrow door and Joe followed after. "Wow I love this place already!" she whispered into Joe's ear.Joe chuckled and they continued to stroll along the restaurant; observing the place.Joe instantly took note of the wooden floors; he seemed satisfied with the view as he nodded with every step. They finally found a cozy spot to sit at the far end corner of the large restaurant. "This is so cool Joe!" "Yeah it is!" "How did you find this place?... I guess it's one of those places you bring your other
It was time for school holidays, another term had come to an end. The kids finally get a break from school for the next few weeks. During this time they'd get the chance to stay at home till their hearts content and play all day long. But it was also a time when parents would have a lot more on their hands. Olivia took the kids to her mum's house to spend the holiday with her mum. It was the first time the children would leave*******It was a Sunday evening that day and the Johnsons have a tradition of having a special meal every Sunday— roast turkey, meatballs, spicy soups, drinks, slow classical music, elegance and a whole lot more for the evening. It was a day William enjoyed greatly.Today was also the day Joe decided to take Viola out on a romantic date. Viola thought to herself that she has never been happier in her life; Joe was definitely the man of her dreams— he always wanted to make her happy and she was absolutely pleased with her life now as it seemed like a fairytale; A
It had been a week since the Crimson Moon appeared in the sky. A week ago Grandpa died and the mansion had trapped the Johnsons indoors, the dark secret of the Johnson family had been exposed— Late Mrs Alberta's ghost wanted revenge on her husband whom she thought had killed her years ago, every fifty years since her death, she would come to haunt the mansion she was trapped in. This is why the house was never open to visitors; the secret had to be kept a secret from all who would come to acquire knowledge of the old house. They had to keep the Johnson legacy unblemished and every family member had been able to do so for many decades— although most of them had only believed the story of Alberta's ghost to be just a myth, some even laughed at the word ghost. Only the few persons who had seen Alberta's ghost in the dark house believed and some of them lost their sanity in the process. The ones who survived the attacks never wanted anything to do with the house.********It was July in

They were all seated in the living room that morning, they could see from the windows that the weather was dull and wet but there was a little ray of sunshine in the clouds. The night before was hell for the family, they had experienced something they'd never even dreamt about. They had lost a family member; and though he was old, he didn't die a peaceful death and this pained Amelia greatly, she had always wanted that for her Father. Well at least he got to live a peaceful life, and he saw his grandkids which he had come to love very much. William was so worried about how he would get his family out of this nightmare, at this time he wished he was hallucinating; unfortunately, he wasn't! This was as real as it could be and everyone knew it! "I can recall your father telling me about his past a few times, he had lovely memories that he was greatly fond of and whenever he told the stories, he always had a smile on his face. But there was just one story he would tell with all seriousn
Joe ran along a dark alley in the late hours of the night, he panted for breath and his whole body shook with fear, "Please don't hurt me! Please!!!" Joe woke up from a nightmare with a scream. His eyes opened up at once and his heart was beating a million times faster, he swallowed dryly. He looked around to confirm his surroundings, he realized he had been dreaming when he found himself lying on the hard brown floor and the scene was nothing like the one in his nightmare. The nightmare began to appear like flashes in his memory, he could remember being pursed by a strange creature that almost resembled a man, and the strange figure wanted to kill him! Joe shook his head and blinked his eyes over and over again to make him forget the nightmare, then he realized a difference in the passage. Alas! "Wake up everyone! Wake up!" Joe began to shake them slightly to wake them up. "Hey the doors are back, look!" He stood up at once and ran to the kids door. He waited and looked behind
"William, let's take her up to the room and lay her on the bed!" Amelia said with a panicky voice. "Yeah!" William responded with a sniff. He raised Olivia from the smooth floor and carried her in his arms. "She's still out cold!" Monica whispered. "Come on, come on kids! Let's get you upstairs to your rooms!" Grandpa guided the kids up the stairs. They followed behind William and Grandpa walked behind the kids. "There must be some way out of this!" Joe exclaimed with concern in his voice. "Hey! We'll get through this ok? All of us!" Viola encouraged her family and hugged Joe. "Why don't we go join them upstairs?" Uncle Millie suggested. "Yeah let's go!" They agreed. One by one, two by two they climbed up the stairs and soon the large hall was empty. They continued their journey through a long passage with dim lights, the passage led to each of their rooms— each room had a red door and Olivia's room was at the end of the passage. There were candelabras on both sides of the wal
