-Willow- I was cleaning out the office when I heard something behind me. Slowly, I turned only to let out a startled scream. Despite expecting someone to be behind me, the last person I had thought would appear stood in the doorway, wrapped in a long robe. The queen had arrived. “Your Majesty,” I said and bowed my head. Her tired eyes scanned the room, looking at every corner, and then landed on my hands, which held the empty wrapping of a candy bar. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Um… cleaning up.” “Why?” “Because your son has been staying in here, and I thought he might want a cleaner room,” I explained before I walked over to where the trashcan was and threw it in. When I turned again, she had come closer to me, a strange energy surrounding her, but I knew that was to be expected from a grieving mate. She had been with the king for many years after all. “Where is he?” she asked. “Cain and I came to check on you two, and right now they are out walking,” I explained.” The
-Cain-The way my mate looked at her former fiancé, the man she had thought she would spend her life with, was like a punch to the gut. I knew that Willow’s heart was what would be hard to conquer, but I thought I was getting there. I thought she was falling for me and that things were getting better between us. After all, we were building a family, but when I revealed that Carter said he loved her, there was something in her eyes. As if there was hope for it to be true. Did she want his words to be true? No, she can’t! She is ours, my wolf growled. She was, but the look I simply couldn’t interpret in any other way. It was if she was begging Carter to repeat it, to tell her the truth about his feelings, and it hurt.“What?” Willow asked, yet she was looking at Carter.I turned slightly, looking at my brother and feeling my anger rise again, but I didn’t move. Carter glanced at me but returned his gaze to Willow.“I was scared,” he admitted. “I was scared of what I felt, so I pulled aw
-Willow- It was nice walking around with Carter. It felt like we were slipping into our old roles, but as we strolled and talked about everything and nothing, I realized something. For a long time, I had yearned to hear Carter say those three words while he looked at me with the same intensity as earlier. When we were together, he could never bring himself to say "I love you," and as a result, I desired those words more than anything. But as we continued our walk, I came to a realization: although it felt good to hear them now, I no longer craved those words as I once did. I cared for Carter because of our long history, but I didn't love him in the romantic sense anymore. "You know, fighting over a girl is such a cliché," I teased, revisiting our earlier topic. Carter chuckled and nodded as we turned a corner. "Yeah, I know." He turned to me, giving me a small smile, and I returned it. "Just promise me you'll never do it again." "He hit me first," Carter informed me. "And what
-Willow- Cain wasn’t home. Carter suggested staying with me, but I told him I would be fine and that it was probably best if Cain didn’t come home to the sight of us together. I asked around to hear if others knew where he was, but no one did. I went into our bedroom and sat by the window, looking outside. I sat there for so long, waiting for him. The sun disappeared, and the moon came out. Only a small light by the bed was turned on in our bedroom, making sure the darkness didn’t completely swallow me. However, I began dozing off a bit before I finally heard something. It sounded like a crash, and I quickly sat up, looking around. I focused on the door before I heard another bang, as if something had hit it. I stood up and walked over to the door, opening it, only to find Cain leaning against it, looking disheveled, and he smelled strongly of alcohol. As I opened the door, he slid down to the floor and looked up at me. “Cain?” He opened his eyes and smiled at me. “Oh, there is my
-Cain-Willow and I continued to lie in bed even though we knew work awaited us, but we didn’t want to move. She lay on my chest, running her fingers over my tattoo, following the lines, while I ran mine down her back and sides, feeling her soft skin. The covers didn’t cover us, but we weren’t cold, so close we were lying to each other.“When did you have this made? I don’t remember ever seeing any photos of you with it, and you were caught with your shirt off many times,” she teased me.I chuckled a little. “Last year.”“So, it’s rather new?”“It is,” I told her.“Why did you have it made?” she asked.“Just wanted a change. Something to make me stand out.”“Stand out?”“There is an exact copy of me out there,” I reminded her.“I see,” she said with a little smile, and continued to run her fingers a little up my neck, then grazed her mark on my shoulder, sending tingling sensations through me before she went down to my chest again.“Why didn’t you tell me yesterday?” I asked her.“Wha
