-Cain-We didn’t want food. We wanted to forget the truth that had been so roughly thrown in our faces. But Willow was good at convincing us to get a grip and eat something to soak up the alcohol in our stomachs. We ate slowly, still trying to come to terms with the fact that Weston was our father.Yet while I wanted to be angry with our mother, I also understood her actions—perhaps better than Carter did. Just looking at Willow, I knew I couldn’t give her up.“What?” Willow asked, catching me staring at her again.“What?” I echoed.“You keep looking at me funny. Are you okay?” she inquired.“I’m okay.”“Then why do you look at me like that?”I shrugged, unable to explain my fears. I was terrified she might disappear into thin air or, Goddess forbid, tell me that the child wasn’t mine. I knew that wasn’t likely—I knew when our pup was conceived—but still, it felt as if we were somehow repeating our parents’ cycle.“Cain! Focus on your food,” she urged, but I had no appetite. I wanted W
-Willow-I glanced between Carter and Cain at breakfast. Neither of them had touched much of their food, but at least they hadn’t started the day with a shot. They chose coffee this time, yet they sipped it slowly, mostly staring into the depths of their mugs. I looked at Henry, who shrugged, clearly unsure how to help, but then he focused on Carter.“Should I call my brother?” he suggested.“I don’t think I want more people involved,” Carter groaned, leaning forward and rubbing his eyes.“I don’t think we can avoid having people involved. If Weston is going to be temporary king, then the truth will definitely come out,” Cain said.“Oh Goddess. The world is going to know we are bastard children,” he sighed.“Bastard,” Cain corrected.“What?”“Not bastard children. We are the children of a bastard,” he said, and the two of them began chuckling over the ridiculous little joke.I rolled my eyes, then turned to Cain and shoved his food closer to him. “You need to eat,” I told him.He reach
-Cain-“How is that properly dressed for the meeting with the council?” My mate entered our closet, looking as gorgeous as ever in her little black-and-white suit and black high heels. Goddess, anything she did made me crave her instantly. She walked over to me, as if she might start undressing me herself to get me into proper clothes for the meeting. However, I grabbed her hands and held them in mine before kissing her.“You look so sexy,” I whispered huskily before leaning closer to her and kissing her again.“Cain, you look like a hitman in all those black clothes. Are you armed too?”“Of course I am,” I said, as if that weren’t a problem.“Cain! You’re not going there to kill someone. You’re having a calm discussion with the council regarding your fa… I mean, Weston,” she corrected herself.I groaned, leaning my head back. “Are you already starting to consider him my father?”“Of course not. It was just a slip-up.”“Clearly. And if my mate is already seeing him as my father, how lo
-Willow-Carter and Cain were growing closer by the day. I had always known the brothers shared a strong bond, but my connection to both had created a rift between them. However, as time passed, it seemed that rift was healing. I watched as they went on morning and evening runs together, returning with laughter and playful shoves. Their conversations became more animated, a sign they were slowly emerging from their grief. As I gazed out the window early one morning and saw them coming back, I couldn’t help but smile. They had only two weeks left before the demanded space was lifted, and I knew they couldn’t avoid seeing Weston at the party tonight. But for now, I cherished these moments of camaraderie between them.I waited by the window until Cain returned to our room, sweaty and in high spirits. When he stepped inside, he froze, his eyes slowly trailing down my body, taking in the sheer robe I wore, which I hadn’t tied. The fabric hung open at the front, exposing my slight bump, the
-Cain-My mate looked absolutely stunning in the dark purple dress she had chosen for the gala. I took a moment to simply gaze at her. The fabric hugged her body tightly, accentuating her beautiful, growing stomach. She looked incredible, and my desire for her only intensified, but I knew we didn’t have time to indulge in distractions. We had a gala to attend.“Ready?” I asked. She turned to me, smiling, as I held up a mask for her. She walked over to take it from me, and I held up my own.“You made us match,” she observed.“I did,” I confirmed.I extended my arm to her, and she linked her arm with mine as we left the bedroom and headed downstairs, where Carter and Henry were waiting.“Took you two long enough. Did you fuck before we needed to go?” Carter teased, making me chuckle and shake my head.“Carter!” Willow exclaimed, prompting laughter from all of us as we stepped outside and into a waiting car.“Nick will meet us there,” Carter mentioned, referring to Henry’s older brother.