-Cain- I stood in the closet, fixing my tie, and felt like my hands were incredibly sweaty. I wasn’t looking forward to this day, but I knew I couldn’t avoid it. Today we were saying goodbye to my father, whether I wanted to or not. Life was sometimes incredibly unfair, yet I knew his death hadn’t been caused by natural causes, and I was no closer to figuring out who had hurt him or Willow. It would be much easier if the council wasn’t eager to figure out who belonged on the throne. If I could fully focus on those traitors out there, then I would have found them by now. Unfortunately, I was being pulled in other directions, and I had other responsibilities to focus on. “Cain?” Willow appeared in the closet, dressed in a black dress as well. “Hey,” I whispered as I turned around, and she gave me a small smile as she came closer. She placed her hands on my neck and made me focus on her. She always had a way of settling me, making me feel calmer, yet I knew nothing could fully take th
-Willow-I chatted a little with my parents and even talked with Eva a little, but as I went to try to find Cain, I ended up hearing strange whispers behind my back. I turned to look over my shoulder, seeing a group of young wolves glancing my way and chuckling. I quickly turned away and realized what was going on. I hadn’t stepped much out of the house after getting mated to Cain, and therefore I had yet to be met by the harsh reality of what was being said behind my back, but now I felt it, now I heard those whispering voices, the gossip. People still believed I had thrown myself at Cain the first chance I got. It didn’t matter if I spoke of a true bond, because I let the rumors fester and spread, and I was paying for that now. I shook my head, trying not to focus on it, but I wasn’t looking where I was going and ran into a hard body. I almost lost my balance, but hands reached out to steady me, and I looked up, seeing an imposing alpha in front of me. I realized he was the one who
-Cain- I flipped the little invitation in my hand. It was written on black paper with silver letters, and I groaned, hoping I could make the invitation less true just from watching it, but I knew there was no way around it. The council had already planned the next event, a gala, and Willow and I were, of course, attending. I ran back to our bedroom. A servant had brought me the letter as I was on my way out, but I wanted to give my mate a heads-up. I walked into our bedroom, hearing the water run in the bathroom, and smiled. I opened the door and found my mate underneath the warm water, rinsing off, and I took my time watching her. She sensed my presence and turned her head before turning her side toward me. “Cain!” “I have seen everything and tasted, why hide?” I teased her, and I saw her shaking her head. “Maybe don’t watch me in the shower like a creep.” “It’s romantic because I’m your mate,” I countered, seeing her roll her eyes before she continued her shower, but I held up t

Want to learn what happened with Carter and his mate Sara at the party? -Carter- My heart froze as we stared into each other’s eyes. Hers were such a deep green, and I loved them from the moment I saw them. She gave me a nervous smile, clearly trying to ignore the message our wolves were giving us in our heads, and sped off with the glass on her tray. I kept looking after her, feeling an undeniable urge to follow her. “Carter!” my brother called, and I turned my head. “Huh?” I answered. “Come on, it’s us next,” Cain told me. “Um, yeah, just say hello from me,” I replied before taking off, hearing him call after me, but I couldn’t stop now. Every nerve in my body was vibrating, telling me to go find my mate. I had seen the way she had gone, leaving the ballroom, and as I came into the hallway, it was much easier to follow her scent. I found her in the kitchen, getting more glasses for the party, and hearing the servants work. I made sure not to enter and instead crept back a litt
-Cain- I watched Weston hold one of my daughters over his head, making a funny face at her and making her laugh. It brought warmth to my heart watching it all happen, yet it was hard to shake the worry seeing my mother so close to my other daughter, whom I had reluctantly allowed her to hold. My daughters were only over a year old, but Carter had lived in this house for a good while now with his own mate, who had just given birth to a son, and it seemed to be okay. Surprisingly enough, everything was going okay, but I was never allowing my mother to be alone with my children, which I had made very clear to Willow. Yet it was hard to resist her when she told me to give it all a chance—to give my mother one. I couldn’t forgive her, but I saw now the benefits of letting her close because she was different. As I truly looked at her with my daughter, I saw she was different because she was allowed to be happy. Therefore, I knew I had to try, at least because I knew better than anyone wha