-Willow-I was confused as to why Cain had left me on the dance floor, so I quickly made my way to a secluded corner where Nick and Henry found me, positioning themselves on either side as if to protect me. The sight made me smile, and I shook my head slightly.“Let me guess: while I didn’t hear Carter and Cain tell you not to take your eyes off me, they did, didn’t they?” I teased.“Something like that,” Nick admitted, a small smile crossing his face. I returned the gesture, but our moment was soon interrupted as the king took his place on a small stage further away, capturing everyone’s attention.I wasn’t surprised that speeches were being made tonight, but it was still early, and I was intrigued to hear what the king had to say.“Is it a welcome speech?” I mused aloud, glancing at the two betas, who shrugged in response.“Everyone,” the king called, and the room quieted down as all eyes turned toward him. He offered a charming smile, and in that moment, I noticed how much he resemb
-Cain-I was surprised by how little I disliked talking to Weston. After the initial anger faded, we settled into a calmer conversation. I tried to keep my responses measured. He might have helped quell the rumors, but I wasn’t about to let him close in that quickly. However, after about twenty minutes, I decided to wrap up our discussion and find my mate. To my annoyance, Weston didn’t even complain. Instead, he expressed a desire to speak with her as well, but if he thought I was going to let him get that close to my mate so soon, he was mistaken.“Not going to happen,” I said.“Hopefully your feelings will change.”“Don’t count on it,” I replied firmly.“She does carry my grandchild, Cain. I want to get to know her and the child,” he insisted, and I stepped closer.“I allowed you to call it your grandchild on stage because I knew the effect it would have, but don’t overstep,” I warned him.Weston still didn’t seem offended. If anything, he appeared unfazed. He shrugged and nodded. “
-Willow-Once we returned to the party, we mingled again, and his happy demeanor seemed to draw people in rather than keep them at a distance. However, he wasn’t overly interested in chatting with anyone else. He kept touching me and kissing me, making sure I felt warm and loved. On our way home, we settled in the backseat with me on his lap, and he kept whispering filthy things in my ear.“Cain!” I giggled as he slipped his hand into my dress, right at the split between my breasts.I pushed his hand away, giving him a mock scolding look, but it was clear he couldn’t help himself. He continued to tease me with promises of what he would do to me once we got home.“You two are making me sick,” Carter called from the front seat.“Sorry!” I called back.“Don’t apologize to him. We’re the ones who’ll be vomiting when he finds his mate,” Cain teased before lavishing my neck with kisses, making my skin feel like it was on fire.I knew we were being a bit over the top, but I couldn’t help it.

-Carter-My heart froze as we locked eyes. Hers were a deep green, and I loved them from the moment I saw them. She offered me a nervous smile, clearly trying to ignore the messages our wolves were sending us, before she hurried off with the glasses on her tray. An undeniable urge to follow her coursed through me.“Carter!” my brother called, pulling me from my thoughts. I turned to him.“Huh?”“Come on, it’s our turn,” Cain told me.“Um, yeah, just say hello from me,” I replied, taking off in the opposite direction. I heard him call after me, but I couldn’t stop now.Every nerve in my body was vibrating, urging me to find my mate. I had seen the way she left the ballroom, and as I entered the hallway, it was much easier to follow her scent out here. I found her in the kitchen, gathering more glasses for the party amidst the sounds of the bustling staff. I made sure not to enter immediately, instead retreating a little to find a room where I could intercept her. I waited until she pass
-Cain-I watched as Weston held one of my daughters overhead, pulling a funny face that made her giggle. The sight filled my heart with warmth, yet I couldn’t shake the worry that gnawed at me as I glanced over at my mother, who was holding my other daughter—something I had reluctantly allowed. My daughters were only a year old, but Carter had lived in this house for quite some time with his own mate, who had just given birth to a son, and it seemed to be going well. Surprisingly, everything was functioning smoothly, but I had made it clear to Willow that I would never allow my mother to be alone with my children. Still, it was hard to resist my mate’s pleas to give my mother a chance.I couldn’t forgive her, but I noticed the change in her demeanor when she was with my daughter. She seemed genuinely different—happier.“Hey,” Willow said, coming up behind me and wrapping her arms around me.I turned slightly so I could wrap my arm around her in return, resting my hand over her flat sto