-Willow- It was rather surprising how fast everything happened, and soon the queen was confided in the palace, confided to the section where her room was, and confided to the lower floor of that section. She had to have her meals brought, but this gave her a chance to be with Weston, and I saw how grateful he was for that. He even hugged Carter so hard, who was there to see the transfer happen, but Cain refused. Weston understood that, and so did his mate, but I could see how much they wished for Cain to be more accepting of all of this as well. For now, this was how it was going to be, and Carter and I walked together through the palace, both having homes to get back to. “So, do I ever get to be properly introduced to your mate?” I teased. “I have actually convinced her to move here with me. She is just nervous because we come from two different worlds.” “I can understand that. But then maybe we should all have dinner together.” “I am not sure we can lure Cain here. He is… determ
-Willow- The news spread quickly and was as shocking to me as it was to everyone else. No one had expected the queen would go so far, and yet as the days dragged on, no one was sure how to punish the queen. The council and the princes were completely divided, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit bad. Now that I knew there was no longer any threat out there to me or my family and the mystery had been solved, I simply stopped being angry. I knew the queen should still be punished, but she wouldn’t have done what she did if she hadn’t been forced to smile and nod through the pain others had put her through. Weston had made a good point to me, I could have been the queen. I could have become just as desperate… “It’s really unbelievable she did it,” Eva said, breaking me free of my trance. She sat in front of me in a small café we had agreed to meet at so I could get out of the house. Cain and I rarely spoke at the moment, and Carter had gone to be with his mate, living with her, though I
-Cain- I was so confused by why Weston had asked to be alone with us. He even asked us to stand up, and we all met in a small circle beside the table. Carter and I looked at him with a puzzled expression, but I could sense something strange on Willow’s end, yet besides her, only Weston didn’t appear perplexed by all of this. Even our mother seemed unsure about what was going on. “Why did you send them all out?” Carter asked, speaking the question that lingered on my tongue. “Because I wanted to do this in private before…” Weston looked at Willow, and I glanced at her, but when she felt my eyes on her, she turned to give me an apologetic look. “Weston,” my mother called, and I noticed her turning slightly scared. “Okay, what is going on?” I asked, needing some answers now. “You have to admit it,” he insisted, focusing on my mother. “Admit what? Admit what, Mom?” I pressed, and both Carter and I focused on her, but she looked away, not meeting our eyes. “What the hell is going o
-Cain- “Goddess, look at your faces!” Willow exclaimed. “You’re starting to do serious damage!” As Carter and I sat down to eat, Willow came to inspect me, tilting my head to the side and taking in the cuts and the swelling. I grabbed her hands, kissed them, and then pulled her down on my lap. “We are fine,” I assured her. “We will heal,” Carter added. “Why are you hitting each other so hard?” “It’s called practice. We are keeping our skills sharp.” “But Carter can’t even open his right eye, and the cut on your lip is so swollen, I fear you can’t eat!” she scolded. “Eat the food or your—” I didn’t get to finish that sentence as she placed a hand over my mouth. “Not funny.” I pulled her hand down. “I think it was rather funny.” “What won’t the council think when they see you like that?” she murmured. “What do you mean?” She glanced between Carter and me, who looked puzzled at her. “You didn’t notice the meeting the council has called? Have you two been that distracted late
-Cain- “I don’t see the point in this,” my brother said as we stepped into the little gym we had in the house. I placed myself on the blue mat, jumping a little up and down and getting ready, yet Carter was standing at a distance, wearing sunglasses inside and a big hoodie over his training clothes that I had forced him to change into. He didn’t just look hungover, he was perfect for putting on a poster that advised people not to drink. He looked like a fucking mess. “You need it,” I told him. “Does it look like I want to workout right now?” he asked. “We are fighting and keeping our skills sharp,” I explained. “Why?” I didn’t really know what to say. What Willow had confessed to me scared the living shit out of me. Was my brother truly so depressed that he had become suicidal? Willow feared it, and we weren’t able to get Carter to react until the next day, and then we didn’t know what to say. So, I thought, after two days of leaving it alone, we needed to get him going again. Th