-Willow-It was surprising how quickly everything unfolded. Soon, the queen was confined to the palace, limited to her room and the lower floor of that section. She had her meals brought to her, but this arrangement allowed her to spend time with Weston, and I could see how grateful he was for that. He even hugged Carter tightly when he came to witness the transfer, but Cain didn’t even appear.I knew Weston and his mate understood, but I could sense their longing for Cain to be more accepting of the situation. For now, this was how things would be, and as Carter and I walked together through the palace, we both had homes to return to.“So, do I ever get to be properly introduced to your mate?” I teased.“I’ve actually convinced her to move here with me. She’s just nervous because we come from two different worlds,” he explained.“I can understand that. Maybe we should all have dinner together.”“I’m not sure we can lure Cain here. He’s… determined,” Carter groaned.I sighed. “You’re p
-Willow-The news spread quickly, shocking me as much as everyone else. No one had expected the queen to go so far, yet as the days dragged on, the council remained divided on how to punish her. I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy. The queen deserved punishment, but I realized she wouldn’t have acted as she did if she hadn’t been forced to smile and nod through the pain inflicted on her by others. Weston had made a good point: I could have been the queen. I could have become just as desperate…“It’s really unbelievable she did it,” Eva said, breaking me free from my thoughts. She sat across from me in a small café we had agreed to meet at so I could escape the confines of home.“Yeah…”“Why do you sound that way?” she asked, her brow furrowing with concern.“I just… feel like this has become a bigger mess than it should be,” I admitted.“What do you mean? She killed the king and poisoned you! I thought you’d be the first one shouting for her head,” Eva joked.I managed a smal
-Cain-I was utterly confused about why Weston had asked to be alone with us. He even requested that we stand up, and we formed a small circle beside the table. Carter and I exchanged puzzled glances, but I sensed something unsettling from Willow. Even our mother seemed unsure about what was happening. Only Weston appeared unfazed by the situation.“Why did you send them all out?” Carter inquired, voicing the question lingering on my tongue.“Because I wanted to do this in private before…” Weston glanced at Willow, and I followed his gaze. When she felt my eyes on her, she turned to give me an apologetic look.“Weston,” my mother called, her voice tinged with fear.“Okay, what is going on?” I pressed.“You have to admit it,” he insisted, focusing on my mother.“Admit what? What, Mom?” I urged, and both Carter and I focused on her, but she looked away, refusing to meet our eyes.“What the hell is going on?” Carter demanded, turning to Weston.“It was your mother who poisoned Willow,” We
-Cain-“Goddess, look at your faces!” Willow exclaimed. “You’re starting to do some serious damage!”As Carter and I sat down to eat, Willow approached to inspect me, tilting my head to the side to examine the cuts and swelling. I grabbed her hands, kissed them, and pulled her down onto my lap.“We’re fine,” I assured her.“We will heal,” Carter added.“Why are you hitting each other so hard?”“It’s called practice. We’re keeping our skills sharp,” I explained.“But Carter can’t even open his right eye, and the cut on your lip is so swollen that I’m afraid you won’t be able to eat!” she scolded.“Eat the food or your—” I started, but she cut me off by placing a hand over my mouth.“Not funny.”I pulled her hand down. “I think it was rather funny.”“What will the council think when they see you like this?” she murmured.“What do you mean?”She glanced between Carter and me, both of us clearly feeling puzzled.“You didn’t notice the meeting the council has called? Have you two been that
-Cain-“I don’t see the point in this,” my brother said as we stepped into the small gym in our house. I positioned myself on the blue mat, bouncing slightly to get ready, while Carter stood at a distance, wearing sunglasses indoors and a big hoodie over the training clothes I had insisted he change into. He didn’t just look hungover. He looked like a poster boy for the dangers of drinking. He was a complete mess.“You need it,” I told him.“Does it look like I want to work out right now?” he replied.“We’re fighting to keep our skills sharp,” I explained.“Why?”I hesitated, unsure of how to articulate the fear that had been gnawing at me. What Willow had confessed scared the living daylights out of me.“It helps,” I insisted.“It helps to fight with a pounding headache?” he shot back.“Well, that’s on you. You could quit drinking.”He groaned and pulled out a mini flask from his pocket. I sighed and walked over to him, snatching the vodka from his grasp.“Really?” I asked, holding it
